一番いけない事をやってしまいみした: お客さんと喧嘩しました。

朝にロビーでお客さんと普通に挨拶をしたら、

「何で朝ご飯に川魚を出す？あれはひどい！」と、いきなり爆発されました。

説得してみました: 「サーモンは定番でしょうけどこの近くに海が無い。戸倉上山田温泉の真ん中に千曲川が流れていて、川魚がこの辺の食文化です。」

お客さんは更にテンションアップ: 「それは知っているけど、誰がそんなまずい物を食う？」

私は負けないで、「地元で愛されています。作ってくれている方が誇りを持って頑張っている。尚且つ、甘露煮はカルシウムがたっぷり入っていて、体に良いですよ。」

今度は、「何日前に作られたか分からないし」と言われました。

そこなんだ: こいつは保存食が分かっていない。これだけ保存食が盛んでいる長野県は長寿で日本一。

亀清旅館は川魚の甘露煮を出し続きます。

尚且つ、謝らないで。

I did the ultimate no-no: I argued with a guest.

When I greeted him in the morning, he barked, "How can you serve kanroni for breakfast? That stuff is awful!"

(Kanroni is a sweet marinate sauce that, in our case, River fish is stewed in.)

I tried explaining, "Normally ryokans serve salmon but we don't have an ocean nearby. Instead, the Chikuma River flows through the middle of our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada. River fish is a mainstay of our local cuisine."

Things started to heat up. "I know that. But who eats that horrible stuff?"

I made another attempt: "Locals love it! And the guy who makes it takes such pride in his work. Besides, kanroni is full of calcium so it is good for you."

Then the guest shot back, "How many days old is that stuff anyways?"

I realized he just doesn't get it. That's the beauty of preserved food. And Nagano, a leader in preserved food, has Japan's longest life expectancy rates.

We at Kamesei Ryokan will continue to serve kanroni.

With pride.

And with no apologies.

亀清旅館のロビーの中庭側にこのかわいいヤモリが遊びに来てくれました。ヤモリ（＝家守）が来てくれたら運が良いですかな？まあ、信州はどれだけ自然で恵まれている家の証拠ですよね。

A little gecko came to Kamesei Ryokan to say "hi". He was climbing a window in our lobby by the 'naka-niwa' central garden. According to one of my Facebook friends, "Gecko is 家守(ヤモリ 'yamori') in Japanese. It means house protector = good to see him hanging around in your property. Don't mess with him. And let him be."

お客様にお礼のメールを送ったら、この剽軽な返事を頂きました:

ご連絡ありがとうございます。
先日に千歳に宿泊したFでございます。久し振りに有意義な時間を過ごせました。
実は何の予備知識もなく予約し参りましので、最初、若旦那にお逢い正直面食らいました。夜、ネット等で経緯を知りました。翌朝の朝食時にその旨を若女将に伝えさらに直接話を伺った次第です。
ここ亀清には日本が本来保ってきた和の雅がまだ残っています。それに洋の良さが合わさり他には無いものを感じます。
それが何がが解りませんが心引かれるのは確かです。
『夜明け前』私も辰野に赴任している関係で日々愛飲しその味を楽しんでいます。それをお話出来ればと思います。
次回は嫁同伴で参りますので宜しくお願い致します。

見る方は「入りたい」と言う気持ちになるのかな?

ちょっと渋いと言うか、暗い様な気がしますが、皆さんはどう思いますか?

亀清旅館の中庭の秋の写真です。この庭は四季の変更を一番よく表現するのではないかと思います。亀清旅館のＨＰを見る皆様の「今」の天気や季節の様子を見せる為に、ライブカメラを設置したいと考えています。

自己満足かな?

Pictured is Kamesei Ryokan's naka-niwa garden and koi pond. I feel this garden best expresses the change of the seasons here at our inn. To give visitors to our website a real-time feel of the weather and season, I am thinking of setting up a live camera feed of the garden onto our website.

Would that be vanity, or a useful tool for guests?

17日の稲荷山蔵開き市に次男を連れて、行ってみました。稲荷山の昔からの土蔵からこういう宝物が出てくるか、期待していました。

予想通りでした。

この面白い道具があった。品物の重量を量る「はかり」。昔は商人は歩いて回って、品物の量り売りの場合はこういうはかりを使っていた。

はかりはキログラムではなく、貫だそうです。
１貫＝3.75kgだそうです。尺貫法は明治から１９５９までメートル法と同時に利用されたようで、それ以降は少なくなって、１９６６に完全にメートル法に変わったそうです。

５００円で歴史をゲットしました。

ただ、どこで飾るか、困っています。とりあえず、亀清旅館のお風呂の入り口にプッチ資料館がございますので、そこで展示する様にしています。

背景に写っている和傘も稲荷山蔵開き市で購入しました。亀清の貸切風呂へ行く入口に置く様にしました。雨の日に貸切風呂へ歩くお客様が使える様に。これも５００円！

もうすでに来年の蔵開き市を楽しみにしています。

On the 17th, I dragged our #2 son to Inariyama for the antiques sale. I was looking forward to seeing what kind of treasures would come out of the nooks and crannies of Inariyama's old storehouses, and I wasn't disappointed.

Pictured are a couple of the items I picked up. Any guess what that item with the hook is? It's a portable scale. Traveling salesmen used to sell some objects by weight and used this kind of scale to measure, not kilograms, but "kan". (1 kan = 3.75kg). Apparently 'kan' were used along side kilograms from the Meiji era until 1959 until being phased out and totally replaced by the metric system in 1966.

A bit of history for only 500 yen!

And the Japanese umbrella in the background was also 500 yen. I put it at the entrance to the path to Kamesei's family bath, for guests to use in the rain.

After discovering these great treasures, I am already looking forward to next year's antiques sale at Inariyama!

亀清旅館のそれぞれの客室のベランダのコーヒーテーブルに新しい物は最近にデビューしました。

どういう事かと言うと、この戸倉上山田の業者さんの特産品を紹介する通販カタログは以前から作っていて
(制作は戸倉上山田カラコロにぎわい協議会；提案者は私）
第三バージョンまで続いてきました。効果を測ったら少しはあったがもっと良い方法があるのかなと言う疑問・不安がありました。生産者の皆さんと私達旅館の代表が話し合って、いろいろやってみた結果は：

ラミネート作戦！

裸でテーブルに置いてあることによって、お客様は自然に手に入り、見て頂くと。

既に葡萄・りんごとまんじゅの注文がこのラミネート作戦のお蔭で入りました。

この新しい取り組みの努力の結果は楽しみだ！

今年の客室改造工事で、
壁は「私はペンキを塗りたい」と大工さん達に言いました。
しかし、大工さんは「ダメです。日本の旅館はペンキが合わない。だが、しっくいを塗るので良かったら一緒に？」と逆に誘ってくれました。

誰がボスかな？と思いました。

まあ、大工さんに従って、生まれてから初めてしっくいの内装をしました。

特徴な道具に特徴なテクニークで、最初は大変でした。その内に少し慣れて来たけど、プロの大工さんにかなわない。

今回の工事は「紅玉（りんご）」というテーマの客間「末広」と「杏」のテーマの客間「千歳」でした。せっかくだったから、大工さんと相談して、想像して、それぞれの木の葉っぱをしっくいに押して、葉っぱの形を残しました。

When we remodelled two of our guestrooms here at Kamesei Ryokan this year, I told the carpenters that I wanted to paint the new walls.

They told me, "No, for a traditional Japanese ryokan, paint won't work 'cuz it's too Western. But we will use 'shikkui' (plaster) and if you want, you can help."

Hey, just who is the boss around here?

Oh well, I deferred to the carpenters and had them show me the special 'shikkui' techniques and how to use the specialized spades and other tools.

It took some getting used to, but I soon got the hang of 'shikkui'-ing. Of course the carpenters were much more proficient than I. As we worked, the carpenters and I talked all about the finer points of 'shikkui', and we stumbled upon a great idea. The two rooms we remodelled have tree-based themes: Suehiro's is the Kogyoku apple tree and Chitose's is the apricot tree. We took leaves from the respective trees and pressed them into the wet shikkui.

今回の改造工事で、一つな和洋室が出来ました。

客間「千歳」にベッドルームが付きました。

明確に言えば、「ベッド台のある部屋」です。畳のベッド台にお布団を引くような形です。「和」がしっかり取り組まれている洋室。

これで床で寝るのはつらいな方が高台で眠れるようになりました。

足の弱いご年配の方は床から上ったりするのはつらい方、
お布団に慣れていないベッド好きな若い方、
どうしても床で寝るのに馴染めない外国の方、
様々なお客様のニーズに合わせて、作らせて頂きました。

ベッドのご要望があれば、是非に予約の時に仰って下さい。この新しく出来た和洋室を喜んで提供いたします。

With our recent remodelling here at Kamesei Ryokan, we created a guestroom with a bedroom. Our regular 10-tatami mat size "Chitose" room now has a Western-styled bedroom attached.

To be precise, the bedroom has a raised platform covered in tatami where we lay out futons for our guests to sleep. So it is a very Japanese "Western bedroom".

Now a wide range of guests can enjoy sleeping on a raised bed:
Elderly with weak legs that have trouble getting up off the floor,
Younger people used to sleeping on beds and not on the tatami,
Guests from overseas who can't get used to sleeping on the ground,
etc.

For anyone who wishes to have a bedroom, feel free to make your request at the time of booking and we will gladly provide Chitose with its new bedroom!

亀清旅館は毎年、少しずつ改造工事を進んでいます。
2年前は客間「松風」の狭いトイレと使っていなかったシャワースペースをリフォームして、シークな木を活かしたインテリアーで広いトイレと洗面台を作り、
前年度は客間「弥生」に広いトイレに軽井沢の別荘のイメージしたデザイナー洗面台を作り、
今年は「千歳」と「末広」の二室を改造した。

両方共はベランダの片側にトイレ、もう片側に洗面台と使っていなかったシャワー室。トイレを使ってから手を洗うのに不便だし、衛生的ではなかった。シャワー室のデッドスペースも気になっていたし。

今回の工事で洗面台をトイレ側に移って、
元の洗面台とシャワー室の間の壁を取っ払って、
ベッドルームを作りました。
従って、「千歳」は和洋室になりました。

取り敢えず、新しいトイレと洗面台の写真。

我が宿は通常の10畳・トイレ付の客室が12室です。この工事のお蔭でその内の6室は洗浄トイレ付になりました。なお、その一つはベッドルーム付きの和洋室となりました。

亀清旅館は昔ながらの良い所をしっかり守りながら、弱い所を段々と改造して、更に良い宿になってきています。まだまだ直す所が沢山ありますが、少しずつ進化してまいります。

Here at Kamesei Ryokan, we are continuing to make improvements on our inn bit-by-bit.
Two years ago, we remodelled our guestroom "Matsukaze", turning it's cramped toilet and un-used shower room into a stylish toilet and sink area with a sheik, dark wood interior design.
Last fiscal year, it was "Yayoi"'s turn. Gone is the tiny toilet, and here to stay is a bright, roomy toilet and designer sink area patterned after a Karuizawa summer home.

This year, we re-made two rooms, "Chitose" and "Suehiro". They both had a toilet on one side of the sitting area, and the sink area with an un-used shower space on the other. After you used the toilet, you had to walk across the sitting area to wash your hands -- not very hygenic.

With this remodel, we moved the sink space next to the toilet. Then we removed the walls separating the sink and shower areas. That opened up enough space to create a bedroom.

We have a total of 12 guestrooms that are 10-tatami mat size with private toilets. Now with this construction, half of them now have been updated with toilets equipped with washlet functions.

Here at Kamesei Ryokan, we still have many, many improvements to make. But we are gradually making progress, all the while honoring the historical parts of our inn. We sincerely hope for all of your continued support.
