戸倉上山田温泉の上の山城「荒砥城」にシアトルから遊びに来ているパパを連れて行きました。周辺の侍の歴史を説明したら、興味津々でした。やはり、日本のお城は人気があるね。

温泉街の近くに荒砥城があって、嬉しいです。戦国時代からの山城で形として残っているのこの荒砥城だけです。歴史やその時代の生活を学べるし、尚且つお城からの景色が最高です。千曲川を見下ろして、善光寺平や周辺の山々を眺める。そして、戦国時代の伝説の村上義清、武田信玄、上杉謙信の戦いしたところも見える。未だにそのころから残された地名があり、見晴らし台から見ながら侍の皆の動きを想像できます。

荒砥城。日本の侍のファンの皆さんにお勧め。うちのパパも大喜び。

Above our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada, we are fortunate to have a mountain fortress, Arato-jo. My dad is here visiting, so I took him up to see the fort. He found the samurai history of the area fascinating, and it was a great chance to see a little of what life was like during Japan's Warring States era.

Arato-jo's lookout provides a panoramic view of the Chikuma River valley and the surrounding mountains. This area hosted numerous samurai confrontations, and many of the place names relate to those battles. Seeing it all from Arato-jo gives a deep sense of the area's history.

荒砥城 Arato-jo Fortress

戸倉上山田温泉・千曲市の代表の酒蔵「姨捨正宗」は今年にまた蔵開きを開催する予定です。2012年度のは3月24日（土）10:00‐16:00で行う予定です。

歴史的な酒蔵の見学も出来、搾りたて日本酒の試飲、甘酒や豚汁サービスなど、あります。入場は無料です。

私にとっては一番魅力的なのは普段見れない酒蔵の中を見れる事。姨捨正宗は善光寺街道沿いにあって、歴史的な建物です。土壁の蔵、昔ながらの屋根瓦、300以上前の松の木、趣のある場所です。

この蔵開きは中を見るいい機会です。

The main local sake brewery for our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada is Obasute Masamune in Chikuma City's Yawata district. Once a year they open the brewery up for tours, and for 2012 the "Open Brewery Day" will be Saturday 24-March. Tours will take place from 10am to 4pm.

Besides being able to see the inside of the brewery, guests will also be treated to sample tastings as well as free amazake (sweet sake) and tonjiru (pork soup).

Located on the old Zenkoji Kaido road between Matsumoto and Nagano City, the Obasute Masamune brewery is rich in historical architecture. The thick earthen-walled storehouses with their distinctive curved kawara tile-clad roof are remnants of a time long gone by. There is even a 300+ year old Japanese pine tree in their garden.

The Obasute Masamune Open-Brewery Day is an excellent opportunity to tour this historical brewery.

戸倉上山田温泉の陶芸と民芸品専門店「たからや」でこんな可愛い物を見つけた：糸カレーライスとか糸とんかつなど。異とお蕎麦が一番可愛いと思った。

亀清旅館の「記念日プラン」でたからやの「佐良志奈焼き」を特典として付けていますのでよくお店に買いに行きます。行く度に新しい発見があるのでいつも楽しみです。今回はこの糸フーズでした。

Here in onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada, we have a pottery and crafts shop called Takaraya. There I discovered this new item: string food. Curry rice, pork cutlets, fried eggs -- all made out of string. How cute! My favorite is the string soba noodles!

At Kamesei Ryokan, we offer an Anniversary Plan where we provide a special present for the guests. One of the items is a set of ceramic tea cups in the Sarashina-yaki pottery style made and sold here at Takaraya. So I go to the shop often to buy the presents for our guests. Every time I go it seems they have some new item for sale. This time it is the string food!

最近は旅館の提供する通販が増えているようです。旅館なり知っている地元のお土産品、農産物、ここでしか買えない品物を販売する事によって、お客さんの喜びにつながると。

私がそんな様に町興しの集まりの戸倉上山田カラコロにぎわい協議会に案を出してみたら受けてくれました。今はこの戸倉上山田の合ってそうな業社に協力してくれるかどうか調査しています。

早く形にしたいと思いますので宜しくお願いします。

One of the recent trends in the ryokan world is for the inns to offer catalog shopping to the guests. By offering locally made products, fresh fruit and vegetables, and things that normally can only be bought locally, guests really appreciate the opportunity.

At a recent meeting of Togura-Kamiyamada's civic improvement Kara-Koro association I proposed such a catalog. Everyone enthusiastically accepted the idea. So now I am working on listing up what area businesses will cooperate.

I hope to get this catalog into action as soon as I can!

戸倉上山田温泉の隣の坂城町に「坂木宿ふるさと歴史館」がありまして、毎年は古雛まつりを開催する。２０１２年は２月１８日から４月１５日までです。

ついでに開催中は毎週日曜日に行う予定：
＊抹茶接待　（茶道ファンにお勧め）
＊坂木宿を巡るガイドツアー　（北国街道ファンにお勧め）

ちなみに、先日は別称温泉の柏屋別荘に行った時にその若旦那の斎藤さんに教えて頂いたが、雛人形って「姫」は今、向かって右側に座るが、明治時代までは左側だったそうです。
欧米を憧れた明治の皆さんは欧米を真似して、姫は左になった。ですから、「姫」が左に座っている雛人形は恐らく江戸時代から。

千曲市の公式観光協会HPは週1回ぐらいしか更新されていない現状では、私ども旅館若旦那らの方が観光情報を積極的に発信する立場になっています。ブログやら今の流行のフェースブックやら、これからも戸倉上山田温泉及び周辺の観光情報を提供したいと思っております。

須坂市田中本家のひな祭り

信州の代表のひな祭り、須坂市の田中本家
先日は田中本家いの方が亀清旅館に顔を出して頂いて、ひな祭りチラシ及び2012年度の田中本家のパンフを置いてくれました。今年のひな祭りは2月10日から4月9日まで開催予定だそうです。今年の下記の特徴３つあり:
１．高橋まゆみ創作雛人形展　同時開催
２．江戸時代ひな祭り料理　再現会食会
３．江戸の食器で愉しむフランス料理
（入管などの料金及び2.と3.の開催日は田中本家のHPへ）

Our Chikuma City's official Tourism Association's website has only been updated once a week lately. So the other local innkeepers and I have decided to take upon ourselves to proactively disseminate tourist-related information for our town and surrounds. Using blogs and newfangled tools like Facebook, I hope to get the word out about all of the exciting things coming up in our area.

Call it the Kamesei Tourism Office! (LOL!)

Suzaka City's Tanaka Honke Museum and their Hina Doll Festival

The Hina Festival is traditionally celebrated on March 3rd except up here in Nagano where we do it one month later ('cuz March is still too cold here!). And our area's premier Hina Doll display is at the Tanaka Honke Museum in Suzaka City, east of Nagano City.

The staff from the museum paid us a visit here at Kamesei Ryokan and dropped off their Hina Doll Festival brochure as well as the museum's 2012 pamphlet. Special for this year's Hina festival are:

*Display of Hina Dolls by local popular doll artist Takahashi Mayumi
*Recreated Edo-era Hina Doll Festival menu lunch
*French formal lunch using Edo-era dishes

今年のイースターエッグフェスティバルin戸倉上山田温泉は先日にお知らせしたように4月7日（土）で行います。イメージロゴが決まれましたので改めてお知らせします。千曲市のAETのベンさんが選んでくれて、チラシを作ってくれました。千曲国際交流協会の皆さんが力を合わせて提供するイベントです。

イースターエッグフェスティバルは親も子供も楽しめるイベントなので大勢の参加者を望んでいます。フェースブックのイベントページも作りました。

上山田の節分豆まき祭の為に、城山を登って上にある善光寺別院に行きました。ついでに、道挟んで向こう側にある旧歴史館に行ってみました。建物の横にいくつかの像がある。石のも、銅像も。その銅像は特に不思議です。何と第二次世界大戦のマッカーサーやChiang Kai Shek(蒋介石)。この戸倉上山田温泉にマッカーサーの銅像？！ 尚且つ、いつものサングラスをかけていて。不思議でしょうがない。

イースターエッグフェスティバルin戸倉上山田2012年は4月7日（土）に行う予定になりました。今年は何と第7回目。（私の長野での7つ目の春との事！）

この子供たちの為のイベントは少しずつ定着してきている。千曲国際交流協会が主催して、欧米文化の中で春を代表するイベントを地元の子供達とシェアーしながら、戸倉上山田温泉・千曲川の良さと触れ合う事が目的。

去年は100数人のお子さん達が参加して、今年はさらに賑やかにしたいと思っています。地元の子供達だけではなく、観光客の参加も目指します。

当日の内容は：

The 2012 date for the Easter Egg Festival in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen has been set for Saturday April 7th. This is the 7th annual festival (which means I've been in Nagano for 7 springs?!).

The festival is run by the Chikuma Int'l Exchange Association (with yours, truly as the event organizing chairperson). Every year it gets a bit more popular, with 100+ local kids participating last year. It's a chance to share one of the major springtime customs from the West with the children here, as well as a way of adding excitement to our onsen town.

Details of the event are as follows:

Location: the fountain park alongside the Chikuma River in front of Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen
Reception starts at 10:00, event starts at 10:30.
Following the Easter Egg Hunt will be several egg-related games (egg toss, spoon relay, New bunny hop, scrambled egg game) as well as egg coloring and face painting. Horse Buggy rides will also be available, and all participants will receive a pass for a free onsen bath at one of our town's many onsen inns.
