その浴衣を出して、炭坑節を練習しておいて、
戸倉上山田温泉で今年はまた盆踊り大会を開催します。
2012年の盆踊り大会は8月13日（月）、14日（火）と15日（水）で行う予定。
上山田温泉の本通りは歩行者天国になって、私ども商工会青年部は射的や金魚つくい、綿あめ、焼き鳥などの屋台を出して、賑やかになります。
踊り以外は大ビンゴ大会、すいか割り、冠着太鼓の演奏など時間帯によって様々なイベントも予定しています。

本当は私が今年の大会にミスター浴衣・ミス浴衣コンテストを復活したかったけど、説得力が足りず、残念ながら今年はない。まあ、それ無くても地元の皆様及びお盆の間にお越しになるお客様の皆様がご一緒に踊れますので、この夏こそ、盆踊りの良い思い出がきっとできると思います。

Dust off your yukata, practice your Tankobushi (coal miner's dance) moves, and get ready for this year's Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen Bon-Odori festival.

The Bon-Odori dates for 2012 will be August 13th (Monday), 14th (Tuesday) and 15th (Wednesday). Kamiyamada Onsen's main street will be closed to automobiles as the dance will take over the street. Me and the members of the Junior Chamber of Commerce will once again set up food and game booths.

Besides the dancing, the festival also features a giant Bingo contest, a watermelon-splitting contest, a taiko drum performance by our local Kamuriki Taiko troupe, and other fun events.

Actually, I was hoping to reintroduce a Mr. Yukata and Miss Yukata contest, but wasn't successful in persuading the powers that be. But even without a yukata contest, the dancing and other events are sure to make for a memorable O-Bon holiday for locals and visitors alike.

戸倉上山田温泉から車で５分、自転車で約１５分に智識寺がある。６月～７月にお寺の参道のアジサイが綺麗に咲いて、「あじさい寺」と言う別名。

今年は智識寺のアジサイは特に綺麗やって気がする。近場に行ったので行ってみたら、写真の様に紫陽花が並べて、彩に咲いていました。

その時に住職が挨拶してくれた。去年の４月から来ていて、若手の住職です。彼が来るまでは無人寺だったので国の重要文化財である秘仏、十一面観音の御開帳は年に一度だけだった。今は声をかければ、本堂を開けてくれるそうです。

本堂こそ、創建は1573年で国の重要文化財に指定されているそうです。茅葺屋根の建物で立派です。初夏の紫陽花の花と似合う。敷地内の木は秋になると赤や黄色に咲くのでそれはまた茅葺屋根の本堂と綺麗な合わせになる。

5 minutes by car or approximately 15 minutes by bicycle from our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada is the venerable Chishiki-ji Temple. It is also known as "Ajisai-dera", or 'hydrangea temple', due to the beautiful hydrangea plants that line the temple's main path.

Since I was in the area, I stopped by to check out the hydrangea flowers. This year the flowers seem to be especially colorful and abundant. I also got to meet the head monk. He's a young chap (not sure, but not even 30 years old?), and just moved to Chishiki-ji last year. Until then, the temple was un-manned, and its sacred image, an 11-faced goddess statue (a designated National Cultural Treasure) was only displayed once a year. Now, just knock at the office and if the monk is there, he will gladly show you the statue.

The temple's main building is also a registered National Cultural Treasure. The thatched roof building was built in 1573. Its magnificent wood construction and timeless beauty of the thatched roof contrast so beautifully with the colorful hydrangea blossoms. And again in the fall, the contrast with the autumn leaves is striking, too.

智識寺 Chishiki-ji

私ども旅館経営者にとってはお客様からの口コミがうんと大事です。例えば、大手予約サイトじゃらんネットでの口コミを見れば、改善すべきなところの把握が出来るし、満足度を測る事が出来る。まあ、じゃらんの口コミに注意を払い過ぎたら危険ですが、重要な参考になる。

自分の宿の満足度を見るのに大事だし、周りの宿と比較するのも重要。戸倉上山田温泉・千曲市では宿泊施設31件がじゃらんネットと登録しています。時々そのトップ宿を見て、総合、夕食、朝食、接客、掃除、お風呂、お部屋の比較する表を作る。ちょっと気になっていた事があって、また作ってみた。

亀清旅館は相変わらず上の順位になっていて、安心しました。特に、接客と夕食の点数が高い。お風呂とお部屋も少しずつ上がってきています。露天風呂造りや客室改造の影響が出ています。

今回、一番驚いたのは口コミの数。トップ13軒の口コミの数は合計６３５件でした。前回の時、２０１０年２月１７日には全部で１３９５件もあった。約半分まで減りました。これはFacebookと他のSNSの影響だと思われます。口コミは相手を知っているSNSにシフトしてきた。一般の口コミは相手が知らない;書いた人がアホかもしれない。Facebookの場合はクチコミを書いた人がアホがどうかは分かる。

宿泊の業界も変わって行きますね。

Guest reviews are a key part to an innkeeper's business. They give you indications on things that need to be improved and measure your guests' satisfaction level. Here in Japan, leading reservation site, Jalan-net has a thorough Guest Reviews section that travelers and innkeepers alike use.

Not only is it important to monitor your own inn's reviews, but innkeepers should also compare their reviews to those of nearby inns. Jalan-net lists 31 properties for Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen and Chikuma City. From time to time, I make a chart listing the top inns and showing their overall score, dinner, breakfast, cleanliness, service, rooms, and onsen bath scores.

I was glad to see that Kamesei Ryokan once again came in at near the top in all of the categories. We got especially high marks in service and dinner.

The thing that surprised me the most with this year's tally was that the overall number of reviews has decreased dramatically: from 1,395 in February of 2010 to 635 now. That's almost half! More people are shifting their 'reviews' patterns to Facebook and other SNS venues. With a generic review, you don't know if the person writing it is an idiot or not. With Facebook, at least you know the person writing the review (and whether or not they are an idiot).

Our industry is a-changing!

This weekend July 14th and 15th is onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada's big summer festival. This year, for the first time ever, there will be an "Onsen Shop" set up selling some of the various goods that our town has developed recently. The shop will be located in the middle of all the activity, just to the side of the taiko stage, and will be open from 11am to 10pm on both days. Come and check out our town's funky merchandise!

Heard of the 'Koishi no Yu' legend?

Koishi means 'pebble', but its a play on words and could also mean 'love'. The legend goes like this:

"A long, long time ago,
(Don't legends always start out like that?)
the local princess's husband went off to war,
and didn't come back,
so she prayed to the gods.
The gods replied, 'Go down to the Chikuma River and find 100 red pebbles. When you find the 100th one, your lover will return.'"

So how many pebbles do you think are in the design of the t-shirt? Yes, and the 100th one is ...

小石の湯伝説 More on the Koishi no Yu Legend (in Japanese)

戸倉上山田温泉の近くの森「あんずの里」の杏生産が日本一である。杏狩りと杏ジャム作りは人気ある。人気があり過ぎて、杏狩りを提供している農家が早く終わってしまったそうです。（市の観光協会によると、7月5日が最後だった。）しかし、7月8日は私がアメリカから来たお客さんとうちの子供も連れて、杏狩りはちゃんとできた。ハーコットや日本の伝統的な種類、その農家の新しく作った種類、様々な杏を味わえた。

公式な杏狩りが終わったのに、どうして亀清旅館だけがお客さんに提供が出来ている？もっと近場の戸倉の若宮地区の農家、杏宝園と深い付き合いがあるから。杏宝園は千曲市の杏の認識度を高まりたいので、できる限りで杏狩りの楽しみをお客さんに提供している。

千曲川のソ側にある杏宝園の畑の杏狩りがまだまだ続いていますので、体験してみたい方は亀清旅館へのご連絡をどうぞ。採りたての杏の味は忘れられない。

Mori "Apricot Village", a 20 minute drive from our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada, is Japan's largest producer of apricots. Picking apricots is a popular activity here this time of year. Actually, it's become a bit too popular -- our city's Tourism Association announced that the two orchards officially offering u-pick finished for the season on July 5th. Yet on Sunday July 8th, we here at Kamesei Ryokan took an American family that was staying with us to go pick apricots.

How can Kamesei provide apricot picking when the city cannot? We have a strong relationship with Kyohoen, an orchardist in Togura's Wakamiya district which is even closer, and Kyohoen is working hard to raise awareness of our areas apricots. So they provide u-picking to as many people as possible.

Our son Andy tagged along as we visited Kyohoen's orchard and tasted so many different varieties: Harcot, heritage varieties, even some new experimental varieties that Kyohoen is developing. Tasting an apricot picked right off the tree is an unforgettable experience.

戸倉上山田の新しい産直ギフト通販カタログの試食会は昨日、千曲市観光会館で行われた。当温泉の旅館の皆さんが集まって、カタログに載っている品物の味見が出来た。お客様にお勧めする中で、自分達でまず知らなければならないという事で、農家さんや職人の皆さんがそれぞれの品物を持って来てくれた。

地元の新聞やテレビ、ラジオの取材もあって、これからのお中元の時期に向かって地元の皆様にもこの新しいカタログの活躍が出来たら嬉しいと思っています。

戸倉上山田で沢山の良い品物が作られているのでこのカタログで紹介が出来て、良かったと思います。問い合わせがあれば、亀清旅館へどうぞ。

Togura-Kamiyamada's new Gift Catalog has been out for two weeks. The group behind the catalog, our Kara-koro civic improvement organization, held a tasting party yesterday so that staff members of our area's ryokans and hotels can be familiar with the products showcased in the catalog. Hopefully the hotel staff will now be able to better introduce the products to guests that come stay at our onsen.

Several local TV, radio and newspapers came and reported on the event. So hopefully local people will know about the new catalog and use it for the upcoming O-Chugen summer gift-giving season.

The members of the Kara-koro group and I worked hard to put the catalog together. I am excited that we are able to promote so many of the great products made here in Togura-Kamiyamada.

戸倉上山田のラベンダー畑は見事に咲いています。温泉街から自転車で約10分のところで千曲川の側、周辺の山々の背景で、良い香りのラベンダー広がっています。

娘の美咲ちゃんを連れて、今年の畑の具合を見に行きました。また綺麗に咲きだしました。説明看板がありました:

「大勢の皆さんにお楽しみ頂く為、
6月30日（土）まで観賞のみとさせて頂きます。
摘み取りはご遠慮ください。
摘み取り期間は7月1日（日）～シーズン完了まで、
お一人様30本までとさせて頂きます。」

日本は花を観光で使い過ぎの癖があるのに、
観光臭くなく（ラベンダーアイスは無いぞ！）
単純に楽しめるラベンダー畑があって、嬉しい。
（自分の国、アメリカできっとこういう畑をもっと商売用に利用しっちゃう。）

Togura Kamiyamada's Lavender field is in full bloom. A quick 10-minute bike ride from the onsen, along the banks of the Chikuma River with the green hills in the background, the lavender fields spread out before you in all their colorful glory and with their lovely fragrance.

I took our daughter Misaki down to the fields to see how they're shaping up this year, and was pleased to find them blooming so beautifully. There was a sign that said:
"In order for everybody to appreciate the lavender, please enjoy with your eyes only until 30-June. From 01-July, lavender picking will be allowed (30 stems per person limit)."

In Japan, so many times flowers are over-used for commercial purposes. So being able to enjoy these lavender plants without, for example, a lavender soft ice vendor, is so refreshing. (Back in my home country, America, there would probably be an attempt to commercialize something like this.)

戸倉上山田温泉から車で約１５分で桜つつみほたるの里という蛍の名所があります。夕べは初めて行ってみましたが、蛍の動きは光の踊りの様で、感心しました。

うちの子供達も連れて行きましたが、５歳の美咲ちゃんは特にその静かな光の動きで不思議がっていました。

場所は上田市下塩尻で千曲川の側です。駐車所（有料:１００円/台）とトイレがあります。ほたるの里会の宮下会長と話しましたが、夜１９:４５頃に蛍が光り始まる。そして舞いのピークが２０:００だそうです。

千曲市観光協会は「ホタル祭り見学ツアー」を実施しています。戸倉上山田温泉が２０：００です。一人１０００円となります。５日間限定：６月２０日（水）、２１日（木）、２２日（金）、２３日（土）、２４日（日）。問い合わせは亀清旅館へどうぞ。

桜つつみほたるの里

戸倉上山田温泉裏に1252ｍの冠着山（伝説の「姨捨山」）が立っています。冠着の北側に久露滝があります。先日の父の日の山登りはこの久露滝経由でした。

６ｍぐらいな高さの久露滝は長野県のＨＰによると、
冠着山からの湧水で、一級河川雄沢川の源流にあたり、
自然豊かな場所にあります。
また、滝には生きる化石ハコネサンショウウオが
今も生息しています。

初めて見ましたが、柔らかな流れの滝でついに子供達と一緒に入ってみました。自然な水シャワーで最高に気持ちいい。これはまた8月の無茶苦茶な暑い日に絶対来たいと思っています。本当にクールパワーや。

久露滝は一の鳥居登山口から登って約15分です。（その登山口は戸倉上山田温泉から車で約15分です。）

1252-meter Kamuriki Mountain towers over our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada. On the north side of the mountain is a cute little waterfall called Kuro-taki. This past Fathers Day the kids and I climbed the mountain via Kuro-daki so I got to see the falls for my first time.

According to the Nagano Prefecture website, the approximately 6-meter tall (short?) falls are formed by a stream fed by spring water higher up on Kamuriki Mtn. The stream is a source of Yuzawa River which continues down and joins the Chikuma River.
The falls are home to Japanese Clawed Salamander, Onychodactylus japonicus, which is considered to be a living fossil.

We didn't spot any salamanders, but we couldn't resist the temptation to take a shower in the falls. It was so refreshing! I can't wait to come back here on a hot August day and take advantage of Kuro Falls' natural chill power!

The Kuro-taki waterfall is a 15 minute hike up from the Ichinotorii trailhead, which is 15 minutes by car from Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen.
