戸倉駅から亀清まで歩いてきたお客様に「千曲川を渡ったときに、とってもいい香りしましたが、どこから着たでしょうか?白い花が沢山あったが、その花から?」と聞かれました。自分で見に行きましたら、吃驚しました。川辺のアカシアの木が伸びて、アカシアの白い花が沢山あった。
今日は夕方に子供たちが学校から帰ってきて、軽トラで川辺へ連れて行きました。我が旅館からたった3,4分でこういうアカシアの花王国に行けて、楽しかった。子供たちも大喜び。川と山で恵まれている戸倉上山田温泉だからこそ出来る楽しみです。
花を少しもらって、亀清にもって帰りました。一部は板長に渡しました。今度はお客様にアカシア花の天ぷらを作ってくれるそうです。残りの花は女湯の露天風呂になんちゃった生け花で飾りました。2,3日しか持たないだろうけど、その間はお客様に楽しんでいただけるかな?
A couple of our guests walked to Kamesei from Togura Station. They asked me, "When we crossed over the Chikuma River, there was a lovely scent in the air. Was it coming from all of those white flowers?" Hmm. What flowers? I went to go check it out, and was surprised to see that the acacia trees along the river bank had grown and where covered in white flowers. Ah ha! That's where the scent is coming from.
After our kids got home from school, I piled them in our "K-Truck" mini pick-up and we went for a drive down to the river bank. It was amazing that a short 3,4 minute drive could take us to such an acacia flower paradise. The kids loved it! This type of fun can only be possible in a place like Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, blessed as it is by the river running down the middle and surrounded by all the green mountains.
I brought a few branches with flowers back to Kamesei. Our chef will use some to make acacia flower tempura for our guests. And I used the rest to make some sort of ikebana arrangement for one of our outdoor baths. Acacia flowers don't keep long, but hopefully our guests will be able to enjoy them for a couple of days.

夏祭りの第一歩 私には初めての一歩 First Step for the Summer Festival (and my first time for it, too)

今年の上山田温泉夏祭りは7月17日(土)と18日(日)の予定です。我が温泉の一番大きいイベントです。準備は既に始まっています。観光協会がポスター作成を進んでいて(良く見れば、亀清の若女将も映っている!)、祭典取締役が決められて、そして私が入っている獅子の役員の打ち合わせは夕べ行いました。
今度の夏祭りは私の5回目です。一回目は祭典係りになりましたが、その後はずっと獅子でした。正確に言えば、獅子の中にいました。「どっこいどっこいどっこい!」と叫びながら、順番で獅子の頭に入って、獅子の外の若連を倒そうとする役割でした。精一杯気合を入れて、最高に楽しんだ。
そして、今年の祭は私が黒い法被を着て、獅子の外になっちゃう。倒される方って事。歳は歳だし(今年は40歳になる!)、身長はどうも合わないし、獅子の外に行かされた。
嬉しいような、まだ一度も外の若連を倒すことが出来なかった悔しいような、今度は私が倒されちゃう心配のようなところでございます。
まあ、迫力のある祭なので、我々獅子は日曜日のお昼から温泉街を回っていますので是非、見に来てください。

Kamiyamada Onsen's big Summer Festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday July 17th and 18th. This will be my 5th year to participate in the festival since moving here. The first year, I was on the festival organizing committee. Since then, I have been in the huge shishi lion. So far, it's always been on the inside, where we take turns inside the head and try to knock over the black happi coat wearing "handlers" on the outside. Well, this year, do to a combination of my age (I'll be 40 this year!), and my height (I never really managed to squat down low enough to properly do the shishi), I am getting booted out and will be one of the "handlers" myself. I am a bit excited, a bit disappointed ('cuz I never did manage to actually knock anyone over yet, and will never have the chance again), and a bit worried about getting knocked over.
Last night, the handlers and the other people in charge held our first "meeting" in preparation of the shishi for this year's festival. It's a huge, energetic deal -- if you get a chance, definitely come and see it!





ジェラートの日 A Gelato Day

静かなGW後の土曜日と言う事で、たまっていた仕事をやる様にしました。薪ストーブの薪割りや焚きつけ準備の日でした。うちの子供たちにも手伝ってもらった。終わったら、皆と戸倉上山田温泉のジェラート屋さんPatisserie L'avenir
に行きまして、美味しいジェラートを食べました。青い空と新緑の周辺の山で、気持ち良い「お疲れ様ジェラート」。

'Tis a quiet post-Golden Week Saturday, so I used the free time to catch up on some projects I had been neglecting. I cut up and stacked a bunch of kindling as well as worked on chopping firewood for our wood burning stoves for next winter. Our kids helped me out, so after the hard work we went to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's Patisserie L'avenir for some gelato. Blue sky, surrounding mountains in their spring green colors, and yummy gelato -- a fitting way to top off a day of hard work.

初めての北海道 First time in Hokkaido

旅館青年部の全国相識に出向していますが、毎年にどこか面白い所に出向者セミナーが開くみたい。去年は北九州でしたが、私の予定が合わなくて行けなかった。今年は私が入っている部会が発表したし、行かない訳に行かなかった。場所は:札幌。
と言う訳で、北海道に始めて行きました。本当は松本空港から飛びたかったが、毎日じゃないので仕方がなくて、羽田から。結局は札幌市内しか見られへんかった。北海道の「大自然」はまだ知らなくて残念。でも、札幌の街は沢山の公園があって、所々に明治時代の建物があって、尚且つ、道の全部は順番が付いていて分かりやすかった。
そして、セミナーで井門先生の「半宿、半X」の話し、つまり、旅館は生き残る為に今までの宿泊スタイルだけじゃ駄目だと、趣味を生かして、個性を出して行かなきゃいけないという講演は良い刺激になりました。

Since I've joined the national Ryokan Junior Association, I've found out that once a year they hold a seminar in an unusual place. Last year it was in northern Kyushu, but I couldn't attend due to a scheduling conflict. This year, it was in Sapporo, and as the research group that I am a member of was giving the presentation, I was obligated to go.
So, for my very first time, I went to Hokkaido. You can fly from Matsumoto Airport, but the service isn't daily, so I had to go into Tokyo and fly from Haneda Airport instead. I never got to see Hokkaido's wild expanses of nature, just downtown Sapporo. However, with its many parks and a handful of Meiji-era buildings dotting the city, not to mention the numbered streets(!), I enjoyed the little bit of time I had to sightsee.
And the keynote speech by Ikado-sensei on rethinking the traditional ryokan business model by adding side project based on the owners hobbies, was very inspiring!

旅館青年部県総会@駒ヶ根 Back-to-Back General Meetings

発表タイム@県青年部総会w/峯竜太と斉藤章雄講師and宮原部長

この時期は旅館青年部の総会が次から次へ行います。先週は国レベルの総会@東京、今日は県レベル@駒ヶ根、明日は戸倉上山田温泉の@再生で頑張っている宿「若の湯」。(今日の新聞で「廃業」って書いてあったが、明日は若の湯で総会を開くぐらい廃業じゃない!)

長野県の総会は南信を代表ができる「二人静」と言う宿で行いました。恥ずかしい事ですが、宿名は花からじゃなくて、カップルさん用なブティック旅館をイメージしました。実際は大手なホテル形式な宿で吃驚しました。しかし、スタッフの笑顔や、自然を生かした露天風呂が良かった。
総会の一部は我々青年部が開発している「まぁーず」と言うソースの紹介でした。その為に、一流Chefの斉藤章雄先生と南信出身の芸能人、峯竜太さんの公園がありました。講演会のMCは、なんと、私になりました。何でこの下手の日本語の人になるのだろう?うんと緊張しました。まあ、失敗しながら、何とかできました。最後は宴会で楽しいメンバーの港ビールを美味しく頂きました。
(本来ならば、このブログで信州の魅力を紹介していますが、今日はつまらない内容ですみません!)

Normally I use this blog to introduce various interesting places about Nagano, Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, and our inn here, Kamesei Ryokan. Today's topic, though is a little boring: an update on my ryokan junior association activities. 'Tis the season for annual general meetings. Last week was the national one in Tokyo, today was the prefectural one in southern Nagano's "flagship" ryokan, "Futari Shizuka" in Komagane, and tomorrow is Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's -- our local chapter.

At the prefectural one today, I had to MC for a couple of speech presentations by a top chef (Akio Saitoh) and a TV celebrity from the local area, Mineh Ryuta. Needless to say I was a bit nervous, but that made the beer at the banquet afterwards all the more delicious!

昨日は松本、今日は東京、あちらこちらに会議に出回っています。今日の会議は全旅連青年部の総会でした。私が「宿レシピ」という研究部会に入っていまして、その研修会を兼ねて総会にも参加しました。部会では宿と周辺の農家などとの取り組みを研究している。全国の旅館からの旅行者が喜ばれている事例を集めて、他の宿が真似の出来る案を作る目的です。
松本の会議はインバウンド関係です。SCOPという研究室が上高地の魅力をどうやって外国人観光客にPRができるかという事で、私と長野インバウンドサミットのKenさんが呼ばれて、相談に乗りました。
あちらこちらに飛んでいるが明日は会議は何の予定もない!その分、「牛に引かれて善光寺」の準備が溜まっていて・・・
Yesterday was Matsumoto, today Tokyo. I'm going all over the place for meetings lately. The meeting in Tokyo today was the national Ryokan Association's junior members annual meeting. The research group that I am a member of held another discussion session in conjunction with it. We are researching ways in which ryokans can combine forces with local farmers and other groups to make staying at our inns more enjoyable for our guests.
The Matsumoto meeting was with SCOP, a thinktank researching ways to better publicize Kamikochi to travellers from abroad. Myself and my Nagano Inbound Summit sidekick Ken-san were called in to give advice.
After all of this travelling, tomorrow I have absolutely no meetings scheduled. Does that mean a day off? No! I have to get cracking on preparations for the annual Zenkoji walk! Aaaargh!

My Activities Report for the Yado Recipe Research Group

里帰りから帰ってきて、イースターのイベントや色んな会議があって、宿題がたまっています!(このブログの更新もそうだし!)その中で、平成21・22年度は私が旅館組合の全国組織に出向しているので、21年度の活動報告が一番ピンチ。海外に行っていた時に、上司から連絡があって、「早くしろ」と。まあ、やっと書きましたのでせっかく書いたからこのブログにも載せさせていただきます。興味のある方、どうぞ、お読みになって下さい。

After getting back from our trip back to Seattle, I've been slammed with one meeting after another, as well as with putting on our town's Easter Egg Hunt. I've got so much homework stacking up, it's starting to come out my ears! The most urgent was to write a report on my activities for fiscal year 2009 with the ryokan association at the national level. I am part of a research group focusing on ways to get ryokans more involved with the local communities. For example, normally tourism people focus only on tourism, and agriculture people only on agriculture. And for us hotels, even though there are farms nearby, if we can save 1 yen and buy from the produce market instead, we will. As for the farmers, if they can sell to the market for 1 yen more than we will buy, they will. In other words, there is a huge gap between the hotels and the farms. My group's project is to find ways to bridge that gap -- to make both sides realize they are members of the same community. One example of a mutually beneficial relationship was from our group's leader, a ryokan owner in Niigata Prefecture. In his project, the inn proprietresses actually got into the fields with farmers and helped with planting, and then later with harvest. They bought the 2nd grade material that normally would have been thrown away and made caramel confectionary sweets with them. Not only did the inns get the produce at discount prices, but the growers got an outlet for their unusable product. And on top of that, the innkeepers and farmers got to know each other, and the whole project got much favorable press.
Using inspiration from that story, this past fall, our inn started a relationship with a local grape grower for the first time, with me personally going to the orchard and buying hail-damaged but delicious-tasting grapes to provide as dessert for our guests. It's a small step towards closing the gap between farmers and inns here in Kamiyamada, but one that I hope to build on in fiscal 2010!





Back in Japan 日本に帰国

シアトルへの里帰りから日本に無事に帰国。成田への飛行機は10時間も乗って、そして時差ボケの疲れ・・・しんどい!上野で電車を乗り返った時に、上野公園でちょっと休憩しました。桜が満開でした。花見の皆さんでにぎやかでしたが、私達はとにかく、早目に亀清に戻って、温泉に入りたがっていた。花よりお風呂!

We arrived back in Japan tonight after our trip home to Seattle. The plane ride to Narita took 10 hours. That plus the jetlag meant we were pretty exhausted. When changing trains in Ueno, we popped up to Ueno Park to see the famous cherry blossoms, which were in full bloom. The park was lively with the hanami revelers. There's a saying in Japanese about such cherry blossom viewing parties being more for the dango (sticky rice sweets, i.e., the partying) than the blossoms. For us, all we could think about was getting back to Kamesei and soaking in the onsen.

我々は2年ぶりにシアトルに戻ったということで、私の家族の皆が集まってくれました。私の身長は2メーターと言うことで、日本でとっても目立ちます。まあ、アメリカでも目立つのだ。しかし、うちの家族が集まれば、普通になります。家族の集まりの写真を提供しますので、どうぞ、私のルーツをご覧になって下さい。
As it was our first time back in Seattle for 2 years, all of our family got together for a mini-reunion. When I'm in Japan, my 6'7" height really stands out. It even stands out while walking around in America. But when I'm surrounded by my family, my height really blends in. By seeing these pictures, I think you will see where I get my height from!
