Following the earthquake and tsunami induced explosion at the Fukushima nuclear plants, radiation has become a concern for travellers to Japan. Now you can leave your geiger counter at home, as Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (lovingly called MEXT for short) has began posting daily environmental radioactivity levels by prefecture on their website.

Following the nuclear plant explosion on March 15th, the radiation levels in Nagano jumped from a norm of 0.038 micro seiverts to 0.093. Since then, the rate has fallen to 0.041~0.042 micro seiverts. Have a look for yourself at the MEXT website, and rest assured that radiation levels in Nagano are safe.
