戸倉上山田温泉の2012年の温泉夏祭りと千曲川花火大会のお知らせです。

上山田温泉夏祭り　2012年7月14日（土）と15日（日）
温泉の代表のイベント：ご神体のお神輿やでかい勇獅子、冠着太鼓、民踊流し、山の花火、お神楽獅子舞など、迫力のあるイベントです。祭りの大体の予定:

土曜日（地元向け）
午前中に上山田のそれぞれの地区で住民がお神輿などで地区を回る。祭典と役員が開会式を開催し、私ども旅館青年部が下駄供養をやる。
午後はそれぞれの地区から上山田温泉の中央公園で集まって、温泉街の中で行列をする。
夕方は民踊流しと若連のご神体神輿。

日曜日（観光客向け）
午後から若連のお神輿と勇獅子、太鼓、そしてフィナーレに山の花火。ドラマチックな祭りである。

ちなみに、私は祭り男なので土曜日に下駄供養から始め、地区の神輿、神楽の獅子笛、夜は若連のお神輿で次から次へ飛ぶ。日曜日は午後からの若連神輿。

千曲川花火　2012年8月7日（火）
北信の一番大きい花火のイベント。毎年は8月7日です。旧暦の七夕で。他の花火大会よりうんと近くで見れるし、ヒカリは川で反射して、音は周辺の山々で反射する、刺激的な花火。フィナーレは万葉橋の「ナイアガラ」。

両イベントは亀清旅館もそうだし、どこも満室になるので予約はお早めに。

Our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada's 2 biggest events are coming up: the Kamiyamada Onsen Summer Festival and the Chikuma River Fireworks. The 2012 Dates for the two are as follows.

Kamiyamada Onsen Summer Festival 2012: July 14-15
Saturday is more for us locals, with neighborhood parades and official ceremonies including the Geta Offering run by us members of the ryokan junior association.
Sunday is more for tourists, with a massive 50-person shi-shi lion and omikoshi shrines carried by groups of sweaty guys and gals, with the backdrop of a taiko drum performance and a fireworks display launched from the mountain behind town. You will never see so much intense energy in one spot anywhere else in Japan.

Chikuma River Fireworks Display 2012: August 7th.
Northern Nagano's largest fireworks show take place above the picturesque Chikuma River. Get up close for an awe-inspiring view as the brilliant flashes reflect off the surface of the river and the 'boom' of the explosions bounce off the surrounding mountains.

千曲川花火Chikuma River Fireworks

2012年の坂城バラ祭りは6月2日から6月17日までの開催です。日曜日に家族で行ってみました。バラは見事に綺麗に咲いていました。坂城のバラ園の皆様の努力のお蔭で、年々に綺麗になっています。バラのアーチ（入るとその良い香り！）が増えていて、バラの種類も増えました。紫の珍しい形の花や、私の一番気に入りのはDiana Princess of Walesでした。

今年で第7回のバラ祭り。観光客の人数で言えば、大人気になってきました。12時がピークだったせいか、車の列がすごかった。電車（又は自転車）で行くか、12時を避けるかがお勧めです。

坂城バラ祭りSakaki Rose Festival

長男のAndy君は学校のプロジェクトで上山田の観光パンフを作った。6年生の皆が作っているそうです。小学生の目から見る上山田。きっと新しい発想が出るでしょう。

市の観光協会に観光館の展示スペースで展示が出来ないか、打ち合わせしてみています。せっかく作っているので、観光客も興味があるでしょうし、学生は自分たちで作ったパンフが皆に見せたら嬉しいでしょうし。

他の温泉地の小学生がボランティアーガイドしたり、東京への宣伝キャラバンをしたり、子供のころから観光向きに考える事例は沢山あります。小さいころから自分の町に誇りを持つきかけになる。上山田小学校もこのパンフ作りから始まって、継続して欲しいな。

Our first son, Andy, is working on a Kamiyamada brochure for tourists. It's part of a project for his Kamiyamada Elementary School 6th grade class. Apparently each of his classmates is making their own brochure. I wonder what facets of Kamiyamada the 6th graders will choose to feature in their brochures.

The Tourism Center in Kamiyamada has a display space on the 2nd floor. I'm asking the city's Tourism Association to see if the 6th graders' hand-made brochures can be displayed there. Visitors would certainly be entertained by the brochures, and I'm sure the students would be elated to have their brochures displayed for everyone to see.

Elementary schools in other onsen towns often involve their students in the town's tourism. For example, student volunteer guides, or trips to Tokyo to promote their towns. Getting the students involved in their town's promotion early would certainly help to get them thinking proactively about the town. And it would help to instill a sense of pride, too.

Hopefully this hand-made brochures project is just a start for Kamiyamada Elementary School.

史上最強のゆるキャラ登場：　戸倉上山田温泉の「おんせんまんじゅサン」！地元のAtelier Bambooの佐藤さんがデザインして、そしてこんな携帯ストラップを作りました。メイド・イン・チャイナではなくて、メイドイン上山田、佐藤さんの手作業で。

まだまだ数が少ない限られている中で、亀清では少し手に入りましたのでのフロントで販売しております。４００円です。

可愛いと言うか、強いと言うか、とにかく、温泉です！

Everywhere you go in Japan, you come across funky image characters. Well, you've never seen one like this -- Onsen Manju-san. He's the toughest image character in history, and he represents our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada!

Local craftsman, Satoh-san from Atelier Bamboo, came up with the idea for Onsen Manju-san, and made a bunch of cell phone straps with the character. These ain't Made in China -- their Made in Kamiyamada by Satoh-san's own hands!

There is only a limited number available, and we here at Kamesei managed to get a small allotment of them. The Onsen Manju-san key holders are available at our front desk for 400 yen each.

フラットヘッドって知っていますか？戸倉の会社でアメリカンカジュアルのジーパンを作っている会社。元々は独自でアメリカから古着を輸入してここで売っていましたが、センスと品質の評判が良くて、自分のブランドを作りだしました。ファンが段々と増えて、芸能人も買っているそうです。社長はクラシックの車も集まっている。その二つを合わせて、毎年は長野市にあるM-Waveを貸切してスーパーウィークエンドを開催しています。

2012年のSuper Weekendは9月1日（土）・2日（日）の予定です。フラットヘッドのアメカジ服と色んな店の雑貨・おもちゃ、アメリカンファニチャー等などのフリーマーケットと、
２００台のモーターショー、そしてハンバーガーあ等のフードフェスタ―そしてクラシックロックのライブなどのインターテインメント。

今年で７年目。以前は行きましたが、アメリカの６０～７０年代のファンの天国でした。

実は今回、フラットヘッドの本社に顔を出してみました。今は戸倉上山田の通販カタログをいう企画に手伝っています。フラットヘッドのジーパンや帽子はどうかと思って、話してみました。そうすると、「お客さんの顔を見てからじゃないと売らない;通販ではなくてお店のみ」と断りました。

その拘りはえらい！

なおかつ、断るだけじゃなくて、子会社のヨーグルトジェラートの工房の商品をその通販カタログの為に紹介してくれました。なかなか良い結果が出ました。

との事で、Super Weekendは楽しみ！

Togura is home to an 'American Casual' clothing maker called The Flat Head. Besides making classic jeans and t-shirts, the owner also has a huge classic car collection. Every year, they rent out the entire M-Wave hall in Nagano City and put on an event called "Super Weekend".

Super Weekend 2012 will take place on September 1st and 2nd. This will be the 7th annual event, and will feature a flea market (including Flat Head merchandise) and a motor show. There will be food booths and live entertainment as well.

Actually, I stopped by the Flat Head main office to ask them about participating in the Togura-Kamiyamada catalog I am assisting with. They declined, saying their jeans and t-shirts are only sold at their stores where customers can physically see and try on the merchandise. However, one of their subsidiaries makes yoghurt gelatto, and we will try incorporating that into the catalog.

I really applaud Flat Head's efforts!

Super Weekend

長野県の５ヵ所が共同で東京にて５つの旅行会社との商談会が行われました。戸倉上山田温泉が選ばれた事と、その説明するのに私が呼ばれたとの事、嬉しかったです。

色んな説明を聞いた中で感じたのは戸倉上山田の位置が中心的でちょうど良い。一時間前後で善光寺、戸隠、小布施、上田城、軽井沢、美ヶ原、安曇野、松本、等など。

なおかつ、温泉のお湯も良いし！

との事を、旅行会社にPRしてきました！

5 areas from Nagano Prefecture were invited to give a sales presentation to travel agents in Tokyo. Not only was I delighted that Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen was one of the chosen 5, but I was asked to give the presentation.

One thing that came out of the sales talk was how convenient our onsen town is location-wise. So many sightseeing spots just an hour or so away: the esteemed Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City, the spiritual mountains, supreme soba noodles and hidden ninjas of Togakushi, shopping and resort paradise of Karuizawa, the snow monkeys of Jigokudani, the cool castle town of Matsumoto, and so much more.

Hopefully I successfully promoted this to the travel agents!

「戸倉上山田温泉はお母さん達に優しい」という運動で、
母の日にお母さんたちの為に我々旅館青年部が前日に作った花のコサージュを配りました。

配った場所はでおかみの会の主催の朝市でした。春から秋まで、毎週日曜日の朝6:30から戸倉上山田温泉の中心にあるカラコロ足湯で行われている。

朝市は年々に大きくなっていて、農家さんや地元の商店が売っている品物が段々と増えています。採りたての野菜はもちろん、千曲ブランドの商品や地元の職人の民芸品など、朝早く起きる価値があります。実際に野菜を育っている人、商品を作っている人とお話しが直接できるという事も魅力。

母の日の花のコサージュ運動こそ、毎年継続していきたいと思っています。

As part of my effort to make our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada more welcoming for mothers, I helped give out corsages this Mothers Day morning. The ryokan junior association members and I made the corsages out of carnations the previous day.

The corsage-giving took place at the Sunday Morning Farmers Market that the local womens guild puts on at the Kara-Koro footbath in the center of our onsen town. The market takes place every Sunday morning from spring to fall, starting around 6am.

Every year the Market gets bigger and bigger. Local farmers bring their produce and local shops bring a wide selection of products. Arts and crafts, rare plants and flowers too. And you get to talk directly with the farmers and craftsmen.

Hopefully the Corsages for Mothers Day will continue to get bigger every year, too!

今日は戸倉上山田旅館青年部が集まって、花のコサージュを作りました。地元の花屋さん「二通園」の指導で、若旦那達との家族が約１００個の赤とピンクと白のカーネーションのコサージュを作りました。

日曜日は本番の母の日なので、この戸倉上山田温泉の中心となるカラコロ足湯の公園で私たち旅館若旦那がお母さん達にプレゼントします。おかみの会の朝市にて。

お母さん達を大事にしている戸倉上山田温泉。ただでコサージュを配りますのでお母さんの皆様はどうぞ、お出かけ下さい。

The Togura Kamiyamada junior innkeepers gathered today to make corsages to give to Moms for Mothers Day. Under the professional guidance of our local florist, Nitsuen, we made over 100 red and pink and white carnation corsages.

Tomorrow morning, on Mothers Day itself, we will set up a booth at the morning farmers market that will take place at the Kara-Koro footbath in the center of our onsen town. There we will hand out the corsages we made to all Mothers who come.

私ども戸倉上山田温泉旅館組合青年部の主催で毎年行う「牛に引かれて善光寺詣り」は今年で31回目ということで、参加者約300人が戸倉上山田温泉から善光寺までの３０ｋｍを歩きました。今年は私も完歩しました。

出発した時は雲は一つもない青空だったが、途中で曇ってきて、雷が鳴ったり強烈な嵐になったり、最後はまた晴れたというダイナミックな天気でした。

歩きながら沢山の参加者とお話が出来ました。この「牛に引かれて」ウォーキングイベントは長野県の代表なウォーキング（山梨県韮崎市から長野県佐久市の間、78㎞を夜を徹して歩く「佐久市強歩大会」など）と一緒に並べる様になってきたようです。31年間も頑張って継続してきたことで、それなりの価値になってきました。

今年の参加者の皆様、ご苦労様でした！

The 31st annual "Pulled by an Ox to Zenkoji" walking event from our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada 30 kilometers to the venerable Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City was held today. This year's event was marked by some very dynamic weather. It started with a clear blue sky but detiorated into a thunder and wind storm. But the 300 or so participants, myself included, safely made the trip!

皆様は子供の日はいかがでしたか？子供さん達と遊びましたか？私どもは自転車でこの戸倉上山田温泉から約4.2km離れているさらしなの里古代体験パークまで行って、縄文時代の遊びをしました。

長男はひお越しを体験して、二男と娘は石を削ってペンダントを作りました。縄文人の環境を守る意志のアニメも見たり、その時代から復元した家で遊んだりした。

長男は上山田小学校の6年生の歴史授業で縄文の時代をちょうど習っている。この同じ千曲市にある森将軍塚が全国の教科書に出てくるらしい。それなのに、上山田小学校は授業で見学しに行かない。私が先生に怒っときました。学校に頼れない事、良く分かりました。次回は子供達を連れて、将軍塚見学！

Did everyone enjoy Childrens Day (May 5th)? I took our kids for a bicycle ride to the Sarashina no Sato Ancient Experience Park, a 4.2km ride from our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada.

The park is set up to provide a glimpse of what life was like in prehistoric Japan, the Jomon era. Besides a recreated Jomon village, there is a sort of historical museum. Not only are there displays and an educational video on Jomon lifestyle, but there are a series of hands-on activities to experience. Our oldest son tried making fire with sticks of wood, while our #2 son and daughter carved a soapstone into a pendant.

Chikuma City is also fortunate to have a 1600 year old ancient tomb, the Mori Shogun Tumulus. It appears in all 6th graders textbooks in Japan. I'll have to take our kids for another bike ride to go there next time.
