松本は…
国宝の松本城、
北アルプスの玄関、
小澤征爾とのサイトウ・キネン・フェスティバル
…などある様に、国際的な町。
その中でもう一つ国際基準な場所がある：

日本浮世絵博物館

会議の為に松本へ行ったついでに館長の酒井邦男さんに挨拶しに行きました。今の展示「富士山の文化＆日本の音楽Ⅱ」を見させて頂きました。

酒井さんは十一代目となる。酒井家六代目の酒井平助義明(d.1842)から浮世絵の収集が始まったそうです。大手な問屋さんだった方で芸術に興味があったところから始まって、今は世界最大の浮世絵コレクションで10万点以上あるそうです。現在も国内外で展示会や浮世絵の研究の実施など貴重な活動なされている。

事前に問合せをすれば酒井館長がいらっしゃれば展示されている浮世絵を説明してくれることがあります。それ無くても、それぞれの絵に説明文書があるので、十分楽しめる。

私が行く度に勉強になります。今回は黒船のペリーの浮世絵もあって、私の地元のアメリカと日本の深い繋がりをなお、感じました。

and add one more item to the list of reasons Matsumoto is such an internationally acclaimed city:

The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum.

On the way to a recent meeting in Matsumoto, I stopped in to the museum to speak with Kunio Sakai, the head curator. Kunio-san is the 11th generation of the Sakai family, historically one of Matsumoto City's wealthiest wholesalers. The 6th generation Heisuke Yoshiaki-san had an interest in the arts and started the ukiyo-e collection which has since grown to the largest in the world comprising of over 10,0000 prints. The museum holds showings both throughout Japan and overseas and is a 'living collection' that is constantly expanding and providing research into both classic and modern ukiyo-e.

The current exhibit is entitled "The Heritage of Mt. Fuji" and "Japanese Music II". Fuji-san was recently selected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, hence the exhibit about Japan's most famous mountain. And the Music series highlights the influence from the West, including an ukiyo-e portait of Commodore Perry of Black Ships fame. Ukiyo-e has a habbit of bringing me closer to the ties that connect Japan and my home country of America.

松本の日本浮世絵博物館 Matsumoto's Japan Ukiyo-E Museum

戸倉上山田温泉から県道498号と494号のくねくねした山みちを通れば聖湖に辿り着く。湖沿いに聖博物館がある。人口3017人（平成25年7月1日現在）の小さい麻績村の小さい博物館。数年前に家族で行きましたが、蝶々の展示や剥製カモシカ、謎な戦闘機。つまり、博物館実態が博物館って感じ。

しかし、偉いなのは寂びて行っちゃうことを許さずに、一年間ぐらい休館して改造工事した。麻績宿を重点して善光寺街道や周辺の紬歴史に合わせて展示をリニューアルした。今までなかったかわら版を作り出して、地方の新聞に折り込んで運と宣伝するようになった。生まれ変わった聖博物館の諦めない精神にエール！

ちなみに、私ども家族の夏の日帰りドライブの気に入る行き先が聖湖です。湖でボートを乗ったり、湖沿いのレストランで地元の食材に特化した料理を食べて、三峰山のリフトで頂上まで行ってスライダーで下りて、そしてこの聖博物館。聖湖は割と穴場的な存在で真夏でもあまり混まない。お勧めです！

The Hijiri Museum in little population 3,017 Omi Village had been quite outdated -- almost a museum in and of itself with stuffed mountain goats on display, a butterfly collection, and some WWII remnant aircraft and missile launchers. But the local folks decided to not let their quaint museum rust in to oblivion. They closed it down for a year to remodel it. Now the museum is celebrating its reopen with displays featuring the local silk making history as well as the Zenkoji Kaiko road between Matsumoto and Nagano City, on which Omi-juku was one of the post towns.

駒ヶ根に行った時についでに観光案内所・駒ヶ根ファームズの道の駅に寄りました。その裏にでかい吊り橋「こまくさ橋」があって、渡ってみると「森と緑のアウトドア体験広場」がありました。太田切川沿いの公園で、山野草の庭やクライミングウォールがあって、「これはまた時間がある時にもっと深く探検しよう」と思いました。

そして、川の側に不思議な看板があった。
「危険だから入るな」
ではなくて、
「自分の身を自分で守ろう」
って書いてあった。

つまり、川で遊んでおいで♪　…との事。

保守的な日本でこんな親切な場所があるんだ！絶対にこの夏は子供達を連れて川で遊びたいと思った。

駒ヶ根・太田切川「森と緑アウトドア体験広場」は中央道駒ヶ根ICから降りて約５分で、南信にお越しになる際、お勧めなスポットです。

During my recent trip to Komagane in southern Nagano Prefecture, I stopped at the Komagane Farms visitors center. Behind the center crossing the Odakiri River is a grand suspension walking bridge, Komakusa-bashi. On the other side is the Mori to Midori Outdoor Experience Park. With a alpine flower garden and a climbing wall, I thought the park definitely deserves another trip for further exploration.

Then I spotted a sign by the river. Instead of "Dangerous -- Do Not Enter", it said "Enter at Your Own Risk". In other words, "Come play in the river!" Here in conservative Japan! What a refreshing concept.

I can't wait to come back this summer with our kids to play in the river!

森と緑アウトドア体験広場 Mori to Midori Outdoor Experience Park

信州は本当に自然で恵まれている。先日は子供達を連れて、野尻湖でキャンプしました。朝に早く起きて、日の出が見えました。北信の雄大の山々に静かな野尻湖、絵のような空と湖での反射、信州の大自然でホッとしました。

子供達に見せれて、良かった。

野尻湖のキャンプ場は湖沿いという贅沢な場所。そこで泳げるし、ボートもある、湖遊びはたっぷりできる。真夏はきっと混むだろうけど私達が行った初夏の平日で貸切状態だった。キャンプの料金は高目に感じたけどお水、トイレ、料理場などの設備は完備だった。

まあ、その日の出はいくらお金を払っても買えないから。

Nagano Prefecture is blessed with spectacular natural scenery. Recently I took our kids to go camping at Nojiri Lake in northern Nagano. We were treated to one of the most beautiful sunrises. It made me realize even more just how special Nagano is.

I was so happy to be able to share that time with our kids.

The Nojiri Lake campground is located right at a swimming beach on the lake. You simple can't beat the location. I'm sure it gets crowded in the middle of the summer, but the day we went, a weekday at the start of summer, we had the place to ourselves. The campground seemed a bit pricey, but considering the water, toilet and cooking facilities, and that amazing view, it's worth it.

菅平は日本のラグビーメッカです。真夏でも涼しい菅平高原は既に日本一流大学のラグビー合宿として愛されている。これだけ良いグラウンド（108枚も！）、良い設備がそろっていて、分かる様な気がする。2019年のラグビーW杯は日本で開催されるって菅平の影響が少なくないと思う。世界からのラグビー団の合宿の為にすでに準備が必死。

先日は長野県旅館青年部の集まりでサッカー大会を菅平の一つなグラウンドでやりました。贅沢でした！あの雄大の山々の麓であの素敵なグラウンドで我々いい加減の若旦那達（若女将も一人）がサッカー何って、ラグビー選手の皆さんに申し訳ない。

その後はまたもう一つな菅平の文化:バーベキューを楽しませて頂きました。2019年に世界選手の皆様も体験して頂きたいよね。

With its incredible selection of sports fields (108 rugby fields!) and high-altitude training grounds, Sugadaira is known as Japan's rugby mecca. Teams from Japan's top schools come here to train in the summer. Japan has been selected to host the 2019 Rugby World Cup, due in no small part to Sugadaira, I'm sure.

Recently the Nagano Prefecture Junior Ryokan Association held a mini-soccer tournament in Sugadaira. We got to play on one of those top-grade sports fields. Compared to the real athletes that usually compete here, no doubt we looked like bumbling idiots. But with that awesome field and the Sugadaira's stunning mountains as our backdrop, I can definitely understand the area's popularity with sports teams.

After the soccer games, we gathered for another Sugadaira specialty -- a barbecue. I hope the international athletes that gather here in 2019 will get to experience this side of Sugadaira, too.

And on the 15th for the Opening Event, Nagano's wine maker darling, Toyoo Tamamura-san will give a talk about the prefecture's wines. In conjunction with the lecture, a wine tasting bar-hopping "Wine Trail in Nagano" will take place.

長野県旅館青年部の今年度の「ユニーク長野」企画で長野らしい体験を世界に発信する。その一つの体験：山菜狩り。

野沢温泉観光協会で山菜狩りツアーを提供しています。先日は私が参加してみました。ガイドの河野さんが親切に山菜狩りのテクニークを教えてくれた。どういう所でどういう山菜が目付けれるか、似ている植物の中でどれを食べられるかどれがお腹の中までかゆくするか、それぞれの山菜の調理仕方など、細かく説明してくれた。

人工的に育った山菜が最近に主流となったが、実際に山に入って、自分の手で自然の山菜を採って見たら、どれだけ貴重な物か分かります。

山菜の世界は奥深い。山菜の種類や調理（袴剥き、あく抜き等）、ガイドの河野さんのお話しを聞いて、感心しました。

山菜狩りは恐らく日本全国であるだろうけど、信州の雄大の山々は山菜狩りのメッカです。こういう長野らしい体験を「ユニーク長野」企画で全世界お伝えしたい。

The Nagano Junior Ryokan Association's big project that I am working on is "Unique Nagano". We are hoping to share Nagano's many unique activities and experiences to the world. One example that I recently took part in: Sansai gathering.

The Nozawa Onsen Tourism Association offers guided sansai gathering tours. Literally 'mountain vegetables', "sansai" are edible plants that grow wild in the mountains. Traditionally, they are considered a spring delicacy. Lately, though, cultivated sansai that are available year-round are flooding the market. They can't beat the raw, wild bitter taste of real sansai picked in the wilderness.

Our guide on my recent trip to participate in the tour was Kawano-san, one of the employees of the tourism association. He graciously taught us the techniques to find sansai as well as how to tell the difference between edible plants and ones that would turn your insides tickly. Kawano-san also explained how each different type of sansai is prepared for cooking as well as common culinary uses.

The more we learned about sansai, the more we realized how vast the sansai world is: the breadth of variety, how some have to be blanched or soaked in wood ash to remove the bitterness, the delictable ways they can be cooked, and so on.

Sansai gathering takes place throughout Japan, but Nagano with its majestic mountains and deep affinity with sansai cuisine is like a mecca for sansai. Through the Unique Nagano project, we hope to make experiencing sansai gathering available to the world!

善光寺の周辺の空き家の再生活動NPOとＮＰＯ法人こども忍者スクールながの忍法武術会のコラボで、門前忍者道場ができました。先日は寄ってみましたので、宮下忍者がこの新しい道場を案内してくれました。忍者道場だからその案内は壁や床の穴を通したり、2階の屋上から飛び降りたり、手裏剣針投げとか、普段は出来ない体験たっぷり。今度は親子で遊びたいというか修行したい！

An NPO trying to find uses for empty houses and buildings around Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City hooked up with another NPO teaching ninjutsu to kids. The result is the Monzen Ninja Dojo.

Officially open for business, the other day Miyashita-ninja gave me a tour of the dojo. The tour included crawling through holes in the walls and floor, jumping off the 2nd floor roof, and throwing shuriken darts -- not your typical everyday experiences!
I am looking forward to taking our kids there for some father-son bonding through ninja training!

今年はまた北信州のスタンプラリーが行われています。
「千曲川旅情…欲張り温泉巡り
いい湯だなスタンプラリー」

2013年4月27日～11月30日で、
中野市、飯山市、山ノ内町、野沢温泉村、栄村、木島平村の２市１町３村で、全部で１４か所の立ち寄り湯が参加しています。
その内の６つに入れば名前入りタオルなどのプレゼントをもらえる。

2013年の参加日帰り湯はなかなか良い所がそろわれました。私が行った事があるのは

＊トマトの国　2011年3月12日の地震でやられて復活したお湯
＊馬曲温泉　永遠（？）まで見える野天風呂

あとの11か所は行った事がない。このスタンプラリーの気掛けで温泉巡りしたいと思います♪

Northern Nagano's Day-Use Onsen Stamp Rally is back for 2013.

The rally takes place from 27-April through 30-November, 2013. A total of 14 day-use onsens in 6 towns and cities in northern Nagano are participating. Take a bath and collect stamps in 6 locations and you can receive a monogrammed towel or other prizes.
