Inariyama Townscape Talk this Saturday 6/25

Reasons to Come to Nagano

Reasons to Come to Nagano

One of the Seven

Last year, our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada, made a 'Fuku-Fuku Tour' flier showcasing our local religious sites. 'Fuku' means 'luck' and the tour refers to the Shichifukujin (7 Lucky Gods)Meguri tours common throughout Japan.

Our town's tour hasn't been very popular, and I discussed the matter with my buddy Miyasaka-san, a travel publication producer experienced in promoting tourist areas to travellers. He kindly took me to Nagano City to see the Zenkoji version. Along with some websurfing, I ended learning a lot more about the 7 Gods of Luck than I had intended.

If you've spent any amount of time in Japan, you've likely come across the Shichifukujin. All 7 bear a slight resemblance to the Stay Puft Marshmallow man with their pudgy builds and jovial expressions. The various members have individual characteristics -- a lute player here, a conehead there, a guy carrying a red snapper over there, etc. You'll often see them riding a 'takara-bune' boat carrying treasures. They're a cosmopolitan bunch, originating from not only Japan but China and India as well. They also have various religious backgrounds including Buddhist, Shintoist and, likely enough, Taoist.

Perhaps the most well-known of the 7 gods of luck is Ebisu. If you've ever had a Japanese beer, you may have run into him as Sapporo makes a beer named 'Ebisu'. He's the guy holding the red snapper, and his picture is on the label.

I could go into detail about the 7 gods, including what each one represents, but a) there is a lot of good info already on the web -- just google "shichifukujin"; and b) I'm still learning myself.

Anyways, Japanese people supposedly have an affinity for the 7 gods of luck and tours involving the shichifukujin are popular. The Zenkoji version features a sort of stamp rally based on a collection of temples and shrines with images of the gods on their grounds. For example, pictured is a statue of Jurojin near the entrance of Karukayasan Temple.

If Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen can configure a walking tour based on the 7 gods of luck, we should be a bit more successful in interesting travellers to come.

Day trip to Matsumoto: Sample Itinerary

Reasons to Come to Nagano

Matsumoto City is a popular place to stop on the way to or from Kamesei / Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. Our family took a rare day off to go for a drive and explore the town.

Unfortunately, many visitors to 'Moto see the famous castle and call it good. There is so much more to the town, people should really get out and explore it.

We based our wanderings around the shopping streets Nawate and Nakamachi. There's everything from antique shops to clothing boutiques that the proprietress loves, and outdoor goods shops that I love. And with all the water features around town including riverside parks and drinking wells, the kids never got bored.

You could conceivable get lost in the shopping all day, but you eventually have to take a break to eat. And Matsumoto certainly has you covered with a corncupia of unique restaurants. This trip, we patronized burger shop U2 and pizza / pasta restaurant Seattle (Hmm, I've heard that name somewhere).

It would be a shame not to also see some of Matsumoto's cultural attractions, too. This time we passed on seeing the city's art museum because we had plans to see the Kodo taiko concert at the classy Performing Arts Center. Some of the patrons were dressed in kimono -- people in Matsumoto really know how to do it up right.

Next weekend is Matsumoto's annual Craft Fair. So if you are in Nagano on May 28th or 29th, consider attending the Craft Fair. And if you weren't planning on coming, perhaps you should -- this is a legitimate arts and crafts fair, one of Japan's largest.

And then make the trip to Kamesei for a bath (only 45 minutes by car, or 45 minutes from Matsumoto Station to Obasute Station).

Nozawa Onsen's Heart and Soul: Tokiwaya Ryokan

Reasons to Come to Nagano

Nozawa Onsen is the type of onsen village that people in the ryokan industry love. It's got a handful of really classy inns, the 13 public baths including the venerable 'Oyu', the 'Ogama' hot spring source where locals gather to wash vegetables, a world class ski resort next door, a lively townscape with lots of small shops to browse, and the annual Fire Festival held every January 15th.

Across the street from Oyu is Tokiwaya Ryokan, founded 370 years ago -- Nozawa's most historical inn.

2 years ago, Tokiwaya was set to go bankrupt and be bought out by a foreign firm.

If a minor ryokan were sold out and turned into a budget accommodation, the townspeople no doubt would have resigned themselves to that fate. However, Tokiwaya is the heart and soul of the village. A group of locals decided to pool their resources and by the inn, keeping it locally-owned and maintaining its rich legacy.

The 'wakadanna' (junior owner) is in my prefectural level junior innkeepers association committe, and some of the other members and I gathered at Tokiwaya yesterday. We got to hear the story of the inn, as well as get a tour. The '1000-person' bath and the individual dining rooms (made even before such a style became the fad) were especially impressive.

I wonder if we can develop Kamesei Ryokan into becoming a 'legacy ryokan', too.

Another Iiyama Popular Spot: Mayumi Takahashi Doll Museum

Reasons to Come to Nagano

Misaki outside the Mayumi Takahashi Doll Museum

Besides seeing the nanohana flower fields, our drive to Iiyama had another purpose: to see the Mayumi Takahashi Doll Museum.

Opened just in April of last year, the museum has attracted visitors from all over Japan to see Mayumi-san's unique dolls that adroitly depict the type of country bumpkins one is apt to see in Iiyama's backroads.

The museum itself has surprisingly little display space, but that is more than compensated by the enjoyment that can be had from looking at each individual doll's expression and composure, especially in relation to the background displays.

The doll museum is set in a neighborhood filled with the type of traditional Japanese buildings that I love. Especially impressive is 'Butsudan-dori (street)'. A Butsudan is a Buddhist altar that most families in Japan have in a prominent place in their houses. I had heard that Iiyama is a major manufacturer of Butsudan, but I wasn't aware that there was a whole street of Butsudan shops! I guess it makes sense, though, to have a Butsudan shopping district here in Japan.

There was an interesting phenomenon that came out of seeing the doll museum. Driving around the town and in outlying farming areas afterwards and seeing the old ladies bent over in the fields or the old gentlemen walking along the back streets, I started to get a sense of where Mayumi-san got the inspiration for her dolls!

Nanohana Wonderland

Reasons to Come to Nagano

Misaki peek-a-boo with the nanohana

Nagano has numerous headlining flower shows: Takato's cherry blossoms, Anzu no Sato's apricot blossoms, the the pure white 'mizubasho' (unfortunately named 'skunk cabbage' in English) of the Togakushi and Kinasa highlands above Nagano City, and so many more.

One other is that of the 'nanohana' blossoms in Iiyama, which I saw for myself for the first time today. (Nanohana also has an unfortunate name in English: rapeweed. Forgive me as I stick to the Japanese name, nanohana, which has a much more elegant feel.)

I had seen pictures of the fields filled with yellow flowers with the Chikuma River and Nagano's 'five northern peaks' in the background. But pictures don't do the flowers justice. For one thing, seeing them in person means you can enjoy the sweet scent of the flowers wafting on the breeze.

And for another reason, Iiyama's main nanohana park, called simply enough 'Nanohana Park', has a nanohana maize allowing you to immerse yourself in the field amongst the plants bursting with yellow color.

My wife and daughter and I went for a drive today to Iiyama and thoroughly enjoyed the nanohana show. The plants normally bloom between mid April and early May, with special events scheduled from May 3rd to the 5th coinciding with Japan's Golden Week holiday. This year, however, the blossoms are about a week later than usual.

Nagano's Top GW Spots: Kamesei Report

Reasons to Come to Nagano

So, how was your Golden Week holiday? Did you get out and play? We survived GW2011 okay here at Kamesei. Normally, GW is peak season for ryokans like us, but this year was shaping up to be a quiet one with everyone holding back on leisure post-3.11. However, thankfully, we ended up getting a rush of last minute bookings and filled up.

Anyways, I asked all of our guests what sightseeing areas they're hitting in Nagano, and below is a list of the most popular spots:

#1: Zenkoji Temple
There's a legend about being pulled by an ox to Zenkoji -- that ox must have been busy this spring because a good number of our guests made a pilgrimage there either before or after coming to our inn.

#2: Togakushi
Ever since last year, Togakushi has been experiencing a boom in visitors thanks to being recognized as a 'power spot'. The boom is continuing. Guests reported overflowing parking lots, long lines for the soba shops, and -- snow! We can give tips on how to avoid the congestion -- just ask us!

#3: Azumino
NHK's morning 'drama', Ohisama, takes place in Azumino, leading to a number of people checking out the locations that appear in the show. Again, we have plenty of maps and brochures showing Ohisama spots, including the historic Yamaguchi Residence (see map below).

#4: Chausuyama Zoo
Popular with families that brought their kids. The lesser panda display was redone last year, perhaps leading to the popularity.

Matsumoto Castle, Obuse and many other places were also popular. And we have great brochures on all of them -- use Kamesei as your information center.

Updated Train/Bus Schedule for Togakushi 'n Jigokudani

Reasons to Come to Nagano

As the snow in Nagano's highlands starts to melt, the train and bus schedules are adjusted for the green season. I have updated the schedules connecting Togura Kamiyamada Onsen with Togakushi and Jigokudani for post-white season.

Note: Togakushi has been undergoing a 'power spot' boom from last year resulting in overflowing parking lots. If you go, taking the bus from Nagano Station may actually be more convenient. Feel free to use this schedule.

Note: Jigokudani's snow monkeys are cute even when there's no snow. They still soak in the onsen baths in the summer, and the new babies will be born soon so you'll be able to enjoy seeing the little fur balls running all over the place. Hopefully this schedule will make sense out of the bus and train options.

View from the Train of the Majestic Japanese Alps

Reasons to Come to Nagano

The awe-inspiring Alps

Even with the earthquake / tsunami / nuclear radiation problems, life goes on. Rather than just wallowing in sadness and watching the gloomy news on TV all day, we gotta go on with the things that we need to do. Today, I had 3 important meetings to attend in Nagano City and Matsumoto City so I did a bunch of train travel and made some good progress. It's good I did take the train instead of driving -- gas is getting scarce due to people hoarding it.

On the train ride from Nagano Station to Matsumoto Station, there are some spectacular views of the Japanese Alps. Seeing the magnificent mountains somehow helped to lift my psyche.

Mother Nature's power is amazing. That same power that made these mountains moved the earth last week and created the tsunami. Awe and respect.

Simple Fun: Chausuyama Zoo

Reasons to Come to Nagano

Chausuyama Zoo's brochure and notepads that the zookeeper gave us.

Located in Nagano City's Shinonoi district, Chausuyama Zoo is a popular spot for families with kids as well as couples. It's a fairly large zoo and features such unique things to experience as giraffe-feeding. Its location on a hill above the city provides a fantastic view of the valley below as well as the Sugadaira mountains in the distance. And Chausuyama Zoo has some celebrity animals -- the lesser pandas.

In fact, last year the lesser pandas moved into a much more expanded home. Now you can see them up close and they have real trees they can climb.

The last couple of days, there has been nothing but distressing news on TV about the M7.9 earthquake in northeastern Japan. I was in the need for a change of pace, so after seeing off our guests this morning, I took our daughter to go to mass, followed by a trip to the Chausuyama zoo. We were awed by the height of the giraffes, cowered by the imposing presence of the lion, and bemused by the funny faces of the orangutans. It was an enjoyable afternoon.

A simple enjoyable afternoon.

Gazing into the faces of the giraffes and elephant, there was no trace of worry over the earthquake. But on the way out, we ran into the head zookeeper. I had to ask -- were the animals affected? He said the only ones were the chimpanzees and orangutans. The chimps got anxious and ran around their cages; the orangutans even put blankets over their heads. So the animals closest to us humans were traumatized.
