信州の冬がとにかく寒いです。暖まりたい時に温泉はもちろんありますが、もう一つな場所もある：杏の里アグリパークのトロピカルフルーツガーデン。亀清旅館から来るまで20分。
Winter in Nagano is a very cold affair. Where do we go to warm up? To an onsen of course. But there is another place, too: The Tropical Fruits Garden. It's a short 20-minute drive from Kamesei Ryokan

この間、私達のシアトルからのベストフレンドが来ましたのでせっかく長野に来てくれたからそばに連れて行きました。信州では、どこの蕎麦屋が美味しいかって話したら必ずけんかになります。皆がそれぞれの篤い意見があるから。ですから、私がその店の雰囲気でいつも決めています。戸倉上山田温泉なら、地元の自然の為に活躍している「はたや」さん。
Our best friends from Seattle came to visit, so we took them to eat a local specialty: soba buckwheat noodles. When in Nagano, it's best to avoid talking about which soba restaurant is the best -- such conversations always end in arguments as everyone has such strong opinions on the matter. I choose restaurants by the feel of the place. So for here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, it's "Hataya".

家族でＮＨＫの大河ドラマ、風林火山、を見ていました。終わったら、うちの子供たちが｢勘助のお墓を見たい｣と言い出して、早速連れて行きました。亀清から車で30分ぐらいです。風林火山のファン、皆様どうぞ！
This year, national broadcaster NHK's year-long historical drama has been Fuurinkazan, about the famous samurai battles at Kawanakajima. Our kids watched the show and wanted to see the grave of one of the famious samurais, Kansuke Yamamoto. So I took them there today. It's only about 30 minutes by car from our inn.

焼鳥屋。食べる為だけじゃな。地元の人達と楽しい会話の為にも。戸倉上山田温泉の「ゆみ」と言う焼き鳥屋さんでカウンターの向こう側の方が芸子さんの世界を卒業したYumiさんです。卒業したかもしれないけど、会話のエンタテインメントとしてはやはりプロ。我が宿に泊まる外国からのお客さんをよく連れてきます。１人は６時半に行ったのに、１０時半になっても帰ってこない。大丈夫かどうかチェックしに行ったら、彼がカウンターに座って、ビールの空グラス５本ぐらいがあって、周りのお客さん達とに盛り上がっていました。さっすがYumiさん！
Yakitori restaurants (grilled chicken on skewers) are abundant throughout Japan. They are a great way to meet the locals. The one closest to Kamesei is Yumi's, run by an ex-geisha. Yumi-san is a master at entertaining conversations. I often take guests from overseas there for dinner, dropping them off and depositing them into the skillful hands of Yumi-san. One Brit I dropped off at 6:30pm hadn't come back yet as of 10:30, so I went over to check on him. There he was, at the counter, with about 5 empty beer glasses in front of him and shit-eating grin on his face, embroiled in lively conversation with Yumi-san and the other guests. That's Yumi's for you!

今日は仲良しの集まりで、上田市の真田地区でピックニック。近所のパン屋さんの美味しい作品と、食べれる花、山の綺麗な空気と…世界のあちらこちらからのいい友達：オーストリア、米国東海岸、米国西海岸、そして皆の奥さんたちとちびっ子たち。

Picnic with friends in Sanada (Ueda City). Fantastic bread from the neighborhood bakery, interesting edible flowers, crisp clean air in the rustic countryside, and great friends -- Austrian, US East Coast, US West Coast, and our various spouses and little ones.

千曲市の森に有名な古墳があるけど、隣の長野市に大室というところで又違う形な古墳があります。実は何百個があるようです。今日、私が始めて見ました。今度、ハイキングしてゆっくり見たいと思った。
Here in our town we have a famous ancient burial tomb in Mori. But in next-door Nagano City, there are the Omuro Ancient Tombs, a series of several hundred small tombs. Today was my first time to see them -- I want to come back and hike the area to see more!

戸倉駅の上に天狗公園があります。そこでこのでかい天狗があります。町が作った時に、日本一を目指したようですが、出来上がって、図ってみたら。。。日本二でした。
On the way to taking the Tanigawa party to Togura Station, we stopped at Tengu Park behind the station to see the view.

2週間ぶりに黒姫高原に行ってきました。前回は家族連れのコスモス園、今日は商工会関係の講演。前回は曇り、今日はさすがに秋の空で眺めがうんと綺麗でした。黒姫と妙高がどれだけでかいか。。。我々人間がどれだけ小さいか。又長野の大自然が好きになった。
The Nagano Chamber of Commerce held a seminar today at the Kurohime Highlands Dowakan (Fairy Tale Hall). The Autumn sky was a clear blue, highlighting Kurohime and Myoukou's stunning beauty. Once again I was reminded of how beautiful Nagano is.
