戸倉上山田温泉では、宿泊者が下駄を履いて温泉街をカランコロンで歩く習慣があります。銀座通りの商店街や楽しいお店もあり、昭和レトロの風情もあり、所々にギャラリーがあり、足湯もあり、そして、２箇所に飲泉所もあります。せっかっく「温泉」に来ればもっと触れ合うように飲泉所で上山田温泉のお湯を飲んでみるのがお勧めです。

温泉の成分は体に良いそうです。上山田温泉は特に硫黄の香織がたっぷり合って、温泉らしいお湯です。

我々旅館においてある戸倉上山田温泉の女将の会の「ぶら～りお散歩」地図に飲泉所が載っていますのでどうぞ、下駄を履いて飲泉所も回ってぶらぶら、カランコロンしてみてください。

It customary for people who come and stay at a ryokan here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen to put on a pair of wooden geta sandals and go for a stroll around the onsen town before dinner. There are plenty of sights to see and things to do, such as sampling the goodies at the shops along Ginza Dori, shopping for souvenirs at the many unique shops, taking pictures of the Showa Retro atmosphere of the bar district, enjoying the several art galleries, and soaking your feet in the foot bath. One other thing people can do is go to one of the 2 spots where you can drink the onsen water.

The hot spring mineral water is of course relaxing to soak in, but the minerals are also good for your body internally as well. And our onsen here at Kamiyamada is the real thing, nice and high in sulfur content.

So if you come to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, pick up one of the walking maps, and stroll around town. Be sure to try drinking the onsen water, too.

戸倉上山田温泉から車で約１５分に開眼寺と言う座禅堂付きのお寺さんがありました。そのお坊さんとコラボレーションで善光寺の七年に一度の御開帳中で座禅プランをやっております。先週の土曜日は始めて実施して、今朝はオーストラリア人のお客さんと次男のKen君と一緒に行きました。朝五時から座禅をやれば、一日は平和的になりますよね。是非、ご一緒にどうぞ？

Aproximately 15 minutes by car from Kamesei and Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is Kaigan-ji Temple, an historic temple that features a modern zazen-do, a room for zen meditation. In collaboration with the monk, Shibata-san, Kamesei is offering a "Zazen at 5am" plan during Zenkoji Temple's once-every-seven-years Gokaicho. Last Saturday was the first time we had a guest sign up for this plan, and this morning I went with a guest from Australia and our #2 son, Kenny. Starting your day with meditation puts you in a peaceful mood for the whole day. Anyone care to join me?

戸倉上山田温泉の写真屋さん、富岡さんがこの面白い車に乗ってきた。私が最初に見た時に、モーターバイクのサイドカーが独自で動いているように見えた。光岡が一時売ろうとした「ぶぶ」と言うミニカーだが、許可が下りなかったせいで販売が途中で中止になったそうです。
言わせて頂けたら、全ての町にこういう面白い車が必要。と言うより、こういう面白い車を乗る、富岡さんのような楽しい人が必要！
Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's funky photographer, Tomioka-san, stopped by driving this crazy contraption of a car. At first I thought it was a motorcycle side car without the motorcycle. Craft car maker Mitsuoka apparently tried selling these "mini-cars" called the "Bu-bu", but never got governmental approval, so production had to be stopped.
If you ask me, all towns need a funky car like the Bu-bu. Or rather, they need a funky man like Tomioka-san driving funky cars like this!

ABNの「駅前テレビ」が戸倉上山田温泉とコラボレーションで三四六さんの目から見た戸倉上山田温泉の「昭和」雰囲気の写真展示会が行います。上山田温泉本通の有田屋さんと言う宿の前の空き店舗は６月いっぱいまでギャラリーになります。５月９日（土）の午後３時に開きました。亀清旅館の若旦那・若女将の凸凹コンビの写真も（笑）。
本通りの空き店舗がこうやってお洒落なギャラリーで利用が出来て、嬉しいです。展示されている写真を見ると、戸倉上山田温泉はやはり沢山の面白い隅がありますね。お越しになる機会があれば、このギャラリーを是非、ご覧になってください。
Local TV station ABN featured Togura Kamiyamada Onsen on their latest Saturday morning variety show. The show was about special guest Sanshiro-san and the lady announcer coming to our onsen town and taking pictures of the "Showa Retro" scenes. their pictures will be on display at a temporary gallery set up in an empty store front on Kamiyamada Onsen's main street.
Seeing our onsen town through Sanshiro's eyes makes one realize how many interesting nooks and crannies our town has. And it's great that an empty store is getting utilized like this, even if it's only for a temporary time. ABN's gallery will be open to the public until the end of June. If you're in the area, I highly suggesting stopping by for a look.

今年の「牛に引かれて善光寺」のウォーキングが無事に終わりました。雨の中で３０km歩いた３００人の皆様、大変ご苦労様でした。本来ならば私も歩きたかったが、今年は役員だった為にそれぞれのチェックポイントを回ったりして精一杯でした。来年は実行委員長なので今年は全体の様子を見なければならなかった。
今まで三回に完走しました。全部を歩くと体が疲れますが、頭は特に使わなくてすむ。千曲川や周辺の山の景色をゆっくり見ながら、楽しく過ごせるわけです。役員になると、回りの景色はともかく、チェックポイントの準備確認、歩きのペースの調整などなど。
今年は２８回目、来年は２９回目と言う事で、歴史が付いてきたイベントです。これだけなスケールのイベントを継続するのは大変：旅館組合や商工会の青年部を始め、観光協会や市役所、信濃毎日新聞社及び広告会社の手伝いの皆が丸一日を犠牲した。そのお蔭で、戸倉上山田温泉のPR,そして３００人分の良い思いでつくりが出来ました。
継続するだけで大変ですが、ゼロから始まる事を考えれば、全然楽でしょう。その分で、「例年通り」や「最低限だけ」のくせにならないように、来年は実行委員長として今年の見習いの経験、そして皆様の２８年間の経験を生かして、更に良いイベントにもって行きたいと思っております。宜しくお願い致します。

This year's "Pulled by an Ox to Zenkoji" walking event was a success. Perhaps a tad wet, but a success nonetheless. The 300 people who walked the 30km from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen to Zenkoji got rained on the whole way, but still managed to smile at the end.
The past 3 years, I walked with the group. This year, however, I was an understudy to the organizer, preparing for next year when I will be the top person. The times I walked, it was physically exhausting. But managing the event, running between check points to make verify the preparations, micromanaging the pace of the walkers, etc. etc. is so much more mentally taxing. At least when you are walking, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the the Chikuma River and the surrounding mountains!
This was the 28th running of the event. One thing I realized was how much work goes into continuing this sort of event. But when you think about how much more work would be needed to initiate it, I am thankful for all the effort of all the people who have made the event happen up until now. As top organizer next year, it is my hope to add my touch to this great event.

戸倉上山田温泉の裏の城山に１つな大きい建物があります。夜はその建物が派手でライトアップするし、温泉のトレードマークネオン（"戸"+"倉"+"上"+"山"+"田"＋温泉マーク）の温泉マークの近くですから、お客さんに”あれは温泉ですか？”と良く聞かれます。いいえ、温泉じゃなくて、お寺さんです。善光寺別院です。
長野市の善光寺は５月３１日まで七年に一度の御開帳が行われています。その間、戸倉上山田の善光寺別院も御開帳のお祝いとして、特別な飾りもしていて、お土産用でミニ回向柱も売っています。
お寺さんの建物は４２年前ぐらいに出来、正直って多少さびてきました。しかし、管理しているおじさんとおばさんが明るくて、親切に色々と教えてくれます。眺めも最高です。戸倉上山田温泉の全体を上から見える。お寺の鐘を鳴らせば、音は下まで聞こえちゃう。鐘の上の天井の「竜」も不思議で、どの角度から見ても自分のところを見ているようです。そして、驚くほどでかい提灯もある。寄付者の名前が載っていて、その中で私の名前もどっか載っています。
そして、この善光寺別院の隣に、奥津神社があります。子供を作りたいカップルさんの為の神社なので「オブジェ」は２つが入っています。それ以上は言えません。自分の目で見ていてください。

５月６日の戸倉上山田温泉から善光寺までの３０ｋｍワーキング、「牛に引かれて善光寺参り」の為に、我々若旦那達が笠を準備しました。私が書く事を実践したが、「字が下手だ」と先輩に怒られました。厳しい!慣れればうまく出来るかなと思いましたが。。。

The other junior innkeepers and I got together in preparation for our town's big upcoming event, the 30km walk from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen to Zenkoji Temple in honor of the "Pulled by an Ox to Zenkoji" legend. We made the "kasa" hats for the participants to wear. I tried doing some of the writing, but my "senpai" (elder) wasn't happy with my lack of style. Ouch! Maybe if I keep doing it, I'll get the hang of it?

イースター・エッグ・フェスティバルin戸倉上山田温泉4は今日、行いました。私の企画で千曲国際交流協会の事業になって、4年目になりました。戸倉上山田温泉旅館組合連合会と、今年の新しいスポンサーの戸倉キリスト教会の協力で、子供達は約100人が千曲川沿いの公園で卵探し、卵やウサギのテーマーのゲームを色々と楽しまれました。今年は上山田ホテルの俊樹さんの提供で馬車ライドもありました。そして、戸倉上山田温泉調理師青年部の協力で、ゲームで利用した卵で卵焼きもあった。ケボブ屋さんも又お店を開いてくれて、本当に楽しいイベントでした。国際交流のボランティアーの皆さん、そして、市の国際交流員とAET達、ご苦労様でした。有難うございました！子供は100人の笑顔を得れて、嬉しいです。
Our town's 4th annual Easter Egg Festival was held today along the banks of the Chikuma River in front of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. Approximately 100 kids participated in the egg hunt and other egg and bunny related games. Kamiyamada Hotel's Toshiki-san brought his horses and provided horse buggy rides. Our chef and his buddy volunteered to cook up the eggs used in the games. We had a kebob vendor come, too. I got the inns in town to provide bath passes for the participants as well. It was so much fun for everyone! It was a lot of work being the organizer, but thanks to everyone's help, we managed to get smiling faces on 100 kids -- I'd say it was worth it!

亀清旅館の裏に中央公園があって、毎年のこの時期に桜が満開になる。そして花見で盛り上がる。昨日は上山田神楽保存会の仲間と獅子舞し、その後皆と一杯しました。隣のグループのお兄さんが二胡の演奏してくれた。桜の花に二胡の音楽でいい雰囲気でした。近所の皆が集まって公園で花見をする；こういうために日本に来た。

Behind Kamesei Ryokan is Chuo Park. Every year around this time, it turns into a cherry blossom wonderland, and comes alive with hanami parties. Yesterday I attended one such flower viewing party with the Kamiyamada Okagura group. We performed a lion dance, and then proceeded to kick back and enjoy the cherry blossoms. In the group next to us, a younger guy pulled out a niko, a traditional Chinese stringed instrument, and performed some songs for everybody. The combination of the beautiful flowers and the elegant music was sublime. This was one of those "This is why I came to Japan" deals.

戸倉駅からの送迎の途中で、いつものように戸倉上山田温泉の上の善光寺別院のお寺をついでに案内しました。そうすると、そのお寺もご開帳のために特別な飾りをしているのが分かった。やはり、ここも、七年に一度のご開帳を盛り上がろうとしている。

Often times, I take guests to the temple above our onsen town after picking them up from Togura Station to give them a birds-eye view of our town and the Chikuma River valley. Yesterday when I did so, I saw the temple, a branch of Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City, was decorated up for the big Gokaicho event. Even our temple is getting into the the celebration for this once-every-seven-years event.
