この千曲市のそれぞれの地区にお神楽は大体あります。千曲市の文化振興事業団がその文化を記念して、「神楽の里：　獅子の舞い２０１１」を開催する事になりました。

「信濃の獅子舞と神楽」という講演と千曲市の最も活発的な神楽連、小島神楽連と私が入っている上山田神楽保存会が出演する予定です。

The various districts in Chikuma City have their own Kagura lion dance troupes. This year, the Chikuma City Culture Foundation has decided to honor this rich tradition and hold a Shi-Shi Lion Dance event.

The event will be marked by a lecture on 'Nagano and Kagura' as well as performances by two of the city's most active Kagura groups, Kojima Kagura Ren and the one I participate in, Kamiyamada Kagura Preservatation Association.

我々上山田神楽保存会は昨日、戸倉上山田温泉にある「アットホーム」と言う老人ホームに呼ばれて、獅子舞をやりました。笑顔が広がれて、良かったです。

老人ホームに行く度に、人生の先の事をいつも考えてしまう。自分はどんな終わり方になるのかな？

まあ、月曜日の朝からその思い考えは良いとして、取り敢えずは生きている間に毎日毎日は良い結果を出していく事！

この間の上山田神楽保存会の新年会の写真です。最後のお締めで北信流が行われました。私は何度も見たし、参加したこともあるので、歴史的な行事です。

At the Kamiyamada Kagura Preservation Group's New Year Party the other day, we finished off with a 'Hokushin-ryu' ceremony. I've seen and taken part in many of these proceedings, and they never fail to impress me with their formal pagentry and deep sense of history. It's said to have originated from here, northern Nagano.

年に一回、我々上山田神楽保存会は上田市の老人ホーム「御所園」に獅子舞しに行きます。今年は１０８歳のおばさんの誕生日のお祝いでした。

１０８歳ですよ。明治生まれ。日露戦争のころに生まれた訳。元気で我々の一生懸命の獅子舞を見てくれました。感心しました。

皆様、いずれかは年を取って、恐らくこういう老人ホームに入るよね。今の内に訪ねて老人の方々に優しくしてあげるべきだと思いませんか？

Once a year, our Kamiyamada Okagura Preservation Group drives to Ueda City to perform at the Goshoen old folks home. This time we helped celebrate the birthday of a 108-year old lady.

108 years old!

That means she was born during the Meiji era. During the Russo-Japanese war. And she very lively watched our full-out lion dance performance.

Hey everybody, we're all going to get old and perhaps eventually wind up in an old-folks home some day. Don't you think it's a good idea to visit one and be nice to the elderly now while we have a chance?

昨日は上山田の波閉科（はべしな）神社の秋祭りでした。

私は布団上げとお客さんのお会計が終わったら、作務衣から祭りの格好に変身して、お神楽の皆と一緒に参加しました。開会式の1回目の獅子舞から初めて、神社まで行列で進んで、それからは周辺や温泉街を回りました。夜に神社へ戻って、爆竹付きのグランドフィナーレの一舞。

長い一日でしたが、毎年の秋の楽しみ。

Yesterday was our local shrine, Habeshina Jinja's annual fall festival.

As soon as I got done with flipping futons and checking out the guests, I changed out of my samue work garb and put on my festival clothes. Then I ran and joined the Okagura lion dance troupe just in time for the opening dance. From there we went in a procession to the shrine for another dance, and then went around the neighborhood and the onsen town stopping at the houses of various elders as well as several of the ryokans for yet more dances. Then at night, we made it back up to the shrine for one last dance, a grand finale highlighted by firecrackers.

It was a long day, but a day I look forward to every fall.

私も入っている上山田神楽保存会は毎週水曜日に練習しています。夕べは戸倉上山田温泉の中心にある公園の能舞台で練習しました。
今まではどこかの公民館で練習していて、そして私が時々亀清旅館に泊まっているお客さんを連れて行きました。そのお客さんが喜んだし、お神楽の皆も見てくれる人がいて喜んだ。よく考えたら、温泉街の｢緑と水と潤いのある公園」に素敵な舞台があります。残念ながら、利用者が少ない。せっかくだから、我々のお神楽の練習はそこでやろうかと言う話になりました。市役所に聞いてみたら、「あっ、是非！使わないともったいない！」と許可を出してくれました。夕べの練習から早速、公園の舞台に移しました。
公園でやったら、思ったより人が集まりました。亀清と他の宿の浴衣姿のお客さんや、近所の人たち、芸者さんも一人が着ました。温泉夏祭り祭典がジュースを持ってきてくれたし、結構盛り上がりました。
これからは夏の時期を向かって、毎週水曜日の夜８時ごろから上山田神楽保存会の練習を戸倉上山田温泉の公園の舞台で楽しんで頂けますので宜しくお願いします！

The Kamiyamada Okagara Preservation Group (of which I am a member) practices every Wednesday night. Last night for the first time, we did our practice at the stage in the middle of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen.

Normally our practices take place at a community center away from the onsen. I often took guests to see it, and not only did they enjoy it, but the lion dance members appreciated having an audience. The park's stage is a beautiful facility, and hardly gets used. So we asked City Hall if they'd let us use it, and they gave us their approval saying, "Please -- it's such a waste not to!"

Last night was our first time to hold our practice at the park, and the result was better than I thought. Not only did guests from Kamesei go see it, but from other inns, too, as well as some of the neighbors and even one geisha.

So through the summer, every Wednesday night at around 8pm, you can see our Okagura group practice at the stage in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's main park!

上山田お神楽保存会はこの上山田地区及び、上田市、善光寺等、さまざまの所で活躍しています。私は3年前ぐらいに入らせていただきましたので獅子笛を吹いています。保存会の栗原会長はとっても積極的なので、お神楽保存会のホームページを作ろうかという案を出しました。私は友人の千曲市に住んでいるロバート先生に頼んで、素敵なサイトを作ってくれました。仕上がりはこれからですが、ベースは出来まして、夕べの練習で皆さんに見せて、ＯＫが出ました。臨時的に、http://www.tomorobi.net/liondance/で見れます。良かったら、ご覧になって下さい。

The Kamiyamada Kagura (Lion Dance) Preservation Society gets around. Not only do we perform throughout Kamiyamada, but in Ueda City and Zenkoji Temple as well. And now, we have a presence on the web, too. Our chairperson, Kurihara-san, is very forward looking and floated the idea of making a website for the organization. So I talked with my buddy Robert-sensei, and had him make a nifty little home page for our group. At last night's practice, we debuted the site to the other members and got everyone's approval. There are still some things that need to be tweaked, but for now, the site is viewable at http://www.tomorobi.net/liondance/. Take a peek and let me know what you think!

戸倉上山田温泉のそばに「アットホーム」と言う老人ホームがありまして、そこで私の友人、Ｈｉｄｅさんが働いている。そして、私はこの上山田のお神楽保存会に入っていて（獅子笛を習っています）、Ｈｉｄｅさんにその話をしたら、「アットホームで獅子舞をやったら、年寄りの皆が喜ぶだろう」と言う発想が出ました。お神楽の会長さん、このブログでコメントを一生懸命書いてくれている栗原さんと相談したら、Ｇｏ！サインが出ました。
早速、昨日、アットホームで獅子舞を行いました。そこに住んでいる皆様が嬉しかったようで、尚且つ、私達お神楽のメンバーも段々と年をとっているのでこういう老人ホームにお世話になるだろうから、「下見」と言うのもあったかな？まあ、それは別として、近所の老人ホームと交流をするのは大事です。

この上山田でお神楽や日本舞踊などの踊りのグループの皆が文化の日で町の文化会館の舞台で発表が出来る。普段は一年を通して、定期的に練習したり、お祭りで踊ったりしていますが、ステージで舞う機会がなかなかないです。今日はオープニングで会館前の広場で我々上山田神楽保存会が一度舞って、その後でステージで獅子舞をやりました。私は獅子笛で緊張しましたけど、楽しかった!

Here in Kamiyamada, the lion dance group, traditional Japanese dancers and other various groups get to perform on the main stage of the Culture Hall once a year on Culture Day. Group members practice regularly throughout the year and perform all over town for festivals, but we rarely get the opportunity to perform on a stage with the bright lights and the big audience. For today's Culture Day festivities, our Kamiyamada Okagura Lion Dance group performed for the openening ceremony, and then later on the big stage in the main hall. I was nervous playing the lion flute on stage, but it was a thrill.
