外の温度が急に夏の様になってきまして、そのお蔭かどうか分かりませんが、亀清旅館の中庭の池に住んでいる亀２匹は冬眠からしっかり出て、あちらこちらに遊んでいます。一匹は置物の亀の上にも上った!

亀清の看板動物ですのでお越しになれば中庭で探してみてください。

Temperatures outside have climbed to summer-like highs. I'm not sure if that's the reason or not, but the 2 turtles that live in Kamesei Ryokan's koi pond have definitely come out of hibernation and are playing all over our naka-niwa garden.

One of the turtles even climbed up on the little turtle figurine we have by the pond!

If you come to Kamesei, try seeing if you can find one of the turtles in the pond.

亀清旅館の中庭のボタンの花が綺麗に咲いてきました。お客様にお部屋を案内するついでに「あっ、ボタンだ!庭が綺麗だね!」とよく言われます。その派手な一つな植物のお蔭で、良い第一印象になります。

それと比較したら、岡田庭師が去年の１０月に作ってくれた客間「松風」の庭は決して派手な花がありません。パッと見て、「アッ、まだ作成中か」とがっかりするお客様がいらっしゃいます。

でも、逆に、見方によって、「そのギボウシが綺麗ですね」とか、更に良く見たら、「桑がある；珍しいね」とか。

つまり、派手な花で勝負する庭と、見れば見るほど楽しめる控えめな庭と、２種類がある訳です。

松風の庭は庭師が去年の秋に植物を植えたばかりで、一冬を通して、これから初新緑。植物が馴染んでくれば素敵な庭が出来上がる。その庭は「今日」の為にじゃなくて来年、再来年、その先の事を考えて作った訳です。「ローマは一日にならず」じゃないですが、良い庭を育っていくのに、時間がかかります。

亀清の自慢の手作り「１００年風呂」露天風呂の庭は岡田さんが４年前に作ってくれました。大分馴染んできて、パッと見て楽しめるし、その上に、お風呂をゆっくり浴びならが見れば見るほど楽しい庭となってきました。

これが亀清旅館のこれからの「宿つくり・庭つくり」です。

The peony plant in our naka-niwa central garden here at Kamesei Ryokan is in full bloom right now. As I take guests to their rooms, they often see the rich reddish-purple flowers and comment what a beautiful garden.

On the other hand, the garden for our guest room 'Matsukaze' was re-made last fall by our gardener, Okada-san, and is just now coming alive for its first spring.

One recent guest saw Matsukaze's garden and was disappointed it was so sparse. However, a different guest took a look at it and said happily, "What a beautiful hosta." And, after looking closer, "And a mulberry plant -- how uncommon!"

I realized that there are 2 types of gardens: showy ones that dazzle with a few splashes of color; and subtle ones that captivate the viewer the closer you look.

Okada-san didn't build Matsukaze's garden for today or tomorrow, but for 2, 3, 10 years in the future. Just like Rome wasn't built in a day, a good garden grows into form over the years.

Okada-san built the garden for our '100 Year Bath' outdoor bath four years ago. It has gradually grown into a garden that not only captivates the ey upon first glance, but also provides pleasure upon closer inspection as guests slowly soak in the outdoor bath.

That's the type of garden we hope to build as we make improvements here at Kamesei.

私みたいにアサヒやバドワイザーの様な水っぽいビールより、深い味の地ビールを好むなら、良いお知らせがあります：　亀清旅館で志賀高原ビールは3種類を扱っています。

今までは苦い系のＩＰＡと黒ビールのＰｏｒｔｅｒを扱っていましたが、この頃はフルーティーのＰａｌｅ　Ａｌｅも足しました。地ビールに慣れていない方にはこのＰａｌｅ　Ａｌｅから始まる様にお勧めします。

もちろん、食事の時に冷たいのを喜んで提供ができますが、フロントの売店コーナーにも展示するようにしましたので、長野の土産としてお買いになって頂けます。三種類をを好きな組み合わせで、3本ギフトパックで1500円です。

長野県は沢山の地ビールがありますが、価格と味を考えれば志賀高原が一番いい瓶ビールだと思う。地ビールにうるさいこの青い眼の若旦那のお勧めである。

If you're like me and favor the full tastes and bodies of microbrews over watery beers like Asahi or Budweiser, then I have good news for you: here at Kamesei Ryokan we now serve 3 styles of Shiga Kogen Beer. We've been serving the bitter IPA and the dark Porter for a while, and have recently added the fruity Pale Ale. For people just getting acquainted with microbrews, this Pale Ale is probably the most approachable.

We of course serve all 3 microbrews ice cold for our guests at dinner, but I set up this display at our souvenir corner at Kamesei's Front, too. Now guests can pick and choose their favorite combination of 3 boottles and take them home in this nifty gift pack (1,500 yen). Mind you, I'm a beer snob, but in my opinion Shiga Kogen beers have the best taste for the money out of all of Nagano's microbrews -- plus they come in bottles, not cans! And if you don't believe me, here's a second opinion.

若女将と私、若旦那は自分達の好みで種類を増やして、そして板長のお料理の進化とともにお客さんのご希望を取り入れて、こんなラインアップになってきました：

Up until quite recently, our drink menu here at Kamesei Ryokan consisted of
1. Asahi Beer
2. Obasute Masamune, our local sake
3. 20-Proof Zipangu shochu
Not very extensive, eh?

The proprietress and I have livened things up a bit taking hints from our chef's cuisine as well as requests from the guests. Now our line-up consists of the following:

1. Asahi Beer + Shiga Kogen Brewery's Pale Ale, IPA and Porter
2. Local Obasute Masamune sake + one from Iwate Prefecture in support of disaster relief
3. 20-Proof Shochu + potato and barley
4. Wine: Our chef's Shinshu wagyu steaks have been popular lately, and they go really well with wine. Hence the additions of Goichi Wine (Nagano, red and white) by the glass, Izutsu Wine (Nagano, red) and, my suggestion, Columbia Crest (Washington State, cabernet sauvignon).

A big improvement, wouldn't you say? If any other suggestions, please let us know!

地震・津波・原発の不安の中で…

昨日にも書きましたが、旅館は静けさを提供するのが重要だと。その為のプランを提供したいのでお知らせします：

リセットプラン：　若旦那と朝五時座禅

この時こそ、温泉宿に泊まって、心の修業はいかがでしょうか？お泊りになる日の次の朝５時に亀清のロビーで集合し、青い目の若旦那と一緒に開眼寺の座禅堂にて座禅を体験すると言うプランです。その後、亀清に戻り、朝食を召し上がって頂けます。

朝５時に頑張って起きて、開眼寺へ向かって、木造の温もりの座禅堂で小鳥の鳴き声や森の風の音だけ、つまり都会の喧騒から離れて静かなときと場所でご一緒に座禅をしませんか？

このプランではお料理が夕食も朝食もChef武井の手をかけた亀清旅館の代表の料理です。
お湯は上山田の温泉らしいお湯女湯にも男湯にもそれぞれ露天風呂が付いております。
お部屋は離れ風かお風呂前か２階山景色のどれかになります。

注意点：

＊座禅のやった事ない人でも大歓迎。若旦那が事前に１ポイント座禅レッスン致します。

＊座禅堂の場所はお寺さんなので参加者は志付けをお願いいたします。

The 3.11 earthquake and tsunami disaster and the ensuing radiation scare has taken a toll on all of our psyches. As per my previous entry, we here at Kamesei Ryokan are hoping to do our part by providing a quiet place for people to get back in touch with themselves. As part of this effort, we would like to introduce a new plan:

"Reset Plan" 5am Zen Meditation

Perhaps we all need to stop and make time for some meditation.

We here at Kamesei Ryokan would like to provide a relaxing stay at our onsen ryokan, where guests can enjoy our peaceful, traditional inn, the rejuvenating onsen baths, and our chef's tantalizing kaiseki-style dinner, followed by a trip to nearby Kaigen-ji Temple's zazen room for an early morning meditation session.

Kaigen-ji is a centuries-old temple with a modern all-wood zazen meditation hall in the forested hills above the Chikuma River here in the Nagano countryside. At 5am, the temple is silent and still, with only the sounds of birds chirping and the wind rustling in the nearby trees -- perfect for a quiet time of inner reflection.

Note:

Plan includes dinner in your guestroom as well as breakfast served back at our inn following the 5am zazen meditation. Our onsen baths are available 24 hours a day featuring 100% flow-through natural hot spring mineral water. Both the mens and womens baths have outdoor 'rotenburo' baths also.

Zazen meditation first-timers are welcome -- our proprietor will gladly explain the basics in English.

A amall donation for the temple would be appropriate.

亀清旅館の客室の冷蔵庫は今まで２４時間３６５日間で電源が付けっぱなしでした。以前からは気になっていたが、今の震災関係の節電の中で、スイッチを取り付けるチャンスだと思いました。先日に里帰りした時に、適応な物を見つけたので、買って帰りました。この２，３日日間に取り付ける作業をしました。

これで客室の冷蔵庫、全部にスイッチが付きました！掃除のバイトの人が、「えっ、こういう専用なスイッチがあるんだ！」と驚きました。いいえ、専用なスイッチじゃなくて、私が工夫して取り付けた訳。

冷蔵庫のご利用したいお客様はご自由にスイッチをオンにして、ご利用して頂けます。これで電気の無駄使いの一つを防ぐことが出来ました。

Up until now, the refrigerators in the guest rooms here at Kamesei Ryokan have been running 24 hours, 365 days a year. I had always thought that to be a wasteful use of energy. Now with the earthquake / tsunami / nuclear radiation problems resulting in a nationwide electricity shortage, I decided to take advantage of the situation and attach switches to all of our refrigerators. When I was in back home in the States, I picked up a suitable switch at a home center store, and over the past few days I worked to attach them to all of the refrigerators.

One of our cleaning ladies saw them and said, 'Wow, I didn't know there were switches for this.' There aren't -- I had gotten creative and made my own solution.

Now our guests have the option of switching on the fridges whenever they like. Meantime, they stay off, meaning an end to a waste of electricity!

亀清の客室「千歳」は去年から少し改造して、地元のあんずの里の記念として「杏」のテーマにしています。庭に杏の木も植えました。今日見たら、花が咲き始まりました。今まで亀清旅館にない色で、私は非常に嬉しいです。

宿つくりの中で、こういう「花」も必要。

注：森「あんずの里」のあんずまつりは４月２日に始まりました。しかし、低い温度に日々が続いていて、８日ぐらいからは花見ができる程度咲く見込みです。祭りは１６日までですが、花はもう少しのころ様な気がします。また写真を撮りに行って、ここで載せますので宜しくお願いします。

For Kamesei Ryokan's guestroom 'Chitose', last year we started doing a small make-over to a 'Anzu' (apricot) theme in honor of our local Anzu no Sato (Apricot Village) district. Part of the make-over was to plant an apricot tree in the room's private garden. When I checked on it yesterday, I was thrilled to see that the tree had started to bloom. Until we planted this tree, Kamesei never had this type of colorfulness.

Adding color like this is a major goal for the improvements we are making here at Kamesei.

NOTE: Mori's Apricot Village started this year's Apricot Blossom Festival on April 2nd, but the flowers are late this year due to continuing cold temperatures. The locals say the blossoms will be ready by Friday the 8th for viewing. The festival is scheduled to run through April 16th, but I'm guessing the blossoms will continue a bit past that. I will get some pictures and post them here regularly.

里帰りから帰ってきたら、亀清の玄関に新しい花が植えてあって、驚きました。春先らしい明るい花で、素敵だなと思った（と、亀清の者として言うのはあれですけど…）

きっと、いない間に東京の従妹、みどりさんが来て、この作品を残してくれたかな？

これからは杏が咲くし、少しずつ温かくなるし、良い時期だな。

When I got back from my trip home to the States, I was happy to see new flowers in the pots at Kamesei Ryokan's entrance. Apparently while I was away, our cousin Midori-san from Tokyo came and made a little flower magic for our inn. Nice flowers for the start of Spring. And the apricot blossoms in our town are starting to bloom, the days are getting a bit warmer. Spring is definitely in the air!

来冬の分の薪集めはやっと終わりました。川辺から国が切ったニセアカシアを頂いたり、りんご農園から剪定物を頂いたり、色々な所から薪を運んで、細かく切って、斧で割って、薪小屋に積んで、もう、体中の筋肉と言う筋肉が痛いです。どれだけ灯油の方が安い事！

でも、こうやって東日本の地震・津波の後、日本全国的に灯油やガソリンが不足します。その時に、亀清旅館のロビーと私達に住んでいる部屋に薪ストーブがある為にその分で灯油を頼らなくてほっとします。宿の看板もソーラーパネル利用の光で照らしている。本当はもっとソーラーパネルを増やせば、電力も頼らなくていい様になればなお良いですね。こちらで節電できたらもっと必要としている人たちに回せるよね。まあ、他な面で出来るだけ節電しています。

I hereby declare that our Firewood Gathering 2011 is finished! Getting acacia wood that the government cuts at the Chikuma River, or apple tree trimmings from area orchardists, one way or another I sourced enough wood, hauled it back to Kamesei, cut it into short lengths, split it and stacked it. It makes me realize just how inexpensive heating oil is.

On the other hand, in times like this when earthquake and tsunami natural disasters cause shortages of heating oil and gasoline, it makes me glad that we have our wood burning stoves. At least for our lobby and our family's living quarters, we don't have to rely on oil. And for our inn's entrance sign, we use a solar-powered light. I wish we had more solar panels so we could be independent from the electrical grid, letting people who need the electricity more than us to use it.
