信州の紅葉は面白いです。最少は千畳敷カールや志賀高原の様な標高の高い所から始まって、段々と下がってきます。蓼科や戸隠（鏡池！）に移ってからやっと戸倉上山田温泉（標高３７０ｍ）の周辺の木の葉っぱの色が変わってきます。

温泉の裏にある冠着山でその紅葉の前線の日々の変化が見れる。３日前ぐらいは頂上の色が変わって、少しずつ下がってきました。今日あたりは温泉街の中でも葉っぱは綺麗な色に変わってきました。

It's fun to see how the fall foliage show plays out here in Nagano Prefecture. First, the leaves start to change color at Senjojiki Kaar and the top of Shiga Kogen, and other high altitude areas. Then the fall colors slowly progress to lower elevations, like Togakushi (with Kagami Ike = 'Mirror Pond' being the best spot). Finally it reaches down to our level here at onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada (elevation 370 meters).

The mountain behind our onsen town, 1252-meter Kamuriki-yama, is perfect for seeing the daily progress of the fall-leaves 'line'. Just a few days ago, the peak of the mountain had started to change colors, then the middle, now the trees down here at the base have turned yellow and red and orange.

この戸倉上山田温泉の特徴の一つは忘年会と新年会のシーズンでにぎやかになる事である。長野県の北部と東部の企業、団体、地区のグループなどが年に一度の集まりで泊りにお越しになる。温泉のお湯も良いし、それぞれの宿の料理も工夫しているし、芸者さんもいるし、宴会後の為の繁華街もあるし、皆さんの仲間と集まる場所として最適。

しかし、この頃は不景気、忘年会を止めた会社が増えてきた。それでも、年に一度はやはり、一年間の苦労を記念して、仲間作りも兼ねて集まるべきだよ！とのアピールは、私達戸倉上山田温泉旅館組合をしたい。その為には去年から「ビッグプレゼント」キャンペーンを始まった。

この忘・新年会キャンペーンの為に、旅館の皆が北信・東信の大企業や役場に宣伝のキャラバンを行いました。その出発式が地元のテレビで取り上がれたし、私が２４日に旅館の仲間と長野市内のテレビ局や旅行会社に回りました。

とにかく、皆様は忘・新年会をどうするかと悩む方はいるでしょうけど、この厳しい時代だからこそ仲間との絆を深める為にやった方がと、そして戸倉上山田温泉が最適な場面との事を発信しています！

Our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada has always been unique in that one of our busiest seasons is the 'bonenkai' ('forget the year' = year-end party) and 'shin-nenkai' (new-year party) time from November through March. Local businesses, clubs, neighborhood groups, etc. hold banquets at our onsen to reward their members for a year of hard work. Or a lot used to, until the economy forced many to cut back such gatherings.

The ryokan association here at Togura Kamiyamada Onsen wants to encourage everyone that in a tough economy like this, it is even more important to take time to deepen relationships with ones fellow members and to honor everyone's efforts over the past year. 戸倉上山田温泉のおかみの会のプロデュース、アトリエバンブーの佐藤さんの作品で、この地元の「小石（恋し）の湯」伝説のオブジェ、「幸せの赤い石」は１０月２１日に発表されました。

カラコロ足湯のある公園内で設置されているモニュメントは皆様の叶い事を待っています。ハロウィーンパーティーの前に、魂入りの儀式が行われました。亀清旅館の若女将も参加しました。

On October 21st, Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's newest landmark was officially dedicated, the "Red Stone of Happiness".

Our onsen's Ladies Guild commissioned local artist Satoh-san to make the monument. Located in the main park in the middle of the onsen, the red stone refers a local legend about finding 100 red stones in the Chikuma River and having your wish granted.

A special ceremony was held on the 21st with a shinto priest presiding over a blessing for the stone. Kamesei Ryokan's junior proprietress, Mari, participated as well. The event took place right before the big Halloween party.

So, next time you come to onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada, come and bring your wish to the red rock of happiness.

２１日に行われたハロウィーンイベントは大成功。地元のお子さん達が異文化と触れ合えて、温泉街が盛り上がれて、親子遊びはたっぷりできました。

The event, which took place on October 21st, was a huge success. So many local children got to experience a bit of Western culture, and our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada came alive with colorfully costumed children, all in good family fun.

千曲国際交流協会Chikuma Int'l Culture Exchange Assoc.

またハロウィーンの時期になりました。長野市松代地区の農家さん、花見さんは毎年、かぼちゃを育ってくれています。今年は豊富だったそうです。

千曲国際交流協会のメンバーと、ハロウィーン参加者の数人と軽トラ3台でかぼちゃ畑に行って、沢山のかぼちゃを積みました。

これで、次の日のハロウィーン＠戸倉上山田温泉のかぼちゃランタン作りは楽しく出来る！

花見農園さんはかぼちゃ以外、トマトなど色々なお野菜を育っています。めずらしい種類も沢段あります。

私がシアトルに住んでいたころ、かぼちゃ畑へ行くのは毎年の楽しみだった。花見さんがこうやってかぼちゃ畑も提供してくれて、嬉しい限りです。

Halloween season has come around again. That means our annual trip to the pumpkin patch in Nagano City's Matsushiro district. Our farmer buddy Kenmi-san grows a huge batch of pumpkins there for us every year, and this year members of the Chikuma International Exchange Association and I, and some Halloween Event participant, took 3 "K-tora" baby pick-up trucks and filled them with bright orange pumpkins.

This year, the pumpkin harvest was especially good, so we have lots of giant ones for the jack-o-lantern carving at the following day's "Halloween in Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen" party.

Besides pumpkins, Kenmi-san grows tomatoes and lots of other vegetables. He specializes in several varieties of heirloom vegetables. I am really grateful for him to provide this pumpkin patch for us, as I have fond memories of going to a patch every year when I was a kid back in the States.

花見農園 Kenmi Farm

戸倉上山田温泉の周辺で子供達が喜ばれている所は沢山ある。戸隠のちびっこ忍者村とか、地獄谷の野猿公苑、篠ノ井の茶臼山動物園、軽井沢のおもちょ王国、等など。

少しもっと近場に、負けないぐらいな遊び場も沢山あります。お客様に良く聞かれますので、私ども家族の気に入りの一つを紹介します：

戸倉宿キティパーク。

戸倉駅の上にある、でかい天狗の象があるから「天狗公園」とも呼ばれている。
４月中旬は櫻の木で花見スポットとなる。
一年中はミニ・ミニ動物園がある。羊とヤギと実際にだっこが出来るうさぎがいる。
うちの子供達が一番好きなのは遊具です。無茶苦茶長い滑り台と無茶苦茶高い縄の塔。かなり怖いＺｉｐｌｉｎｅ。等など。
公園全体が斜面になっているので遊具なくても、その斜面に走ったり、コロコロしたりするだけでも楽しめる。

亀清旅館から車で約１０分。

Our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada, is fortunate to have so many kid-friendly destinations around. Some of the most popular are the Kids Ninja Village in Togakushi, the Snow Monkey Park at Jigokudani, the Chausuyama Zoo in Shinonoi, and Kodomo-oukoku in Karuizawa.

But quite often, guests often ask about play spots right in the onsen town itself. I recently took our kids to one of them:

Togura-juku Kitty Park

Located above Togura Station, this area is also known as Tengu Park as it is home to a massive tengu (Japanese goblin) statue. In mid-April, the park's cherry blossom trees attract hundreds of flower-viewing revelers. The park also features a mini-mini zoo, with rabbits you can pet and sheep and goats.

For our kids, their favorites are the extra-long slide, and the extra-tall rope tower. There's also a zipline and other jungle-gym type play toys, too.

Then again, the whole park is built on a steep slope, so kids have fun simply running across the slope or rolling down it.

Tengu Park is a close, 10-minute drive from Kamesei Ryokan.

先日は戸倉上山田温泉の荻原館の若旦那が結婚しました。町中がお祝いしました。こうやってまたもう一つの宿の後継が確定となりました。町の皆は結婚したお二人の為にはもちろん、嬉しいですが、温泉の重要な宿はこれで安定となって、それこそ嬉しいです。

そして、今度は１９日にホテル晴山の若旦那、亮君が結婚しました。同じように、亮君と智恵実さんの為に嬉しいですが、更にもう１人の若旦那の支えてくれる人が来て、もう一つの後継が確定となって、なお嬉しいです。

亮君達に披露宴で私にとっては大きな事がありました。私と亮君が旅館組合青年部で何年間で一緒に活動しております。この２年間は私が順番的に青年部長となっている訳。青年部長の使命、披露宴の挨拶を頼まれました。大きな大きな役割です。緊張しながら、何とかしました。緊張したけど、正直って、ちょっと嬉しかったです。

When the young master of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's venerable Ogiwara-kan got married last week, everyone in town celebrated. Of course we are happy for the newly-wed couple, but we are also happy another inn's next generation has returned to continue the business.

Now, on the 19th, the young master of Hotel Seizan got married. Everyone is happy for Ryo and his new wife Chiemi. We are also elated yet another inn has a stable future.

This wedding reception was a major milestone for me, personally. Ryo and I have worked together on so many events over the years as members of the town's ryokan junior association. As the current leader of the association, it was my obligation and privilege to give the opening speech for the reception. I was a bit nervous but managed to pull it off.

Ryo-kun, Chiemi-san, I wish you all the best!

ホテル晴山 Hotel Seizan

戸倉上山田の女将の会の皆さんは小石（恋し）の湯の伝説を記念するモニュメントを作って、カラコロ足湯の公園に設置する事になりました。デザイナーの佐藤さんの作品となります野で、本人は今、必死で作業しています。

デザインはお楽しみに。

The Ladies Guild here at our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada decided to build a monument in honor of our local legend, the Koishi no Yu story. They have contracted with a local designer, Satoh-san, to build the monument in a corner of the main park in our town, near the Kara-Koro footbath.

Satoh-san is busy working on the new monument, which is sure to be yet another destination spot for visitors to our onsen town.

９月９日に戸倉上山田温泉の荻原館の若旦那、健太君が結婚しました。荻原館の四代目となる健太君との奥さん、おめでとうございます。戸倉上山田の皆が応援しています。

こうやってもう一つの仲間宿の後継がちゃんとできて、嬉しい限りです。

披露宴に地元の冠着太鼓の演奏も。これが我が温泉の伝統の一つです。健太君のお父さんも、打ちました。格好良い！

On September 9th, the oldest son of fellow Kamiyamada Onsen ryokan Ogiwarakan got married. Kenta will be the 4th generation owner of Ogiwarakan. Everyone in our onsen town is excited for the newlywed couple. It's great that yet another inn has its son come back to take over.

During the reception, our local taiko group, Kamuriki-daiko, performed. Kenta's dad made a guest appearance, too.

荻原館Ogiwarakan

上山田温泉を守る波閉科神社の年に一度の祭りは中秋際です。２０１２年は９月２３日に行う予定。朝から上山田神楽保存会が町中を回って、祭りの役員のご自宅や、新築お祝いなどで獅子舞をやり、別な行列が朝に出発して、神社に辿り着いて、午後からは相撲大会。夜９時ぐらいになって、獅子がやっと神社に到着して、役員の行燈の光で最後の獅子舞をやる。神秘的なフィナーレです。

私がお神楽の獅子笛をやっていますのでメンバーと一緒に中秋際を向かって毎週木曜日に必死で練習しています。今年は私が大人しく一日で獅子笛をやる予定です。

しかし、数年前の中秋際、亀清旅館の板長が相撲担当だったので、「タイラーさん、お相撲、人数が足りない」と言ってきました。その後は、歴史でした。良かったら、下記のリンクにてのビデオをご覧になって下さい。

Habeshina Jinja is the main shrine looking over Kamiyamada Onsen. Once a year, on the autumnal equinox, the shrine holds its Fall Festival. For 2012, it will be Sunday 23-Sept. The Okagura lion dance troupe makes a procession around town during the whole day, stopping to perform at the residences of the various festival elders. A separate procession works it way and arrives at the shrine around noon, whence a sumo tournament begins. At around 9pm, the lion dance troupe finally arrives at the shrine for the moving grand finale -- a lion dance by lantern light.

I happen to be a member of the lion dance troupe -- I play the flute. We have been practicing every Thursday in preparation for the big festival. This year I will be joining the procession for as much of the day as my innkeeper duties allow.

But in a previous year, Kamesei Ryokan's chef was one of the festival elders in charge of the sumo wrestling. He came to me and said, "Tyler, we don't have enough sumo wrestlers." And, as they say, the rest was history. Take a gander at the video in the link below.
