亀清旅館の新しい「記念プラン」の初めてのお客様：結婚記念日のお祝いでお越しになった工藤さん達です。ケーキか花か陶芸かプリザーブフラワーという特典の中から、ケーキを選びはりました。
実は、このプランは裏の目的があります。もちろん、お二人の結婚祝いの為にもなりますが、その特典によっては地元のお店との取り組みのきかけになる事です。今までの温泉街のやり方は旅館が旅館、商店街が商店街なのでお互いの交流及び連携がなかった。この記念プランは亀清なりの連携作りです。旅館側と商店側の間のギャップを超える為。この結婚記念日のケーキだって、もっと安いケーキ屋さんはいくらでもある。でも、わざと、戸倉上山田温泉の一番ユニークな、頑張っているような、応援したくなるような美味しいケーキ屋さんとの連携しました。
まあ、その裏の目的は良いとして、今日は素敵なお二人に素敵なケーキを。結婚記念日をおめでとうございます。

Here at Kamesei Ryokan, we recently introduced an "Special Occasions" Plan. The Kudoh's, celebrating their wedding anniversary, are the first guests to stay using that plan. With this plan, guests choose from a cake, flower arrangement, pottery, and a preserved flower decoration. The Kudoh's choose a cake.
To be honest, we have an ulterior motive with this plan. Of course, we want to provide a memorable experience for the Kudoh's in honor of their anniversary. But in addition, this plan lets us build a relationship with some of our local businesses. In most onsen towns like ours, the ryokans and shops operate in separate universes, with very little cooperation or communication between the two sides. This plan is Kamesei Ryokan's attempt to bridge the gap. For example, for this anniversary cake for the Kudoh's, we could have bought a mass-produced one for much less money elsewhere. Instead, we ordered the cake from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's most unique, elegant and delicious cake shop.
But enough about our ulterior motive. We hope this special couple enjoyed their special cake. And we wish the Kudoh's a happy wedding anniversary.

我々旅館は口コミの点数を良く見ています。改造すべきな所はどこかと。改造した所はどういう効果があるかと。その意味で、ネットエージェントのじゃらんネットの口コミデーターが細かくて役に立ちます。戸倉上山田温泉で約３５件の旅館がじゃらんに登録しているので今日はそのトップの宿の口コミを分析しました。我が宿は小さいですから、部屋数や予約の数で勝負が出来ません。従って接客やお料理に努力をかけています。こういう分析で色々と見えてきます。例えば、客室の満足度は５点満点の4.0になっています。以前は3.8や3.9でした。この年度の部屋改造はやはり、効果が見えています。周りの旅館と比較したら、低い方ですからまだまだ努力が必要だと。
そして、外国人利用のtripadvisor.comの口コミも調査しました。千曲市に載っている旅館２３件の中で、亀清旅館は見事に＃１です。インバウンドの努力も効果が見えています。

We ryokans look very closely at the reviews and comments we receive from our guests. We use the data to find out what areas need improvement, as well as what effect the improvements we made is having. Today I researched the data for the top inns here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen on the leading domestic ryokan net agent, Jalan net. Their customer feedback data is very detailed, making for some very enlightening results for us. For example, our guestroom rating is 4.0 out of a total of 5.0. It used to be 3.8~3.9, so we can deduct that the improvements we have been making on the rooms this past year are having a beneficial effect. However, it is still lower than our peers, so we have a lot more work to do.
Besides the domestic market feedback, I also looked at tripadvisor.com's information from the foreigners market. Of the 23 inns listed for Chikuma City, Kamesei is #1. That is really encouraging!

亀清旅館の今年度の目標、客室改造、の次のプロジェクトは無事に出来ました。千歳aka「杏」と末広aka「紅玉」の２部屋のベランダは絨毯が引いてありました。秋にその２部屋の庭は庭師の岡田さんに作ってもらって、そしてコンクリートブロックの塀を壊して、代わりに木の塀を造って、取り付けました。その新しい庭をベランダの椅子から眺める時に、気の塀に合わせてベランダの床は絨毯じゃなくて、やはり木の板がいいナと思いました。

以前に書いたのですが、上田第三木材が長野県の赤松を利用した床材を作っています。私がその工場に買いに行ったので、貼り付けはやっと出来ました。町の大工さん、村越さんが道具を貸してくれて、やり方を親切に教えてくれました。エアーガンを使うのは初めてでした。まあ、そこそこうまく出来たと思います。この板で部屋の雰囲気は大分変わりました。社長も「明るくなった」と言ってくれました。

我々欧米人はどちらかと言うと、こんな木造の床材に憧れます。木の温もりで落ち着きます。尚且つ、地元の木材を使って、そして木こそは「和」の味がします。欧米と日本の両方の良い所を生かす。絨毯の代わりに木の板貼りはこの青い目の若旦那なりのお客様の為のおもてなしの１つです。

My current project for this year has been to renovate some of our guest rooms here at Kamesei Ryokan. I finally completed the next step in that project. Two of our guestrooms, Chitose aka "Anzu" and Suehiro aka "Kogyoku" had some homely carpet laid down in the veranda space in between the tatami mat main room and the garden. This past fall, we had our gardener, Okada-san, re-do the gardens for both rooms. In addition, I demolished the concrete block fence and made a nice wood one. In order for our guests to better enjoy viewing the new gardens, and to better match the wood fences, I decided to install wood flooring in those rooms' verandas.

As I previously mentioned, there is a local wood flooring manufacturer that uses Nagano-grown red pine. I went to their factory and purchased the flooring, and this week I finally had the chance to install it. Our local carepenter, Murakoshi-san, lent me his chop saw and air gun and showed me the installation techniques, and I had at it. It was my first time to use an air gun. The project turned out pretty nice, if I do say so myself. Even our boss said the room feels a lot brighter with the new floor.

Us Westerners tend to appreciate wood floors more than carpet. The wood just lends a nice warmth to the room. And, the wood itself is from local trees, and Japanese construction places a high value on wood materials, too. So the new wood floors are the best of both worlds -- that's the role I like to play as an American innkeeper at a traditional Japanese ryokan.

先日にＳＢＣラジオで俳句の東福寺先生に「初鏡」など、日本のお正月の習慣は色々と教えて頂きました。今日はあやめ会という生け花の仲間が亀清旅館で新年会を行いました。お部屋の床の間にメンバーの皆で作った生け花を飾りました。「初生け」と仰っていました。なるほど。
こうやって、客室の床の間に生け花があれば、季節感も感じれるし、その空間が物凄く新鮮になります。毎週火曜日にその北村先生が教えているから来れば？と誘っていただきました。悩んじゃいました。本当は亀清旅館は客室の床の間に生け花がある様なレベルに持って行きたい。現状の生活では趣味を増やすのは・・・　でも、生け花は憧れていますのでいつかは習いたいです。

Last week, thanks to SBC Radio, I got a lesson in haiku poetry by Tofukuji-sensei. One thing he taught me about Japan's New Years traditions are all the "firsts", like "first time to look in a mirror".
Today we had some guests from the Ayame-kai ikebana circle. During their stay, they made a ikebana decoration for the tokonoma alcove. The flowers make such a difference by bringing in a sense of the season, as well as brightening up the space. Apparently their teacher, Kitamura-sensei, holds lessons every Tuesday, and they invited me to join.
Hmmmm. I really appreciate ikebana, and would love to learn how to do it. But I already have too much on my plate now... Someday!

亀清旅館の宿の前に駐車場があります。でも、なぜか、お客さんに「駐車場はどこか?」とよく聞かれます。考えたら、駐車場の案内看板が無いのはいけないのかと。そのきかけで、息子達と看板作りという工作が始まりました。
ただの駐車場案内看板だけじゃつまらないから、ちょっと遊び心を書けました。まず、亀清の前に通る道は「公園通り」ですが、その名前があまり知られていないそうです。町の道看板を真似して、「公園通り」という看板も作りました。
次は、私の地元のシアトルのＦｒｅｍｏｎｔというご近状に面白い看板があるのでそれも真似してみました。その近状は宇宙の中心だと勝手に決めました。「Fremont Center of the Universe」って画像検索をすれば分かると思います「海は何メーター」、「パリーは何キロメーター」などの印がある。それを真似して、亀清の駐車場看板に「カラコロ足湯は２００ｍ」や「善光寺は３０ｋｍ」、「シアトルは７９８０ｋｍ」も。楽しい作品が出来ました。

Even though we park our guests cars right in front of the entrance to our inn here at Kamesei Ryokan, often guests ask "Where's the parking lot?" I realized, perhaps the problem is we don't have a "P" (Parking) sign. So the boys and I started a little craft project: a Parking sign. And not just any ol' Parking sign -- one with a bit of flair.

First of all, the road that passes in front of Kamesei is technically called Koen Dori (=Park Road). But not many people seem to know its name. So we made a "Koen Dori" street sign, patterned after the city's official ones.

Next, we took some inspiration from the Fremont neighborhood of my home town, Seattle. The people there decided they were the center of the entire universe. If you do an images search for "Fremont Center of the Universe", you'll see the sign they made, with direction arrows to Paris, Timbuktu, and so on. We copied that idea, and made arrows to such places as the Foot Bath (200m), Zenkoji Temple (30km), as well as Seattle (7,980km).
So if you pass in front of Kamesei, please see our new sign. And hopefully our guests will know where the parking is (as well as how far Seattle is!).

今朝に起きたら、外はまた白くなっていました。一昨日ぐらいは最高温度１１度もありましたが、雪がついに戻りました。しかし、亀清の中庭は雪景色モードの時、うんと綺麗です。お客様が喜んでくれました。

This morning when I woke up and looked outside, I was surprised to see everything covered in white. We just had a high temperature of 11 deg C a couple of days ago, but the snow came back quickly. I have to say, Kamesei's naka-niwa garden sure looks pretty with its blanket of snow. Our guests were delighted with the beautiful scenery.

温泉旅館に泊まる方は様々です。毎週の様に旅館に泊まる方がいながら（つい最近そういう｢プロ｣がお越しになりました！）、年に一度に何かの特別な記念の為にお泊りになる方もいらっしゃる。その為に、亀清旅館の｢記念日プラン｣は前から造りたいと思っていました。何の付加価値の得点は喜ばれるか、ずっと悩んでいました。そして、先日は温泉の花屋さんに顔を出したら、良い香りした綺麗なバラのアレンジメントがありました。そして、隣のスイーツ屋さんに入ったら、豪華なケーキがありました。考えてみれば、この戸倉上山田温泉で記念日の為の得点として喜ばれる商品は沢山あるって事に気付きました。先月は子供達を連れて、「Ｂａｍｂｏｏ」というお店のプリザーブ・フラワーの飾りを作る体験をしました。そういう飾りもある！そして、私が大好きな、この温泉のオリジナルの更科焼きの陶芸もある！
夫々のお店を打ち合わせして、地元の特別商品を生かした記念日プランを造りました。是非、次の誕生日や結婚記念日などの特別な時に、ご利用して頂きたいと思っております。

日本の冬の楽しみの一つは鍋料理。我が家族の今日の夕食は寄せ鍋でした。妻と子供達と自分がお鍋の周りに集まって、お話しながら具をちょっとずつ入れ、出来上がったのを取って、美味しく＋楽しく頂きました。温かい鍋料理は寒い冬に合うし、皆が自然に集まる。

亀清旅館では、Ｃｈｅｆ武井がお客様の依頼があれば鍋料理も出します。具沢山の暖かい鍋はやはり、人気があります。冬限定ということで、ＨＰのプランのメニューを更新して、改めて鍋プランを足しました。是非、冬だからこその良さを楽しんで下さい。

Tonight, our family had an "o-nabe" hotpot meal for dinner. "Nabe" means pot, and dishes cooked in a pot in the middle of the table are a favorite winter-time cuisine here in Japan. We certainly enjoyed our nabe tonight -- the heated food warms your body on cold winter days like this. Plus, it really brings the family together. We had some fun conversation with the kids while eating out of the same pot together.

Our chef here at Kamesei Ryokan provides "o-nabe" meals for guests if requested. I went ahead and updated our website with a Winter Special "O-Nabe" plan, featuring 4 different types including shabu-shabu. So now our guests can enjoy a warm, family-bonding meal at Kamesei this winter.

I love photography. Both taking pictures as well as seeing pictures that other people have taken. I use a lot of my pictures for this blog, but today I am dedicating this entry to pictures taken by some of our guests. And also to pictures of some of our guests.

まずは、お正月にお泊りになった田尻さんからの写真。「あまり上手な写真ではないのでゴメンナサイです。」と本人が言いますが、すごく格好良く撮れています。実物があんなに格好いいのに・・・

この間、亀清旅館のお客様から難しい指摘を頂きました：

[ヒバの露天風呂の]横に目を移すと竹製の囲いの中にクリスマスツリーの電飾の様なものがピカピカ光っていました。何を意味しているのか分からない上に、都会のネオンサインを想像させられ、興醒めでした。
神奈川から自然を求めて長野に来たのに、ネオンサインにはちょっとがっかりしました。

実は、お客様がお気になっていたネオンですが、私のアメリカのベストフレンドがネオンのグラスアーティストなので作っていただきました。その露天風呂を作った時に、どちらかと言うと狭い所に無理にして作りました。何か目を遊ばす物が欲しいと思っていました。例えば、長野県の野沢温泉の代表の宿、さかえやさんの露天風呂の横に水車があります。そこで、私の作った塀の竹一本の中にネオンを入れ込んで、ネオンが見れる様に、竹に穴を開けました。よく見ていただけたら、その穴は温泉マークの形です（下のカーブに3つの湯気）。つまり、自然の温泉の流れをイメージしたネオン・電気の流れに自然な竹の中のアート作品です。東京の派手なネオンと間違われたら、心が痛いです。でも、それはあくまで私の説明不足のせいで、大変失礼致しました。反省で、「作品だ！」と分かるように、小さなサインを造りました。これでお客様の誤解を避けて、逆に喜び度を高めるのではないかと思います。いかがでしょうか？

We received a troubling comment from one of our guests here at Kamesei Ryokan. The guest said the neon next to the yellow cedar outdoor bath reminded him too much of the garish neon lights of Tokyo, and ruined Nagano's natural mood.
Ouch. Apparently our attempt to provide some art for our guests failed. You see, the mentioned neon is a piece of art from my best friend in Seattle, Matt, a neon glass artist. When I built that outdoor bath, there was minimal space to work with. I felt the end result needed a little something to entertain the eye. For example, one of Nagano's classic ryokans, Sakaya in Nozawa, has a waterwheel next to their outdoor bath. So Matt and I took his neon crackle tube and fitted it inside one of the pieces of bamboo making up the bath's surround. We cut holes in the bamboo's face in a pattern inspired by Japan's onsen mark -- an upfacing curve with three waves of steam. The blueish white neon movement symbolizes the flow of the onsen, all in a natural, bamboo setting.
Well, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I just hope our guests realize this art is beauty. In order to help, I made a little sign to help explain. Hopefully this well do the trick. What do you think?
