Kamesei Ryokan's Chef Takei changes the menu for his kaiseki-style dinner as the seasons change. As we are transitioning from cold, snowy winter and looking forward to the cherry and apricot trees blossoming in the spring, the 'sansai' wild mountain vegetables are starting to awake under the snow.

餅つきの準備は無事に出来て、1月3日の朝に亀清旅館のロビーに餅つき大会を開催しました。お客さんにも参加して頂いて、楽しく美味しく出来た。
上山田神楽保存会の皆が集まって頂いて、まずはロビーで獅子舞。そして笛のリズムに合わせて、三人制度の餅つき。東京とかイタリアなどからのお客さんも参加して、国際的でした。
でも、一番喜んだのは恐らく女将社長。何十年振りの餅つきで、嬉しかった様。
これで道具を揃えたので、来年に是非また挑戦したい。
With the Mochi Tsuki preparations successfully completed, we held a Mochi pounding event at our lobby here at Kamesei Ryokan on the morning of January 3rd.
First, the members of the Kamiyamada Shishi Lion dance troupe performed a New Years lion dance. Then, accompanied by there flutes, we did a 3-person Mochi pounding. Some of the guests, including people from as far away as Tokyo and even Italy participated in the pounding.
It was a great success, but I think the person who was the happiest was Mari's mom. Apparently they used to hold such events at the inn decades ago. She was glad to see the tradition brought back after all those years.
Now that we have all the equipment, I'm looking forward to doing the Mochi making again next year.

明けましておめでとうございます！
亀清旅館はこの時に、下降１年間にお泊りになった皆様にお礼として年賀状をお送りします。今回はテレビの取材やら、友人が海外から遊びに来てくれた事やら、色々とバタバタしていて遅れましたが、
亀清旅館の２０１３年の年賀状に使った写真はこれです。

皆様のクリスマスはいかがでしたか？

私達家族がクリスマスイーブに電車に乗って、松本で買い物、食事、そしておミサに行きました。

クリスマスの朝はロビーのクリスマスツリーの下にサンタさんから届いたギフトが沢山ありました。薪ストーブに火を付けて、子供達と盛り上がりながら、プレゼントを開けました。

その部分はクリスマスらしくて、良かった。それからは子供達が学校、私は会議２つや新聞の取材、そして夜のお客様でまた普通な日々に戻りました。これからクリスマスからお正月に切り替え。

私達家族は毎年のクリスマス・イヴでどこか軽井沢とか安曇野などに出かけて、ちょっと買い物したりちょっと美味しい物を食べたり、ちょっとイルミネーションを観たりしている。
今年は皆で電車で松本まで出かけて行った。お互いに何のプレゼントなら喜ぶかと考えながらパルコや中町で買い物したり、町のイルミネーションを楽しんだり、別で紹介しますが美味しいお店で食べたり、そして最後は松本のカトリック教会でミサに行きました。
松本城の背景の良い家族のクリスマス・イヴとなりました。クリスマスの思い出を作りたい皆様に、お勧めです。

Our family's Christmas Eve tradition here in Nagano has been to take a trip together to Karuizawa or Azumino or somewhere to enjoy a bit of shopping, eat some yummy food, and take in the Christmas lights. This year, we took the train to Matsumoto for Christmas Eve.

While pondering what presents each of us would enjoy the most, we wandered around Parco and Nakamachi doing some shopping. Lots of stores were lit up for the holidays so we pranced around the glimmering lights. As I'll explain later, we found two excellent restaurants to treat ourselves to some culinary delights. And to top it off, we attended mass at the Matsumoto Catholic Church.

It was a Christmas Eve with Matsumoto Castle as the backdrop. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to make a memorable holiday experience.

自分の中でクリスマスの思いの大きな一つはツリーのオーナメント。毎年にお互いにプレゼントして年々に増えて来たオーナメントを家族の皆でツリーに飾る習慣。一つ一つは良い思い出。

亀清旅館のロビーにツリーと私達家族のオーナメントが飾ってあります。これからは亀清のＦａｃｅｂｏｏｋでも「今日のオーナメント」とそれぞれのストーリーを紹介したいと思っております。良かったら、ご覧になって下さい。

It is no doubt different from person to person,
from country to country.

For me, one of my most cherished Christmas traditions is decorating the tree with ornaments. Every year we give and get new ornaments, and every year our collection gets a little larger. And each ornament has a story to tell.

Our family's ornament collection can be seen on the Christmas tree we have in our lobby here at Kamesei Ryokan. You are welcome to come and take a look. And I will be posting pictures of them and explaining their stories on our Kamesei Ryokan facebook page.

10日に朝に起きたら、戸倉上山田は雪のパラダイスになっていました。亀清旅館の中庭がこんなに綺麗でした。

あれから温度の低い日日が続いていまして、雪が所々に残っています。いきなり1月中旬の天気のようになった。その分、ホワイトクリスマスは期待してます！

道がもう大丈夫ですが、この時期に信州に車でお越しの皆様は道状況をよく確認しましょう。

When we woke up on the morning of December 10th, we were treated by a winter wonderland. All of our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada was covered in snow. Kamesei Ryokan's naka-niwa garden koi pond looked especially peaceful.

Since then, we've had low temperatures all week so the snow is staying around in places. It's been mid-January-like weather. But it's gotten my hopes up for a white Christmas!

The roads around town are all bare already. However, for anyone driving to Nagano this winter, it is best to check road conditions first.

亀清旅館のロビーはまた今年、クリスマスになりました。

Once again this year we have decorated Kamesei Ryokan's lobby for Christmas.

亀清旅館 Kamesei Ryokan

親戚のみどりさんが亀清旅館に遊びに来てくれて、この「秋」の作品を飾ってくれました。この秋の暮れのお客さんの皆さんが楽しんで頂けるように、亀清旅館のお風呂と渡り廊下の分かれるところで飾ってあります。秋の信州の自然をどうぞ、楽しんでください。

Our cousin Midori-san visited Kamesei Ryokan again and made this flower arrangement to display in our main passageway. A little touch of the end of Fall to give a flourish to the season for our guests.

これ以上、紅葉は綺麗になれないぐらい、亀清旅館のそれぞれの庭の木の葉っぱが素晴らしい色になってきました。

「紅葉見で売っている所に泊まっても、こんなモミジがないよ」と客室「夕映」をご利用なされたお客さんが喜んでいました。（その部屋の障子が雪見のタイプです。この頃は、紅葉見障子に切かわれました。）

これから信州は寒い季節になるけど、そうなる前の自然からの最後のプレゼントの様。

It doesn't get any prettier than this. The leaves in all of the trees in Kamesei Ryokan's many gardens are at the peak of their fall colors right now.

The guests who stayed in our guestroom "Yubae" exclaimed that our garden's autumn foliage is better than any hotel who sells themselves as a place to see the fall leaves. They couldn't stop taking pictures of the view from their room.

Nagano is entering into its bitterly cold winter season. But before we do, Mother Nature is treating us to one last show of color.
