千曲市のタクシー会社らが一生懸命に語り部タクシーのツアーをPRしています。地元の運転士さんが地元の歴史、伝説のお話しをしながら、千曲市の見所を回る「千曲市観光名所めぐり語り部タクシー」

千曲市巡りモデルコースは４つ：
＊姨捨の「田毎の月」棚田と土壁蔵と伝統建物１２０軒が残る稲荷山地区
＊1600年の歴史のある森将軍塚と日本一のあんずの里
＊NHK大河ドラマロケ地「荒砥城」と重文「智識寺」
＊姨捨棚田・長楽寺、味噌蔵、漬物店巡り

それぞれのコースは約2時間；タクシー1台貸し切り料金が13000円。4人の場合は一人3250円。

自分でマイカーで巡り手もあるが、
運転はお任せ、尚且つ地元でしか分からないうんちくのお話を聞けて、なかなか良い企画だと思う。

これからは千曲市以外な行先：小布施、安曇野、戸隠、稲荷山・高橋まゆみ人形館、須坂、上田・真田などのコースも開発する予定だそうです。戸倉上山田温泉がちょうど中心的な位置なので、ここから信州を冒険・探検しょう！

Have you ever wanted to explore a new town, but didn't have a way of getting around and wanted the inside knowledge of a local? Well, Chikuma City's taxi companies have just the thing: Story-telling Taxi Tours.

The 2 hour tours cost 13,000 yen which, split by 4 people, is only 3,250 yen a person. Four model courses cover the city's main tourist spots:

*Moon-reflecting Obasute terraced rice fields + Inariyama neighborhood with its 120 historical buildings and earthen walled storehouses
*Mori's 1600-year old tomb and Japan's largest apricot growing area
*Arato-jo Fortress (used by NHK for their historical dramas) and Chishiki-ji Temple, listed on the national historical registry
*Obasute's Choraku-ji Temple + Miso maker + Picles maker tour.

More tours are in the works to outlying destinations, such as Togakushi, the Jigokudani snow monkey park, Matsumoto Castle, etc.

Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is central to Nagano's many tourist spots, and a story-telling taxi tour is a great way to take it all in!

(NOTE: Story-telling is in Japanese so an understanding of some 'nihongo' would be necessary to fully appreciate these tours.)

私も手伝って戸倉上山田温泉旅館青年部が飾った冬のイルミネーションはいつも綺麗ですが、雪景色になるとなお綺麗。

この頃は雪が少し降っていて、道は大丈夫ですが公園で残っています。イルミネーションと合わせて、幻景色。

The Togura Kamiyamada Onsen ryokan junior association members (including myself) decorated our onsen town's main park with illumination for the winter. The recent snowfall gives the lights an even more beautiful touch.

今日はネットエージェントじゃらん社の長野県のマネージャーとこの戸倉上山田の担当が亀清に来てくれて、私ともう一人の旅館青年部メンバーと打ち合わせしました。来月は私が青年部長として行われている研修・地域連携「温泉塾」という企画の一部として研修会をやる予定です。その下準備は今日、やりました。

それぞれの宿のプランつくりの事及び戸倉上山田温泉全体の特性の勉強になるので、楽しみにしています。

戸倉上山田の温泉画街から裏の城山の天辺に木造の櫓が見える：　荒砥城の見晴らし台です。1995年に復元されたこの山城は戦国時代を表現する。

松本城や姫路城は「日本のお城だ！」というイメージがあるかもしれないけど、ああいう平地城は戦国時代の後半もしくは江戸時代の方からのが多い。戦国時代の最中には下から上に何があるか分からないような作りのこういう山城の方が多かった。松本城の様な平地のお城は殿様の力を示す目的があった；荒砥城の様な山城は単純に戦争の為であった。

戦争やら火事やら、もしくは単純の浸食で戦国時代の山城の全部は無くなりました。唯一元の形として存在しているのはこの荒砥城です。従って、荒砥城は太河ドラマのロケ地として使われています。

今回はお客さんに頼まれて、荒砥城を案内しました。冬に登ったのは初めてだったかもしれない；
いつも格好良い荒砥城は雪景色でなお良い絵になっています、
上から見る千曲川と周辺の山々は白くなっていて、なお綺麗でした。

お客さんは「そのころの侍は冬をどうやって越したか」とか、「その時代に一日だけでもいいから戻ってみたい」とかで話が盛り上がりました。

荒砥城はいつもお客さんに紹介しますが、自分も時々行けて良いね。

From down in our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada, you can see a wooden lookout tower at the top of Jo-Yama, the hill behind our town. The tower belongs to Arato-jo, a mountain fortress. The compound was rebuilt to match its presumed original configuration in 1995.

Most people typically picture a lowland castle like Matsumoto's or Himeji's when they think of a 'Japanese castle'. Those are more projections of the local lord's power than actual defensive battlements. They date back to the end of the Warring States as well as Edo eras.

During the Warring States era, however, thousands of fortresses like Arato-Jo were constructed on hilltops throughout the country. They were designed strictly for military purposes, with the majority of their structures built low to the ground so as not to be visible from down below.

All of these mountain fortresses have since disappeared, destroyed by fires, battles or simple erosion. Arato-jo is hence the only such fortress existing in a resemblance of it's original shape, and is often used as the backdrop for historical TV shows.

I took a couple of guests up to Arato-jo for a tour. This was my first time to go in the middle of winter. With a touch of snow, the fortress has an even more foreboding feel to it. The view from the top, with the Chikuma River valley below and the surrounding mountains in their winter state, had a surreal feel to it.

The guests and I wondered how it must have been like for the samurai posted here in the winter. One whistfully fantasized about returning to that era and experiencing how it would've been like to live a samurai's life for a day.

Down here at Kamesei, our guests often follow our recommendation and drive or walk up to see Arato-jo. This time I was fortunate to see the fort with my own eyes, in its harsh winter guise.

節分が近付いているとの事！

皆さんの町で豆撒きはどこでなされているか分かりませんが、この戸倉上山田温泉では温泉街の上の善光寺別院のお寺さんで行われています。

戸倉上山田温泉の豆撒き及び冬・早春のイベントを紹介します；

節分（豆撒き）＠善光寺大本願別院　2月3日（金）
年男や芸子さん、政治家がお寺の裏の駐車場で豆をまきます。（亀清旅館から歩いて25分）

灯明祭（ライトアップ）　＠善光寺・長野市　2月11-19日
善光寺は五輪の色でライトアップされ、参道が行燈通りになる。（亀清から車で約60分；電車は戸倉―長野駅間25分）

節分草（花）　＠戸倉駅の上の天狗公園　３月中旬～下旬
可愛いらしい小さな白い花の真中に黄色と紫のカラフルな部分があって、うんと綺麗です。この珍しい花は写真家に人気あります。戸倉節分草を育てる会が一所懸命守っていますので年々に見に来る方が増えています。
（亀清旅館から車で約１０分。戸倉駅から歩いて約１０分）

森「杏の里」のあんず祭　４月３日～１５日
今年で５７回目になる千曲市の大イベントです。杏の花の薄いピンクに、農村の落ち着いた雰囲気の合わせがポイントです。戸倉駅の上に登る道が秘密の近道です。
（亀清旅館から車で約２５分。屋代駅からシャットルバスで１０分。）

イースターフェスティバルin戸倉上イやまだ温泉　４月７日（予定）
千曲国際交流協会の提供で、子供達の為のイベントです。千曲川沿いの噴水公園の周辺でお菓子入りのプラスチック玉子が隠されて、子供たちがガーっと探すと言う遊びです。他のゲームもあります。馬車も来る予定です！これはまた、実行委員長が私です。詳しくは私まで@亀清でお電話をどうぞ。

上山田の知識寺の春祭り　４月１７日（火）
地元のお寺さんの地元の、伝統的な式。お寺は茅葺屋根との歴史的な建物で、この儀式こそ昔からです。
我々上山田神楽保存会の獅子舞も！

Grocery stores throughout the country are prominently displaying beans for sale.

Beans packaged with 'oni' goblin masks.

'Tis tims for Setsubun, the 'season-between-the-seasons', or the day in between the winter solstice and spring equinox. What this entails is a bean-throwing ceremony where people shout 'Oni wa soto, Fuku wa uchi' which basically means "Bad luck out, good luck in".

Households as well as communities around the country hold such ceremonies. Here in our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada, the temple at the top of the hill behind town, the Zenkoji Branch Temple, holds our area's biggest bean throwing. All the men of an age a multiple of 12, as well as some of the geisha and a few politicians stand on the balcony and throw beans mixed with prizes to the people gathered below.

Setsubun @ Zenkoji Branch Temple, Feb. 3 (Fri.)
Flying beans and presents. Temple is a 25 min. walk up the hill behind Kamesei Ryokan.

Tomyo Festival @ Zenkoji (Nagano City) Feb. 11-19
Nagano City's venerable Zenkoji Temple lit up in the Olympic colors. The cobblestone street main approach is also decorated with hundreds of andon lanterns.
From Kamesei by car 60 minutes, or by train 25 min. from Togura Station to Nagano Station.

Setsubunsou Flowers (Togura Tengu Park) Mid to Late March
The cutest little white wildflowers, with pretty yellow and purple centers, bloom in a section of the hillside next to Tengu Park above Togura Station. They bloom after the snow cover melts, and attract many an avid photographer.
10 minutes by car from Kamesei Ryokan, 10 minutes on foot from Togura Station.

Apricot Blossoms, Mori "Apricot Vilage" Early to Mid April
This year's Apricot Blossom Festival will be held from April 3rd to the 15th in quaint, rural Mori. One of Chikuma City's signature events. The delicate light pink color of the apricot blossoms are spread out among the farmhouses in this rural valley.
25 minutes by car from Kamesei / Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, or 10 minutes by shuttle bus from Yashiro Station.

Easter Festival in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, April 7th (tentative)
Me and some fellow foreigners share our culture with the local children, with a huge, 1000-egg Easter egg hunt at the Fountain Park along the Chikuma River here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. Egg-related games and free horse buggy rides.

Chishiki-ji Temple's Spring Festival 4/17
A decidedly local traditional festival at a decidedly local temple. Absolutely 100% not touristy. Which makes it absolutetly 100% interesting for tourists from overseas, because it is a glimpse at local culture in rural Japan. I'll be there playing my flute with my fellow members of the Kamiyamada Lion Dance group.
5 minutes by car from Kamesei / Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, or 15 minutes on foot.

善光寺の灯明祭 Zenkoji's Tomyo Festival

千曲市稲荷山地区の「蔵の街」の雰囲気が大好きです。土壁の蔵は何となく時代を感じると言うか時代を超える風情がある。

しかし、その風情をどうやって守っていくのかが問題です。

守るように努力している稲荷山街並み委員会の高村さんから連絡が入りました。１５日の１２：００頃まで屋代駅の中の市民ギャラリースペースで稲荷山の街並みの写真など展示会を開催している。ぜひ見に行って下さい。

Chikuma City's Inariyama neighborhood is known as a 'kura' town thanks to all of the classic earthen-walled kura storehouses that remain. The townscape has a timeless feel to it thanks to the kura.

However, preserving the kura is a major issue for our town.

One group that is working hard at that is the Inariyama Townscape Committee. Takamura-san, the chairman, contacted me to let me know he has a display of photographs and artifacts from Inariyama showing at the gallery inside Yashiro Station. The display will be up through Sunday 15-Jan. noon. If you get a chance, please go and see it. Hopefully the display will raise awareness of the need to preserve these kura.

Myself and other local ex-pats have worked hard on these projects to promote Togura Kamiyamada Onsen and Chikuma City to travellers from overseas. We hope to share our enthusiasm and attract others to enjoy our adopted town, too.

この戸倉上山田温泉の中心にあるカラコロ足湯と周りの公園のイルミネーションは昨日、私ども旅館青年部の作業で完成になりました。これでこの冬、戸倉上山田にお越しになるお客さんの皆様が明るい飾りを楽しんで頂けます。

毎年、千曲市からイルミネーションを借りながら、少しずつ自分達のを増やしていました。今年は市が「毎年に頑張ってくれているからこれでさしあげます」と言ってくれました。私物になりました。継続して努力する価値はありましたね。

そしておかみの会も去年から協力してくれて、公園の舞台の分のイルミネーションを提供し始まりました。私たち青年部で取り付けをしましたが、お陰様で公園全体が明るくなりました。

青年部の皆さん(特に、イルミネーション委員長のＨｉｄｅｏさん)、ご苦労様でした。ＯＢの俊樹さんにも感謝!

Onsen Town Togura Kamiyamada's Kara-Koro Footbath and the surrounding park now are lit up at night for the winter. The other junior innkeepers and I put up the colorful illumination around the park so guests to our town this winter can enjoy the lights.

Every year, we purchase additional lights in addition to borrowing some from Chikuma City. This year, the City gave us the lights, saying "You have been working hard every year on putting up the lights, so we decided to go ahead and give them to you." All of our hard work is paying off!

And the Ladies Guild decided to get into the act, by supplying additional lights for the park's main stage. So now the entire park is lit up at night.

I'd like to give a big thanks to all the other junior innkeepers, especially "Illumination Chief" Hideo-san, and OB Toshiki-san.

信州ブレーブウォリアーズの試合にまた見に行きました。また応援で喉をやっちゃった。(応援し過ぎかな?）

前日で同じ相手チームに２０点で負けました。今回の試合はずっといい戦い。4Qの途中で4,5点ぐらいで負けていて、相手がボールを持っていて、やばいなと思いました。しかし、写真の様に最後で勝ちました。テンションの高い試合でした。

バスケを今まで見た事がない方と後で話したら、生で見て、尚且つマイチームの応援が出来て、楽しい!との声もありました。

せっかくこんなに喜ばれているバスケがあるから、旅館の経営者としてはどうしても「集客」を考えてしまいます。ブレーブウォリアーズとどうやってむすんで、戸倉上山田温泉を盛り上げるかと。とにかく、試合を見れば絶対に楽しめるから。

私が大ファンになったので、何とか考えたいと思っています。何かヒントがあれば、是非教えてください。

Nagano's new pro basketball team, the Shinshu Brave Warriors, played another series of home games here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen this weekend. I went to Sunday's game, and cheered my head off. (Almost literally -- my throat hurts so bad!)

The Warriors had lost to the same team the day before by 20 points. This game was really close the whole way. But midway through the 4th quarter, we were down by a couple of buckets and the other team had the ball. Uh oh! However, as you can see by the picture, somehow Tyler, Derek, Edward, Lee, Goya and the team pulled through in the end.

Afterwards, one person who had never been to a hoops game before in her life said it was really exciting to see the game live and to be able to root for the home team.

This is serious fun. So the innkeeper in me is trying to think about how to capitalize on having pro hoops right here in our onsen town. What can we do to connect the Brave Warriors with adding excitement to Togura Kamiyamada?

I've become a huge fan of the Warriors, and will be racking my brain for ideas. If you have any suggestions, please let me know!

プロバスケの信州Ｂｒａｖｅ　Ｗａｒｒｉｏｒｓの今週末の試合はまた戸倉体育館で行います。日曜日の試合の切符を買っておきました。また喉が痛くなるほど応援するぞ!

Nagano's pro hoops team, the Shinshu Brave Warriors are having their next series of home games right here in Togura Kamiyamada again this weekend. I got tickets to Sunday's game. I'm looking forward to yelling my throat sore again!

The Warriors' office is located in front of Yashiro Station. That's where tickets are available for purchase.
