亀清旅館のロビーに前から周辺の観光パンフが置いてありました。少しごっちゃごっちゃになっていたので、このスタンドを購入して、整理してみました。

この夏休み向けで、お越しになるお客様に周辺の観光情報を提供できるように、沢山のパンフをそろいました。これで皆様が信州をたっぷり楽しんで頂けると思います。

In our lobby here at Kamesei Ryokan, we always had a section of area sightseeing brochures. Now with these new stands, it's a bit more professionally organized. Our guests this summer will hopefully be able to use this info to better enjoy Nagano.

先日の茨城への旅である宿のロビーにピアノが置いてありました。「あっ、亀清旅館みたい」と思いました。

「触れないでください」というカードが付いていた。

えっ、亀清と違うね。我がロビーのピアノは是非にお客さん達に弾いて欲しいです。そのためにロビーに置いてある。

「触れてください」という事を書くべきかな？

One of the inn's I visited on this recent trip to Ibaraki Prefecture had a piano in the lobby. I thought, "Ahh, similar to our lobby at Kamesei Ryokan."

But it had a card on it: "Please do not touch."

Hmm, that's very different from Kamesei's piano. We love to have our guests play the piano. That's why we have it in our lobby!

Maybe I need to put a sign on Kamesei's piano: "Please DO touch."

我が亀清旅館の玄関の前に、この一本のクロマツがあります。夕べに泊まったお客様は毎年にこの松の木の剪定をしてくれる庭師達でした。宴会の時に挨拶をしに行ったら、その庭師の親分が亀清との出会いを話してくれました：

若旦那が来る前に、我々は違う宿の庭で仕事をしていた。いつも亀清を見たら、「立派な松だな」と思いました。「誰でも剪定しても立派な気だ」と。そして、亀清の大女将が声をかけてくれて、亀清の仕事をするようになった。昔はそれぞれの宿は廊下があって、両側に庭があった様な作りでした。あれから皆がその木造な建物を壊して、鉄筋・コンクリートの箱を作ってしまった。昔からの作りを残しているのは亀清ぐらい。

と、褒めて頂きました。

私も、このクロマツが立派だと思っています。その横のでかい鉄の看板は邪魔と思って、去年の秋に木の看板を作って設置しました。いつかはその鉄の看板を取り外したいと思っています。庭師達に鉄の看板の事を聞いたら、やはり邪魔だと同意見でした。

とにかく、亀清の顔のクロマツをこれからも大事にしたい。

At Kamesei Ryokan's entrance is this 'kuromatsu' Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii Parl.). Last night, the gardeners who give this tree its yearly trim stayed at our inn. When I stopped by their banquet to greet them, the old boss told the story of how he came to work on our pine tree:

"Back in the old days, I used to work on the garden of a nearby inn. Every time I passed by Kamesei, I would think, 'Wow, what a spectacular pine tree. It has such a classical shape, any gardener would want to work with it.' And by happenstance, one day Kamesei's old proprietress asked me to do its trimming.
Back then, all the inns had passageways with gardens on either side. Since then, they've been replaced by multi-story steel-concrete boxes. Kamesei's the only one with the classic inn's layout left."

I, too, like the pine tree. Last fall, I made the wooden sign to complement it, and will eventually remove the steel one. The gardeners agreed -- the steel sign is in the way of the pine tree.

亀清旅館の玄関の外にツバメの巣が出来ていて、ママ鳥が一生懸命に赤ちゃんたちを育っています。餌を飛んで持ってくるのに忙しい。鳥の世界にも「お母さん」の意志が強いね。

日本ではツバメの巣が出来ると、運が良いと言うそうです。雲は良いけど、その鳥の糞は迷惑。迷惑けど、巣を取っちゃえばきっとジンクスになるでしょう。取り敢えずは糞の掃除をしながら、小鳥が大きくなって、引っ越しするのを待っています。

ツバメの巣は亀清の入口の少し右にあります。その下に歩けば、糞のご注意を。

A swallow has took up residence in a nest close to Kamesei Ryokan's front door. The mama bird is busy feeding and taking care of her babies. Even in the animal world, that motherly instinct is impressive.

In Japan, it's considered to be a sign of good fortune for swallows to build a nest at your house. I'm not sure about the good fortune, but I do know the nests mean a lot of messy bird poop. However, taking down the nest would jinx us for sure. So we're just biding our time, cleaning up the poop, and waiting for the baby birds to grow up and move out.

The nest is just to the right of our front door. If you walk below it, I highly suggest avoiding the urge to look up.

「行灯」

行く道の為の灯りという意味でしょうか？

辞書に引けば、「行灯」というのは基本的に灯りの周りに和紙が貼ってある。元々は光が油皿で使っていて、和紙が風よけだったそうです。

しかし、もう一つな効果がある。光は和紙を通す事によって柔らかくなる。

このアメ人にとっては、行灯はとっても魅力がある。日本らしい魅力。つまり、クールジャパンの一つ。

アメリカは基本的に「街灯」。高い所から下の全てを照らす。

亀清旅館の初めての露天風呂を作った時に、光についてかなり悩みました。「温泉に入りながら、星の光を浴びたい」というお客様のご要望でした。下手に街灯を付ければ、星の光が見えなくなってしまう。しかし、何かの光をつけないと、夜中に露天風呂に入る方は足元が見えなくて、危ない。

それで、日本の行灯に思いつきました。低い位置から行く道に灯りを…行灯！　位置が低いから、星の光に邪魔しない。ちょうど良い。

そして、露天風呂に入るための手すりも必要だった。うまい具合に手すりの役割にもなるように、行灯を作れました。露天風呂と同じ川石でベースを作って、電気を通して(油じゃなくてごめん！）、木の枠を作って、和紙（！）を貼って、完成。

まきストーブ仲間の村越さんがチェーンソーを使って木で亀を作ってくれました。行燈のふたとしてピッタリ。

おかげさまで、亀清の「１００年風呂」露天風呂は個性的な行灯が出来ました。

自分で言うのはあれですけど、なかなか良い行灯。

ただ、問題は一つがあった。その木の亀の蓋は固定してしまえば、中の電球を取れなくなる。でも、置くだけじゃ手すりの役割として危ない。どうしたら良いか悩んでいた内に、結局置いたままにしてしまった。

つい最近、お客さんに「その行灯が緩くて危ない」というご指摘を頂いてしまいました。久しぶりに行灯をいじってみました。色々と工夫して、固定しておきました。これからの電球の取り換えは手間がかかるけどお客様の安全が第一です。

ただの行灯。思い出で溢れている行灯。

Ever since building an 'andon' lamp for Kamesei's "100 Year Bath" outdoor bath, I've gained a heightened appreciation for these traditional Japanese lights.

By definition, an andon's light is encased in paper. Traditionally, that was because the light source was lamp oil, and paper was needed to protect the flame from the wind. However, the paper serves another purpose -- it filters the light creating a soft effect. To me, that is the essence of an andon -- a low, soft light. Cool Japan.

In contrast, we Americans typically use streetlights -- harsh lights brightly illuminating everything below.

When I built the outdoor bath, one of the factors was to allow our guests to be able to bathe in the starlight as they soak in the onsen. (Hey, that makes a good haiku:

Soak in the onsen
Open to the sky above
Bathe in the starlight)

Anyways, a streetlight would ruin the ambience, and wash out any starlight. However, we needed to illuminate the footpath somehow, otherwise guests would find the approach to the bath too dangerous at night.

That's when I thought of making an andon. It would provide light to the footpath, but softly and from a low angle so as not to disrupt the starlight. So I brought some more rocks from the river to match the rest of the bath, built a base, ran electricity (sorry, not lamp oil), and built a frame out of wood complete with 'washi' traditional Japanese paper covering.

Then one of my woodstove buddies, Murakoshi-san carved a wooden turtle using a chainsaw. It was a perfect cap for the andon. Voila! A pretty unique hand-made andon!

Plus the andon served as a sort of handrail for the bath, so it killed 2 birds with 1 stone (err, several river rocks actually).

The only problem was, I couldn't permantly attach the turtle cap because otherwise I would loose access to the lightbulb inside. However, a guest recently admonished me that the andon was too wobbly to be a handrail. So, for the first time in a few years, I took another look at the andon, stabilized it a bit better, and screwed down the cap. It'll be difficult to change light bulbs from now on, but our guests will be safer.

All this for just a simple andon. A simply memorable andon.

亀清の一番古い建物は中庭の奥にある２階建ての、上が大広間、下は客室と中広間のある建物です。７０年前ぐらいに隣の坂城町の宿場から移築されたそうです。元々は置き屋だったと言われています。

１００年近くの歴史のあ建物、なおかと置き屋だった、きっと色んなストリーがあるでしょう。

今は本当に久しぶりに大広間の建物を取り返っています。床の一部に腐れがあったから私がまた大工さんに変身して、修理しました。

その時に大広間の畳無い床は初めて見ました。いろんな不思議がありました。

２ヶ所に四角い板があって、きっとお茶会の為の釜の跡でしょうと。

もう１ヶ所は取っ手が板の表面にありました。そして、良く見たら、蝶番が近くにあった。何かの扉?明けれるかな?取っ手を手にして、持ち上げてみたら、ちゃんと開けました。何か宝物が隠れているかなと思ったら、空間でした。

私にとってはこの建物実態が宝物です。この宿ののれんを守って行きたいですね。建物のストリーが次の世代に伝われるように。

Kamesei Ryokan's oldest building is the 2-story structure across from the naka-niwa koi pond. The top story houses our big banquet room, and the bottom floor is a guest room and a smaller banquet room. Apparently this building was originally in neighboring Sakaki Town and 70 years was disassembled and relocated here to its present location. And supposedly, the building started out as an 'okiya' geisha house.

You know that as a building that's been around for near a century and has a history of being a geisha house, it must have its share of stories to tell.

Right now we are having the tatami mats in the big banquet room replaced. Part of the subfloor had some rot damage, so I put on my carpenters hat and fixed that section.

This was the first time I've ever seen the subfloor with the tatami mats off. The floor was a patchwork of wood planks, with a few quirks here and there.

In 2 places there were squared-off sections. My guess is that tea ceremonies were held here and this is where the pots were heated by coals.

In another place, there was a handle set in the face of a plank. After a closer look, I realized there were hinges nearby. Hmm, a hatch? Could it open? I lifted the handle and tried pulling the hatch up, and, it opened just as smoothly as could be. I was hoping there would be a hidden treasure underneath, but the space was empty.

In my mind, this whole building is a treasure. I hope I can maintain our inn so the building can tell its stories to the next generation.

新聞のインタビューに亀清旅館のお料理を聞かれました。Ｃｈｅｆ武井の料理は評判がとにかく良いです。業界で認められているじゃらんネットの口コミで、夕食は5点満点の中の4.8～4.9です。お客様が喜んで頂いているのは確かです。

その理由は?またはどんな料理か?と記者さんに聞かれました。色々考えましたが、非常に表現し辛いです。

「これだ!」と言う代表の一品もないし、

旬の物そして地元の食材を生かしているけど、どの宿でもそれをやっているし、

豪華な花や飾りつけは特にしていないし、食器は普通だし、決してプレゼンテーションでポイントが高い訳じゃない、

さあ、その秘密は何でしょうか?

一つなヒントは飛び込みのお客さんとよくあるハプニング：
夕食の準備は間に合わない場合が多いです。だって、冷凍庫から出して、電子レンジで温まる様なお料理じゃないから。

もう1つなヒントは良く「絶品」と言われている冬で出す鮎の煮浸しです。板長は3日間をかけて調理している。そのお蔭で、軟かくて骨まで食べれるようになる。今は番茶付けの山女ですが、この一品はまたファンが多いです。

とにかく、板長は一品一品に手をかけています。そして、定番の物は嫌がる。天ぷらは基本的に出していない。茶わん蒸しは色々と板長の手作り鶯豆腐などの珍しい物が入っていて、「びっくり茶碗」と呼ばれています。

このアイディアー料理はお客様に感動を与えている；それが高い満足度の原因だと思います。

During a recent interview by a newspaper reporter, I was asked to describe Kamesei's meals. Our man in the kitchen, Chef Takei, is a culinary wizard, and his meals create many a happy guest. In Japan's leading internet reservation system 'Jalan', our dinners are currently rated 4.8-4.9 on a 0.0-5.0 scale by guest reviews.

But how to describe our meals -- that's not easy to do. Chef Takei uses seasonal ingredients and sources the majority of the ingredients locally, but then again, so do most other chefs. And the meals rely on the strength of all the various dishes rather than putting emphasis on one stand-out plate.

Perhaps one way to describe the meals is by way of explanation: Many times we have walk-up guests asking for a room for that day, and they are disappointed when told we can provide a room and breakfast but dinner can't be prepared in time. The reason is our chef's meals aren't something taken out of the freezer and warmed in a microwave oven. One of the dishes in fact is prepared over a series of 3 days -- the ayu river fish that our chef slowly simmers in sake and other seasonings making it soft enough to eat the whole fish, even the bones. Our guests often comment they have never tasted anything like it.

Chef Takei's tendency to avoid the 'orthodox' and be creative in his combination of ingredients as well as his pain-stakingly detailed preparation are the keys to the popularity of his meals. If you are interested in trying Japan's 'kaiseki'-style dinner, you will be in for a treat here at Kamesei.

外の温度が急に夏の様になってきまして、そのお蔭かどうか分かりませんが、亀清旅館の中庭の池に住んでいる亀２匹は冬眠からしっかり出て、あちらこちらに遊んでいます。一匹は置物の亀の上にも上った!

亀清の看板動物ですのでお越しになれば中庭で探してみてください。

Temperatures outside have climbed to summer-like highs. I'm not sure if that's the reason or not, but the 2 turtles that live in Kamesei Ryokan's koi pond have definitely come out of hibernation and are playing all over our naka-niwa garden.

One of the turtles even climbed up on the little turtle figurine we have by the pond!

If you come to Kamesei, try seeing if you can find one of the turtles in the pond.

亀清旅館の中庭のボタンの花が綺麗に咲いてきました。お客様にお部屋を案内するついでに「あっ、ボタンだ!庭が綺麗だね!」とよく言われます。その派手な一つな植物のお蔭で、良い第一印象になります。

それと比較したら、岡田庭師が去年の１０月に作ってくれた客間「松風」の庭は決して派手な花がありません。パッと見て、「アッ、まだ作成中か」とがっかりするお客様がいらっしゃいます。

でも、逆に、見方によって、「そのギボウシが綺麗ですね」とか、更に良く見たら、「桑がある；珍しいね」とか。

つまり、派手な花で勝負する庭と、見れば見るほど楽しめる控えめな庭と、２種類がある訳です。

松風の庭は庭師が去年の秋に植物を植えたばかりで、一冬を通して、これから初新緑。植物が馴染んでくれば素敵な庭が出来上がる。その庭は「今日」の為にじゃなくて来年、再来年、その先の事を考えて作った訳です。「ローマは一日にならず」じゃないですが、良い庭を育っていくのに、時間がかかります。

亀清の自慢の手作り「１００年風呂」露天風呂の庭は岡田さんが４年前に作ってくれました。大分馴染んできて、パッと見て楽しめるし、その上に、お風呂をゆっくり浴びならが見れば見るほど楽しい庭となってきました。

これが亀清旅館のこれからの「宿つくり・庭つくり」です。

The peony plant in our naka-niwa central garden here at Kamesei Ryokan is in full bloom right now. As I take guests to their rooms, they often see the rich reddish-purple flowers and comment what a beautiful garden.

On the other hand, the garden for our guest room 'Matsukaze' was re-made last fall by our gardener, Okada-san, and is just now coming alive for its first spring.

One recent guest saw Matsukaze's garden and was disappointed it was so sparse. However, a different guest took a look at it and said happily, "What a beautiful hosta." And, after looking closer, "And a mulberry plant -- how uncommon!"

I realized that there are 2 types of gardens: showy ones that dazzle with a few splashes of color; and subtle ones that captivate the viewer the closer you look.

Okada-san didn't build Matsukaze's garden for today or tomorrow, but for 2, 3, 10 years in the future. Just like Rome wasn't built in a day, a good garden grows into form over the years.

Okada-san built the garden for our '100 Year Bath' outdoor bath four years ago. It has gradually grown into a garden that not only captivates the ey upon first glance, but also provides pleasure upon closer inspection as guests slowly soak in the outdoor bath.

That's the type of garden we hope to build as we make improvements here at Kamesei.
