Nice wide street ending at a sidewalk-less mess -- hence the dead end to my Ox Walk improvement aspirations
毎年、戸倉上山田温泉の代表のイベントの一つが行います：牛に引かれて善光寺詣り。300人が戸倉上山田温泉から善光寺へ歩く大イベントです。今年は5月5日に行います。
我々旅館組合青年部は当番で実行委員長になりまして、今年は私の順番です。以前は3回も完歩した経験もあるし、去年は副員長として色々と見た上で、員長としていくつかな改善したいと思っていました。
せっかく「長」だから。
しかし、甘かった。こういう継続してきたイベント（今年は29回目！）は「例年通り」になると言う癖がある。去年は参加者の声で、「３０ｋｍも歩くのでおなかがつく！」と。通常はおにぎり3つを提供するだけだったので、今年はお弁当を工夫したいと思いました。が、どうしても観光協会の会員を使う義務があって、その会員は大手チェイン店なので品物は安全・安心だが、ゆずは利かない。壁に当たってしまい。
次は、歩くコース。いつも長野駅を向かって、右の方で線路を潜るけど、あまり綺麗な道じゃないのでもっと気持ち良い通りに変更したかった。駅を向かって左側に新しいトンネルがある。昨日は下見しに行きました。トンネル自体は綺麗けど、手前の道は狭くて、歩道がなくて、とってもじゃないけど300人の団体には無理。壁にまた当たってしまい。
諦めます。「例年通り」に負けました。
Every year for the past 28 years, Togura Kamiyamada Onsen has put on a special event honoring the "Pulled by an Ox to Zenkoji (the big temple in Nagano City)" legend. We sponsor a 30km by 300+ participants from our onsen to Zenkoji. This year, the event will take place on May 5th.
And every year, us innkeepers take turns being the organizing chairperson. And this year, I get the honor. These types of events tend to get dragged down into doing the same old pattern as the previous year. Since I officially get to call the shots this year, I was hoping to make a few changes to the event.
First, several of last year's participants complained about the lack of food provided (3 rice balls just doesn't cut it for a 30km walk!). So I wanted to improve the lunch. However, it turns out the lunch vendor is a member of the tourism association so we're obligated to use them. They are a franchise of a nationwide chain, so their food products are safe and reliable, just not flexible. Bang! I just ran into insurmountable wall #1.
Then, I was wanting to tweak course. We had been hitting Nagano Station and circling around to the right to go under the tracks -- a very bland, industrially boring route. There's a bright, cheery new tunnel to the left that I was hoping to use. However, yesterday I went to check it out. The tunnel itself is fine, but the approach is a sidewalk-less construction zone nightmare. Bang -- wall #2.
I give up. "Same as last year." I lost.
