日本は全国的に温泉があるけど、その中で「なんちゃった」のもある。上山田温泉は硫黄泉で香りも感覚も温泉らしいお湯です。この間、それの証拠が出来る例がありました。
週末に91歳のお客様が来はって、足が弱い為にロビーからお部屋までは車椅子でした。でも次の日にお帰りになった時にお部屋から歩いてきました。「車椅子は？」と聞いたら、温泉のお陰で歩かれましたと。
もう1つなお客様は珍しいアレルギーがあって、調べたら上山田のお湯の成分が良いと、泊まりに来ました。そうすると、朝に私が布団上げしに行ったらお客様が寝坊していました。聞いたら、普段はアレルギーのせいで夜は2時間おきで起きるけど、温泉のお陰でぐっすりと眠れた。おまけに2泊延長も！
上山田のお湯は何でも効くとは言いませんが、本格の温泉だと自信を持って言えます。

Japan is blessed with onsens all over the country. However, many are of questionable quality. Togura Kamiyamada's is a sulfur hot spring, and is the real deal. We recently had a couple of guests who exemplified just how good our onsen is.
Over the weekend, we hosted a 91-year old lady who had to be wheelchaired from the lobby to her guest room due to weak legs. However, the next morning, she walked to the lobby. I asked about the wheelchair, and she said that thanks to soaking in our mineral bath, her legs felt good enough to walk!
Another guest had a rare allergy. Her research said our onsen would be good for her condition, so she came to stay the night. The next morning when I went to put away her futons, she was sound asleep. Apparently her allergy usually causes her to wake up every two hours, but thanks to our onsen she didn't wake up at all. She even decided to extend her stay 2 nights.
We don't say that Kamiyamada Onsen is a cure-all, but we can say with certainty that it is the real deal.

上山田温泉の本通に以前から亀清旅館の案内板が電柱についていましたが、先日は場所が代わったついでにサインも新しくなりました。宿名を英字で、そして私がデザインした亀のマークも足しました。今度は亀清を探すときに、宜しければこの看板を目印として使ってください。
Along Kamiyamda Onsen's main street, there has been a Kamesei sign on our nearest utility pole. However, the utility company had to move it and so we got a new sign. I had them add our name in English, as well as the turtle ("kame") mark I designed. So now if you are looking for our inn, hopefully this sign will be of help.

亀清旅館の大広間の建物の土壁を直しています。2年前の大雪で痛んでいて、去年の夏に下地を塗ってもらって、この夏は表面を。アルミサイディングを張った方が早いかもしれないけど、私たちはこの大正時代の建物の土壁を大事にして行きたいです。
Kamesei's building with the banquet hall is getting it's earthen wall fixed. The wall was damaged in the snow storm 2 years ago. Last summer, we had the base patches done, and now we are having the surfaced finished. It would be a lot easier just to slap some aluminum siding on it, but we want to preserve the earthen walls of our building as it dates to the Taisho Era.

先月は「千歳」の前の庭が出来、昨日は「末広」の客室の前の庭が完成されました。ガーデナーの岡田さんのお陰で素敵な庭が出来ました。デザイン的に比較的に影の多い千歳の方から移って、割りと明るい末広の方はそれなりの植物とデザインをかけたのでとってもいい感覚です。写真じゃ分かりにくいので是非、見に来ていただきたいと思っております。
Last month, the garden in front of 'Chitose' was completed, and yesterday, Suehiro's got finished. Our gardener, Okada-san, cleverly designed the new garden to be an extension of the first one. Chitose's is fairly shady, and as you move down the corridor, Suehiro's is more open and the choice of plants and the design reflects the sunnier environment. It's something best experienced in person, so please come and have a look!

この写真じゃ分かりにくいかもしれませんが、亀清旅館の玄関の上にツバメの巣があります。最近は小鳥も顔を出してくれています。去年からツバメがこうやって巣をつくりに来てくれています。亀清のおもてなしは鳥まで？
It's probably hard to tell by this picture, but the swallows that built their nest above our entrance door are back this year, and their babies are peaking their little heads out of the nest. I guess Kamesei's hospitality extends to birds, too. 🙂

我が亀清旅館では最近に良く売れているのは「信州牛」のプランです。プランを始まったときに、信州牛はどれくらい手に入りにくいか知りませんでした。あちらこちらに探した結果で良いお店を見つけました。このお陰でこの珍しい物はいつでもご提供が出来ます。パンフを良く見たら、牛に信州りんごを食べさしている事も分かって、信州牛が上手い訳ですね。信州にお越しになれば、この美味しいお肉を是非、トライしてみてください。
One of our most popular menus here at Kamesei Ryokan is using Shinshu-Gyu beef. When we first started offering our local beef, we didn't realize how hard it is to come by. Fortunately, we have succeeded in securing a reliable source, and are able to offer Shinshu-Gyu to our guests on a regular basis. In looking at the brochure, I found out that one reason the steaks taste to good is that Nagano apples are used as part of the feed. Come and try out this local delicacy!

亀清旅館のメインのトイレの改造工事が終わりました。私が内装をある程度決めたので心配でしたが、結構良い結果になりました。なるべく自然な材料（木の腰壁、陶器のシンクなど）を利用しましたのでなかなかおしゃれです。
まあ、トイレが新しくなったから来るというお客様はいないと思います（逆にいれば怖いですね）が、こうやって亀清旅館をちょっとずつ磨いていっています。
Kamesei Ryokan's main toilet's remodel is now complete. I picked out the interior finish, trying to use as many natural materials as possible (wood for the wainscoating, pottery for the sink, etc.). The final result has a nice feel to it.
I don't expect any guests will come stay just because we have a new toilet (in fact, it would be scary if someone did!), but this is just the latest in our efforts to revitalize the inn.

亀清の完成したばかりのメインのトイレはお客様にどういう風に受けられるか分かりませんでした「明るくなった！」とか「広くなった」とかと思いました。が、今日のお客さんの一人は「良い匂い！」と言ってくれました。びっくりしました。腰壁で利用したヒノキのお陰！
When we completed the new toilet here at Kamesei Ryokan, we weren't sure how the guests would react. Maybe "It's a lot brighter now", or "It's more spacious now." However, one of our guests tonight commented "It smells good". Apparently they like the hinoki (Japanese cedar) wainscoating!

お客様のお布団を上げに行ったら、「よく眠れましたか？」といつものように聞きました。そうすると、朝から庭の植物の影が障子で踊っている風景があって、とっても楽しかったと言われました。なるほど！旅館のもう１つなマジックですね。洋風なホテルにない魅力だ！
When I went to put away the futons for some of our guests, I asked as always how they slept. They replied that the shadows of the leaves dancing on the shoji screens was very relaxing. Ahh yes, one more example of the magic of a Japanese ryokan. That is something you can't get a Western-style hotel!

亀清旅館の中庭に大きい鯉は何匹がいます。今朝は若若女将の美咲ちゃんがえさをやりました。ツツジのバックグラウンドで、良い風景でした。子供連れのお客様がいれば、そのお子さん達にえさをよくやってもらっています。子供に楽しい思い出になる。
Kamesei's naka-niwa garden has a pond with several koi in it. This morning, our daughter Misaki fed them. It was so cute, especially with the pretty azalea blossoms in the background.
A lot of times we have guests' children feed the fish for us. The kids really enjoy the experience.
