我が家族の夏休みのお泊りは大町温泉のかしわ荘でした。選んだ理由はクチコミの評判でした。その評判通り、宿の英顔が素晴らしかったです。特に、若女将のさちえさん。お会いできて、嬉しかったです。同業者で話がうんと盛り上がっていて、とにかくさちえさんのパワーに感心しました。お互いに頑張りましょうね！
One of our favorite things about our summer vacation is staying at someone else's ryokan. This time we chose Kashiwa-so in Omachi Onsen, mostly for all the good customer comments. And the comments were right -- the people at the inn were so energetic and friendly, especially the proprietress: Sachie-san. It was fantastic meeting her, and we hit it off right away, comparing stories about running our ryokans. Sachie-san's power and charisma is so catching. I wish her the best with running her inn!

黒部ダムと立山アルペンルート:信州の有名な観光地のトップ５ぐらいに入るようです。信州の旅館を経営している中でこういうところも知るべきだと言うことで、今日は初めて行って見ました。トンネルのトロリーバスやケーブルカーやロープウェーなど色々な乗り物を楽しめるし、ダムが確かに世界レベルな大きさで感動的；でも一番気に入ったのは室堂の地獄谷でした。
がっかりの事はダム及びそれぞれの設備は５０年前ぐらいに完成されて、今日は高いお金が取られる：５０年前の工事を払い続いているかとにかく全部は５０年前のままでした。新しい設備は１つもなかった。５０年前にコンクリートが流行っていたかどうか知りませんが、せっかく大自然な場面なのにコンクリートのイメージが残る。そして、見所よりお土産屋さんが多かった。５０年前の日本の旅行文化に合っているかもしれませんが今の日本人の旅行にーづに合わないでしょう。台湾人の団体客が最近に多くなっているって聞いて、台湾人の旅行文化がまだ育ってきている途中だ（５０年前の日本の様）って聞いて、なるほどな。天辺の地獄谷こそ、原風景を残しているＹｅｌｌｏｗｓｔｏｎｅ国立公園と比べて、人間の手がかけ過ぎていたと思いました。
日本アルプスに行きたい方に上高地の方が大自然を楽しめるのでお勧めです。立山なら、お土産屋さんじゃなく、トレッキングですね。
Kurobe Dam and the Tateyama Alpen Route ranks probably in the top 5 of Nagano's tourism destinations. So as an innkeeper in Nagano, I felt it necessary to go. The dam is one of the biggest in the world, and transportation is via tunnel trolley busses, cable cars and rope ways. The part we liked the best was Jigokudani ("Hell Valley") at the top, alive with volcanic activity.
The dam and the various buildings were completed about 50 years ago. The cost for all of this was very expensive. I'm not sure if the money is still going to pay off the construction costs, but there certainly hasn't been any new construction since then. In fact, there were more souvenir shops than sights to see. I think Japan's travel culture has grown out of this type of tourism. In fact, a large proportion of the tourists we saw were Taiwanese, whose travel culture is perhaps at a less developed stage. For people wanting to see the Japanese Alps, I recommend the natural beauty of Kamikochi. Or, if you go to Tateyama, go trekking instead of souvenir shopping!

休みの良いところの１つは普段に行けない場所に行ける事。戸倉上山だと松本の間に坂北と言う小さな村があって、同名の駅で可愛い手造りの地図があったと言うのは以前に見ました。駅から歩ける距離で善光寺街道青柳宿があって、そのガイドマップでした。今日は時間があったので寄ってみました。スローライフの天国みたいな感じでした。住宅の全部はやごが付いていたり、七夕の為に皆は特徴な飾りを付けていました。こういう小さな村が手作りな地図で青柳宿を大事にしているのはえらいと思います。
One of the nice things about a vacation is you can stop to see places you don't normally have time to do so. In between Togura-Kamiyamada and Matsumoto is a small village named Sakakita. One time I was on a train that stopped at the station of the same name, and saw a hand-made map of the town's Aoyagi-Juku, a post town on the old Zenkoji Road. We stopped there today and toured around, enjoying the 'slow-life' ambience. I think it's great that the village is supporting the post town with hand-made maps like this.

長野に来てから霧ヶ峰のニッコウキスゲの写真を良く見ました。真緑の野原で目が見れる限りで黄色花がずっと。。。でも、一度も行った事が無く。
そして、見てきたお客様に「今は満開だ！」と言われて、今日は家族でドライブで思い切って行って来ました。そうすると、写真通り、ニッコウキスゲがうんと綺麗でした。
Ever since I moved to Nagano, I'd seen pictures of the yellow day lilies of Kirigamine. It seemed like some sort of dreamscape: waves of bright yellow flowers against the rolling hills of the Kirigamine highlands. I'd always wanted to go, and then some of our guests who had stopped there on their way to Kamesei mentioned the flowers were in full bloom. So today, we grabbed the kids and hopped in our car for a drive. And I can truly say that seeing the day lilies in person is as magical or more than in pictures.

我が息子達と友達を連れて、上山田の秘密の虫スポットに行って来ました。クワガタムシゲット成功！

I took our sons and some of their friends beetle hunting at a secret bug spot here in Kamiyamada. They succeeded in getting a prized Kuwagata Horned Beetle!

軽井沢観光協会に呼んで頂いて、軽井沢町をインバウンド関係の方々と一日回りました。テーマは「雨の日でも楽しめる」と言う事で、楽焼やグラス吹き、皮グッズ造り、Ｓａｕｓａｇｅ造り、体験コースたっぷりの楽しい一日でした。個人的に軽井沢でしか出来ないレンタル自転車ぶらぶらや軽井沢彫工場見学の方が軽井沢らしさが出ると思いました。でも、実際にグラス吹きを始めてやってみたら「こんな楽しいことがあるんや！」と思ってしまいました。軽井沢が長野県の観光の宝物だとよく分かりました。
As a guest of their Tourism Bureau, I was invited to partake in a special 'Inbound' tour of Karuizawa. The theme was enjoying Karuizawa on a rainy day, and went around to various shops and tried our hand at making sausage, painting ceramics, blowing glass and stamping leather. While Karuizawa is also popular for its woodwork and cruising round town on rental bicycles, a day of craft-making was really enjoyable.

いつも思いますが、日本の神社の作りが美しいです。戸倉上山田温泉から車で１５分ぐらいに武水別神社があります。先日は久しぶりに見ました。そして、裏側から入りました。周りのでかいケヤキの木のの緑の葉っぱと神社の建物の細かい木造の合わせがうんと綺麗でした。
昔は戦いの神様だったので、信玄も謙信も来ているようです。現在は交通安全の神様だそうです。えらい変わりましたね。
I've always been impressed by the beauty of Shinto shrines in Japan. One such shrine is about 15 minutes away from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen by car: Takemizuwake Shrine in Yawata, Chikuma City. I went there for the first time in a long time a couple of days ago, and was amazed by the detailed woodwork of the main building.
This shrine was traditionally dedicated to a god of war, and was visited by many major samurai warriors. Nowadays, it's dedicated to safe driving. That's a big change!

長野に引越ししてきて良かった理由の１つは周辺にキャンプが出来るところが沢山ある事です。いきなりキャンプしたいと思えば、出来ちゃう。夕べは正にそうでした。息子達を連れて、テントと寝袋をしょって、戸倉上山田温泉の裏の１２５２ｍの冠着山の頂上でキャンプした。（登山口は温泉から車で１５分、そして歩いて２０分で頂上に到着）。朝に早く起きたら、千曲川の谷の雲海の上からのご来光がちょうど見えて、夢のような世界でした。
One of the things I like about Nagano is being able to readily go camping. There are mountains all around us, so if you decide at the last minute to go camping, it's very easy to do. Like our sons and I decided to do last night. We packed our tents and sleeping bags, and drove to the Mt. Kamuriki (1252m) trailhead (about 15 minutes by car from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen), walked the 20 minutes to the top, and camped out. We woke up early in the morning, and were treated to the dream-like scene of the sun rising over the cloudy Chikuma River valley.

亀清旅館の売店で紫米を売っています。クロスロードと言う身体障害者の為の施設が作っています。古米の一種で普通のお米にちょっとだけ入れたら全部が紫になります。
そこまで私が分かっていました。この間は近場の田んぼで、いつもの緑色の中で紫の色もあって、びっくりしました。考えてみれば、紫米の稲も紫だと言うことが当たり前です。でも、始めた見ると驚きますよね！
At our little sales counter here at Kamesei Ryokan, we sell Purple Rice. A local facility for mentally impaired people produces it. It's an ancient strain of rice, and when you add a little bit with normal rice when you cook it the whole thing turns purple.
That much I knew. The other day, I happened to see a rice paddy nearby that, among the normal green rows, had some dark purple rows, too. If you think about it, it makes sense that purple rice would have purple stalks, but it was still surprising to see it for the first time!

週末にお客さんを連れて姨捨の長楽寺によりました。ひとつな建物の屋根がずっと工事中でしたが、今回に見たら工事が完成でした。萱の屋根の材料や技術者がほとんどない中で、こんな素敵な屋根が出来たのは大したものだ！周辺の姨捨駅でＪＲの特別スイッチバック列車を見に来ていた人たちに長楽寺にも足を運んでもらいたかった。
Last weekend I took a guest to see the Chorakuji Temple. One of the buildings' roofs had been under construction for the longest time, but is now finally finished. The thatched roof is spectacular, especially considering thatch is hard to come by, as well as carpenters who know how to do it.
There were lots of people at nearby Obasute Station taking photos of JR's special Switchback train -- I wish some of them had come to see Chorakuji, too.
