今日はまた東京への宣伝キャラバンでした。戸倉上山田温泉旅館組合連合会の7人と、エージェントや旅行威新聞、鉄道雑誌など、あちらこちらを回って、そしてＭｅｄｉａ関係向きでＴｅａ　Ｐａｒｔｙを開きました。戸倉上山田温泉の新しい観光本を案内して、そして地元の食材の試食会を行いました。亀清旅館のお茶菓子として出す私の前日に焼いた手作りクッキーも。
この日は亀清で日帰りで95歳のおばさんを連れた地元のご家族のお客様が来はって、「タイラーさんは？」と聞いてきたようです。うちの妻は「キャラバンで東京に行っています」と答えたら、娘達が「キャラ何？」と言ったけど、95歳のおばさんは「キャラバンだよ。昔は旅館の皆がそういう宣伝を良くしましたよ」と言ったらしいです。
私の昔の先輩達の宣伝の努力のお陰で戸倉上山田温泉は高い知名度になりました。私の世代こそ、その努力をしなきゃ。

I headed into to Tokyo today for another "Caravan" marketing blitz. Myself and six other ryokan members visited the offices of several travel agents, tourism magazines, even a railroad fan newspaper office. Then we put on a tea party for a group of industry media people. We presented our town's new tourism booklet, and put on a tasting party of local foods, including Kamesei Ryokan's home made oatmeal cookies that we give to our guests as tea sweets. I had baked a batch the night before.
While I was away in Tokyo, we had some guests back at the inn for lunch -- a local family with their 95 year old grandmother. They apparently asked where I was, and my wife told them I was in Tokyo for a caravan. The daughters said, "Cara-what?" But the grandmother said, "A caravan. The ryokan owners used to always go on those to promote the town."
It's thanks to the marketing efforts of the innkeepers from generations ago that Togura Kamiyamada's name recognition is as high as it is. Now it's up to my generation to continue those efforts!

戸倉上山田温泉で十数か所にガイドの看板が新しく設置できました。温泉のお客さんが下駄を入って、カランコロン歩きながらこの看板は案内になります。
実は、場所に寄って以前にも案内の看板があった。しかし、行政が忙しくて作ったので、とってもドライでした。今回はホテル雄山の若旦那、Ｈｉｄｅｏさんが頑張って、デザインしました。よく見ていただけたら、英文もちゃんとある。（どうでも良いけど、私の訳です。）
これで戸倉上山田温泉にお越しになる皆様がより楽しんでいただけると思いますので宜しくお願い致します。

Here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, we have about a dozen new signs. Each one explains a little bit about the local history. Guests of the inns can go for a walk around town in their yukata robes and wooden geta sandals and wander from sign to sign to get a better feel of the town. Each sign has a bit of English explanation, too, thanks to Yours Truly. These are actually the 2nd version of the signs. The first was made by the tourism department at City Hall. They must have been in a hurry or something, because they were dreadfully boring. This time around, one of my fellow innkeepers, Hideo-san from Hotel Yuzan, did the design, so they are much more visually pleasing.
So if you come to Togura Kamiyamada, make sure to go for a walk and read all of the stories about our town on the new signs!

来週に２つな町興しのイベントがありますので紹介したいと思っています。

１．千曲市の蔵の町、稲荷山で「歴史的まちなもの活用」という町並み学習会が３月７日（日）午後１３：３０から行います。長野県塩尻市の木曽平沢地区という伝統的な建造物群保存地区から学ぶとの事です。塩尻市役所の方と建設会社の方の講演です。
場所は稲荷山宿の蔵し館(Tel 026-272-2726)で資料代は２００円です。詳しくは稲荷山町並み委員会の高村会長(090-9666-0852)
私に興味深い内容（地元の稲荷山の事も、町並み保存で頑張っている木曽路も）ですし、私はホストしている会のメンバーです。残念ながら今回は私自身がいけないけど、重要な動きです。

２．戸倉上山田温泉カラコロにぎわい協議会のパワーウォーキング研修会　３月１２日（金）午後１９時から
「温泉」との健康そのものである。温泉の成分は体に良いし、お風呂に入ると体を癒せるし、旅館で落ち着いて地元の旬のものも食べれるし。そこで、超健康的のパワーウォーキングとの連携を目的した研修会が今度の金曜日に行います。ご一緒に温泉とパワーウォーキングの取り組みして見ませんか？

There are two civic improvement-related events coming up next week that I'd like to announce:

1. Chikuma City's Inariyama neighborhood is known for its earthen-walled storehouses. This Sunday 07-March at 1:30pm, there will be a talk by members of the Kiso Valley Hirasawa District Historical Preservation Society on how preserving historical buildings can impact a neighborhood. Feel free to contact me, one of the members of the Inariyama Machinami Committee for info.

2. Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's Kara-Koro civic improvement organization will hold an introductory lesson on Power Walking on Friday 12-March. "Onsen" is intrinsically "healthy", with the minerals in the water, the soothing baths, the relaxing ryokans and gourmet, seasonal food. And Power Walking is massively "healthy". Come explore how the two can be tied together at our town's power walking demonstration. The location is the Chikuma City Tourism Hall here in Kamiyamada Onsen. Again, feel free to contact me for details.

お客様の送迎の帰りで、千曲市森地区の前から気に入った所によりました：観龍寺。信濃の国三十三番札所の第六番だそうで、以前から地元の方に見るべきだとお勧めされました。今日はちょっと時間があったので、行って見ました。森の「杏の里」の谷に地区に入れば、「観龍寺」の看板が出ます。矢印通りに行けば、無事にお寺の手前の駐車場に着きました。途中の道が工事中だから、これから綺麗になるみたいです。駐車場の横に泉から綺麗なお水が出ていて、水の流れの音で良い雰囲気。お寺の前の急な石階段を登って、大きな門を潜って、その素敵な茅葺屋根のお寺が見えました。今はまだ冬だから回りの木は枝だけ；葉っぱが入ればなお綺麗だと思います。あと６週間ぐらいで森の杏の花が咲く予定です；その時にまた期待。
観龍寺の歴史は１３８０年間という想像も付かないような年数です。本当に感動しました。お寺や門の天井の絵も１つ１つ面白いです。お寺の東側の龍の絵も格好いい！さすが観龍寺だ！
千曲市森地区の観龍寺は戸倉上山田温泉から車で約３０分。

On the way back from dropping some guests off in Chikuma City's Mori district, I had some time to spare so I went on a search for Kanryu-ji Temple. I had seen it on maps before, and some recent guests had talked about it, so I was curious as to what the temple was like. After entering Mori, also known as "Apricot Village", signs for Kanryu-ji appeared. I followed the signs up to the temple's parking lot. Next to the lot is a fresh water spring with clean, sparkling water making a captivating gurgling sound. From the parking lot, you climb up a bunch of stone steps, go through the cool wooden "mon" arch, and come upon the thatched roof temple building. Since it's still winter, all the surrounding trees are bare, but I bet when spring comes the forest-like setting is pretty spectacular. I am sure I'll be coming back to Mori in a few weeks to see the apricot blossoms -- I hope to come back to Kanryu-ji then, too. The temple and arch are covered in hand-painted wood tiles, and on the temple's east side is a really cool painting of a dragon. That makes sense since Kanryu-ji's "ryu" means dragon.
Kanryu-ji is #6 on Nagano's 33-Temples tour. It supposedly has a mind-bogginly long 1380 year history. If you're in the area, check it out.

今日はまた晴れて、暖かくなりそうな日です。「春のようですね」と言ったら、地元のおじさんに「だまされない様に。まだ冬だ。その内また寒くなるよ」と言われました。
まあ、千曲市観光協会の「春」歳時記が出ましたので戸倉上山田の春の花や祭り情報をお知らせしたいと思います。

節分草　（戸倉駅の上の天狗公園）　３月中旬～下旬
可愛いらしい小さな白い花の真中に黄色と紫のカラフルな部分があって、うんと綺麗です。この珍しい花は写真家に人気あります。戸倉節分草を育てる会が一所懸命守っていますので年々に見に来る方が増えています。

森「杏の里」のあんず祭　４月２日～１６日
今年で５５回目になる千曲市の大イベントです。杏の花の薄いピンクに、農村の落ち着いた雰囲気の合わせがポイントです。戸倉駅の上に登る道が秘密の近道です。

イースターフェスティバルin戸倉上イやまだ温泉　４月３日
千曲国際交流協会の提供で、子供達の為のイベントです。千曲川沿いの噴水公園の周辺でお菓子入りのプラスチック玉子が隠されて、子供たちががーっと探すと言う遊びです。他のゲームもあります。これはまた、実行委員長が私です。詳しくは私まで@亀清でお電話をどうぞ。

上山田の知識寺の春祭り　４月１７日（土）
地元のお寺さんの地元の、伝統的な式。我々上山田神楽保存会の獅子舞も！

戸倉の水上布奈山神社　御柱際　４月１８日（日）
諏訪の御柱際がもちろん、一番ですが、戸倉の御柱際も感動的です。神社は国重要文化財です。詳しくはTel(026)823-5135.

牛に引かれて善光寺詣り　５月５日（水）
戸倉上山田温泉から善光寺まで、３０ｋｍを歩くイベントです。ちなみに、今年の実行委員長は私です。どうぞ、多くの皆様のご参加をお待ちしております！

科野のムラお田植えまつり　６月１３日（日）
千曲市森地区にある長野県立歴史資料館の隣の縄文時代の村に田んぼが設置してあって、古米などの田植えは手作業で、皆は参加が出来ます。今年はうちの子供たちを連れて行って、チャレンジしたいと思っています！

Springtime Flower and Event Info for Togura Kamiyamada Onsen Area

Setsubunsou Flowers (Togura Tengu Park) Mid to Late March
The cutest little white wildflowers, with pretty yellow and purple centers, bloom in a section of the hillside next to Tengu Park above Togura Station. They bloom after the snow cover melts, and attract many an avid photographer.
10 minutes by car from Kamesei Ryokan, 10 minutes on foot from Togura Station.

Apricot Blossoms, Mori "Apricot Vilage" Early to Mid April
This year's Apricot Blossom Festival will be held from April 2nd to the 16th in quaint, rural Mori. One of Chikuma City's signature events. The delicate light pink color of the apricot blossoms are spread out among the farmhouses in this rural valley.
25 minutes by car from Kamesei / Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, or 10 minutes by shuttle bus from Yashiro Station.

Easter Festival in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, 4/03
Me and some fellow foreigners share our culture with the local children, with a huge, 1000-egg Easter egg hunt at the Fountain Park along the Chikuma River here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. Egg-related games and free horse buggy rides.

Chishiki-ji Temple's Spring Festival 4/17
A decidedly local traditional festival at a decidedly local temple. Absolutely 100% not touristy. Which makes it absolutetly 100% interesting for tourists from overseas, because it is a glimpse at local culture in rural Japan. I'll be there playing my flute with my fellow members of the Kamiyamada Lion Dance group.
5 minutes by car from Kamesei / Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, or 15 minutes on foot.

Togura's Mizukami Funayama Shrine's Onbashira 4/18
The big once-every-seven-years Onbashira will take place this year in Suwa. Branch shrines throughout the area have their own local versions, including this shrine near Togura Station. A massive log will be moved from a nearby mountain and set up at the shrine at a special ceremony. This festival, also, is meant for locals as opposed to tourists, which makes it that much more meaningful for outsiders to experience.
The shrine is a 10 minute walk from Togura Station, or 15 minutes from Kamesei Ryokan.

Pulled By an Ox to Zenkoji Walk 5/05
Togura Kamiiyamada Onsen's annual 30km walk to Zenkoji Temple, in honor of the legend of an old lady following an ox to the temple. This year, it's my turn to be the head organizer. So if you have any suggestions for improvements, feel free to let me know!

Rice Planting at Shinano Village, Mori 6/13
Next to the Prefectural History Museum is a recreated prehistoric village, complete with rice paddies. Every year, an event is held with young ladies dressed in period costumes hand-planting the rice seedlings to the accompaniement of taiko drums. One field is open for anyone to try their hand at wading into the mud and doing "ta-ue" rice planting. It's a great opportunity to experience ta-ue, as well as gain a new appreciation for rice.
The history museum is 25 minutes by car from Kamesei / Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, or 15 minutes on foot from Yashiro Station.

戸倉上山田温泉の周辺の地酒は姨捨正宗です。私は個人で何度も見学させて頂いております。歴史のある、味のある蔵です。もう、大好きです。（もちろん、造っているお酒も好きですし・・・）　普段は一般公開されていませんが、２０１０年３月１３日（土）は特別で「蔵開放」のイベントです。１０時、１１時、１３時、１４時、１５時からという５回のツアーが行う予定です。そして、蔵でしか味わえない「絞りたて」もあるそうです。善光寺街道沿いの立派な土壁の蔵で、全国的に評価、受賞されたお酒、この特別なイベントで是非、ご一緒に行きましょう！

姨捨正宗の酒蔵は戸倉上山田温泉から車で県道７７号を走って、稲荷山で国道４０３号に左折して約３．５ｋｍを登って左側にあります。１５分ぐらいかかります。又は科野鉄道屋代駅からバス#６,２５分。

Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's area sake brewery is Obasute Masamune. Using rice grown in the legendary moon reflecting rice fields of Obasute Mountain, and clear water from a local spring, Obasute Masamune's sake is recognized nation-wide and has won numerous awards. The historical brewery buildings, located on the Edo-era Zenkoji Kaido (the old path between Matsumoto and Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City), are full of character with impressive earthen walls and traditional construction.
I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to tour the brewery before, but normally it is not open to the public. However, on Saturday March 13th 2010, Obasute Masamune will hold a special "Open Brewery" day so the public can tour the facilities. Tours will start at 10 and 11am and 1, 2 and 3pm.
Come and join me for a tour of this historical sake brewery -- it's a unique opportunity to see the traditional buildings and the inner workings.

From Togura Kamiyamada Onsen by car, take Prefectural Road #77 north to Route 403 and turn left. Climb for approx. 3.5km and the brewery will be on the left. Or take bus #6 from Yashiro Station on the Shinano Railway line, approx. 25 min.

夕べは戸倉上山田温泉の「カラコロ足湯」のお掃除当番でした。町の皆でお掃除して、町の皆で利用して、戸倉上山田温泉にお越しになるお客様の皆で楽しんでいただいて・・・この足湯が出来て良かったと思います。尚且つ、冬の間は我々旅館若旦那の飾りつけたイルミネーションでなお綺麗です。

戸倉上山田温泉にお越しになる際、どうぞ、カラコロ足湯に入ってみて下さい。気持ち良いですよ！そして、私たち町の皆の手で綺麗になっているよ！

Last night it was my turn to clean the Kara-Koro footbath here in the center of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen.
We townfolk keep the footbath clean, as well as use it, and visitors to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen enjoy it also. And during the winter time, it is lit up by this pretty illumination, put up by yours truly and the rest of the junior innkeepers.
So, if you come to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, be sure to soak your feet in the Kara-Koro footbath. It feels great! And is nice and clean, thanks to us townfolk.

それぞれの温泉地のこういう建物は多くないですか？団体旅行のピークに出来たホテル。つまり、マスツーリスムに頼って、バスが来なくなって、個人化された日本の旅行文化を追いつけなくて、結局お化けホテルになってしまう。壊すのにお金がかかるし、永遠にそのまま残るってやつ。
この戸倉上山田温泉の一番目立つ所に「信州観光ホテル」の跡がずっとそのままで。温泉の恥のままで。今日は久しぶりに通ったら、壊す作業が始まったように見えたり聞こえたりしました。こうやって見れば、でかいホテルだったよね。ボーリング場まであって、作った人はきっと大きい夢があっただろうね。でも、今は幽霊しかいなさそう。幽霊しか喜ばないマスツーリスムの記念館（？）がやっと消えるでしょうか？さようなら。
Most onsen towns in Japan have a building (or buildings!) like this -- a hotel built during the peak of the group tourism decades. Japan's travel culture has since evolved, from "mass tourism" with busload after busload of tourists, to a more modern, individualistic type of travel. Since the buses disappeared, these types of hotels couldn't keep up with the changing times and inevitably went bankrupt. Demolishing costs are prohibitive, so the building turns into a ghost hotel.
This particular shrine to mass tourisim is Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's old "Shinshu Kanko (Tourist) Hotel". I walked by it today and was happy to hear the sounds of heavy machinery. Perhaps someone has finally started to demolish this behemoth. Somebody obviously had big dreams at one point -- there's even a bowling alley. But now it looks like this blemish on our townscape will finally be removed. Sayonara!

今回の満月が特に綺麗なので、戸倉上山田の温泉街はと月様の光でどんな感じかなと思って、お客さんを連れて町の裏の城山に連れて行きました。坂を上る価値がありました！善光寺別院のお寺からの眺めが最高でした。温泉のネオン街やそれぞれの旅館、真ん中は千曲川が流れて、お月様の光で川の向こう側の五里ヶ峰のシルエット、とにかく素敵でした。
姨捨からの善光寺平の夜景も綺麗ですが、城山から見る戸倉上山田温泉の夜景も真下のようで、また感動的です。戸倉上山田温泉にお泊りになれば、城山も上ってみて下さい。

With this month's full moon being so pretty, I wanted to see what our onsen town of Togura Kamiyamada looked like from above. So I took a couple of guests and drove up to the Zenkoji Branch Temple on Jyo-Yama, the hill behind our town. With the neon light district, the lights of the ryokan buildings, the Chikuma River running through the middle, and the hills on the far side silhouted by the moonlight, it was a spectacular scene.

魚籠にブルースブラザーズ。足袋ソックスに古品の車。様々な商品を扱っている面白いお土産さん「民芸品・ひょうたんや」が戸倉上山田温泉の本通の中心にあります。中央ホテルの角にありまして、道からも入れるし宿のロビーにもつながっています。女将さんの趣味の物がそろっているそうです。
インドネシアからのお客さんが気に入っていたの出、その若旦那（＝私の先輩）に連絡して、連れて行きました。実は私も前から気になっていたけど、今回は始めて入りました。色々な楽しい商品が並んでいて、面白かった。結局、インドネシアの二人はひな祭りのタペストリーと杏姫のスイーツを買いました。
とにかく、本当に様々な商品を扱っているお店なので、戸倉上山田の温泉街をぶるぶるするついでに、行ってみてください。きっと、気に入る物を見付けると思います！

Traditional "biku" woven baskets along sides a Blues Brothers statue. Ninja-like "tabi" socks and antique toy trucks. Souvenir shop "Hyotanya" has one of the most eclectic collections of items you'll say anywhere. The shop is on Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's main street, adjacent to the Chuo Hotel ryokan.
A couple of our guests from Indonesia wanted to see inside the shop, so I called my buddy who works there and took our guests over. They ended up buying a Girls Day wall hanging and some Anzu-Hime apricot sweets. I had been curious about Hyotanya from before, but this was the first time for me to actually see the inside. It's certainly a cute little shop, so when going for a walk around the onsen, I highly suggest stopping in and browsing. You're likely to find something in the mix that interests you!
