亀清旅館は先日に日テレに紹介して頂いた。今までの取材の中で「若旦那vs大女将」が大げさに取り上がれた。まあ、テレビだから何でも大げさにするとは思いますが、真面目に受けた方もいらっしゃるようです。こんなコメントを頂きました：

「若旦那さんもう少し女将さんを立て、女将さんの言う通りにした方が良いです。日本のことわざの中に、ごうにきたらごうにしたがえ と言うことわざが有ります。
日本の旅館は女将さんと、亡くなった旦那さんとの歴史でも有るのです。
全て若旦那さんの思う通りにするのは良くないです。特に大きな立て看板を無くしたのは
きっと旅館の経営に響くと思いました。
女将さんをもっと立て、もっと日本らしい旅館にして欲しい。特にアメリカみたいなベッドはいらない
全ての意味を理解して欲しい。
もっと女将さんのいにそうようにして上げて下さいね！」
（名前無し）

どうやって答えればよいか困っていたから、取り敢えずは「すみませんが、ベッドは大女将の要望だった」と。

もう一方でこんなコメントも頂きました:

「タイラーさん、ご無沙汰しております。
以前家内とお世話になりましたSです。
日本テレビでタイラーさんの相変わらずの
奮闘振りを拝見し懐かしくなりメールさせて頂きました。
TVを拝見すると皆さんお元気そうで何よりです。
亀清旅館の顔と言うべき大きな看板を取り去るなどと言う事は考えてもいませんでしたが、無くなってみると確かに立派な松が引き立ち、印象が代わるのには驚きです。
今後は若主人の時代ですから、新しい発想で、社長の気持ちも少しは汲み取りながら奮闘？されますように！」

亀清の玄関の立て看板は存在が大きかった様です。しかしどうですか？現状の雰囲気は写真で見えますが、なくていかがなもんでしょうか？

そして、残念ながら若旦那と大女将の関係はテレビで映ったほどバットルじゃない。二人とも目的は一緒:　お客様が更に喜んで頂けるように亀清旅館をより良い宿に育つ事。

Nihon TV's recent show on Kamesei Ryokan featured the conflict between myself and the boss (my mother-in-law). I thought everyone understood TV always over-dramatizes everything, but at least 1 person took it at face value. We got a comment from some anonymous person blasting me for ignoring the boss's wishes and tearing down the old steel sign in front of our inn. Furthermore, as per the old "When in Rome" saying, I shouldn't try to Westernize the ryokan by adding a bed.

I wasn't sure how to reply, other than saying, "Excuse me, but the bed was the boss's idea.

Unfortunately, the boss and I don't fight as much as TV would want. We both have the same goal: Make Kamesei into an even better inn to create even more enjoyment for our guests.

東京のBMW Motorradとハーレーダビッドソンのライダー30人が信州ツーリングのついでに我が亀清旅館にお泊りになりました。

大型バイク30台の内の数台はサイドカーが付いていて、とにかく皆がでかい！なるべく屋根の下の駐輪スペースを与えたかったけど、外じゃ入りきれなかったからサイドカー付きのBMW2台はロビーの中に入れさせました。何と室内駐輪！大喜び♪

他の皆も驚きました。「ロビーの中まで？バイクのショールームみたい」と。

「そうですよ。亀清旅館はバイクのお客様を大事にしております」と答えておきました。

Last weekend a motorbike group from Tokyo went touring around Nagano and spent the night here at Kamesei Ryokan. 30 BMW Motorrad and Harly Davidson bikes, most 1000cc+. Three were huge BMW's with side cars.

As much as possible, we try to provide covered parking for guests that come by motorbike. However, 30 large bikes definitely pushed our limits. So we had two of the sidecar BMW's pull all the way into our lobby to park. The owners were excited to have indoor parking.

Everybody was surprised -- "Wow -- you let them park IN the lobby? It's like a motorbike showroom!"

Well, we try to take care of our biker friends here at Kamesei Ryokan.

Introducing Kamesei Ryokan's first ever official Wine List! In conjunction with our new Nagano Wine stay plan, we recently expanded our wine selection to feature some of Nagano's high quality wines. So I made this simple wine list to describe our selection to our guests.

Our Nagano Wine plan has already been effective. Guests have been thrilled with the cheese and apricot plate that we provide with this plan. And while some guests have selected our inn for their stay during their Nagano winery tour, others have selected this plan and then included wineries on their itinerary.

亀清旅館は玄関に屋根の下の駐車場があるので、特にバイクの皆さんに喜ばれます。今回は青森から鳥取への帰りでこのライダー4人が亀清にお越しになりました。

二日間で１８５０ｋｍのコースで泊まりはわざわざ亀清旅館。嬉しかったです。尚且つ、ハーリーの音はやはり、格好良い！

Here at Kamesei Ryokan we have sheltered parking right at our entrance. This is espcially popular with guests who come by motorbike. We had a group of 4 'riders' who were touring from the northern tip of Honshu and stopped for a stay at our inn on their way back to Tottori.

1850km in 2 days, and they specifically choose Kamesei for their stopover. We felt honored! And in the morning, we were treated to the sound of the Harley engine -- awesome!

亀清旅館はこの6月に２つの客室のトレイ・洗面台を改造します。テレビ番組のビフォア・アフターみたいに、ワクワクです。工事の結果は楽しみにしている。

工事の開始の時に設計士と現場担当の大工さんと集まって、塩と清酒を振って2礼2ハイ１礼しました。

建物の工事開始時にそういう儀式をするって知っていたけど、改造の時にも行う事、感心しました。参加させて頂いて、嬉しかったです。

June is our slowest month here at Kamesei Ryokan. So we are using the down time to remodel two of our guestrooms. This is an exciting improvement for our inn!

Before the construction started, the architect and the lead carpenter called me in for a simple ceremony. We did a ritual clapping and bowing sequence, followed by sprinkling salt and sake to purify the job site and pray for an injury-free, successful job.

I'd heard of such ceremonies performed when breaking ground on new construction. I didn't realize it was done for remodels, too. It was a privelege to be able to take part!

魔女は顔の疣が取り除かれたって気持ち。

亀清旅館の玄関に馬鹿でかい鉄の看板がありました。本来の顔になるべくの隣の立派な松の木で邪魔でした。鉄は固くて人間にやさしくないし、あの高さは飛行機で来るお客さん（いない！）には良いかもしれませんが、普通な人間の高さとあまりにも合わなくて、どうかとずっと思っておりました。

数年前に私が木造の「亀清旅館」看板を作りました。
自分で手彫りで文字を彫って、
人間にやさしい木で、
人の目線の高さで。

鉄筋の看板を卒業させても良い様に。

先日はやっと鉄筋の看板を撤去する事になりました。業者さんに頼んで、クレーンを使って取り壊してくれました。

これで亀清旅館の外観が大分すっくりしました。立派な松の木が目立っていてよい。もう一つ嬉しいなのは目線が引くなる為上の電線はあまり気にならなくなった。

我が宿は新しい疣なしの顔となりました♪

I feel like a witch who has had a wart removed from her face.

Kamesei Ryokan has always had a huge steel sign out front. Steel is such a cold, hard, unfriendly material. And the sign was uncomfortably tall. Besides, it interfered with the grand Japanese pine tree in front of our inn that by rights should be our inn's symbol.

A few years ago I made a wooden sign for our inn. Wood is such a warmer, more natural material than steel. And my sign's height was at a more normal human eye level.

The oversized steel sign was no longer needed.

The other day, we finally had a company come and remove the steel sign. They brought in a crane, lifted it up, cut it, and took it away.

Now our pine tree is in its rightful proud state, and our friendly wood sign greets guests. One other benefit is that with the wood sign being at a lower spot, it directs the eyes lower and away from the electrical wires overhead.

亀清旅館は「長野産のワインを飲める宿」との事を目指して、準備しています。先日は須坂市の楠ワイナリーをもう一度訪ねました。楠さんご本人と相談して、取り敢えずこの2種類を購入してみました：

シャルドネ
充実した香に、濃縮感の強い風味。果実香とミネラル、抑制の効いバニラやトフィーの香。エレガントかつ熟成して甘い香を放つようになります。
楠ワイナリーのシャルドネは、フレッシュ・アンド・フルーティとは一線を画するワインです。（楠ワイナリーのHPから）
私が飲んでみたら、なんとなく暖炉の前に座ってそのほのおを見ながらゆっくり飲めるような感じがしました。別な世界に運んでくれるという不思議な力のある幻のワインだと思いました。

カベルネs/メルロー
いわゆるボルドーブレンドです。ブレンド比率は年により変ってきますが、各品種のよいところが相乗効果でさらによいワインとなる北信州の赤。単に混ぜ合わせるのはミックスですが、出来るワインが単一品種のワインよりも美味しい高品質のワインになることをブレンドといいます。つまり「１＋１=２」でなければならないのです。（楠ワイナリーのHPから）
私には「短い人生の中で、安いワインを飲むのはどうか」という言われを思い出しました。とにかく、奥深い赤ワインです。亀清旅館のChef武井の拘りの味付けのお料理には、やはり拘りのワインと合います。

Here at Kamesei Ryokan, we are aiming to provide our guests the opportunity to try some of Nagano's best wines. I recently went again to Kusunoki Winery in Suzaka City and sat down with the vintner himself, Kusunoki-san. After discussing Kamesei's style and our chef's cuisine, and taste-testing several of their wines, I purchased the following two to offer to our guests:

Chardonnay 2011
Kusunoki-san describes this white wine as having a mature, strongly concentrated flavor. Full of fruity and earthy aromas with hints of vanilla and toffee. It gives off an elegant and mature sweetness. Kusunoki Winery's Chardonnay paints a picture of 'Fresh and Fruity'.
When I first tried this Chardonnay, I was transported to another time and place. I imagined sitting in a fat, leather sofa beside a fireplace, sipping the wine while watching the flames flicker. Kusunoki Winery's Chardonnay is that powerful, that magical.

Cabernets Merlot 2011
According to Kusunoki-san, this is his Bordeaux blend. The actual ratio of Cabernet Savignon with the other Bordeaux grapes varies from year to year. The strength of each variety complement each other in this Northern Nagano Red. Simply combining varieties results in a mix. In the case of this blend, the result is stronger and the taste more delicious than any of the individual varieties by themselves. With a blend, 1+1=more than just 2.
To me, this Cabernet blend reminded me of the saying "Life is too short to drink cheap wine." Kusunoki Winery's Cabernet Merlot is not for the weak of heart. It is the perfect accompaniment for the heady flavors of Kamesei Ryokan's Chef Takei's culinary magic.

先日は亀清旅館の客室「末広」に泊まったお客様から口コミが入りました。全体的に良かったけど、どうしても気になるのは「客室からの眺め:　２」。1から5点までの2点。

まあ、確かに戸倉上山田温泉は1000～1250mの山々に責められている千曲川の狭い谷にある。どの宿からでもアルプスが見える訳でもない。お客様は何を期待していたか、想像していたか良く分かりませんが、もっと雄大な眺めのご要望だったら温泉地の選択に問題があるのではないかと思いました。

この客室「末広」の庭は数年前まで本当にひどかったです。
奥行き80cmぐらいな狭い坪庭で、
2mぐらいな高さのブロック塀に、
木が一本だった。
尚且つ、その気が伸びてしまって、客室のベランダからは木の幹しか見えなかった。

とにかく、最低な、恥ずかしい庭でした。

それでも、「何階建てのホテルタイプの客室と違って、庭が一応あるからまだ良いよ」と言って下さったお客様がいらっしゃいました。

あれから、コンクリートブロックが嫌いな私がそのブロック塀の上の3分の2を取り壊して、自分で作った織り込んだ木の塀を設置した。風と太陽が通れる様になりました。そして、庭師の岡田さんにお願いして、無理にしてもらってその狭い所に庭を作ってもらった。

ちなみに、私が長野に引っ越ししてから毎年の10月の楽しみの一つは上山田のりんごです。特に昔からの尼酸っぱい「紅玉」という種類。りんご畑で自分の手と採った採りたての紅玉を食べる瞬間が最高です。その尼酸っぱくて美味しい事！

従って、岡田さんにりんごの木を末広の庭に植えてもらった。私の憧れの紅玉。一年目はりんご1個しかできなかった。今年はまだ早いけど、4～5個が出来そう。
そして、木の麓に浅間石を設置して、色んな植物でそのどうにもならない空間を工夫してくれました。

そこまで努力をしなければ、きっとこの間のお客様の「部屋からの眺め」の評価は「１」だったでしょう。「２」でまだ良かったと思わなければならないですね。

まあ、亀清旅館は直す所がまだまだありますが、沢山の改善は既にしたし、これからも継続します。皆様のこれからの応援と指導を是非、宜しくお願い致します。

The garden for Kamesei Ryokan's guestroom "Suehiro" received a "2" for "View from the room" on a recent guest review. Our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada is nestled in a narrow river valley surrounded by 1000-meter hills. No inn here has a view of the Japanese Alps or anything as splendid. So I'm not sure what the guest was expecting, but I sense the problem may have been in his choice of onsen towns.

Suehiro's garden used to be a pathetic embarrassment. It's only about 80cm deep, and was hemmed in by a 2-meter tall concrete block fence. It's only tree had grown so tall that you could only see it's trunk from the guestroom's veranda sitting area.

I absolutely hate concrete block, so I got out the sledge hammer and demolished the top two-thirds of the fence. I replaced it with a woven wood fence that I built myself. Finally wind and sunlight could reach the garden. Then I had our gardener, Okada-san, do the impossible and build a garden in the tiny space.

One of my favorite things since moving to Japan is apple season here in Kamiyamada. Especially the tart Kogyoku variety. I love going to the orchard, picking one of these heritage variety Kogyoku's, and immersing myself in the freshly-picked tartness.

So Okada-san worked his magic, and managed to plant an apple tree in Suehiro's garden for me. My favorite variety -- Kogyoku! (The first year it only bore 1 apple. This year, it looks a bit more promising.) Around the base of the tree, he placed Asama Mountain volcanic rock and made the best of the narrow space with a few other plants and vines.

If we hadn't done all that work on Suehiro's garden, that recent guest probably would have given it a "1". So I guess I should be happy with the "2". We have made a lot of improvements here at Kamesei Ryokan, with even more to come!

集合場所は温泉地の中心にあるカラコロ足湯、
レンタサイクルのママチャリを利用して、
国の重要文化財から穴場的な所まで、
千曲川と周辺の山々の景色を眺めながら、
足湯や温泉まんじゅを楽しみながら、
一時間半ぐらいのコースで、
自転車もこの戸倉上山田温泉が大好きな私が案内します。

11月までの毎週の土曜日で、
先着順で8人まで、
料金は1200円(レンタサイクル代、保険料、饅頭代込）
申し込みは千曲市観光協会もしくは亀清旅館へどうぞ！

Starting this May, I will be leading a cycling tour of onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada every Saturday Morning.

Tours will start at the Kara-Koro footbath in the center of town, departing at 10:30am. 'Mama-chari' rental cycles will be provided.

Lasting for around 1-1/2 hours, the tour will cover everything from Designated National Cultural Treasures to hidden secrets. We will be able to take in the beautiful scenery of the Chikuma River and the surrounding mountains. The tour will also include a footbath stop and each participant will get a manju sweet to eat.
I myself love cycling, and also love Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen, and will be enthusiastically leading the tours.

Tours will take place every Saturday morning from May through November.
Price is 1200 yen, including cost of the rental cycle, insurance, and the manju sweet.
Maximum 8 people per tour, so reserve early!
