先週は菅平・大松スキー場で滑った。ゲレンデがちょっと短かったもうちょっとチャレンジが欲しかったから次の週はリベンジでまた菅平に来ました。今度は太郎とダボスエリア。主の目的は奥ダボスからのスノーキャットツアーだったけどついでに太郎をダボスを息子と滑った。

菅平スキー場は場所的に割と便利。上信越高速道路の上田・菅平ICから車で約40分。（上田駅からバスも出ている;約50分、冬には一日11本。）

しかし、問題はこの旅館の若旦那はお客さんのチェックアウトと次のお客さんのチェックインしか時間を取れないので短い間しか滑れない。

菅平・大松は3時間のリフト券もスキーセットレンタルもあったから割と親切でした。太郎・ダボスエリアは3時間リフト券があるが、レンタルは一日レンタルしかない。「三時間しか滑られえんやから安くならない?」と交渉してみたが、負けました。

ぶーぶー言いながらリフトへ。ダボス、奥ダボス、太郎、皆を滑りましたが、結局大松に負けないぐらい短い。初心者には良いかもしれませんが、中級（?）ぐらい私には物足りなかった。

One week ago, I went skiing at Sugadaira's Ohmatsu Area. I was a bit disappointed with how short the courses were and the lack of variety. So this week, in making a 'revenge' trip back to Sugadaira, my son and I tried the Taro and Davos areas. One ulterior motive was to take the Oku-Davos Snow Cat tour -- more on that later.

Sugadaira is one of the most conveniently-located ski resorts in Nagano. It is only 40 minutes by car from the Ueda Sugadaira IC on the Joshinetsu Expwy, and there is bus service from Ueda Station (approx. 50 minutes, 11 runs a day in winter).

Unfortunately, for this innkeeper, my time was limited to the period between customer checkout and checkin. That was fine for at Ohmatsu, as they had not only 3-hour ski lift tickets but 3-hour ski set rental as well.

At Taro/Davos, while they did have 3-hour lift tickets, all rentals were for full day. I tried to negotiate with the guy for a 1/2 day discount, but to no avail.

So with an unexpectedly light wallet, it was off to the slopes. Kenny and I skiied pretty much all the slopes in Taro and Davos, and it turns out they are even shorter than across the plateau at Ohmatsu. Great for beginners, but a disappointment for Kenny and I.

菅平スキー場 Sugadaira Ski Resort

松本市内に主の温泉地は2ヶ所ある：浅間温泉と美ケ原温泉。

美ケ原温泉は民宿から大手リゾートまで、17件の宿泊施設がある。大半の宿は小さ目な家族経営で、「民芸」の雰囲気が多い。温泉街のそばに松本民芸館もあるし、温泉組合の言葉通り、「歴史的由緒ある、落ちついた雰囲気の湯の里」です。

立ち寄り「白糸の湯」は蔵造りの景観で美ケ原温泉の全体を代表が出来る。

美ケ原温泉 Utsukushigahara Onsen

松本市の美ケ原温泉の名宿「旅館すぎもと」に行ってきました。「民芸の宿」と知られているすぎもとは、館内だけで冒険が出来るような作り。地下道やツリーハウス付きの露天風呂、秘密バー、中庭を眺める足湯、最高級の音楽音声のラウンジなどなど。お料理も芸術的で、宿主が自ら打つお蕎麦が有名。

One of Nagano Prefecture's most renowned inns is Ryokan Sugimoto in Matsumoto City's Utsukushigahara Onsen. Known for its 'Mingei' (folk art) theme, Sugimoto has enough charm just in its premises to provide for a whole day of fun exploration: an underground passage, an outdoor bath with a tree house, a footbath looking out to the naka-niwa central garden, a secret bar, a lounge with pro-quality sound system, and so much more. And the food was so artistic.

信州高山村の松川渓谷に伝説の「滝の湯」があります。川のそばの17メーターの混浴岩風呂が有名です。以前はグリーンシーズンで行った事があるけど、この冬は子供達を連れて、初めて雪の時に行きました。雪をかぶっている木と岩でかくまれて、刺激的でした。
冬は周辺のスキー場のシャトルバスがあるから、車なくても行けるチャンス!

Shinshu-Takayama Village's legendary Taki no Yu onsen features a 17-meter long mixed-bathing outdoor bath made out of bolders, along the side of the Matsukawa River in the gorge of the same name. I'd been there in the green season before, but this was my first time to go in the winter with the surrounding trees and rocks covered by a blanket of snow.

In the winter, a shuttle bus runs to the nearby ski areas so Taki no Yu is accessible even without a car.

Shinshu-Takayama Village in the mountains east of Nagano is famous for the picturesque Matsukawa Gorge, and the distinctive Highway 351 red bridge. It is especially visually stunning in contrast with the white snow.

軽井沢クリスマスの２ヶ所目はプリンスアウトレットモール。今度はクリスマスショッピングの為だったが、彩なイルミネーションで感動しました。ここで派手なクリス舞う気分になる!

Next stop on our Christmas holiday in Kariuzawa was the Prince Outlet Mall. Our main intent was to shop for gifts, but we didn't let that get in the way of enjoying the colorful illumination.

軽井沢プリンスショッピングプラザ Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza

長野県はクリスマスの人気スポットの一つは軽井沢。家族で半日の休みを取って行ってきました。まず訪ねたのは星野リゾートのハルニレテラス。お洒落な飾りでクリスマス気分になりました。トンボの湯までの小路沿いに所々に蝋燭のランタンがあって、細かいところまで上品な飾りが印象的。

ハルニレテラス、トンボの湯、ブレストンコートが合わせて、１２月に「クリスマスタウン軽井沢」に生まれ変わる。コンサートやイルミネーションなど楽しめる。

Karuizawa is one of Nagano's most popular Christmas spots. Our family took a half a day off and visited the resort town, first stopping at Hoshino Resort's Harunire Terrace. The wooden-decked shopping area was elegantly appointed with Christmas decorations that seemed to match the forest setting along a little gurgling creek. The area is adorned with classy details like candle lanterns lining the walking trail to the Tonbo no Yu onsen bathhouse.

Harunire Terrace along with the bathhouse and the nearby Bleston Court hotel are all decorated up for most of December as "Christmas Town Karuizawa" with concerts and illumination to be enjoyed.

冬は海外から長野のスキー場に大勢なスキー客が来ます。長野駅が交通のハブになる。先日は白馬で会議があったので、スキー客の立場になってバスに乗ってみました。

楽ちんでした!

バス停は分かり易いし、運転士は日本語を話せない人とやり取りするのに慣れていた様だし、大きい荷物がバスに下には入れるし、なかなか良いシステム。

スキー場バス情報：

長野駅―白馬　約60分、冬は一日14本、1500円 アルピコ
長野駅ー野沢温泉　約80分、冬は一日6本、1400円　長電
（戸狩駅ー野沢温泉　約15分、冬は一日9本、300円　のざわ温泉交通）
長野駅ー志賀高原　約70分、冬は一日9-10本、1600円　長電

Every winter, thousands of skiers come to Nagano from overseas to ski. And a lot of them pass through Nagano Station, the hub for busses to Hakuba, Nozawa Onsen and Shiga Kogen. I recently had a meeting in Hakuba, so I took the bus to see how it is for the skiers.

And, it was so simple!

The bus stop outside of Nagano Station was clearly marked, the driver was accustomed to dealing with people who don't speak Japanese, and everyone's oversize luggage fit easily in the belly of the bus.

Here are the common bus routes:

Nagano - Hakuba: approx, 60 min., 14 busses daily, 1500 yen (Alpico)
Nagano - Nozawa: approx. 80 min., 6 busses daily, 1400 yen (Nagaden)
(Or, from Togari Nozawa Onsen Station, 15 minutes, 9 busses daily in winter, 300 yen, Nozawa Onsen Kotsu)
Nagano - Shiga Kogen: approx. 70 min., 9-10 busses daily in winter, 1600 yen, Nagaden

安曇野市の穂高温泉郷にこんな剽軽な足湯があります:

「八面大王の足湯」

穂高のペンシオン街の中心にある子の足湯の真ん中に八つの鬼の顔が見下ろしている。地元の伝説の八面大王だそうです。

子供達を連れて、入ってみましたが、それぞれの面を楽しみながら、足湯にゆっくり入れました。お湯の温度は40℃ぐらいで、透明・無臭ですが、そのお面と森の中の位置で十分楽しめた。

In Azumino City's Hotaka Onsen district is this funky onsen footbath,

"8-Faced King" ('Hachimen Daiou')

Located in the middle of Hotaka Onsen's pension village, this footbath has 8 stone faces in the middle looking down on the people using the bath. It supposedly is related to a local legend regarding an 8-faced ogre.

I brought our kids to the footbath, and we enjoyed being amused by the faces as we soaked our feet. The temperature was a mild 40C, and the onsen water was clear and lacked any mineral smell, but we still enjoyed the funky faces and the foresty setting.
