この頃は亀清のそれぞれの庭の木をチョキチョキしています。沢山の庭があって、木は数えれない多いから、凄い作業になっている。

客室「夕映」の庭に大きなモミジの木がある。梯子に上って、枝とトリミングしていたら、鳥の巣を見つけました。嬉しいね！亀清旅館の庭は小鳥に愛されて。

やはり、亀清の庭を大事にしなくていけない。お客様の為のはもちろんだが、鳥の為にも。

Lately I've been working on trimming Kamesei Ryokan's many trees. We have so many gardens, and hence so many trees, I can't even count them all. But an innkeeper's job is never over -- after the guests check out and before the next guests check in, you'll likely find me up in the trees.

When I was trimming the branches of the Japanese maple outside of guestroom 'Yubae', I spotted this little birds nest. How cute!

It was a reminder of how important it is to take good care of Kamesei's gardens -- not just for the pleasure of our guests, but for our fine feathered friends as well!

亀清旅館の新しい貸切露天「しなの風呂」の庭に様々な花と植物、木が植えてあって、何が何かわかる様に庭師の岡田さんが花マップを作ってくれました。今度は夏・秋バージョンが出来た。

このマップのお蔭でどの花が咲いているか分かる。例えば、今はちょうど紫の花の植物は２つが咲いている:

Kamesei Ryokan's new private onsen bath "Shinano-buro" has a garden that features a wide variety of flowering plants and trees. Our gardener, Okada-san, made a flower map of the garden so our guests can keep track of what flowers when.

The Summer / Fall version just arrived, and just in time. Two plants with purple flowers are in bloom now:
Serratula coronata var. insularis
and
Geraniumu soboliferum

今週末、7月14日・15日はこの戸倉上山田温泉の夏祭りです。その準備は色んな形になりますが、一つは亀清の周りのブロック塀の壁ははげて来ていたのでどうしても塗りなおしたかった。夜鍋の作業になってしまったが、ずくを出して昨日はやっておきました。

小さい事ですが、温泉夏祭りにお越しになる皆様の為にちょっとしたおもてなしでございます。

This upcoming weekend, July 14th and 15th, is our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada's big summer festival. All over town preparations are being carried out. Here at our inn, Kamesei Ryokan, I had been concerned about the paint peeling off some of the concrete block walls around our entrance. So yesterday I took advantage of the sunny weather, stripped the old paint, applied a layer of sealer, and painted the walls. It took me until about midnight, but I got it done.

Hopefully the guests who will come to our town for the festival will appreciate the new paint!

Kamesei Ryokan's Kids Plate is a mix of Western and Japanese cuisine. Here's the menu:

And, in addition, miso soup.

並び方、向き、照明の光、お客様の顔を見ながら色々と計算して布団引きは毎日やっております。（一番難しいのは布団と布団の間の幅はどれだけ空くか）

６年半の経験で、それなり上手になってきたとの事でしょうかね。布団の文化じゃないアメリカから来た者で「布団引きが芸術的だ」と言われたら、ちょっと嬉しいですね。

In a recent review we received from a guest, there was a compliment about my futon flipping skills:
'The Proprietor's Futon Flipping Was Artistic.'

While keeping in mind the particulars about each guest, I am always careful about how I arrange the futons, which direction they face, even the lighting in the room. The most difficult part is always figuring out how much space to put between the futons for couples. 🙂

I've been flipping futons every day now for 6-1/2 years. All of that experience must be paying off. Coming from America where we we have beds instead, I was thrilled to hear my futon flipping skills are getting so artful.

亀清旅館の中庭に小さな蔓植物があります。藤かな？と思います。このGWの連休にその藤の為に棚を作ってあげました。ロビーの窓沿いで作りまして、夏は少しでもロビーに影を与えると。自然なさわやさ。

連休はお陰様で我が宿が賑やかでしたけど、会議がなかった分で仕事の合間でこの藤棚を作れました。

今度亀清にお越しになる時に新しく作った棚をぜひ見て、またご意見を下さい。

In Kamesei Ryokan's 'naka-niwa' central garden, we have a wisteria-like vine growing. During the Golden Week holiday, I made a new trellis for it. I built it along the top of the lobby's windows. Hopefully the vine will provide shade for the lobby during the heat of the summer.

Even though our inn was bustling with guests during the Golden Week holiday, thanks to not having any meetings scheduled I was able to find time to make the garden trellis.

My hometown, Seattle, is a mecca for microbrews. So for me, the Budweisers and Asahis of the world don't quite do the trick. I prefer my beers with more body. Hence I was pleasantly surprised upon moving to Nagano that there are so many high quality craft beer makers here. After extensive (?) research, I found that Shiga Kogen's beers have the fullest flavor for the best price, and come in bottles.

When you come and stay at Kamesei, how about trying our Microbrew sampler set? And please let me know which variety you like the best. (Personally, being 1-quarter Irish, the darker and sludgier the better. The porter is my favorite.)

亀清旅館のロビーに出来たキッズコーナーに長野パイン材のおもちゃ以外に、「気を伝えてくれる物語」という長野の絵本シリーズは3部を置きました。

緑で恵まれている長野からこそ生まれた絵本です。その自然が教えてくれるストーリーの本。村のおじさんが語っているような文章。「太一は松の所へ行ってな　焼けた幹にそおと触ってみたんじゃ」の様な書き方。私は大好き！子供に読むのに楽しそう。

取り敢えず、「気が伝える物語シリーズ」で揃った3部は：

「太一と夜泣き松」　大鹿村
「おおまきの唄がきこえる」　阿智村
「うえんじいさまのき」　塩尻市贄川地区

For Kamesei Ryokan's new Kids Corner in the lobby, besides a collection of wooden toys we also have some new childrens books. The 3 books are from a series sponsored by a Nagano nature conservation group and they are stories about various landmark trees in the prefecture.

The "Ki ga Tsutaete kureru Monogatari" (roughly tranlated means "stories conveyed by trees") series is dedicated to raising awareness in children about the importance of trees. They are written in a very approachable style of an old man from a country village telling a tale. I love the easy-going nature of the prose.

The three books we have collected are:

"Taiichi to Yonaki Matsu" (Taiichi and the Pine Tree that Cries at Night), set in Oshika Village
"Oomaki no Uta ga Kikoeru" (Listen to the song of the Oomaki", set in Achi Village
"Uenjisama no Ki" (Master Uenji's Tree), about a horse chestnut tree in Shiojiri City.

亀清旅館のロビーに新しいキッズコーナーが出来ました。長野パイン材の本棚とベンチが設置してあります。そこで、沢山の木造玩具があります。以前からあった機関車トーマスの電車セットと、新しく購入した積木、リングトス、糸縫いおもちゃ。お子さんのお客様がいっぱい遊んでくれています。

亀清のロビーが子の木造玩具のお蔭で直賑やかになりました。

We have a new "Kids Corner" in our lobby here at Kamesei Ryokan. New bookshelves and a bench made from Nagano-grown pine trees make up the children's space. For toys, we have a wooden Thomas the train set from before, along with some new toy wooden blocks, a ring toss game, and yarn toys.

The wooden games and toys are proving to be a real hit with our guests' children. Our lobby is now more livelier than ever.

パイン材のおもちゃも購入したので本棚に子供の本も入れて、ちょっとしたキッズスペースになりました。家族向けのパンフも沢山揃いましたし、キッズが喜ばれる長野を紹介しています。

Kamesei Ryokan's lobby has a few new additions: 2 bookshelves and a bench. All are made from pine wood from Nagano Prefecture. All thanks to a grant from the prefecture for child-raising support.

We got some new childrens toys, too, also made of pine wood. Along with a collection of childrens books. And a selection of brochures and pamphlets for family-friendly spots throughout the prefecture. A little corner of our lobby dedicated to showing how fun Nagano can be for kids.
