亀清旅館のそれぞれの客室をちょっとずつ改造しています。地元の文化や伝統を取組んだテーマに合わせて。

その１つは「末広」という部屋です。この部屋の庭が狭くて、そしてコンクリートのブロック塀のせいでなお狭く感じました。去年はそのブロック塀を壊して、織り込んだ木の塀を作って、取り付けました。そしてうちの庭師、岡田さんがその狭いスペースにちょっとした庭を作ってくれました。浅間石を使ったり、うまく出来ました。その庭の代表はリンゴの木です。昔からの尼酸っぱいリンゴ、「紅玉」です。私が４年半前に長野に引っ越ししてからの毎年の楽しみは周辺の農園で採れたての紅玉を食べる事。

という事で、この部屋は今度、「紅玉」という名前に変える計画です。そのテーマに合わせて、ベランダのコーヒーテーブルをリンゴの木で作りました。手作り感があって、良い雰囲気じゃないかと思います。でも、思ったほど、作るのは難しかった。家具を作る皆に尊敬しています。

これから、この部屋にお泊りになるお客様が喜んでいただけるのかな？

地元のベテランの庭師が亀清旅館の中庭を見た時に、「あの灯篭は善光寺灯篭と言う。お寺の鐘の音が届く範囲に見られる」と仰いました。今日は、旅行作家の方が見えて、戸倉上山田温泉が善光寺参りの帰りで、精進落しの湯と呼ばれているって話になって、亀清の中庭にある善光寺灯篭を思い出しました。作家に見せたら、喜んでくれました。やはり、戸倉上山田温泉と善光寺のつながりが強いです。今も、亀清に泊まりに来はるお客さんで善光寺参りの為に来た方が多いです。

善光寺。温泉。やはり、それぞれの深い効果があります。

A local veteran gardener once commented that the tourou lantern in Kamesei's nakaniwa garden is a Zenkoji Tourou. Supposedly lanterns of this shape are only found in places that the sound of the Zenkoji's temple bells can be heard.

Today, a travel writer paid us a visit. He commented on how Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is considered a "shojin-otoshi" onsen for Zenkoji, meaning people who made a pilgrimage to the temple often stopped to spend a night at our onsen town before returning to their regular lives. I recalled what the gardener had said about our lantern, so I pointed it out to the writer. It bore reference to the connection between our town and the Temple.

亀清の客室｢千歳」は森・杏の里地区の記念で｢杏｣というテーマで切り替え中です。去年にその部屋の庭のコンクリートブローク塀を壊して、編みこんだ木の塀を変わりに作りました。そして、庭師の岡田さんに杏の木を中心した庭を造ってもらいました。先日は岡田さんがそのメンテナで来てくれました。新しい植物が思っていた通り育ってきているようで、岡田さんが喜んでいました。特に、杏の木のふもとに植えた白花ウツボグサがすばらしいグラウンドカバーになっていました。ラベンダーに似ている形の白い花が見事だ。今は丁度花のピークです。
今まではその部屋の庭が狭くて、暗くて、寂しくて、お客さんはほとんどカーテンを空けなかった。この改造のお陰で、夕べに泊まったお客さんがずっとベランダ(去年に床に木の板を新しく貼ったベランダ）にずっと座っていて、カーテンがいていて、庭の眺めを楽しんで頂きました。
Kamesei Ryokan's guest room "Chitose" is slowly being transformed around an apricot-based theme in honor of nearby Mori "Apricot Village". Last year, I knocked down the concrete block wall for its small garden, and replaced it with a woven wood fence. Then we had our gardener, Okada-san, plant a garden based around a new apricot tree. Okada-san came yesterday to do maintenance on the garden, and was pleased with how the new plants are developing. In particular, the Prunella vulgaris Albiflora has become a lovely ground cover at the base of the apricot tree. It's white flowers are in peak bloom right now.

子供達は今日、学校が休みだったのでまた新しい工作に手伝ってもらった。亀清旅館の中庭の角に洗濯機が置いてあります。ラティスの塀で隠されたが、ラティスが日本の旅館に会わないし、渡り廊下から丸見えでした。
そして、子供たちと以前に頂いた竹を割って、ラティスの変わりにこの塀を作りました。思ったより倍ぐらいな時間がかかったけど、まあまあ良くできました。洋風のラティスより、竹が日本の旅館、日本の庭に合うし、手作り感もあるし、ちょっとした亀清旅館のプッチ改善です。

亀性旅館は昔からの伝統的なつくりなので、直す所が沢山あります。ちょっとずつ、ちょっとずつ、改善していきます。

Our kids had the day off from school, so I had them help me with a little project. In the corner of our naka-niwa garden, we have a clothes washer. It was hidden behind a lattice fence, but was still visible from the watari-roka corridor. So with the help of our kids, I split a bunch of bamboo and used it to make this new screen.
It took twice as long to finish as I thought, but I am pretty happy with the results. Bamboo fits in much better than lattice with the "Wa" of our Japanese inn and the Japanese garden. And the fence has a nice "hand-made" touch to it. Hopefully our guests will enjoy it more than the tacky lattice predecessor.
Our inn is an old building with so many places that need fixing. I hope to be able to continue to make improvements like this!

おニューの悩み：亀性旅館のお料理で信州の食材を生かしたいけど、刺身はどうするか？
野沢温泉の「さかや」にとまった時に、夕食のお作りに川魚の刺身が出て、｢なるほど｣と思いました。そこの若旦那の晃さんに聞いたら、｢そうだよ。長野県の旅館は刺身に海老と鮪を出さない勇気が必要だ｣と言ってくれました。
確かに、海のない長野でなぜ海を物か？しかし、山の刺身で・・・川魚は好き・嫌いが激しいし、鯉が苦手な方も多いし、馬刺しを食べれない方も多いし。亀性旅館はお客さんの半分ぐらいが地元の長野の方なので長野県民には刺身で海老と鮪がないとさびしがります。
でも、晃さんの言葉が耳に響いているし、お客様からの声も少し増えてきましたし、板長といろいろと相談しましたので、その結果はここです：亀性旅館の山の幸プラン。普段の中のお料理にも、板長が信州の美味しい食材を使っていますが、このプランではさらに長野の食｢文化｣に特化したお料理を提供いたします。その旬の取れる材料：鴨、山菜、千曲川の鮎、高原野菜、鹿肉、信州味噌、など等。
刺身の問題はどうなったかと言うと、川魚or馬刺しと言う選択にしました。両方が嫌いな人はおそらく｢山の幸プラン｣に最初から興味がないだろうと。

Our new worry here at Kamesei: We want to focus on local foods for our meals, but what to do for sashimi?
Once I stayed at Sakaya Ryokan up in Nozawa Onsen, and was surprised to be served river fish for sashimi. When I asked Akira-san, the "waka-danna" there, he said, "That's right. Ryokans in Nagano should have the guts to NOT serve ebi (shrimp) and maguro (tuna) for the sashimi."
That makes sense. Nagano doesn't have an ocean, so why serve food from the ocean.
But, river fish? Or another local specialty, carp? Or even yet another Nagano delicacy, raw horse meat? Some people would find those difficult to eat. Plus, here at Kamesei Ryokan, around half of our guests are local Nagano people. And local Nagano people are disappointed if they don't get ebi and maguro for their sashimi.
Yet, Akira's words stuck in my head, and more and more guests are asking about it, so I discussed about a special Regional Food plan with our chef and came up with the following: Nagano Regional Cuisine Plan. We will feature all-local, seasonal ingredients, allowing our guests to get a complete experience of local, Nagano cooking. And for the sashimi? Guests can choose from either basashi or river fish served raw.

我が宿、亀清旅館が古いです。見方は大体2つに分かれています：
Ａ．古くてボロボロ；全部を壊して作り直しなさい！
or
Ｂ．古くて良い；このままで守って下さい！

このごろはＡ．のお客さんからの口コミが入りました。「水出が悪い」とか、「お風呂のシャワーが黒い」とか。
水の配管が古いので、詰まってきた部分が確かにあり。今回のクレームの所は設備屋さんを呼んだけど、原因は壁の中だから難しい・・・　シャワーの方は、上山田温泉の成分が強いから、一年以内取り替えた物でも黒くなっちゃう。「温泉だ」という証拠としてみてもらえないのかな？

私共夫婦でそう書かれたら悲しくなる。色々直している中、そして日々の努力は意味がないのかな？

味付けは、いろいろなお客様相手ですからむずかしいでしょうね。

　連休後に息子の挙式があるので、今年の旅行は見合わせようと思って
おりました。
が、日頃の生活からリセットしたく、ぎりぎりになって計画を立てたの
でした。

　温泉が好きでいろいろなところに行っておりますが、あっさり系の宿
泊施設が多い中、亀清旅館さんのお客様を大切にする真心が伝わって嬉
しく、ゆっくりくつろぐことが出来たのだと思います。
よかったね、と何度も帰りの車の中で話しながら帰ってきました。

　心　って大事ですね。
見えなくても伝わりますもの。

人と関わる仕事に携わっておりますが、ひしひしとそれを感じた今回の

「玄関の大きさ、高さと奥行き。中庭を施した点在する部屋。１０畳の部屋と窓辺のロビー。

しんとした自然。漆黒の夜の深さ。朝目覚めた時、鳥の鳴き声がきれいに響くこと。

これらが、完全な「静か」を感じさせ、誰しも人の心にある幼い頃の故郷を思わせ、温泉
とともによく休むことができるのだと思います。
本当によかったと思います。」

亀清の女風呂の壁のタイルの一角が前から浮いてきていて、危ないなと思ったらやはり一枚が落ちた。態々業者さんを呼ぶべきかな？自分で直してみようかな？と悩みました。他の旅館若旦那達の皆はどうするでしょう？
まあ、道具は大体そろっているし、やってみようと。近所の金具屋さんと相談して、セメントを買って、やってみた。浮いていた数枚を外して、セメントを塗って、タイルを貼り付けた。タイルとタイルの間のバランスは難しかったし、セメントの白い色が目立つ所は気になる。乾いたら、再度仕上がりして見なきゃ。やはり、プロに任せるべきでしたかな？
ちなみに、こういう作業は絵になるかどうか分かりませんが、今日はまたフジテレビの「国際結婚」の取材が来ていまして、作業の全部を撮影してくれました。「海外からの旦那が伝統的な旅館を守る」と言うテーマ（？）。こんな下手な作業よりもっと格好いいところを移ったらどう？と思いながら・・・まあ、土山さん達、撮影をご苦労様でした。

Kamesei's smaller bath had some issues with the tiles. Part of the wall was starting to bulge out, as a few of the tiles started to become loose. Then one of them fell and broke. Okay, I can't ignore this any longer. The problem is, do we call in a professional, or do I try to fix the tiles myself? I wonder what other innkeepers would do in this situation.

Well, by this time, you probably know me -- I took a stab at fixing the tiles myself. I have the necessary tools, and walked over to our local mom-and-pop hardware store to get advise and buy materials. Then I went to the bath and removed the loose tiles, applied new mortar, and affixed new tiles. It was really hard to get the spacing right, and the new white mortar really stands out, so I'll probably have to go back and apply a finish layer of colored mortar.

All of this work was done with a television crew filming my every move. Fuji Television is doing a special on international marriages, and decided to do a feature on this American who came to take on a traditional Japanese ryokan. I'm not sure how much of a visual picture me messing around with tiles will be... Once they tell us the broadcast schedule, I will let everyone know!

先日はこの戸倉上山田温泉の旅館の数件と、上山田のりんご農園の数人が集まりました。温泉と農園はどういう取り組みが出来るか、色々と話し合いました。宿によって、収穫の時期にお茶菓子のついでにりんごを出す宿もあるし、亀清旅館みたいに玄関に「ご自由にどうぞ」って事で、丘ｙクさんにりんごを提供している宿もある。りんごで甘みを取ってすき焼きを出している宿も。そして、清風園という大手の宿から「デザートで焼きりんごを出したら？」と言う案が出ました。夕べは亀清の板長が早速、オリジナルの焼きりんごデザートを作ってみました。りんごの中身を掘り出して、シナモンで味を付けて、中に戻して、オーブンで焼く。おいしそうに出来ました。この秋は定期的に出すように計画しています。せっかく近場にりんご農園があるから、もっと生かせば良いと思います。そして、お客さんがりんごを食べてみたら、りんご農園に行きたくなる可能性もある。お客さんとりんご農園のふれあいになると良いですね。

Last week, a few of us ryokan owners met up with a few of the local apple growers, and we discussed ways in which to colloborate with each other better. Normally, farmers are farmers, and tourist industry is tourist industry, and never the twain shall meet. Well, we're hoping to bridge that gap. Kamesei already puts out apples at the front desk for our guests to help themselves to during the harvest season. Other inns add apples to the tea sweets they provide in the guest rooms. Another inn purees apples and uses them to sweeten the sukiyaki hotpot. But one inn suggested serving baked apples for dessert, with the explanation that these apples came from nearby orchards. Last night, our chef tried out a new, original recipe. He sliced the top off of the apple, scooped out the interior, seasoned it with cinammon, put it back and baked it in the oven. You can see in the picture how yummy it turned out! We hope do something like this for desserts for our guests in the apple harvest season this Fall. And hopefully it will better introduce our guests to our local apple orchardists!

亀清旅館のお風呂場の前に、ちょっとした温泉資料館があります。なんちゃった歴史館です。私がこちら来てから集まった温泉関係の物です。木の棚の中に展示してあります。
昨日の上山田温泉会社の源泉工事で出てきたオブジェは1つを頂きました。井戸の上に設置してあった部品です。新しい部品が取り付けられたのでこの部品はいらなくなった。我が展示所の為に下さりました。むちゃくちゃ重いけど、なんとか棚に設置が出来ました。温泉の成分がいっぱいくついているので温泉の力が感じれます。
今度、亀清旅館のお風呂に入る時に、プチ歴史ギャラリーもご覧になって下さい。

In front of the entrances to Kamesei Ryokan's baths, we have a wood bookshelf filled various onsen artifacts that I have collected over the years. During yesterday's onsen well work by the Kamiyamada Onsen Company, one of the old parts got replaced and the Company offered to give it to me to add to my little history collection. This part weighs a ton -- literally! We needed a crane to move it. Somehow I got it situated into our little onsen gallery. You can see the onsen mineral deposits on it -- it shows how powerful the onsen water is!

亀清旅館で色んな兄弟会や同級会が行います。先日は島田さん達の兄弟会でした。毎年にどこかの温泉で集まるらしいです。そして、夕食が終わったら、皆で絵葉書を書く習慣があるそうです。
温泉に入って、食事をゆっくり食べて、そして皆で思い出になる工作を作る。素晴らしい習慣ですね。今年の集まりは亀清旅館を選んでいただいて、有難うございました。

Here at Kamesei Ryokan, we are priveleged to host a variety of class and family reunions. The other night, the Shimada Family gathered here for their annual get-together. Every year, the family meets at an onsen ryokan, relaxes in the baths, enjoys a gourmet meal, then come together to make these cards. What a great tradition. We are grateful the Shimada Family chose Kamesei Ryokan for this year's gathering!
