長野県のトップ100温泉を目指して温泉巡りしている中で、先日の駒ヶ根旅の帰りで立ち寄り湯で辰野パークホテル様にお世話になりました。

トップ100と言っても、皆さんはそれぞれの好みがあるから人によって大分違ってきます。私の場合、塩素の匂いと樹脂竹（プラスチックバンブー）なら基本的にアウトです。

辰野パークホテルのお風呂は塩素の匂いがプンプンし、露天風呂の周りにプラスチックバンブーが掛けてある。

なのに、タイラーの「おすすめ」に当たります。

なぜなら、それより良い部分がある：

洗い場や内風呂の設備や内装の綺麗な事、

露天風呂の日本庭園チックなアプローチと東屋の細かいところまで手が届いた事、

そして露天風呂からその眺め♪荒神山池（ため池百選）を見下ろしながら周辺の山々も見えて、本当にホッとする景色。

お湯はナトリウム炭酸水素塩泉だって書いてあるが、特に内風呂では湯質は残念ながら塩素に負けていました。直接露天風呂へ行くのはお勧めです。周りにプラスチックバンブーは他所ありますが、そのやわらかいBGMに、きちんとした造りに、何となく人間にやさしい姫川石の湯槽、その落ち着かせる景色、

とにかく癒されました。

結局、それが長野トップ100温泉の決めるところ：癒されるかどうか。

辰野パークホテルのお風呂は癒されます。

One more stop in my quest for Nagano's Top 100 Onsens: Tatsuno Park Hotel. We stopped for a bath on the way back from our trip to Komagane, and were impressed by the church-like presence of this hilltop hotel.

Two of my pet peeves when it comes to onsens are chlorine smell and plastic bamboo. Unfortunately Tatsuno Park Hotel has both. However, this hotel still gets my recommendation because its good points more than make up for its bad ones. Namely,

The showering area and indoor bath are very elegantly appointed,
The approach to the outdoor bath is a very stylized traditional Japanese garden,
And the outdoor bath made of river rock offers a rejuvinating view of the Kojinyama Pond below and the hills off in the distance.

The attention to detail by the builders really show with the impeccable garden and the stately shelter over the outdoor bath. With soft music playing in the background, the natural contour of the outdoor bath's river rocks, the serene lake and mountain view, we came away completely relaxed.

And at the end of the day, that's what determines whether or not an onsen makes one of Nagano's Top 100, and Tatsuno Park Hotel certainly qualifies!

Komagane's most popular attractions are Kogen-ji Temple and the Komagatake Ropeway / Senjojiki Cirque. But there is much, much more to see and do. One interesting thing to do is to tour the area's factories, including:

*Yomeishu (makers of a traditional Oriental Herbal Liqueur)

*Mars Whisky Their Mars Maltage 3 Plus 25, 28 Years Old won the 2013 World Whiskies Awards "World's Best Blended Malt Whisky"!
(Fascinating to seeing how whisky is made and how it is stored in wooden casks, but I personally am more interested in their sibling company, Minami Shinshu Beer. Nearby is their restaurant featuring foods that complement craft beer.)

浅間山の登山口に天狗温泉「浅間山荘」がある。お湯は鉄鉱成分の濃さで有名。

先日の浅間山の登山の後に立ち寄りで入らせて頂きました。私が今まで体験した温泉の中で天狗温泉のお湯が赤褐色していて、吃驚しました。尚且つ、お湯が濁っていて透明度はほぼゼロで更に吃驚しました。手先とかをちょっとでも入れてみたら、見えなくなるぐらい。とっても魅力的なお湯。

以前に北信の鉄分の多い温泉に行った際、「白い手ぬぐいをお湯に入れたら真赤になる」と言われた。やってみたが、あまり。無理にして湯口に擦ったら、少し赤くなった程度だった。

天狗温泉のお湯の鉄鉱成分はとにかく本当に濃い、印象深い温泉です。源泉はぬるい為に沸かされています。

「浅間山荘」と言えば大半皆さんは1972年の人質事件を思い出すかもしれないが、これだけ独特のお湯のある温泉はその事件に蒔けたらもったいない。段々と進化してきている天狗温泉は7月20に展望風呂もオープン。

At the main trailhead for climbing Mt. Asama is Tengu Onsen "Asama Sanso" mountain lodge, famous for its onsen water high in iron content.

After our recent climb of Mt. Asama, we stopped at Tengu Onsen for a soak in their onsen bath. Not only was the color of the mineral water a deep orangish-brown from the iron, but its translucency level was practically zero. You dip your fingers in, and they seem to disappear. This is some very serious onsen water.

Now, I had been in onsen baths with high iron content before. One in Northern Nagano bragged that your white hand towel would come out orange. I tried, and it didn't. With Tengu Onsen's mineral water though, my hand towel instantly turned orange when dipped in the bath. The only drawback I could see was the onsen source's temperature is relatively low so it has to be heated for the baths.

The facilities are a bit, err, rustic and the window doesn't offer much of a view, but Tengu Onsen's mineral water is something that has to be experienced to be believed. And on July 20th, 2013, they open their new Tenbo (view) bath which should offer much improved facilities.

Asama Sanso is unfortunately best known for a hostage incident that took place there in 1972. But it's unique onsen waters are sure to please guests today.

天狗温泉浅間山荘 Tengu Onsen Asama Sanso

欧米の公の森林にRanger（森林保護官）という制度がある。
自然を守りながら訪ねる方に森林を説明し、緊急の時に安全活動もする。

浅間山を天狗温泉（浅間山荘）から登る時に途中にログハウスがある。火山館です。給水やトイレがあるし、2階は浅間山の自然を説明する資料館となっている。そこに館長の神田さんが親切に浅間山のうんちくを教えてくれる。神田さんは私に言わせたらRangerです。

今回、息子と登山した時に休憩している間に神田さんが色々と親切に教えてくれた。浅間山の3つの重なった火山の独特のチリから登山の歴史まで、その話を聞いてさらに浅間山のファンになりました。特に、この火山の地理が奥深くて面白い。登って行く中で目の前に浅間山の2万4300年前からの歴史が見える。

神田さんと浅間山「火山館」が信州の宝物だと思った。

Back in the States, many national and state parks and wilderness areas have Rangers -- people that work to preserve nature while interpreting that nature to visitors, as well as providing help in times of emergencies.

On our recent climb of Mt. Asama, we found the 2-story log house along the way that is Kazankan ("Volcano Hall"). Besides providing water and toilet facilities for climbers, the 2nd story is a geological museum of the mountain. And Kanda-san, the live-in director, happily fills in the details with his thorough knowledge.

During our rest stops there, Kanda-san described the 24,300 year geological history of the mountain and explained where the various stages of the 3-in-1 volcano development can be seen. Mt. Asama is the only volcano in the world to actually be 3 separate mountains that grew on top of each other. All of that dynamic activity can be seen in the peaks and ridges that make up Mt. Asama.

And the mountain's history of human interaction is equally as fascinating. Kanda-san took the time to explain that to us as well. He may not have the title of "Ranger", but in my mind that is what Kanda-san is.

…などある様に、国際的な町。
その中でもう一つ国際基準な場所がある：

日本浮世絵博物館

会議の為に松本へ行ったついでに館長の酒井邦男さんに挨拶しに行きました。今の展示「富士山の文化＆日本の音楽Ⅱ」を見させて頂きました。

酒井さんは十一代目となる。酒井家六代目の酒井平助義明(d.1842)から浮世絵の収集が始まったそうです。大手な問屋さんだった方で芸術に興味があったところから始まって、今は世界最大の浮世絵コレクションで10万点以上あるそうです。現在も国内外で展示会や浮世絵の研究の実施など貴重な活動なされている。

事前に問合せをすれば酒井館長がいらっしゃれば展示されている浮世絵を説明してくれることがあります。それ無くても、それぞれの絵に説明文書があるので、十分楽しめる。

私が行く度に勉強になります。今回は黒船のペリーの浮世絵もあって、私の地元のアメリカと日本の深い繋がりをなお、感じました。

and add one more item to the list of reasons Matsumoto is such an internationally acclaimed city:

The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum.

On the way to a recent meeting in Matsumoto, I stopped in to the museum to speak with Kunio Sakai, the head curator. Kunio-san is the 11th generation of the Sakai family, historically one of Matsumoto City's wealthiest wholesalers. The 6th generation Heisuke Yoshiaki-san had an interest in the arts and started the ukiyo-e collection which has since grown to the largest in the world comprising of over 10,0000 prints. The museum holds showings both throughout Japan and overseas and is a 'living collection' that is constantly expanding and providing research into both classic and modern ukiyo-e.

The current exhibit is entitled "The Heritage of Mt. Fuji" and "Japanese Music II". Fuji-san was recently selected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, hence the exhibit about Japan's most famous mountain. And the Music series highlights the influence from the West, including an ukiyo-e portait of Commodore Perry of Black Ships fame. Ukiyo-e has a habbit of bringing me closer to the ties that connect Japan and my home country of America.

松本の日本浮世絵博物館 Matsumoto's Japan Ukiyo-E Museum

戸倉上山田温泉から県道498号と494号のくねくねした山みちを通れば聖湖に辿り着く。湖沿いに聖博物館がある。人口3017人（平成25年7月1日現在）の小さい麻績村の小さい博物館。数年前に家族で行きましたが、蝶々の展示や剥製カモシカ、謎な戦闘機。つまり、博物館実態が博物館って感じ。

しかし、偉いなのは寂びて行っちゃうことを許さずに、一年間ぐらい休館して改造工事した。麻績宿を重点して善光寺街道や周辺の紬歴史に合わせて展示をリニューアルした。今までなかったかわら版を作り出して、地方の新聞に折り込んで運と宣伝するようになった。生まれ変わった聖博物館の諦めない精神にエール！

ちなみに、私ども家族の夏の日帰りドライブの気に入る行き先が聖湖です。湖でボートを乗ったり、湖沿いのレストランで地元の食材に特化した料理を食べて、三峰山のリフトで頂上まで行ってスライダーで下りて、そしてこの聖博物館。聖湖は割と穴場的な存在で真夏でもあまり混まない。お勧めです！

The Hijiri Museum in little population 3,017 Omi Village had been quite outdated -- almost a museum in and of itself with stuffed mountain goats on display, a butterfly collection, and some WWII remnant aircraft and missile launchers. But the local folks decided to not let their quaint museum rust in to oblivion. They closed it down for a year to remodel it. Now the museum is celebrating its reopen with displays featuring the local silk making history as well as the Zenkoji Kaiko road between Matsumoto and Nagano City, on which Omi-juku was one of the post towns.

駒ヶ根に行った時についでに観光案内所・駒ヶ根ファームズの道の駅に寄りました。その裏にでかい吊り橋「こまくさ橋」があって、渡ってみると「森と緑のアウトドア体験広場」がありました。太田切川沿いの公園で、山野草の庭やクライミングウォールがあって、「これはまた時間がある時にもっと深く探検しよう」と思いました。

そして、川の側に不思議な看板があった。
「危険だから入るな」
ではなくて、
「自分の身を自分で守ろう」
って書いてあった。

つまり、川で遊んでおいで♪　…との事。

保守的な日本でこんな親切な場所があるんだ！絶対にこの夏は子供達を連れて川で遊びたいと思った。

駒ヶ根・太田切川「森と緑アウトドア体験広場」は中央道駒ヶ根ICから降りて約５分で、南信にお越しになる際、お勧めなスポットです。

During my recent trip to Komagane in southern Nagano Prefecture, I stopped at the Komagane Farms visitors center. Behind the center crossing the Odakiri River is a grand suspension walking bridge, Komakusa-bashi. On the other side is the Mori to Midori Outdoor Experience Park. With a alpine flower garden and a climbing wall, I thought the park definitely deserves another trip for further exploration.

Then I spotted a sign by the river. Instead of "Dangerous -- Do Not Enter", it said "Enter at Your Own Risk". In other words, "Come play in the river!" Here in conservative Japan! What a refreshing concept.

I can't wait to come back this summer with our kids to play in the river!

森と緑アウトドア体験広場 Mori to Midori Outdoor Experience Park

信州は本当に自然で恵まれている。先日は子供達を連れて、野尻湖でキャンプしました。朝に早く起きて、日の出が見えました。北信の雄大の山々に静かな野尻湖、絵のような空と湖での反射、信州の大自然でホッとしました。

子供達に見せれて、良かった。

野尻湖のキャンプ場は湖沿いという贅沢な場所。そこで泳げるし、ボートもある、湖遊びはたっぷりできる。真夏はきっと混むだろうけど私達が行った初夏の平日で貸切状態だった。キャンプの料金は高目に感じたけどお水、トイレ、料理場などの設備は完備だった。

まあ、その日の出はいくらお金を払っても買えないから。

Nagano Prefecture is blessed with spectacular natural scenery. Recently I took our kids to go camping at Nojiri Lake in northern Nagano. We were treated to one of the most beautiful sunrises. It made me realize even more just how special Nagano is.

I was so happy to be able to share that time with our kids.

The Nojiri Lake campground is located right at a swimming beach on the lake. You simple can't beat the location. I'm sure it gets crowded in the middle of the summer, but the day we went, a weekday at the start of summer, we had the place to ourselves. The campground seemed a bit pricey, but considering the water, toilet and cooking facilities, and that amazing view, it's worth it.

菅平は日本のラグビーメッカです。真夏でも涼しい菅平高原は既に日本一流大学のラグビー合宿として愛されている。これだけ良いグラウンド（108枚も！）、良い設備がそろっていて、分かる様な気がする。2019年のラグビーW杯は日本で開催されるって菅平の影響が少なくないと思う。世界からのラグビー団の合宿の為にすでに準備が必死。

先日は長野県旅館青年部の集まりでサッカー大会を菅平の一つなグラウンドでやりました。贅沢でした！あの雄大の山々の麓であの素敵なグラウンドで我々いい加減の若旦那達（若女将も一人）がサッカー何って、ラグビー選手の皆さんに申し訳ない。

その後はまたもう一つな菅平の文化:バーベキューを楽しませて頂きました。2019年に世界選手の皆様も体験して頂きたいよね。

With its incredible selection of sports fields (108 rugby fields!) and high-altitude training grounds, Sugadaira is known as Japan's rugby mecca. Teams from Japan's top schools come here to train in the summer. Japan has been selected to host the 2019 Rugby World Cup, due in no small part to Sugadaira, I'm sure.

Recently the Nagano Prefecture Junior Ryokan Association held a mini-soccer tournament in Sugadaira. We got to play on one of those top-grade sports fields. Compared to the real athletes that usually compete here, no doubt we looked like bumbling idiots. But with that awesome field and the Sugadaira's stunning mountains as our backdrop, I can definitely understand the area's popularity with sports teams.

After the soccer games, we gathered for another Sugadaira specialty -- a barbecue. I hope the international athletes that gather here in 2019 will get to experience this side of Sugadaira, too.
