日本のリンゴ生産の技術がすごいです。
知れば知るほど、感心します。
知れば知るほど、あれだけ大きくて美しくておいしいリンゴが出来るのにどんな苦労がかかっているか分かります。

上山田のリンゴ農家、飛田さんに誘われて、美味しいリンゴが出来る為の作業の一つを体験しました：花摘み。

飛田さんの「クラウン農園」リンゴ畑が十一面観音で有名の智識寺の近辺です。子供達を連れて、お邪魔しました。飛田さんが親切に花の積み方を教えてくれて、子供達も楽しんで体験できました。

来年は「プチ農業体験プラン：りんご花摘み」を計画したいと思っています。今回の体験はその下見を兼ねてやりました。信州の自然の楽しみ方の一つとして、旅館のお客様に案内したいと思っています。

It never ceases to amaze me how much effort goes into growing apples in Japan. Once you see how much work the apple growers do, you will realize it's no wonder they make such magnificent, perfect fruit.

One of our local Kamiyamada growers, Tobita-san from Crown Farm, invited me to his orchard to try my hand at one of the many aspects of apple growing: blossom thinning.

Crown Farm's orchards are located nearby Chishiki-ji Temple. I took our two sons to the orchards and Tobita-san carefully explained the procedure on how to thin the blossoms. It was easy enough for even our kids to do. Plus it was a lot of fun being out in the clean air amongst all the apple trees. Our #2 son, Kenny in particular enjoyed climbing the trees to reach the higher blossoms!

Next year, I am hoping to offer a 'Mini Farm Experience Plan' and provide our guests a chance to be an apple grower for a day. First I wanted to try it myself. Now next season, hopefully we'll be able to let guests enjoy working in an apple orchard, too.

今作っている戸倉上山田温泉周辺のハイキングマップの為に、三峰山の登り口の下見で、昨日は子供達と一緒に行ってみました。

最初はハイキングの道が良く分からなくて、えらい迷いました。戻ってきて、別な登り口を探して、「あっ、これなら安心でマップで紹介が出来るやな」と思いました。今回は登る時間がなかったから、また後日でリベンジ。

道を迷いながら、大池でこんな綺麗な水芭蕉を見つけました。大池はピックニックスポットもあるし、テントのキャンプグラウンドもあり、子供のアスレチックもあり、夏は涼しくて良いし、お勧めなレジャースポットです。

以前からは亀清の玄関に鯉のぼりを飾っていました。ちょっとさみしい短い鯉でした。今日は親戚からで～かい(長さ4ｍ！)の鯉を頂きました。紐を上げなきゃいけなかったぐらい長い。

これで連休にお越しになる皆様に元気なＨａｐｐｙ　Ｇｏｌｄｅｎ　Ｗｅｅｋ！の挨拶になります。

We've had 'koi nobori' carp streamers up at the entrance to our inn now for several years for every Golden Week. But the ones we had were kind of scrawny. One of our relatives brought us some huuuuuuge ones (4 meters in length!). I had to raise the rope, they were so long!

So now we have a much more energetic "Happy Golden Week!" greeting for our inn.

信州の花の時期がまだまだ続いています。小諸市の親戚から聞きましたが、ちょうど今は懐古園の桜が満開だそうです。

そして、我が宿の庭の所々にも花が咲いてきています。取り敢えず、一番目立つ中庭のモクレンと渡り廊下のヤマブキの写真を提供したいと思います。ちょうどゴールデンウィークをマイに合うような咲き方してくれて、この連休でお越しになる皆様はきっと喜ぶでしょう。

Nagano's spring flower show is still going on. I heard from a relative living in Komoro City that the famous sakura trees in the Kaikoen castle grounds are in full bloom right now.

And here at Kamesei Ryokan, plants and trees are blooming left and right. Two of the more showy ones are the magnolia tree in our naka-niwa main garden and the intensely bright yellow 'yamabuki' (Kerria japonica) along our watari-roka passageway.

They are blooming seemingly just in time for the big Golden Week holiday. Our guests for this peak travel season will no doubt enjoy our garden's flowers.

天狗さんの花見は今年、長く続いていますね。

The Tengu Park above Togura Station is still full of color from the cherry blossoms. I stopped by with some guests after picking them up at the station. The trees on the hill overlooking the Chikuma River valley and Togura Kamiyamada Onsen were still in bloom. Although some were starting to leaf out, it was still a beautiful sight.

This year, Togura Tengu's flower viewing is lasting an extra long time!

戸倉駅の上のキティパークのさくらも満開になりました。でかい天狗で(地元で)有名な公園で、桜の名所です。

先日は家族でプッチ花見しました。子供達は花より、団子より、公園の長～い滑り台を喜んだけど、私たち夫婦は夕日の桜を楽しめた。

今週末は戸倉上山田温泉にお越しになったら、キティパークの桜を見に行く価値があります。温泉街から車で10分ぐらい。

天狗に宜しくをお伝えください。

Kitty Park above Togura Station is at it's cherry blossom prime right now. Our family went there a couple of evenings ago for a mini flower viewing 'Hanami' party. The kids were more interested in playing on the the park's extra long slide, but Mari and I enjoyed the beautiful blossoms lit up by the evening sun.

Kitty Park's most famous resident is a huge Tengu -- a Japanese mythical goblin. He appeared to be happy surrounded by all the pretty cherry trees.

If you're headed to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen this weekend, I highly suggest stopping to see the cherry blossoms at Kitty Park. It is only 10 minutes by car from our inn.

If you do, please say 'hi' to the Tengu for us.

長野市篠ノ井地区の光林寺に昨日、寄ってみました。そうすると、しだれ桜が見事に満開でした。

今年はちなみに長野市の「篠ノ井イヤー」だそうです。長野市は合併で松代から鬼無里までの広い地域になりました。市の観光協会が毎年違い地区にスポットライトをあたえて、「どこかいやー」としているそうです。

その篠ノ井イヤーの中で、篠ノ井のどこを観光としてＰＲするかという課題がある。善光寺でもお城でも歴史スポットでも自然スポットでも何もない；住宅とりんご畑の地区です。

観光に向こうとしているのは茶臼山動物園(キリンに餌やり体験やレッサーパンダで特徴的）と「お見合い風呂」で話題性のある中尾山温泉ぐらいです。先日に地元のテレビでの篠ノ井イヤーの番組でやはりその動物園とお見合い風呂が紹介された。

しかし、私が思いますが、こっちに住んでいる人達には普通な生活の中で地元の動物園とか地元の変わったお風呂に行くと分かるけど、「観光」としてはどうかと思います。例えば、北信に住んでいる私が南信の動物園や変わったお風呂へ態々行くかと聞かれたら、ん…となっちゃう。県外からはもっとん…となるでしょう。だって、東京の方は上野動物園でレッサーパンダじゃなくて本物のパンダはいつでも見れる訳。

光林寺の桜の話でしたよね。

この桜は、言わせて頂けたら、観光スポットとしてかなりウィートがあると思います。桜の木が素晴らしいし、眺めも良いし、お寺が立派だし、お寺の門が見事です。なぜこんなところにこんな素敵なお寺があるのか、不思議です。その門に武田信玄のマークがあった；これも不思議です。

色々と質問があったが、案内人は一人もいなくて、残念でした。沢山の観光客がいたけど、ガイドがいれば皆が更に満足したのではないかと思います。

光林寺を観光として見落としている長野観光協会はまた不思議です.

千曲市「あんずの里」は花見の時期に込む事があります。あんずの花の薄いピンク風情は人気があって、遠くから大勢が見に来るわけです。

しかし、実はあんずの里は２つの谷の事です：代表の森地区と比較的に知られていない倉科地区です。森は谷中に杏の木なので、満開の時には見事です。でも、倉科は倉科で、杏の木の良い雰囲気です。

週末は子供達と一緒に行ってみました。その時に撮った写真を提供します。

Chikuma City's 'Anzu no Sato' Apricot Village can be crowded during apricot blossom time. But actually the 'village' comprises two valleys, the popular Mori valley and the lesser-known Kurashina valley.

While Mori valley is breathtakingly beautiful when covered in apricot blossoms, Kurashina's apricot trees are quite charming as well.

Last weekend, I took our kids there for a bit of 'hanami' flower viewing fun. Here are some pictures of Kurashina's apricot blossoms.

あんずの花の世界では２つ日間が大きいです。木曜日に若女将とデートで(しつこいかな？)千曲市森「あんずの里」地区に行ったら、あんずの花はまだ２，３部だけでした。昨日、もう一度行ったら、満開でした。週末であんずの花を見に行った皆様はきっと、大喜び。

In the world of apricot blossoms, 2 days makes a huge difference. On Thursday, I went on a date with my wife to Apricot Village in Chikuma City's Mori district to see if the namesake apricot trees were in bloom or not. They were only at 20-30% at that time. Then I went again on Saturday, and was thrilled to see that they were in full bloom! Weekend visitors were no doubt thrilled to be able to enjoy the apricot blossoms and their subtle pink beauty. Mori's laid back farming village setting makes for such a quaint background to the apricot trees. I highly suggest a trip to see them.

森「あんずの里」は戸倉上山田温泉から車で約２５分。電車はしなの鉄道「屋代」からバス。 The Mori 'Apricot Village' is 25 minutes by car from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, or can be accessed by bus from Yashiro Station on the Shinano Railway line.

亀清旅館の裏にある中央公園が戸倉上山田温泉の一番の花見スポットです。毎年、おかみの会が公園で屋台を開いて、おでんやビールなどを販売する。今年は４月１６日と１７日(今日、明日)でやる予定です。

昨日のお昼に公園を通ったら、おかみさん達が一生懸命テント張りしていました。そういう作業は男の仕事とは別に言いませんが、こういう時に私の背の高さが役に立つと思って、手伝ってあげました。今晩は布団引きの作業が終わったら、皆で張ったテントのところでおでんを買いに行こうかな！

ちなみに、今年は桜が例年より１週間ぐらい遅く咲いているので、おかみの会の屋台予定に間に合わないと心配しました。しかし、さすがおかみさん達、ちょうどいいタイミングで咲いてきました。今週末のお客さん達は公園の桜をきっと楽しんで頂けるでしょう。

Chuo Kouen, the park behind Kamesei Ryokan, is the main cherry blossom spot here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. Every year, the Okami-no-kai group of proprietresses sets up a tent and serves food and drinks to the flower viewing revelers. This year the tent will be in operation on April 16th and 17th (today and tomorrow).

Yesterday, I happened to walk by the park as the ladies were putting up the tent. Not that tent making is a man's job, but I figured my height my come in handy, so I decided to help out. Now I'm looking forward to going tonight after my futon flipping work is done and getting some yummy yakitori chicken.

This year, we've had a chilly start to spring and the cherry blossoms are a week later than normal as a result. I was worried that the trees wouldn't be in bloom by the time the ladies' tent starts. But those proprietress' have a sixth sense for these sort of things -- the trees just started blooming yesterday so flower viewing can proceed as hoped! I'm sure this weekend's guests will enjoy the blossoms.
