無事だとは言えないけれども、牛に引かれて善光寺2010年と言う30ｋｍのウォーキングイベントは昨日、終わりました。今年の実行委員長は我々戸倉上山田温泉旅館青年部の当番で、私でした。去年は一日雨だったが、今年は天気が晴れていました。但し、暑かった。温度は３０℃まで上がったそうです。参加した313人はかわいそうでした。一人のおじさんは水分不足で救急車で病院に運ばれた。結局は軽い現象だったのでその後は家に戻られました。そして、先週に書きましたが、今年のイベントの看板動物、里子ちゃんと言う牛がデビューで出る予定でした。練習もしました。しかし、イベントの直前に長野県の保険所から連絡が来まして、先月に宮崎県で牛の病気が出た；危ないですから牛の参加を自粛する様にと。遠い九州から、尚且つ人間に移らない病気、なお尚且つ「止めて」と言わないで「自粛」と言う逃げ道の言い方で・・・　結局は参加者の安全を選んだ。そのお陰で、テレビや新聞の皆は「牛に引かずに善光寺」で大騒ぎ。
まあ、思い出の牛2010年でした。参加者の皆さん、ご苦労様でした。そしてスタッフの皆さん、有難うございました！

Well, the 2010 Zenkoji Walk went as scheduled yesterday, and wasn't exactly uneventful. This is our town's major event of 300+ participants and 70+ staff for the 30km walk from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen to Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City in honor of the "Pulled by an Ox to Zenkoji" legend. And this year's organizing committee chaiperson was -- me! (Us ryokan junior leaders take turns being the chief organizer, and this year was my turn.)
Last year, it rained during the entire walk. This year, it was sunny, but way too hot -- 30 deg C. One elderly man collapsed due to the heat and had to be taken to a hospital by ambulance. (Luckily nothing serious -- he went home later in the afternoon.) And then there was the problem with Satoko-chan, the cow that was going to lead our parade. Last week I wrote about how I went to meet Satoko-chan and go for a practice walk with her. Well, Nagano Prefecture's Health and Welfare contacted us right before the event. A cow disease had broken out in Miyazaki Prefecture last month, and they wanted us to "reconsider" bringing a cow into the crowds of people for our event. Not only is Miyazaki hundreds of miles away and on another island, but the disease isn't spreadable to humans! And to top it off, they didn't have the balls to order us to cancel the cow, all they would say is to "reconsider", making the cancelation our responsibility. In the end, we had Satoko-chan stay home to avoid any possible problems, and the TV stations and newspaper had a field day with our "Not being pulled by an Ox to Zenkoji". At least that meant a few extra minutes of media exposure for our town...
Anyways, I want to take this time to congratulate all the people who walked the 30km from Togura Kamiyamada to Zenkoji, as well as to thank all of the staff!

戸倉上山田温泉の隣の坂城町に「鉄の展示館」があり、今の展示会は「人間国宝宮入行平とその高弟子たち」です。本人が生きていたころ我が旅館にも書を書いて下さりました。廊下に飾ってあります。
今回の展示会に宮入さんの息子さんが「刀匠と手づくりナイフを作ろう！」という体験を提供してくれます。去年は私達家族で体験しましたので非常に面白かった。機会があれば行っていて下さい。そして、終わったら、亀清旅館に飾ってある行平氏の作品もご覧になっておいでやす！

上山田文化会館は今年、30歳になります。今日はこの文化会館にお世話になっている数団体が大掃除しました。私が上山田神楽保存会のメンバーと一緒に手伝いました。うちの子供たちも引っ張っていきました。そしたら、掃除もあったようですが、旗作りで盛り上がっていました。掌にペンキを塗って、旗に押し付けると言う楽しい作業になりました。

5月8日まで30周年の誕生日際と言う事で文化会館のロビーで今まで開催されたコンサートや演劇のポースターなどが展示してあります。そして5月5日に無料コンサートも予定してあるそうです。私はその日に「牛に引かれて善光寺」のイベントの参加で出かけちゃうけど、興味のある方は観光会館に詳しくをお問合せください。Tel(026)275-0500.

This year, our town's Cultural Hall will celebrate its 30th birthday. Today, all the various groups that use the hall volunteered to do a major spring cleaning. After our guests checked out, I took our kids to participate along with the other member of the Kamiyamada Okagura lion dance group. By the time we got there, the hard work was over and everyone was having fun decorating some flags with handprints. Of course, our kids enjoyed that!

In celebration of its 30th anniversary, the Kamiyamada Culture Hall is holding a display of posters and announcements of concerts and plays of the last 30 years in its lobby. And on May 5th at 1:30pm there will be a free concert. 5月5日に行う予定の「牛に引かれて善光寺」の戸倉上山田温泉から３０ｋｍウォーキングのイベントの準備が進んでいます。昨日は他の旅館若旦那達と一緒に笠作りをやり、今日は今年の牛、里子ちゃんと会ってきました。里子ちゃんは引っ張る役として始めてだそうで、散歩の練習を致しました。名前が可愛いけど、本人（本牛？）がでかくて、角も大きくて吃驚しました。里子ちゃんだったら、300人を善光寺まで引っ張る力がずいぶんありそう。安心しました。
その後、版画家の森獏郎の工房に顔を出して、打ち合わせしました。と言うのは、その年の実行委員長は仮装を一番頑張る参加者に特別なプレゼントを与える。今年は私がその実行委員長なので、森さんの「牛に引かれて」の作品を選んだ。
当日は段々と近付いていますので楽しみにしています！

７年に一度の御柱際に参加してきました。諏訪で丸太を乗ってきたのではなくて、この戸倉上山田温泉の佐良志奈神社の地元の祭。若宮地区から木やりを歌いながら、御柱を引っ張りました。諏訪の方は本番なので観光客が全国から（全世界から！）その迫力のある祭を見に来る。しかし、あまりにも人が多くて、結局あまりよく見れないと言う節もあります。この地元の神社の御柱際は観光客向きではなくて、地元の方の為です。その分で、地元の方は実際に御柱を引っ張れるので、それなりに楽しい。
私達はその地区に住んでいる知り合いに声をかけてもらって、参加する事ができました。次男を連れて、二人で地区の皆様と小野柱の繋いでいる紐を引っ張って、住宅街を通って、所々に家の方が待っていて、お酒やりんごジュース、柿ピーや苺を出してくれて、皆さんと仲間になって、とっても良かった。親子で良い思い出になった。
今度は18日に、千曲川の向こう側の水上布奈山神社の御柱際の予定です。長野県のあちらこちらでそれぞれの地元の御柱際が諏訪の本番の祭にあわせてやっています。機会があれば、ぜひ参加してみて下さい。

I got to participate in Onbashira. Not THE Onbashira festival in Suwa, the once-every-seven years event that draws people from all over the country, as well as all over the world. (I'd love the chance, though, to ride one of the logs down the hill in their signature event). The Onbashira festival that I got to participate in was put on by our local Sarashina Shrine here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. The festival in Suwa is much more intense, but with so many people, it's hard to see the action sometimes. On the other hand, this local festival was just for the locals, and was much more hands-on.
A friend of mine who lives in the Wakamiya district invited me to participate, so our son Kenny and I went to check it out. We took our place at the rope to pull the log, and dragged it through the neighborhood, stopping at some of the houses to partake in the sake and apple juice, crackers and strawberries that the people living there were offering us. Kenny and I enjoyed joining the people of the neighborhood and participating in this traditional festival.
Next weekend, the 18th of April, will be the Onbashira festival at Mizukamifunayama Shrine on the other side of the Chikuma River. In fact, all throughout Nagano, various local shrines will be having their own mini versions of the huge Onbashira festival in Suwa. If you get a chance, check it out!

毎年、「牛に引かれて善光寺」の伝説の記念で、この戸倉上山田温泉から善光寺までの３０ｋｍウォーキングのイベントが行います。参加者３００人の大イベントです。今年で２９回目です。５月５日（水）に行う予定。
そして、今年の実行委員長はなんと、私になりました。
ハロウィーンやイースター、そして一昨年に開いた長野インバウンドサミット、スタッフを入れて１５０人のイベントは何回も実行委員長としてやった事があるけど、正直って、こういう公式的なイベント管理は苦手です。準備が細かくて、もうフラフラです。まあ、何とか成功させないと・・・
昨日は挨拶参りデ、前項ジサンや三箇所の警察所、千曲市や長野市の市役所などなど。

Every year, our town puts on a 30km walking event from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen to Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City, in honor of the "Pulled by an Ox to Zenkoji" legend. This year marks the 29th time, and will take place on Wednesday May 5th, the last day of the Golden Week holiday.
This year, the organizing chairperson is none other than --- Me! Up until now, I have managed 4 Halloweens, 5 Easters, and 1 Nagano Inbound Summit, all of which were 150+ people events including staff. But this Zenkoji Walk preparation is getting to me. All of the official paperwork is so insanely detailed! Somehow I have to get through it, though!
Yesterday, my fellow organizers and I made the rounds to Zenkoji, several police stations, the city halls of both Nagano and Chikuma, and several other places. What a job!

今日はイースターエッグフェスティバルin戸倉上山田温泉が行いました。今年が5年目なので地域の子供たちが段々となじんできました様です。千曲国際交流の皆様、ご苦労様でした！そして、お風呂を提供してくれた戸倉上山田温泉旅館組合のメンバー、玉子を提供してくれた岡田商店、その玉子を調理してくれた調理師会青年部、馬車（！）を提供してくれた上山田ホテルの俊樹さん、ケバブ屋台を出してくれたニコライさん、協力してくれた戸倉上山田商工会と戸倉クリスト協会、皆様のお陰で100人のお子さんの笑顔で大成功でした！実行委員長として、嬉しかった！

The 5th annual Easter Egg Festival in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen took place today in the park along the shores of the Chikuma River. Thanks to the volunteer efforts of the Chikuma Int'l Exchange Assoc., the onsen baths provided by several of the ryokans, the eggs from Okada Shoten, the cooking of same eggs by the Junior Chefs, the horse buggy rides by Toshiki-san from Kamiyamada Hotel, the kebab van provided by my buddy Nicholai, and cooperation from the Togura Kamiyamada Business Association and Togura Christ Church, we had 100 smiling kids. As organizing chairperson, I was thrilled!

風林火山で有名な川中島古戦場は隣の長野市にあるけど、この千曲市に関連している場所があります。謙信が夜中で、妻女山から降りて千曲川を渡った所が雨ノ宮です。（詳しい人はそれだけの説明で分かってくれると思いますが・・・）

昨日はうちの子供たちと雨ノ宮に寄ってみました。何も無いと前に注意されましたが、インパクトのある文書と、分かりやすい地図があって、とっても良かったですよ。風林火山に興味のある方、是非、寄ってみて下さい。

戸倉上山田は温泉がなかったら、どうなるだろう。亀清旅館はいくら伝統的な旅館雰囲気を出しても、板長はお料理を一生懸命頑張っても、私達は精一杯おもてなししても、温泉がなければお客さんは来てくれるのかな？やはり、温泉が私達の命です。それを守っているのは上山田温泉会社です。源泉14件を利用して、我々旅館に皆さんが目指している温泉のお湯を提供してくれています。
今日はその1つな源泉の水中ポンプの取替え工事が行われました。温泉会社の誘いで、特別に現場を見学させて頂きました。とにかく、偉い工事でした。物凄くでかいクレーンで源泉の小屋の屋根を通して、古いポンプを引っ張り出しました。深さ約400ｍの井戸でポンプの深さは約40ｍだそうです。
とってもいい勉強になりました。実は、亀清旅館も温泉の源泉を持っています。しかし、その水中ポンプは中に落ちているそうです。井戸の上に建物が建てられています。従って、引っ張り出そうと思えば、このようにクレーンが必要となる。

What if Togura-Kamiyamada didn't have a hot spring? What if we at Kamesei Ryokan tried our hardest to provide as traditional of a ryokan experience, and our chef put out the best possible kaiseki meals, and we gave our guests the highest quality service, but we didn't have an onsen bath -- would guests come? The hot spring mineral waters are our lifeline! Fortunately we have the Kamiyamada Onsen Company managing their 14 onsen wells and delivering the mineral water to all of us onsens with professional reliability, so our guests can enjoy soaking in the onsen baths.
Today, the Onsen Company had to replace the pump for one of the onsen wells. They invited me to watch the work be done. It was a special arrangement -- no other ryokan people were invited. They know I am particularly interested in such things. I was amazed at how big the operation was. They had to have a huge crane raise the pump using a hole in the roof of the pump house. This was very useful for me to see, because we have a similar onsen well here at Kamesei, but ours has a building built on top of it. And our pump has supposedly fallen down into the well. So to retrieve it, we would have to do some similar crane action.
Anyways, I want to thank Takai-san for his special invitation to watch the onsen action!

今年のイースターエッグフェスティバルin戸倉上山田温泉のチラシのＨＰが出来ありました。イベント実態は4月3日（土）午前10時半からです。温泉の千曲川沿いの噴水公園で行い、公園でお菓子入りの玉子を隠して、子供たちがガーっと探すと言う楽しいイベントです。他には玉子のゲームたっぷり。割った玉子は亀清の板長を含めて、調理師会の青年部たちがオムレツを作ってくれる。馬車乗りも、ケバッブ屋さんも、色々と盛り上がります。最後はそれぞれの旅館がお風呂を提供してくれるのでイースターの遊びが終わったら、温泉へどうぞ。今年こそは私が実行委員長なので宜しくお願い致します。
This year's Easter Egg Festival in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen will be on Saturday April 3rd. The brochure and website are made, and the Chikuma Int'l Cultural Exchange Assoc. and I are busy with the preparations. (Yours Truly is once again the organizing chairperson.) After the huge, 1000-egg hunt we'll have lots of other egg games. And the eggs that get broken will be scrambled up and made into omelets by Kamesei's and other inns' chefs. There will be horse and buggy rides as well as a kebab van, and following the festivities, the guests are invited to take baths using free tickets provided by the town's ryokans. Come and enjoy the fun!
