上山田のリンゴ農家、飛田さんの今年のりんごジュースが出来上がりました。購入しに行ってきましたが、りんご畑の空気は長野の中でもやっぱり違うね！と思いました。こういう美味しい空気の中で、美味しいリンゴが出来る訳。そして、科学的なものを一切入れないで作ったこのりんごジュースがまた美味しいのです。

This season's apple juice is now available. I went to Crown Farm to pick up some cases of Tobita-san's just-bottled apple juice.

I have to say, there is something different about the air in the apple orchards. You can just feel the freshness and cleanliness as you breathe it in. This must be one of the reasons apples taste so delicious. And hence, why the apple juice is so great, too.

久しぶりの大雪！

しかし、上雪ですからすぐ溶けそう…

溶ける前に雪だるまを作ろう！

Snow! It's been a while since we've gotten so much of the white stuff.

But this snow is 'kami-yuki', meaning it came from Tokyo and the Pacific Ocean side of Japan.

That means it will melt away quickly, as opposed to snow coming from the Sea of Japan side which tends to stick around a lot longer.

Come on Misaki, let's build a snowman before the snow melts away!

と言いながら、実は亀清旅館の新年会で板長と仲居さん達と皆で小布施へお昼を食べに行きました。（残念ながら、二人のデートじゃなかった。）

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone. Did you have a romantic holiday? Mari and I spent a lovely day strolling around Obuse Town.

Actually, it wasn't for a date. It was our ryokan staff's New Year lunch.

Obuse is a really romantic town, though. Cute shops, yummy chestnut sweets, delicious restaurants, wonderful museums (including Hokusai-Kan featuring the ukkiyoe woodblock art of Hokusai).

After our stroll through Obuse, we headed back to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen for a soak in Kamesei's hot spring mineral water bath.

That in fact makes for a great date: Exploring Obuse followed by a stay at Kamiyamada Onsen.

And Kamesei Ryokan has a Anniversary Plan for that special occasion.

「幻」という言葉がどちらかというと、使わり過ぎているから、あまり使いたくない。

だが、この欧米人にとっては日本の庭園は「幻」扱いになる。

そして、雪を足せば、日本庭園＋雪景色がなお「幻」に近い。

その上に、夕暮れの光になれば、更に近付くのではないかと思います。

In Japanese, there is a word 'Maboroshi' which means 'fantastical' or like a vision. It tends to get overused in marketing, so I try to avoid it.

However, to this Westerner, the relaxing vibes that emanate from Japanese gardens strike me as being 'Maboroshi'.

And add a touch of snow, and the wintery scene becomes even more 'Maboroshi'.

And as the sun starts to go down and a soft dusky glow sets in, the garden takes on an even more 'Maboroshi' feel.

So here is a photo of Kamesei's naka-niwa central garden with fresh snow and at dusk.

昨日は大騒ぎでした。亀清旅館のロビーに鬼が入ってきました。保育園バスが寄ってから、玄関ドアから鬼が攻めてきました。

あっ、良く見たら、娘の美咲ちゃんだった！

節分は忙しい一日ですよね。お昼は戸倉上山田温泉の上のお寺さんに行き、豆負けに参加したり、夜は恵方巻きを食べたり、色々あります。（今回は南南東でした。誰がこういうのを決めるでしょう？グラウンドホグ？）

皆さんはちゃんと「鬼は外、福は内！」をちゃんとやりましたか？

Yesterday an Oni (ogre) attacked Kamesei Ryokan. Right after the Preschool bus showed up, an oni walked right into our lobby.

Wait a minute, that's just our daughter Misaki wearing an oni mask!

It's all in honor of Setsubun, the day that marks the changing of the seasons between winter and spring. In the afternoon, I took some guests up to the temple at the top of the hill behind town to participate in the celebrity bean throwing event. At night our family all ate Ehou-maki sushi rolls. "Ehou" means 'fortunate direction', and you eat the rolls facing a certain compass direction for good luck. This year it was South-Southeast. (Who decides these things -- the groundhog?)

All in all, it was a busy Setsubun.

戸倉上山田温泉の南が、千曲川沿いに万葉の里スポーツエリアがあります。野球のグラウンドやサッカーフィールド、マレットゴルフなどのスポーツ施設はありながら、川沿いに公園やラベンダー畑があり、自然も楽しめる様になっている。

今朝は近くに用事があって、寄ってみました。というのは、冬の空の空気が澄んでいて、遠くの戸隠山や高妻が綺麗に出て、公園から見てみたいと負いました。山の写真を撮ってみたが、公園の凍っている姿の方で感動しました。

「この町は何もない！」というくらい人はいます。言わせて頂けたら、何もなくて良いです。変なお工場やコンクリートの街並みじゃなく、戸倉上山田温泉はあらゆるところで驚く程な美しい景色がある。「何もない」と言っている人は見ていないだけ。

雪景色の千曲川を見下ろす戸倉の天狗。白い雪に天狗の赤と青色が素敵なコントラストとなっていました。ちょうど夕日を浴びてた時にお客さんと駅からの送迎のついでに行きました。

戸倉上山田温泉の美しさにまたホッとしました。

This is the Togura Tengu, our local goblin, looking down over a wintery Chikuma River valley. His red and blue coloring contrasts so vividly with the white snow on the ground. I happened to go just as the setting sun's rays streamed through the cold winter air and gave the Tengu a slight glow.

Once again, I was struck by the beauty of our onsen town, Togura Kamiyamada.

戸倉上山田温泉もそうですが、温泉の近辺のりんご畑も雪で真っ白になっています。農家さん達は雪があっても、剪定を始まっています。大変な作業でしょう。そして、亀清旅館のロビーに薪ストーブがあり、剪定物を薪の為に頂に行きます。それこそ、大変な作業です。まあ、取り敢えず、りんご畑の美しい雪景色を楽しみましょう。

Not only here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, but also the apple orchards nearby are covered in elegant white snow. Even with snow, the apple growers have to start pruning the trees. That must be hard work. And then people like us here at Kamesei Ryokan with wood burning stoves go around to the orchards and collect the trimmings to use as fire wood. But lets not think about work right now -- let's just enjoy the beautiful winter scenery.

信州の冬はやっと来ました。１月１５日の週末から雪が降り出して、大分積もりました。一方では、久しぶりの雪掛けですが、もう一方では雪景色にならないと信州の冬らしくない；亀清の庭が白くなって、ほっとしました。そして露天風呂もあります。外の温泉のお湯を浴びながら、雪が顔にちらちらと降るのは日本の温泉の一番良い所。

Nagano's archetypical snowy winter has arrived in full force. The snow started snowing from the weekend of the 15th, and has been piling up since then. With day time temperatures as high (?) as -4 C, the white stuff will be sticking around for a while.

On one hand, I have mixed feelings about getting out the snow shovels, but on the other hand, Kamesei's gardens look so peaceful and pretty when blanketed in snow. And then there's the outdoor bath -- soaking in the onsen water as snowflakes fall on your face is the quintessential onsen experience.

今年の冬はこの戸倉上山田温泉で、完全な雪景色にまだ一度もなっていません。もう少し北や上に行けば、真っ白になりますが、我が温泉の標高は370ｍぐらいしかなくて、なおかつ温泉街の地面は割と温かいせいか、雪が比較的にすくくない地域です。でも、少しは雪景色をお客様に提供したいと思っていて…

This year, we haven't had a full blanketing of snow yet. A flurry here and there, but nothing to write home about. If you go a little further north or up a bit higher, you can see a snowy winter wonderland. But down here (our elevation at Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is only 370 meters above sea level), especially with all the onsen water pipes running everywhere, we don't get a lot of snow accumulation. But this year has been unusually snow-less.
