一年ぶりの里帰り。我が子供とうちの親の一年ぶりの再会。

短い間に一年間の思い出を作りたい。

その道具：オリンプック国立公園への旅。その国立公園の大自然と触れ合いながら、三世代の交流をする。自然はその力がある。オリンピック国立公園は特に恵まれて、山も海もレーンフォレスト（多雨林？）もある上、温泉さえある。

山景色を眺めながら雪遊びしたり、
Ｇｒａｎｄｍａと一緒に温泉に入ったり、
ヘラジカに追いかけられながら優大な苔の多雨林にハイクしたり、
裸足で海の波と遊んだり

最高でした。

なおかつ、海辺はコンクリートのテトラポッドもなかったし、林の川にもコンクリートがなかったし、山の天辺に自動販売機はなかった。大自然：そのまま。

なぜこの話をしているかと言うと、ある旅館の先輩に言われた：　長野県は海外から観光客を呼ぶのに、「山」とか「緑」として売ろうとしているが、海外にもっとすごい山、もっと深い緑があるからもっと工夫しなきゃと。

ワシントン州のこの自然で育ってきた私は賛成です。香港と佳山のない所から来る方は違うかもしれない。

去年、亀清に泊まったスイスからのバックパッカーが上高地へ行きました。長野県の日本アルプスを代表する景色スポット。「帰国したら本番のアルプスはいつでも見れるから山景色として上高地はちょっと…　しかし、ツアーガイドの人達はすごく良かった」との感想でした。

信州の自然＋信州の人・文化。それが長野の負けない魅力だと思う。

It's been a year since my last trip home to Seattle. Our kids and their grandparents haven't seen each other for 12 months. How do you make a year's worth of memories on a short visit? Our secret: A trip to Olympic National Park. Frollicking with the natural wilderness as a family does wonders.

And Olympic NP is especially blessed with scenic beauty: not only mountains and ocean and rain forest, but an onsen, too! We tramped in the snow at Hurricane Ridge with views of the Olympic Mountains in the background, bathed with Grandma at Sol Duc Hot Springs, ran away from elk in Hoh River Valley's Hall of Mosses rain forest hike, ran barefoot in the tide at Ruby Beach, and just had a wonderful time.

And there were no concrete tetrapods at the beach, concrete embankments on the rivers in the rain forest, no vending machine at the top of of the mountains. (These are all common in Japan.) It was pure, simple nature in all of its wild beauty.

The reason I bring this up is one of my superiors in the ryokan association once told me that Nagano tries to attract foreign tourists using its mountains and nature; however there are even bigger mountains and more spectacular nature in foreign countries. Nagano has to add something unique.

Having grown up in Washington State with all of its awe-inspiring national parks, I tend to agree. While I appreciate Nagano's nature, would I travel there just for that? Maybe someone from Hongkong or other mountain-less place would.

We had a guest from Switzerland last summer who took a tour to Kamikochi, Nagano's supreme northern Alps resort. While the mountains didn't impress him (he sees the Swiss Alps all the time), he really enjoyed talking with the guides. I think that's the secret to Nagano's attractiveness -- not just the nature but the people and culture, too.
