ミシュランガイドの編集の方に戸倉上山田と千曲市のＰＲをしてきました。渋湯田中温泉の公民館で、１０分間の勝負でした。千曲市の看板川：千曲川と名物山：姨捨山を紹介してから戸倉上山田温泉との芸者の文化の話しました。それで武さんと春駒さんが「千曲小唄」の踊り・歌をしました。ミシュランの方が感動したようで写真も撮りました。そして、姨捨山にも興味があって、「年よりは本当に捨てられてたか？」と聞きました。「お墓は沢山あるし、行けばゴーストが出るよ」と答えたかったが、市役所の方もいましたから正式的の答えをした：７６８年に日本全国の親孝行のトップ９人の内の一人が更級郡の人で、「姨捨山」の伝説が親孝行の話なのでそのつながりが出来たそうです。
まあ、これで二星ぐらいかな？:) (メンションさえされたら嬉しい！）
Today was the big day to make our 10 minute presentation on Togura Kamiyamada Onsen and Chikuma City to the Michelin Guide Japan editor. I talked about our namesake Chikuma River and our famous 'Obasute' mountain, and then explained about our onsen's history and the geisha heritage. Takeshi and Harugoma, two of our most talented geisha, then performed 'Chikuma Ko-Uta' with dance and song and shamisen. I think the editor was impressed, as he took a picture of the dance. He also asked about the Obasute legend -- were old people really thrown away at the mountain? I wanted to answer "Of course! There are lots of graves up there, and ghosts, too!" But a couple of guys from City Hall were there, too, so I had to stick with the official reply: in the year 768, a local man was selected as one of the Top 9 people in Japan for filial piety. As the legend's theme is also filial piety, the connection was made.
I thought the presentation was good for at least two stars. 🙂 (We'll be lucky to even get mentioned!)

今朝は亀清が静かだったから久しぶりに朝市に参加できました。毎週日曜日の朝６時半から、戸倉上山田温泉の真ん中の公園で行います。私は布団上げがあった為に３０分しか参加できませんでしたが、昨日に焼いた手作りクッキーを売りました。日曜日の朝市と金曜日の夕市の皆様がこの温泉を盛り上がろうとしているので私も応援したいと思っています。口だけで応援するのではなく、こうやって朝早く起きて、自分で作ったクッキーを宿泊のお客様に販売するという形になる応援です。町興しというのは行政に任せたり、人にやってもらったりするのではなくて、自分自身が動かないと町興しにならない。「面倒くさい」「そんな時間が無い」などの悪の考えに負けないように頑張りましょう！
Kamesei Ryokan was a little quiet this morning, so I woke up early and went to the Sunday Morning Market to sell my home-made cookies. People talk about the town needs to do this, or people need to do that, but I try to be a do-er, not a talk-er. Getting my butt out of bed early and selling the cookies I baked myself at the market is how I try to help make the town a livelier place.

一つな文句があります:日本は電気工事や電話線工事などに対して厳しい制限が色々ある。つまり、免許がないと仕事はしちゃいけない。でも私が何度もプロの失敗したところを直している。今日もそうでした。７年前にプロの設備屋さんが詰まったトイレをルーターしてくれたがまた詰まりそうになった。今回はルーターを頼まないで原因を追求して、木の根っこの入り込んでいる皹を見つけた。自分で配管をやり直しておいた。何でプロがそこまで努力しない？！？！
I have a pet peeve: Japan has restrictions on non-licensed people doing electrical, phone line, and other work. But I find myself having to fix all kinds of mistakes by the licensed 'pros'. Today was a case in point. 7 years ago we called a pro plumber to fix a plugged toilet. All he did was router it. Today we had to work on the same toilet, and I did a little searching and found a crack in the drain pipe where tree roots were getting in. So I re-laid new pipe around the problem point. Why didn't the pro do that in the first place?!?!

じゃらんネットの口コミで最近に「亀清旅館がぼろぼろだけど安いから仕方がない」の様に書かれました。確かに、設備投資が大変遅れて、建物の古さが感じます。（大半のお客様が亀清の昔ながらの木の作りの温もりで落ち着き、「何も変えないで」と言いますが。。。）
お客様の喜びの為に純情に直してはいます。今週は２階の客室のベランダの床を取りかえった。私が古いカーペットを外して処分して、業者に取り付けてもらいました。（やはりお客さんが使うところはプローに頼まないと。）来月はメインのトイレの改造。庭はすでに磨いていっています。お客様の喜びを得れるように。でも、これだけ言わせて下さい：亀清が綺麗になっても、値上げはしない。この改造はお金の為じゃない。心の事です。おもてなしの心。
We recently got a customer comment to the effect that Kamesei's buildings are old, but it's cheap so it can't be helped. Our buildings are old and decrepit, and are sorely needing repair. (However, the majority of our guests like the wood construction and ask us to leave everything as it is...) But we are gradually making improvements. This week we put new carpet in the verandahs of several guest rooms (I did the removal but we had a pro do the install). Next month we will completely remodel the main bathrooms. And all this year we are re-doing the gardens. All of this to give our guests a better experience.
But I do want to say one thing: even after we make all the improvements, we aren't going to raise the rates. It's not a matter of money, but of heart!

五日間以内に総会４つも合って、やはり疲れるよね。これが若旦那の世界です。国際交流協会、商工会青年部、旅館青年部、そして今日は県の旅館青年部の総会。日帰りで菅平にて。我が戸倉上山田温泉から約１時間です。冬はスキーで夏はラグビーで国立公園の為に夜のラーメン屋さんとかがなく、でも根子岳や沢山の良い山があってまたトレッキングで来たい。菅平の若旦那達、頑張って下さい！
4 General Meetings in 5 days -- Uff Da! That's the life of an innkeeper. Today's was the Nagano Prefecture Ryokan Junior Innkeepers Assoc., held in the ski / rugby resort of Sugadaira. I want to come back and hike some of the area's mountains, especially Nekodake. Anyways, here's wishing my fellow innkeepers in Sugadaira good luck!

今週は総会が四つもあります。今日は千曲国際交流協会の分でした。イベントの活躍のお陰（？）で私は本年度から副会長になりました。協会の皆様と力を合わせて頑張りたいと思っておりますので宜しくお願いいたします。
This week I have to attend four different Annual Meetings. Today's was for the Chikuma Int'l Exchange Assoc. Yours truly has been selected as Vice Chairperson. I am looking forward to working closer with the group!

「戸倉上山田温泉のネオン」を２週間ぶりぐらいに見えた。シアトルへの里帰りから帰ってきました。やはり、このネオンを見れば落ち着きます。
Tonight was the first time to see the Togura Kamiyamada Onsen neon in almost two weeks. We just got back from our trip to Seattle. The neon seemed to say, "Welcome Back".

The main purpose of our trip back to Seattle was to spend time with the family. Here we are with my parents and youngest brother and his wife and kids. (My middle brother is in Hawaii and couldn't be here.) I promised my parents when we decided to move to Japan to start helping out at Kamesei Ryokan that I would come back once a year with the kids to see them. I feel guilty for leaving the inn for a week, but this was part of the deal.
今回のシアトルの旅の主の目的はつまり親孝行です。長男の私がこの亀清旅館を後継ぐ為に親から離れちゃった者で、年に一度会う約束した訳です。ハワイイにいる真ん中の弟以外のリンチ家の集まりが出来ました。

When I made the decision to move to Nagano to help out here at Kamesei Ryokan, I promised my parents I would go home to Seattle once a year to see them. Today, my wife and kids and I are flying out for this year's trip. I am especially looking forward to showing them are little daughter Misaki walking.
Once in Seattle, I plan on continuing this blog, commenting on what kinds of cross-cultural dynamics I find. Stay tuned!
亀清旅館の後継ぐ事を決めた時に、親に年に一度里帰り約束した。今日はその為に家族の皆で飛びます。我が娘が一才になったばかりでその歩き出している姿を見せたくて。。。

One of our guest rooms had a leaky sink. In my attempt to repair it, I managed to crack the porcelain. So I went ahead and updated the whole thing, with a cool ceramic bowl, a stylish faucet, and a nice, wood countertop. If guests like it, I plan on updating more bathrooms in the future.
あるお客室の辛苦が水漏れしていました。直してみたら、ひびが入っちゃった。仕方が無い：全部を新しくしました。陶芸なボールを使って、ちょっとしたお洒落な雰囲気になりました。
