(First Report From My Trip Home to Seattle)
Patchwork quilting is popular in Japan as a way for people to create something original. Here in the original home of creating, America, quilts using Japanese kimono fabric and other traditional Japanese materials is gaining in popularity. My mother is an avid quilter, and enjoys collecting Japanese fabric and making quilts such as this one, 'Maru'. We have a couple of my Mom's wall hangings at Kamesei Ryokan, including one Hawaiian style quilt of some turtles (Kamesei's 'kame') hanging in front of the baths.

久しぶりに親の家に行ったら、母親がいま作っているキルトを見せてくれました。何と日本風！アメリカのキルトの世界の中で日本風な生地（着物など）がはやっているようです。亀清にも母親の作品が飾ってあります。お風呂の前に、ハワイイ風の亀（亀清の看板動物）の作品です。

Kamesei Ryokan was proud to host a series of talks by Debito Arudo. This morning's was sponsored by the Chikuma Int'l Cultural Exchange Assoc. Approximately 20 people attended and heard about how Japan's population is becoming more international, and some of the dynamics that are resulting. On one hand, foreigners are increasingly contributing to Japan's society and economy, bringing desired effects to offset Japan's aging and shrinking population. On the other hand, foreigners are often villified in society.
In my own personal case, on one hand I am often complimented by people in town for working so hard to carry on the ryokan tradition here at Kamesei and my efforts to 'enliven' the town. On the other hand, there was a time I was refused an apartment here in Nagano simply because I was a foreigner. Of course similar prejudice happens in all countries, but here in Japan there are no laws against it. Yes, illegalizing discrimination doesn't make it go away, but that's of little comfort to someone who has been refused a basic human right like shelter.
After the talk, someone from Chikuma City Hall inquired about getting Debito-san back to give a talk to the city employees. I'm happy Kamesei was able to play a role in producing such positive results!
千曲国際交流協会の提供で、亀清旅館のロビーにArudo Debitoさんの講演が行いました。主の内容は日本の人口減少・高齢化問題に対して、外国人の増加が重要なのに、外国人は沢山の壁に当っている。自分の場合、亀清の若旦那として戸倉上山田温泉の仲間として受け入れて頂いているので色んな面で「町興し」に参加しています。しかし、以前は私が長野でアパートを借りるのに断れた事がある。もちろん、全世界に外国人差別があるけど日本の場合はそれに対する法律が無い。法律を作っても差別は消えないけれども、「衣食住」の「住」も断る事を許す事は？！？！
ところで、講演の後に市役所の方が今度、Debitoさんに千曲市役所のこの有利な講演をして欲しいと言い出した。亀清旅館が役に立てて、良かったと思います。

千曲市がインドからの留学生をホースティングしました。私が活躍している国際交流協会も関連したいました。協会がこの集まりを開きました。芸者さんの踊りにインドの伝統的の踊り、最適な交流でした。
そして、留学生が日本の温泉旅館を体験すると言う事で、私共の亀清旅館に一泊しました。皆さんは温泉を気に入ったようですが、和食はちょっと。。。朝食のご飯の上にヨーグルトをかけました。(ビックリ！）
Our Town, Chikuma, hosted a group of exchange students from India. The Int'l Exchange Assoc., of which I'm an active member, hosted a banquet for them. We were entertained by both our local geisha and a traditional Indian dance! International exchange at it's finest.
In order to let the students experience an onsen ryokan, they all spent the night here at Kamesei. They seemed to enjoy the mineral bath, but the traditional food was a little challenging. Pictured is one student with yogurt over her breakfast rice.

昨日の英字新聞ジャパンタイムズに外人に対する法律についての記事がありました。(リンクがタイトルクリックを）
ホテルとかで外人のお客さんの旅券の扱いとか。以前に私がこのブログで書いたし、ちょうど一昨日に地元の警察がまた寄って、また外人の旅券の事を言ってきました。｢法律に従いたいのでその法律を見せて｣と言ったら、「厚生労働省の方ですから私達が渡していいかどうか分からない｣と断れました。いい加減しなさい！日本の心を目指して信州に来る外国旅行者にこの差別な心を見せる？この温泉の売春問題に対して努力しないとは？ちなみに、他で調べたが、厚生労働省上では｢宿泊者が日本国内に住所を有しない外国人であるときは、その国籍及び旅券番号」を記載する事。従います。
Yesterday's Japan Times had an article on something I've touched on before with this blog: strict laws against foreigners. (Click on the title for a link to the article.) Just the day before, the local police paid us another visit and again requested we take foreign guests' passports. I asked them for a copy of the law that says that, and they declined saying it was a different Ministry's policy. What, is it a secret law?!?! Most foreign tourists coming to Nagano are searching for Japan's heart -- is this prejudiced heart what we want to show them? Why don't the police do something about the prostitution problem in this town instead?
Anyways, I found the law thru other means. MHLW requires nationality and passport #'s for non-resident foreigners. Sounds simple enough -- we'll be glad to abide.

昨日は代わった電話があった。九州から、フリーダイヤルで。｢ピンクのサービスはあるか｣と。姨捨夜景・伝説ツアーのサービスはあるけど、売春はやっていないと答えておきました。日本では平気でそういう問い合わせが出来るかい？かなりなショックでした。確かに、この戸倉上山田温泉は｢色町｣があるけど、亀清旅館では子供連れご家族やカップルさんが多いです。この宿は家族経営ですし、とにかく売春は許さない。良い事はない！
Yesterday we received a bizarre phone call asking if we provide 'pink service'. I said we offer the service of guiding guests to see the night view from Obasute Station after dinner, but no, we don't offer prostitution. I was shocked that in Japan it's acceptable to be so open about looking for prostitutes. Our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada, does have its share of bars and bar girls, but Kamesei Ryokan caters to families with kids and couples. We are a family-run inn, and I myself am Christian, so we don't permit prostitution. Nothing good comes out of it!

Armida and friend visited from Guadalajara. I took them to sushi last night. We traded sushi stories from America and Mexico with Sushi-Hei, our local sushi chef. In the States, California Roll is king, and salmon is a popular ingredient. In Japan, no Cali Rolls, and salmon is considered 'cheap'. Armida said in Mexico, the rolls often contain meat (!) and are fried. Sushi-Hei thought that meant the rolls contained fried meat, but Armida said they fry the whole rolls! Culture shock, sushi-style!
メキシコからのお二人とアメ人の私と地元の寿司屋さん、鮨平、が寿司国際交流しました。米国ではカリフォルニア巻きが一番でサーモンも人気です。日本はカリ巻きがなく、サーモンがあまり上品ではない。メキシコは巻き寿司にお肉が入っていて、そして揚げちゃう。｢中身がエビフライとか｣と聞いたら、｢いいえ、巻きはそのままで粉を付けて、揚げるんだ｣言われました。皆がお互いにビックリしました。

私は日本に長く住み過ぎているかな？アメリカのホテルの場合、予約の段階からクレジットカードが必要となる。日本の旅館の場合、カード無しで予約が出来る。亀清旅館もそう。お客様が着いた時に、｢今、払いましょうか？｣って聞かれたら、｢いいえ、お帰りになる時で良い｣となる。どれだけ信用があるかという事。
と言いながら、昨日は警察が来ちゃった。｢最近、亀清は外人客が多いそうだが、テロ関係が心配なので宜しければパスポートのコピーを取ってくれないか｣と言われた。よく考えたら、来られている外国の方の中で日本駐在の方もいる。その場合は運転免許のコピーになる？だったら、日本人のお客の免許のコピーも取るようになる？日本の旅館だからこそそんな不親切な事をする訳ない！
I've apparently been in Japan too long. Back in the States, you need a credit card to make hotel reservations. At a Japanese ryokan, not only do you not need a card to make a reservation, but no payment whatsoever is needed until you check out. Such a system of trust! But then, the local police paid us a visit yesterday. "Kamesei's been getting a lot of foreign guests lately. There are concerns about terrorists, so please get copies of passports." If you think about it, some of our foreign guests are residents here and thus don't carry passports. Should we then take copies of, say, drivers licenses? If so, why stop there? Why not take copies of our Japanese guests' licenses as well? No way -- not at this inn, here in the quiet countryside of Nagano.

私の生まれたところは日曜日の朝が教会へ行く時です。日本に来て、驚いたのは教会へ行く方が少ないし、代わりに皆がごみ・リサイクルをする。今日が当番でした。朝５時半から起きて、布団は３４枚も上げて、そしてごみ当番。旅館の若旦那の生活です。
Back on my home planet, Sunday mornings are for going to church. Here in Japan, Sunday mornings are for gathering your recyclable garbage. Today was our turn to man the garbage station. Wake up at 5:30am, flip 34 futons, and be the neighborhood garbage man.

うちの長男が１年生になりました。そのお陰で、今年は私が始めてラジオ体操を体験しました。夏｢休み｣で子供が｢休める｣と思い込んだところ、朝早起きで亀清の裏の公園で運動する？！？！第一印象：子供が可愛いそう！今日は最後のラジオ体操で夏らしい天気したが、最初の日は軽い雨でした。｢まあ、せっかく早く起きたし、息子を起こせたし、涼しい方が暑いのより気持ちいいし。。。｣と二人で公園に行きました。そうすると、他には誰も居なかった。｢騙された？」とにかく、私なりの運動(タイラー体操)をやってから戻りました。旅館に帰ったら、女将社長に｢雨で体操するバか居ないよ！｣と言われてしまいました。変わった国や！(笑い）
Back on my home planet, summer vacation is a time for kids to play. Here, kids have to wake up extra early to gather at 6:20am for 'Radio Exercises'.

今日はオーストらーリアからの二人含めて、お客さんを連れてカブトムシハンティングをしてきました。我々海外からの人たちにはショックでした。特に木を蹴って、虫がいっぱい降ってきた時！
Today we took several guests, including a couple from Australia, on a beetle hunting trip. To those of us from overseas, it was quite a culture shock. Especially when we kicked the trees and the beetles came raining down!
