戸倉上山田温泉から車で約20分に上田市下塩尻「蛍の里」があります。18日に行ってみましたが、350匹が舞っていました。19‐20日の雨の後、6月21日・22日に恐らく1000匹以上が舞うでしょう。

戸倉上山田温泉初のおほたる祭り見学ツアーがあります。市の観光協会の提供で、2013年は6月19日（水）から6月23日（日）に夜20:00発で行われています。料金は1000円です。

私達が見に行った時に一緒に行った大阪からの方が「天然の蛍が初めて！」と喜んだ。天然じゃない蛍なんてあるの？と聞いたら、東海のホテルは使い捨て蛍でホタル祭りをやるそうです。そんなに無理にして蛍を見たいなら、信州の天然の蛍を是非に見て来て頂きたいと思っております！

20 minutes by car from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is the Shimo-Shiojiri Hotaru no Sato, home to hundreds of fireflies. Hotaru (as they are called in Japanese) are a rare sight in Japan these days. The locals here protect the environment to preserve the firefly habitat, and hold a Hotaru Festival for people to come and enjoy seeing the fireflies dancing in the air. I went to the 18th and we were rewarded by seeing approximately 350 fireflies. With the rain on the 19th and 20th, over 1000 fireflies are expected on the nights of Friday June 21st and Saturday June 22nd.

Our local tourism association runs Firefly Festival Tours departing from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen at 8pm. For 2013, the tours will take place June 19th to the 23rd. Price is 1000 yen.

One of the people that went to see the fireflies was from Osaka. She was so happy to see natural hotaru. Apparently in the big cities, hotels bring in fireflies from the countryside and release them to perish in their hotel gardens. If people are so desperate to see fireflies, I highly suggest they come to Nagano instead and see them in their natural environment!

戸倉上山田の杏農家「杏宝園」さんは特別な技術で「半生杏」という特産品を作り始まりました。生の杏を乾燥してドライドフルーツにするのは良くあるけど、その中間の「半生」はまだ生に近い感覚と味が残っていて、格別です。

今年の杏の実の時期に合わせて、亀清旅館の板長が料理に取り組んでいるし、亀清旅館の売店でも販売する様になっております。

Local Togura-Kamiyamada apricot orchardist Kyohoen has used a proprietary method to develop 'Han-nama' (="partially fresh") apricots. Not fresh and not dried, but somewhere in between, these Han-nama apricots still have the full apricot flavor and a consistency close to that of fresh apricots.

Here at Kamesei Ryokan, in honor of the aprioct fruit harvest season, our chef has incorportated these Han-nama apricots into his menu. And at our front desk, we are offering the Han-nama apricots for sale as souvenirs to our guests.

地元の杏農家「杏宝園」に顔を出してみた。一つな速い品種はもうできてきた。採りたての杏はやはり美味しい！皆さんは食べた事がありますか？この春は是非、戸倉上山田温泉に杏狩りをしに来てください！

この千曲市の「森」地区は日本一のあんずの里で4月上旬の花見が有名です。実は今年の4月に天皇両陛下も花見しに来ましたぐらい。森地区は当温泉から車で約20分ですが、歩いて15分のさらしな地区に千曲川沿いの杏畑もあります。その農家の杏宝園山は新しい品種の開発や最新の技術を使ってより良い品質の杏を育っています。

今年の花の時期の低温の影響で生産量が減るようです。それにしても、農家の強い意志で、観光客に是非杏の畑に入って頂いて、自分の手で採って、杏狩りを体験して頂きたいです。今年の杏狩り予定は下記の通り:

Kyohoen is our local apricot orchardist here at our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada. I poked my head into their office the other day and was rewarded with a bowl of first-of-the-season apricots. There's nothing like the tartness of a fresh-picked apricot! Have you ever tasted one? This spring, how about coming to Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen and picking apricots yourself?

Here in Chikuma City, the Mori district is known as Japan's #1 'apricot village'. The blossoms in early April are so famous that this year even the emperor and empress came to see them. Mori is a 20-minute drive from our onsen town. A short 15-minute walk away, along the Chikuma River, are the apricot orchards of the Sarashina district. And Kyohoen Apricot Orchards are one of the most modern growers, trying to develop better varieties and using cutting-edge techniques to maximize yield.

This past April our area had some devastating low temperatures that are effecting the apricot trees' production. But the folks at Kyohoen believe strongly in giving guests to our onsen town the opportunity to enter the apricot field and pick fruit themselves. This year's apricot picking schedule is as follows:

杏宝園 Kyohoen

戸倉上山田温泉の上の城山に「縁結び」や「子つくり」に効く奥津神社があります。並んでいる絵まで若い方の「元気な赤ちゃんが生まれる様に」などの願い事が書いてある。

この間に行ったら、こんな可愛い絵馬もありました。恐らく、世界一可愛いじゃないかと。

しかし、奥津神社のご神体は本当に効きます。温泉夏祭りに温泉街をお神輿で回ります。私達が引っ越ししてきてからの最初の夏祭りの10か月後、うちの美咲ちゃんが生まれました。

戸倉上山田温泉にお越しになる際、奥津神社に是非、寄ってみてください。

At many shrines in Japan, you'll find little wooden prayer cards called "Ema" displayed. You can buy one and write your prayer on it. Here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, we have a tiny shrine called Okutsu-jinja. Located on Joyama, the hill behind our onsen town, the shrine is dedicated to couples hoping to have a baby.

The other day when I visited, I spotted this cute message. It has to be the cutest ema ever!

戸倉上山田温泉の夏祭りと千曲川花火大会の準備が本格的に始まりました。2013年度の予定は下記の通り：

温泉夏祭りはこの地域の毎年の一番大きいイベント。
土曜日は午前中に上山田のそれぞれの地域のお神輿。お昼は皆が温泉に集まって、上山田神楽保存会先頭で温泉街を行列する。夕方は民踊流し、夜はご神体のでかいお神輿。
日曜日はお昼から4つのでかいお神輿と勇実獅子が温泉街を巡って、夜は太鼓と花火に合わせてグランフィナーレ。
こんな迫力のある祭りは必見！

第84回千曲川納涼煙火大会

こんなに近くからこんなに大きい花火大会は他にない！真上で光って、光は千曲川で反射して、音は周辺の山々で反射して、感動的！

Preparations for the sumemr festivals here in our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada are under way. Dates for 2013 are as follows:

Togura Kamiyamada Onsen Summer Festival
July 13th and 14th, 2013 (the Saturday and Sunday of the Marine Day holiday weekend)
Saturday starts with processions in the various neighborhoods of Kamiyamada. Then they all gather for one big parade through the onsen town in the early afternoon, led by the Kagura lion dance troupe. In the evening, there is a Minyo dance procession followed by the main omikoshi.
Sunday afternoon, 4 big omikoshi's and the huge Isami Shishi lion process through town, gathering at the main festival site for the grand finale with taiko drumming and fireworks at night.
The festival is one of the most exciting you'll ever see.

84th Annual Chikuma River Fireworks Festival
Wednesday August 7th, 2013. From 7:30pm to 9pm.
Fireworks will light up the night sky above the Chikuma River in front of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. The bursts will practically be directly above you, with the flashes reflecting in the Chikuma River and the sounds reverbrating off the surrounding hills.

母の日の週末です♪　

嬉しい様な、私のお母さんと離れて、さびしい様な…

戸倉上山田は「お母さん達が喜ばれる温泉だ」との運動で、
今年はまた私達旅館青年部が花のコサージュを作りました。

地元の花屋さん「二通園」のNaoki君の教えに従って、旅館若旦那・若女将たち6人で百数十個のコサージュを手作業で作った。ちなみに、先月に天皇陛下がこの千曲市森「日本一あんずの里」に花見しに来た時にNaoki君が杏の花の生け花を作ったそうです。

という事は、今年の母の日のコサージュは何と、
天皇陛下の生け花家の弟子達の作ったコサージュです！

Mothers Day Weekend is here!

(I just wish I was closer to my Mom...)

Once again, in an effort to promote Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's Mother-friendly side, we the junior innkeepers have made corsages to give out to mothers this weekend.

Local florist Nitsuen's Naoki-san took time out to teach us again how to make the corsages, and 6 of us innkeepers and wives spent the morning hand-making the corsages out of carnations.

Last month, Japan's emperor and empress visited our city's Mori district to see the apricot blossoms. Our florist, Naoki-san, was asked to make an ikebana display with the blossoms for the emperor.

So this year, our Mothers Day corsages are extra special (?), as they have been made by students of the emperor's ikebana artist.

The corsages will be handed to out to mothers on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 6am at the Kara-koro Footbath in the center of our onsen town, in conjunction with the Sunday Morning Outdoor Market.

戸倉上山田温泉の一番歴史のある宿が笹屋ホテルです。１９０３年に開業し、昔は天皇陛下や９８年の冬五輪の時にIOCCの会長などが泊まった宿です。宿の一部はフランク・ロイド・ライトの弟子、遠藤新が設計した国の登録有形文化財に指定された「豊年虫」館です。

この立派な宿のお風呂は先日に初めて入らせて頂きました。代表の「石の湯」に入れたが、そのデザイン性、その高級の石、天皇陛下まで泊まったって納得できました。

笹屋ホテルは独自の源泉があるので量は豊富の様で、広々した内風呂も庭の中の露天風呂も、皆は１００％源泉かけ流し。戸倉上山田の温泉らしいお湯が程よい硫黄の香りで、高目なｐH（8.7ぐらい）で肌がすべすべになる。

長野県の代表できるお風呂の一つだと思いました。

Togura Kamiyamada's oldest ryokan is the esteemed Sasaya Hotel. Dating back to 1903, Sasaya has hosted the likes of the emperor of Japan and, during the '98 Nagano Olympics, the IOCC chairman. One of the wings, Honenmushi, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright's protege, Shin Endoh and is designated a national historical treasure.

Just the other day, I finally had a chance to experience Sasaya Hotel's onsen bath myself. I had seen pictures of their famous "Ishi no Yu" (stone bath) but this was the first time to see it personally. The bath's graceful design and the stonework and arches of the bathhouse exude a sense of grace and nobleness. And the outdoor bath's garden setting makes excellent use of the borrowed scenery of the surrounding hills.

Sasaya Hotel has their own dedicated onsen source and it has an impressive volume, as all of their baths are 100% flow-through (no re-circulating). Togura Kamiyamada's mineral water has just the right amount of sulfur presence and the relatively high 8.7pH leaves your skin feeling silky smooth. The temperature was a perfect 41F.

Certainly a bath deserving of the emperor. And, in my opinion, one of the best onsens in all of Nagano.

笹屋ホテル Sasaya Hotel

「牛に引かれて善光寺」の伝説に記念して、
私たち戸倉上山田旅館青年部は毎年、
ゴーレデンウィーク連休の最後の日に、
当温泉から善光寺まで30km歩くイベントを開催しています。
朝7時半ぐらい出て、善光寺に午後3時ごろに付く。
約300人が参加する大イベントです。

今年はうちの長男、アンディー君が一緒に歩きたいと言い出して、ずっと先頭で歩いてくれた。スタッフの法被を着て、しっかりリードしてくれた。ベテランの皆が「来年はアンディー君がレギュラーとして出てもらいたい」と喜んだ。

親として嬉しかった。

アンディー君、そして参加者の皆さん、スタッフの皆さん、引っ張ってくれた牛のさくらちゃん、ご苦労様でした！

戸倉上山田温泉のおかみの会の主催で
「青空朝市」は
今年の5月から11中旬まで
毎週日曜日の朝6時半から
カラコロ足湯の公園で
又開催されます。

今年の始まりの朝市に顔を出してみたら、ものすごく賑やかでした。今の旬の山菜や、珍しい品種のりんご、盆栽からお味噌まで、色んな特製品。

お客さんに紹介したら、「有難う！一杯買いものした！」と喜ばれました。

Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's Ladies Guild is once again putting on a Sunday Morning Outdoor Market. It will take place every Sunday morning from 6:30am at the Kara-Koro Footbath from May to mid-November.

I checked out this year's first market, and was pleased to see so much activity. Everything from bonsai plants to locally-made miso paste, seasonal mountain vegetables to rare varieties of apples.

プロバスケの信州ブレイブウォリアーズの今シーズン最終戦は28日に行われた。会場の戸倉体育館は満員だった。わくわくした試合だったけど、残念ながらホームチームは勝つ事が出来なかった。

今シーズンは試合の時間帯が旅館の若旦那の仕事と合わなくて、結局この最終戦しか行けなかった。でも、うちの子供達を連れて行って、家族で楽しめた。

戸倉上山田温泉でこうやってプロバスケが見れて、嬉しい。会場はこじんまりした大きさだから目の前で選手達が見える。来シーズンは楽しみだな。

The Shinshu Brave Warriors pro hoops team closed out the season with a home game on Sunday the 28th. A capacity crowd watched the exciting game at the Togura Gymnasium, but unfortunately the home team couldn't pull off a win.

The game times this season were not amicable to a inn proprietor's schedule, so the only game I got to see was this last one. But I took our kids and we had a fun family outing.

It's so great that we have pro hoops right here in our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada. And the gymnasium is fairly compact in size, so you get to see the players really up close. I'm already looking forward to next season!
