Two cities in northern Nagano sent their most recent brochures on their flower festivals to us: Iiyama City's Nanohana Festival and Nakano City's Rose Festival.

Iiyama Nanohana Festival 2012
May 3rd - 5th
Bright yellow nanohana (rapeseed) flowers with the blue Chikuma River and the snow-covered Madarao Mountain in the distance.
Enjoy a nanohana maze, live music performances, tea ceremonies and more.
Shuttle bus service from Iiyama Station.
Approx. 1 hour from Togura-Kamiyamada by car.
(Last year, I went on a date to see the flowers with my wife and daughter. The color contrasts made for a beautiful picture.)

June 1st - 24th.
Special guest speakers by a rose gardener and a rose sommelier. Perfume making, too.
Free shuttle busses from Nakano Station. Special train and park entrance packages available. Approx. 50 minutes by car from Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen.

2011年12月に出来た亀清旅館の貸し切り露天風呂「しなの風呂」の庭の初春です。節分草から始まって、続いてカタクリ草、そして今はこの白い花、オオバナエンレイソウ。

木の葉っぱも段々と出てきているしもっと「緑」した庭になってきています。

新しく出来た貸切風呂は評判が良いので、ご利用なされたい場合はどうぞ、フロントの方へ申し付けてください。

Kamesei Ryokan's recently completed "Shinano-buro" private outdoor bath is enjoying its first spring. The garden is starting to come alive with a parade of flowers. First the setsubunsou, then the katakurisou (dog tooth violet), now the trillium.

I have to admit, I am partial to trillium. It is native to my place of birth, the Pacific Northwest. I always enjoyed seeing trillium during my hikes in the mountains around Seattle. So I am very pleased to see it now in our new outdoor bath's garden.

You, too, and enjoy it now. Our Shinano-buro is available for use for 45 minute time slots for 2,100 yen. Come and help celebrate its first spring.

森「杏の里」のあんずまつりは4月3日から始まったのに、「花は？」と皆が悩んでいます。戸倉上山田温泉・千曲市の春の代表のイベントなのに、花が咲かないと…

一昨日は千曲市の市長が「開花宣言」を発表したそうですが、私が見ている限りでまだまだ蕾だ。

今日はまた確認したら、禅透院の周辺は部分的に咲いてきていました。写真を見て頂けたら分かると思いますが、花を充分楽しめるようになってきたので「タイラー's開花宣言」を発表したいと思います。

中間地と上の方はこれからさき始まります。週末（21日・22日）は見ごろだと思います。この機会で、千曲市・戸倉上山田温泉へ、是非おいでやす！

今週は鹿教湯温泉の斎藤ホテルの日帰りオプショナルツアーは2回も亀清旅館にお越しになってくれました。森地区「杏の里」のあんずまつりのついでに戸倉上山田温泉・我が宿にお昼ご飯を食べに来ました。

杏の里の花は残念ながらまだ咲いていなかったけど、亀清で美味しいお当時を食べれて、私の「姨捨山伝説」語り部を聞けて、そして亀清旅館の客室「千歳」の庭の杏の木の花を見れました。（なぜか、この木は森地区の木より早く咲きました。）

斎藤ホテルの「斎藤駕籠屋」ツアーで駒ヶ根ロープウェーや高遠の桜など、毎日にオプショナルツアーをやっています。以前に「戸倉上山田も組んでください」と営業してみました。今回の杏ツアーに私の叶いは実現できました。齊藤ホテル、有難うございました。これからも宜しくお願い致します。

戸倉上山田・周辺千曲市の春の代表イベント：　森「杏の里」あんずまつり

祭りは4月3日から始まったが、花は？　この冬は寒かったせいか、花が遅れています。

4月10日に森へ行ってみましたが、咲いているのは唯一この1本だけでした。

しかし、天気は段々と温かくなってきていますので、週末あたり（4月14～15日）は良いのではないかと思います。また報告しますのでお楽しみに。

The main spring event for Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen and our city of Chikuma-shi is the apricot blossom festival in Mori district's "Apricot Village". Normally the entire valley would be covered by the whitish-pink delicate flowers, but since this winter has been so cold, the blossoms are delayed.

This picture is from when I went to check it out on April 10th. This was the only apricot tree in the entire valley that was blooming. However, temperatures have started to get warmer. I anticipate that by this weekend, April 14th and 15th, the trees should be in bloom. Will keep you posted.

長野県は元々平均年齢の長い日本の中でまた長い方です。その秘密は？　調べによると発酵食品の影響もありそうです。信州味噌、野沢菜などの漬物、酒粕などの発酵食品は長野県では比較的に皆が食べています。

私ども長野県旅館組合青年部がその３つ（みそ、漬物、酒粕）を利用した「まぁーず」という名前のソースを浸透するように努力しています。

亀清旅館では、Chef武井の新しい「まぁーず」の一品はデビューしました。「まぁーず土手焼き」です。牛のばら肉の上にオリジナルまぁーずソースがかけてあります。地元の高村商店の信州味噌、地元の酒蔵「姨捨正宗」からの酒粕と刻んだ沢庵。この時期でなかに蕗味噌も足してあります。

お客様に言われましたが、「このソースが美味しくて、残りを御飯の上に乗せて食べました」と喜んでくれました。

またヒットな一品が生まれましたようでございます。

戸倉上山田温泉・千曲市の代表の春イベントは森地区「あんずの里」のあんずまつりです。本来ならば４月の頭から始まるけど、今年は花咲きが遅れています。いつから咲き始まるか、皆が楽しみにしています。

亀清旅館の客室「千歳」に一昨年に杏の木を植えました。見たら、ほとんどまだつぼみ状態ですが、いくつかの花が開きました。明日は森地区に行ってみますの又現地からの状況を報告したいと思います。

この長い冬はやっと終わって、あんずの花そして春が始まりますかな？

本来なら、祭りはもう始まっていますがこの冬は温度が低くて、花は遅れています。あんずの里へ行ってみましたが、写真の様にまだつぼみ状態です。恐らく４月１０あたりから咲くのかな？

The main event our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada looks forward to every spring is the apricot blossoms in nearby Mori "Apricot Village". The corresponding festival is scheduled to start already, but because we had such a cold winter, the flowers are later than usual.

I went to Mori to check on the blossom status, but as you can see by the picture, the trees are just starting to bud. Locals say they expect the trees to start blooming around April 10th.

I will keep this blog updated with the progress, but let's all say together, "It's time for spring to have sprung!"

亀清旅館の看板動物、うちの中庭の亀さんが冬眠から起きてきました。池の側の庭に上って、甲羅干ししている姿を今年、初めて見ました。

亀さん、久しぶりです。

温かくなってきて、春はそろそろ来るとの事でしょうか？

Kamesei Ryokan's name roughly translates to "Holy Turtle". Hence, we consider the turtle living in the koi pond in our naka-niwa central garden our namesake animal. Today, I spotted him sunning himself on a rock next to the pond. This is the first time this year -- he's been in hibernation all winter.

Nice to see you again, Mr. Turtle.

With the temperatures starting to warm up, and now our turtle starting to make an appearance, it must mean that spring is just around the corner.

千曲市・戸倉上山田温泉周辺の森地区「あんずの里」は日本一あんずの産地として知られています。４月の頭に花が咲くと確かに見事に綺麗です。

実は、戸倉上山田温泉のすぐ隣の若宮地区にも杏の産地があります。千曲川の川辺、戸隠山と良い図な山の背景で、負けないぐらいな景色です。なおかつ、温泉街から歩いて行ける距離です。

杏宝園の金子さんに連れて頂いて、彼らの作っている商品を見たり、そして畑の方に案内して頂きました。

この冬はふだんより寒かったせいか、今年の杏の花は１～２週間遅れているようです。４月１０日あたりかな？写真の様に、蕾さえまだ出ていません。

杏宝園は活発的にあんずの商品や栽培を開発しています。彼らのHPによると、

「杏宝園は農業生産法人株式会社ＡＦＴの自社農園で、信州千曲市においてあんずの生産量が一番多い農園です。

平成23年11月に6次産業に認定されました。
杏宝園では規定の農薬より濃度を薄めて散布し、化学肥料も少量にして自然堆肥を活用し栽培しています。

土壌の浄化を考えて炭も使用しています。

杏宝園のオリジナル商品はすべて自家農園で育ったあんずを使用しているので安心、安全です。

あんずの種類も多種類栽培しています。」

応援したい農家です。杏宝園のあんずコンフィチュールや半ドライアプリコットお土産を亀清旅館で扱う予定でございます。

Chikuma City and our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada are proud of our Mori "Anzu-no-Sato" Apricot Village. This district is Japan's largest producer of apricots.

Actually though, right here next to Togura-Kamiyamada is another apricot growing area, Wakamiya. Located along the Chikuma River with Togakushi and Iizuna Mountains in the background, Wakamiyama makes for a beautiful setting in its own rite to see apricot blossoms. And, it's a short enough distance to walk from the onsen town.

One of the growers, Kaneko-san of Kyouhouen, gave me a tour of their facilities, including a taste of many of their apricot products, as well as their apricot orchards.

Usually the apricot trees bloom in the beginning of April. However, due to the colder than usual winter we've been having, look for the blossoms to start around April 10th. As you can see by the picture, the buds haven't even started to form yet.

Kyouhouen prides itself in using as minimal as possible chemical pesticides and maximizing natural fertilizers. They are proactive in developing new varieties of apricots, and are busy working on many exciting products using their fruit.

Here at Kamesei, we are scheduled to offer their apricot confiture as well as their half-dried apricots.

This April, do come see Mori's "Apricot Village", but also come and enjoy the apricot blossoms at Kyouhouen's orchard. Ask us at Kamesei and we will gladly explain the way.
