Here in Nagano, it gets so cold in the winter that you don't want to go out. So what do Nagano-ites do for fun in the winter? Well, here's Tyler's Top 10 Things to Do in Nagano in the Winter:

1. Ski
Embrace the cold, and get out and enjoy Nagano's spectacular nature. One of the best ways to do that is to go skiing in the mountains. With so many world class, Olympic level ski resorts in the prefecture, it would be a shame not to take advantage and hit the slopes. Of all the ski areas in Nagano, I personally like Shiga Kogen to the east of Nagano City, for its remote mountainous beauty. I took our sons there after New Years. We skied around for half a day, and barely scratched the surface of what Shiga has to offer.

２．Snowshoeing
If you prefer to enjoy the snowy scenery at a slower pace than skiing, then snowshoeing is the way to go. You can go cross country skiing or snowshoeing at various places throughout Nagano, but I personally suggest Togakushi. Mirror Pond, the Forest Reserve, and the mystical path to the Inner Shrine, Okusha, which is lined by massive cedar trees. The rich hues of the cedar bark contrasts so beautifully with the snow.

３．Ice Skating
For people who want to do some winter sports activities but the weather isn't cooperating or it's too much trouble to go to the mountains, how about ice skating? During New Years, our family went skating at M-Wave in Nagano City. It was a lot of fun, and they even had skates to fit me -- 30cm!

４．Onsen
If Nagano's cold winter is getting to you, how about going for a soak in an onsen hot spring mineral bath? Nagano is blessed with scores of onsens throughout the prefecture. Many have outdoor baths that let you enjoy views of the mountains as you soak in the onsen. Norikura's milky white onsen, Azumaya Kogen Hotel near Mount Asama, and Maguse Onsen who's outdoor bath features views of the northern Alps are just a few. Last month, our family went to the Takayama Onsen area and enjoyed the views from one of the baths at Shichimi Onsen.

5. Snow Monkeys
"Walk a half an hour through the snow to some some monkey soaking in an onsen?" Well, it wouldn't be a snow monkey if there weren't any snow! This is the best time of the year to see the monkeys of Jigokudani Wild Monkey Park in their natural environment, escaping the snow and cold by bathing in the onsen. And I promise: the blissful look of the monkeys' faces as they soak in the onsen will be worth the trip.

6. Strawberry Picking
I know what you're thinking -- "Strawberry picking in the winter? Isn't that done in July out at a strawberry field?" Well, here in Japan, the berries are grown in greenhouses, making winter prime picking time. It's also a way we Nagano-ites escape the cold, by going inside a heated greenhouse. And you get to eat yummy berries to boot! Note: Strawberry picking in Japan involves paying to enter the greenhouse, where they give you a bowl of sweet condensed milk for berry dipping, and you get to pick and eat to your heart's (and tummy's) content. 7. Art & History Museums
Winter also presents an opportunity to visit those museums you had always wanted to check out. You get to tweak your artistic and/or historical interests, plus its warm inside the museums! Right across the street from Agri-Park (the strawberry place mentioned in #6 above), is the Nagano Prefectural History Museum, as well as the Mori Shogunzuka Keyhole tomb. 8. "Taiken" Experiences
As in #7 above, if you want to get in from the cold and do some cultural-related activity, winter is a great time to do so. Here in Nagano, there's everything from soba noodle making to ninja lessons. Two "experiences" that I suggest are traditional silk weaving for adults (Koiwai Tsumugi in Ueda) and prehistoric Jomon era craft making for kids (Sarashina Ancient Experiences Park in Chikuma City)

9. Hot Pot Cuisine
Hot Pot meals, or "o-nabe" as they are known in Japanese, are popular throughout Asia. But hot pots are a perfect match for Nagano's cold winters, especially if the ingredients include some local favorites, such as deer meat or wild boar meat. 10. Azumino Wasabi Fields
The Daio Wasabi Farm in Azumino is pretty special. Wasabi only grows in the cleanest, clearest water. Azumino has that, in rivers fed by run-off from the Japanese Alps. On top of the pristine water, you have Azumino's quiet, natural setting. Amidst all of this, and with the backdrop of the Alps, you have the wasabi fields laid out in rows with streams running through them. The farm is rewarding to see any time of the year, but in winter, when the leaves are off the trees, the bare branches give an even stronger contrast to the green of the wasabi plants and the steel grey of the riverlets. 上田市の奥の隅に室賀温泉があります。そこの「ささらの湯」の日帰り施設で、室賀の話題の美肌のお湯の体験が出来ます。上山田温泉を含めて、あちらこちらの温泉は「美人の湯」とか言います。しかし、この室賀温泉のお湯で、肌は本当にすべすべになります。不思議ぐらいに肌にいい感じします。
今日は女将社長が留守番してくれて、家族で行ってきました。戸倉上山田から意外に近いです。隣の坂城町から上がって、室賀峠を越えて、降りて、左側に有ります。ささらの湯はお風呂以外、地元で採れた作物のの産物直売所も、手打ちそばのレストラン、地元の作家の作品展示ギャラリーもあります。
しかし、ささらの湯の一番の魅力はやはり、室賀温泉のお湯である。月毎交換になる男女別々の内湯の外は岩か樽の露天風呂。私は亀清旅館の露天風呂を作った時に、その岩風呂を参考にしました。お風呂は１００％かけ流しだそうです。温泉の量はたっぷりあるようで、温泉スタンドもあります。今回にささらの湯に入った時に、一緒に入っていた人は群馬県から来たと仰いました。室賀温泉のお湯はやはり、県外から来る価値がある。「上山田のお湯とどう違うか」と聞かれました。温度は似ていますが、室賀温泉は肌に本当につるつるする。その代わり、上山田の方は硫黄の香りはします。（個人的に、その方が好きです。）
では、戸倉上山田温泉の行きか帰りの途中でもう一つな温泉に立ち寄りたいなら、室賀温泉は良いです！

Hidden away in the back of one of Ueda City's nooks and crannies is Muroga Onsen. Their theme is "Mihada no yu", or "mineral water for beautiful skin". Lots of onsens (including ours, Kamiyamada) advertise the beautifying effects of their mineral waters, but I have to say that Muroga's onsen water does leave your skin feeling slippery smooth.
Our boss offered to watch over Kamesei Ryokan for the afternoon, so our family went for a drive today to Sasara no yu, the daytrip bathing facility at Muroga. We drove over Muroga Pass, saving us the drive around. Sasara no yu, besides the baths, has a farmers market, soba restaurant, and art gallery. So guests can purchase local produce, eat hand-made soba, and enjoy the works of local artists. But the main draw is the mineral water. There are separate baths for men and women with a rock bath outside one, and a wood barrel bath outside the other. (The sides are changed once a month.) The baths are constantly flowing -- no recirculating. Muroga's onsen apparently has a healthy volume of water -- they even have an onsen stand (kind of like a gas stand but you pump onsen water instead of gas).
Today, some of our fellow bathers had come from neighboring Gunma Prefecture. Muroga's mineral water's smooth skin effects are such that it makes it worth it to come from afar. The Gunma guys asked us how Kamiyamada's mineral water differs. Both are clear (uncolored), and the temperatures are pretty much the same, but Muroga's definitely gives your skin a softer, more slippery feel. However, Kamiyamada's has a more prominent sulfur smell making it the more onsen-like in my opinion.
So if you are looking for a different onsen to try on the way to or from Togura Kamiyamada, I suggest checking out Muroga!

Here at Kamesei Ryokan, about 80% of our guests from overseas come to Nagano to see the snow monkeys at Jigokudani. The trains and busses to get there can be a little confusing, so I updated our Snow Monkey Transit Time Schedule for the winter. Our guests can use this to make a pleasant day trip to see the cute monkeys bathing serenely in their onsen.

長野の冬は寒いから何もやる事がないじゃないかと思われます。お部屋に入り込んでテレビの前でボウとする前に、ここでタイラーの「長野の冬のトップ１０」を提供させて頂きます。

１．スキー
信州の冬の寒さを抱いて、大自然に出かけて、スキーしに行く事。長野は世界レベルのスキー場があるから、スキーしに行かない言い訳は聞きません!私は個人的に志賀高原が好き。国立公園の中なので山景色や雪をかぶっている森の景色で、快適な広さで自然の美は感動的。（実は、昨日、息子達を連れて滑ってきました。半日全ても、ほんの一部しか通れなかった。とにかく、志賀高原のスキー場が広い!）
スキーした後のパーティーが好む人に白馬がお勧めで、伝統的な温泉街付きのスキー場が欲しい方に野沢温泉が一番良い。

２．スノーシュー
スキーよりゆっくり信州の冬の自然を楽しみたい場合は、スノーシューがお勧めです。クロスカントリースキーやスノーシューはあちらこちらで出来るけど、個人的に戸隠が好きです。鏡池、植物園、そして特に奥社へ行く杉並び木で戸隠の独特のスピリチュアルな自然を楽しめる。雪景色の杉並び木はまた見事だ!

３．スケート
冬のスポーツしたいけど、外の天気が良くない、又は山まで行くのは大変な場合、スケートは如何でしょうか?先日はＭ－Ｗａｖｅで家族でスケートして来ました。子供も親も楽しめた。（親が子供と競争で負けちゃったのは吃驚!）

４．温泉
信州の冬の寒さに負けそうな時、体を温泉で温めてください。特に、長野の人気「野天風呂」なら、信州の冬景色を楽しみながら、信州の温泉のお湯も楽しめる。最高のコンビネーション！白骨温泉、あずまや高原（浅間山の近く）、馬曲温泉、色々行ってみましたが、最近にはまっているのは高山村温泉郷。先月に七味温泉に行って、景色もお湯も最高の野天風呂でした。

５．
スノーモンキー話題になっている温泉に入るお猿さん：地国谷野猿公園。雪がある時に行くのにちょっと大変だけど、雪があるからこそ、スノーモンキー!尚且つ、行く途中、杉の森の中を通るので木の皮が絵になります。でも、それより、温泉に入っているお猿の顔の表情が可愛い!

６．イチゴ狩り
夏で狩る畑で育ったイチは冬のハウスのイチゴよりおいしいのは美味しいですが、子供が楽しめるし、ハウスの中が暖かいです。（これは、寒い信州にポイントが高い!）色んなおところで出来るけど、とりあえず地元のアグリパークを紹介します。ＨＰはここ。

７．美術館・歴史観巡り
この冬は普段に行かれないミュージアムに行ってみましょう。館内はきっと暖かいし、勉強になります。上記６．に紹介したアグリパークのすぐそばに長野県立歴史館と森将軍塚古墳があります。

８．体験
上記７。のミュージアム巡りに関連しますが、外から入って、中で楽しい体験してみたらどうですか?長野なら、味噌作りやそば打ちなど色々なユニークな体験がある。ここで紹介したいのは大人用：上田紬の機織体験＠小岩井紬工房；子供用：縄文時代のクラフト作り＠さらしなの里 歴史資料館。

９．お鍋料理
お鍋は長野じゃなくても食べれるけど、鍋料理は信州の冬の寒さにちょうど合う。尚且つ、長野なりの鍋もあるのです。先日は「ごとく帝」長野駅前店に行って、猪と鹿肉のお鍋を食べました。長野の冬はこれだ!

去年の冬に行ってみましたので冬の葉っぱのない時期の安曇野わさび農園の雰囲気がまた特別です。単純な綺麗な水が必要なわさび育つ農園は冬にさらに「純」に感じます。

トリックアートの美術館は那須高原など、あちらこちらにあります。その中で我が家族の一番気に入りのは軽井沢の。今日は家族のクリスマス・ホリディーで軽井沢へ買い物とイルミネーション散策で行って来ました。旧軽銀座の入り口にトリックアートの世界・旧軽井沢森ノ美術館があります。子供達は｢入りたい｣と騒いでいた。｢またかヤ？｣と思いましたが、若女将は一人で銀ぶらしたそうだったので、自分が子供三人を連れて、美術館に入りました。そして、そのアートと触れ合って、創造を使って楽しい写真撮りで盛り上がりました。ここでその一部を載せますので、どうぞ、楽しんでみてください。
Trick Art Museums seem to pop up wherever you go in Japan; places like Nasu Kogen and everywhere. Our family's favorite is the one in Karuizawa. At the entrance to the Kyu-Karu Ginza shopping street is the "World of Trick Art Kyu-Karuizawa Mori-no-Bijutsukan (Museum)". We went to Karuizawa today for our family's Christmas Holiday, for shopping and to see the lights. But our kids really wanted to go to the Trick Art Museum again. Mari wanted to go window shopping anyways, so I took the three kids and went into the museum. We ended up having a ball interacting with the trick art and taking funky pictures. It was great to see the kids using their imagination for their poses. Here are a few of our pictures for your enjoyment.

寒い１２月の週末の日で雪が道に残っていて、でも子供達は休みだし、家族で何かしようか?　思い切って、信州高山温泉郷へドライブし、七味温泉に入って来ました。我々は毎日、上山田温泉に入っていますけど、偶に違う温泉に入るのもいいですね。七味温泉は上山田より硫黄が強くて、温度も１，２度高かった（４３℃ぐらいでした）。結構刺激的でした。色はその日によって違うらしい。私達が行った日に色が緑でした。そして、一番良かったのは雪景色となっていた松川渓谷を眺める大能野天風呂！信州の大自然＋温泉・・・ええ所やナ!

What's a family to do on a cold, snowy December Sunday? Why, go for a winter drive up to the mountains of course! The kids were off from school, and our inn was quiet, so we piled into the car and drove up to Takayama Village, about an hour east of Nagano City. There we went to Shichi-Mi Onsen for a soak in their bath. Of course, we take a bath in Kamiyamada's Onsen waters everyday, but it's fun to try other onsens every once in a while. Shichi-Mi's has a lot stronger sulfer content, and is a couple degrees hotter than hours (approx. 43 deg F). The color apparently varies day to day -- the day we went it was green. The best part was the outdoor bath with a spectacular view of the Matsukawa Valley covered in snow. Nagano's beautiful nature and wonderful onsens -- I knew there was a reason I moved here!

千曲市は沢山の版画家で本当に恵まれています。全国や海外にも活動なされている方もいらっしゃる。その中で、地元の景色や伝説、子供の歌などをテーマにして、地元でよく展示して、地元の民家を買ってギャラリーを開いた森貘朗さんが｢地元の版画家｣と呼ばれています。先日は森さんの｢杏の里板画館」に行ってみました。森さんが隣の工房でちょうどいはったので本来ならば冬の間で休館の所、特別に開けてくれました。私は森さんの版画に憧れていますので展示してある作品を楽しみにしていました。しかし、森さんの版画より、本人が憧れている地元の先生達(＝マスター）のが多かったです。それぞれの版画は歴史、ストリーがあって、感動しました。館内でお洒落で展示してあって、格好良かった。ギャラリー実態は渋い雰囲気で、更に感動しました。案内のパンフによると、
｢皆でつくった板画館
杏の里板画館は、板画と民芸の小さな美術館です。失われようとしていた古い民家を残そうと、八百名余の人々が力を出し合って、再生工事をおこない、杏の里番画館としてよみがえらせることが出来ました。」
クラシックな民家を大事にして、中にクラシックな板画を展示して、私は森さんにますます憧れました。

森さんの作品を見たいなら、12月19日までにアートサロン千曲(千曲市屋代駅前通り、Tel 217-1155)に木喰萬板仏展が行われています。
それ以外、千曲市の姨捨駅にも森さんの作品があります。姨捨山の伝説・松尾芭蕉の詩の絵です。私がお客さんと姨捨夜景・伝説ツアーに行く度に見ています。

Chikuma City is fortunate to have so many wood block print artists living here. Several actively show their work at galleries across the country as well as internationally. One artist, though, focuses on local shows. His works often feature local themes, such as area scenery, legends, childrens songs, etc. He even bought a local old farmhouse and remodelled it into an art gallery. The man is Mori Bakuro, otherwise known as our local wood block print artist.
The other day, I went to Mori-san's gallery, the Anzu-no-Sato (Apricot Village) Bangakan. I happened to catch him at his workshop adjacent to the gallery. Even though the gallery is technically closed during the winter (too much natural air conditioning...), he opened it up to give me a look. I really like Bakuro-san's art, and was looking forward to seeing lots of examples of it in the gallery. So I was surprised to find out that most of the artwork there was by other artists, in particular Mori-san's predecessors, local masters that have passed on. The lighting and the feel of the displays is really stylish, or "shibui" as they say in Japanese. I just call it "cool"!
The building housing the gallery is also really "cool"! It is an old farmhouse and features beautiful woodwork and massive beams. Mori-san led an effort of 800 people's cooperation to preserve the house. And now this classic house serves to preserve classic wood block prints, too.

先日はＴＶで国の税金無駄扱いの番組があった：馬は１頭も無い牧場、何も無い所で立派な資料館など。その資料館に空から見たでかい写真が床になっていた；素晴らしいけど来館人数が少なくて見る人がいない。
長野県の国営アルプスあずみの公園は７月に大町・松川地区がオープンしました。｢空中回廊」で森の上が見えるとか、変わった乗り物とかで話題になっています。この勤労感謝の日に家族を連れて、行って見ました。ＴＶ番組の様な税金無駄扱いか、人が集まる国の宝物のどちらでしょうか？結論は：

難しい。

ある建物（堀金・穂高地区の受付所）の床は空から撮った写真だった。「あっ、ＴＶと一緒！」と思った。
そして、話題の、期待していた空中回廊は森の木の葉っぱが既に落ちていたせいか、あまり感動的じゃなかった。
例の乗り物は確かに、子供達も子供のお父ちゃん(＝私）も楽しめた。ミニスクーターやでかいドーナツ風船を乗って、芝生の坂を下りて、楽しめました。しかし、その横の普通なプレーグラウンドの普通な滑り台も楽しめた。
木の皮を使ったクラフト作り体験とかもあったけど、東京でも出来そうな体験だった。「アルプス」の公園だから、アルプスでしか出来ない体験の方が良い様な気がする。例えば、自分で森で拾った皮を使って作るとか。木のないコンクリートだらけの東京じゃ出来ない。
それもポイントだと思った：｢アルプス｣と言いながら、公園はアルプスのふもとにあったせいで山が見えない。残念でした。山が見える展望台は作れるでしょうか？つまり、ただの子供の滑り台でも、上高地の様な大自然な背景があれば｢国営公園｣らしさが出るのではないかと思いました。
沢山のお客さんが致し、沢山の笑顔もあったから税金の無駄扱いではないと思いました。しかし、国レベルより、県又は町で作ってもおかしくない(もしくは作るべきな)公園だと私が思いました。
注：夜は堀金・穂高地区の方に移って、イルミネーションを楽しんできました。

There was a show on TV recently about wasteful government spending: a horse ranch with no horses, a spectacular museum in the middle of nowhere with no visitors, etc. The museum had an aerial view picture blown up and displayed on the floor -- beautiful except no one ever comes to see it.

Here in Nagano Prefecture, the Omachi section of the Alps Azumino Government National Park opened in July. It features a special bridge allowing visitors to see the forest canopy, as well as fanciful toys people can ride in the park. Was this another example of a waste of tax dollars? The family and I went to check it out on this Labor Day Holiday. And the verdict is:

Mixed.

First of all, one of the buildings (the entrance hall of the Hotaka area) had an aerial photo as its floor -- not a good omen. The forest canopy path was a disappointment -- maybe it would've been more enjoyable before all the leaves had fallen. The funky toys were fun to ride down the grassy slopes -- mini scooters and huge doughnut balloons. However, the kids enjoyed the slide in the kiddy playground just as much. There was a crafts-making place where you could make trinkets out of tree bark and stuff. But you could do that just as well in Tokyo. This is the "Alps" park, so why not offer things you can only do in the Alps. For example, have the kids go into the forest and pick up bark to make their own creation. You can't do that in the concrete jungle of Tokyo. That's what was missing at this Alps park -- the Alps! Since the park was too close to the mountains, you couldn't see the peaks. Even a kiddy slide would be fantastic if it had the Alps as a backdrop. So how about an Alps viewing platform?

There were a lot of visitors, and a lot of smiling faces, so I'd say the park isn't a waste of tax dollars. And we enjoyed the drive over to the Hotaka side and its illumination show at night. But the whole park felt like a regular regional one, not a spectacular national one, in my humble opinion.

若女将と結婚記念日で那須に泊まりに行って来た。シアトルで住んでいたころは二人で、毎年にＢ＆Ｂに泊まった。日本に引越しして４年がたちましたので始めて、息子達なしでのお出かけ。（２歳の美咲ちゃんが邪魔しましたけど・・・）

那須は初めてだった。最初の日は雨ばかりだった。そして、泊まりは「那須塩原市」と言いながら、那須高原から４５分ぐらい離れていると分かった塩原温泉に泊まった。結局、那須はあまり見えなくて。。。

「那須」って、知名度が高くて、魅力の沢山ある観光地と言うイメージでした。塩原温泉は逆にそこの宿の方によると終わりかけているそうです。しかし、那須を短い間に見た限りで、そして塩原に泊まってみたら、逆な印象を受けました。

那須は確かに見所が沢山揃っていた：美術館（石、ガラス、テディーベアなどなどなど）や、３Ｄやトリックアート（３Ｄメルヘン水族館、３Ｄ宇宙、３Ｄ恐竜等など等など）、昆虫ワールド、サファリパーク、アウトレットモール、オルゴール館も。信州の軽井沢の様な雰囲気だと思った。軽井沢の周辺にも似ている様な見所は沢山あります。那須と違って、多少に離れている場合もある（オルゴール館は諏訪、サファリパークは群馬に、テディーベア館は白樺湖に）。でも、どっちがどっちを真似しているのかなと思いました。尚且つ、
１つな例を言わせて頂けたら、諏訪のオルゴール館はセイコ・エプソンのルーツの関係があった上である訳です。那須のオルゴール館は訳が分からない。ただ揃っているだけって感じ。（この戸倉上山田温泉でも、貯金箱館と大衆演劇と言う見所がある；それは西沢さんと言う人が個人で貯金箱を集めて、日本２のコレクションになって、自分で記念館を作った；この温泉は芸者の歴史があるからこそ大衆演劇がある・・・と言うストーリーがちゃんとある訳です。）

軽井沢のそれぞれの見所は那須ほど揃っていないかもしれないけど、町は個人まりで自転車で気持ちよく回れる。木が沢山ある小道や、ロマンチックな教会、歴史的なホテル、色々な良い所を回れる。軽井沢彫りの伝統文化もある。足をちょっと伸ばせば、白糸滝や浅間山・鬼押し出しと言う大自然もある。私に言わせたら、那須に勝ちます。

ほんで、塩原温泉。最初の印象は「普通」。お宿、お料理、お湯、全部は「普通」に感じました。そして、宿の方々と話したら、「日光の近くの温泉地に鬼怒川温泉がある様に、那須の近くの温泉街は塩原だ」と言われた。そして、鬼怒川温泉が厳しくなったと同じく、塩原も厳しいと。「高速道路が千円になったから、お客さんが塩原を通り過ぎて、福島に行っちゃう」と。塩原の魅力が終わったの様。泊まった夜は納得した様な感じしました。
しかし、次の朝は温泉街をぶらぶらしました。この戸倉上山田で立ち上げようとしている馬車ツアーは塩原のシンボルになっているぐらいに既にやっている。戸倉上山田は去年の１０月に足湯がやっとできました。塩原はただの足湯じゃなくて、足湯を散歩しながらつぼの効果が出るような、尚且つ有料な立派な施設でした。頑張っているな!うらやましいな!そして、川に吊橋は何箇所にあった。これは川とのふりあいがたっぷり!うちの温泉と千曲川は残念ながら、コンクリートが多すぎて、原風景が０．その面では、塩原はライバルの鬼怒川より川とのふりあいがあった様に思いました。
そして、最後はちょっとしたドライブとウォークで電化滝を見た。その自然で感動しました。それと比べたら、戸倉上山田温泉の上の荒砥城までのドライブとウォークはどうかな?

結論から言えば、塩原温泉はいい刺激になりました。応援したくなりました!
