せっかくの休みの日で家族で出かけようとしたら…雨！
まあ、雨に負けないで、今日は浅間火山博物館に行きました。外が雨でも、博物館の中で火山の色々と見れます。数年前に一度行きました。その時に、博物館の入口の火山の中に入っていくような雰囲気で、息子たちが怖くて怖くて。今回は興味津々でスムーズに入りました。成長したな！今度は美咲ちゃんが「抱っこ！」と言い出した。やはり、まだ三歳だから怖がっていた。
浅間火山博物館は不思議な存在です。火山についての展示はそれなり面白いし、鬼押し出しとかに行けば、火山の事は詳しく知りたくなるので、この博物館に来れば色々説明してくれる。それは良いのですが、不思議なのは、博物館の施設です。まず、本館の上隣に展望台付きの面白そうな、幽霊が出てきそうな、映画に出てきそうな不気味な建物があります。聞いたら、元の博物館だったと；この新しい博物館ができたら、古いのはクローズになっちゃったそうです。そして、現在の本館に入れば、広～い食堂があって、そして広～いお土産売店があって、奥の方に博物館の入口がありました。博物館実態は本館の半分以下です。目的はなんだろうかと思っちゃう。駐車場を見れば、分かる：入口の近くは大型バス専用。時代が変わって団体客より個人客、我々みたいな子供連れの家族とかが増えています。その中でこういう博物館も個人客の感動作りはもうちょっと頑張ってもらいたいな…

It was our family's day off to go for a drive somewhere. Except, nobody told the weatherman. Hmm, what to do on a rainy day with the kids? We decided to still go for a drive, and checked out the Asama Volcano Museum. When we went a few years ago, the boys were so scared by the museum's lava tunnel-like entrance, that they were shaking. This time around, they really got into the special effects. It was their little sister Misaki's turn to ask to be held -- at least she was scared.
The Asama Volcano Museum is an interesting place. The museum itself does a good job of showing the inner workings of volcanoes. So if you go to the nearby Onioshidashi lava fields and your interest in volcanoes is piqued, the museum's explanation is pretty valuable. But the museum's facilities themselves are, well, weird. Above the main building is an old, dilapidated, ghost-like building with a bizarre viewing room on top. It looks like something out of a horror movie. When we asked about it, we were told it's the original museum building, and when the present one was built, the old one was closed down. So it's left to deteriorate instead of being torn down? Anyways, then there's the present museum building. You go in, and first there's a huge cafeteria, then a huge souvenir shop area, before you finally reach the entrance to the museum itself. It makes you wonder what the real purpose is. Actually, that was already given away by the parking lot. The parking spots nearest the entrance were reserved for tour busses. Ah hah! They're still waiting for the busloads of guests to come. Well, nowadays, it's individual families and couples travelling, not large groups. Museums like this have to evolve with the times!

先日に申し上げましたように、真田名所・旧跡めぐり「真田幸村ショートツアー｣と言うのは最近にできました。今日は特別に誘っていただいて、参加させて頂きました。ガイド・ドライバーの斉藤さんと栗原さんのお陰で、東信の格好いい侍、真田幸村のことを大変いい勉強になりました。案内して頂いたのは下記のようです。

上田駅集合、１０：００出発
北国街道の柳町を通って、上田市の中心から出て真田地区へ登りました。

真田歴史観と御屋敷公園
歴史観で真田三代の百年のスパンを説明してくれました。そこで｢幸村｣って別名だと分かりました。本名が信繁だったそうです。今の芸能人はよく芸名を作るけど、幸村は死後で芸名ができた。格好いい！
御屋敷公園は幸村の生まれた場所だそうです。そのころからの松ノ木は一本がまだある。格好いい！

真田山城　(本城跡）
右は菅平と烏帽子、左は美ヶ原と立科山。攻められたら、ここに戻ってパノラマでどこでも見れるから、最高にいいお城の位置だ。｢足元に注意してください。右は急な坂なので落ちたらお終い。」だから山城はここで作ったのだ。格好いい！

信綱寺　（しんこうじ）
幸村のおじさん、信綱（のぶつな）のお墓。普通なお寺さんだが、善光寺の回向柱に負けないぐらい大きな柱があったり、「黒門」というお城にあってもおかしくないような門も隠れた所にあったり、やはり｢普通｣なお寺じゃないよね。

幸村のお父さんが作って、２回も徳川の大軍から守った。

とにかく、感心しました。長野の侍の歴史はさらに気に入りました。

真田幸村は東信の格好良い侍。亀清のお客さん達にお着きになる時にいつも聞きます：｢どこか寄って来はりましたか｣と。｢真田幸村のファンなので上田城に行ってみました｣と言う様な答えが多いです。（女性のお客様も！何百年たっても格好良い侍は格好良いそうです。）

恥ずかしい事ですが、私にはまだ関心があまりないです。正直って、勉強不足です。風林火山の事は色々と勉強して、関係場所を回って、関係した山城へ登って、地元の関係している地名の伝説を教えてもらって、やっと分かってきました。

しかし、真田三代に関してはまだまだ知りません。

昨日はバスツアー会社「斉藤駕籠屋」の栗原さんが来てくれて、新しく始まった｢真田幸村ショートツアー」を紹介してくれました。毎週土・日に行われているそうで、朝１０時に上田駅に出発して、真田歴史館や真田山城、信綱寺、上田城を寄って、２時半に上田城に戻る。途中で運転士が真田三代の詳しいことを話してくれて、それぞれの現地を案内してくれるそうです。

私にとっては興味深い話なので、早速今週の土曜日、６月５日のツアーに参加します。

"Sanada Yukimura" is eastern Nagano's cool samurai.
I always ask our guests when they arrive here at Kamesei Ryokan if they did any sightseeing along the way. Often times, guests reply they are Sanada Yukimura fans and stopped to see Ueda Castle. (Female guests, too. Apparently once a cool samurai, always a cool samurai.)

To be honest, I still don't have much of an appreciation for the whole Sanada deal. With the Kawanakajima samurai battle story, I took the effort to go see the various sites, climb to the various mountain castles, and ask about the legends behind local place names related to the Takeda Shingen / Uesugi Kenshin legacy, and have come to understand and appreciate the story.

A new tour has recently been established that offers to do the same thing for the Sanada story. Saito Kagoya is offering bus tours every Saturday and Sunday, departing Ueda Station at 10am, stopping at several Sanada-related sites with explanation and on-site guidance by the driver, returning to Ueda Station at 2:30pm.

This Saturday June 5th, I have been invited to attend. So if you are interested in the Sanada history, why don't you come and join this tour with me? The normal driver speaks a bit of English, but for this tour I'll be available for interpretation. We still have rooms available at Kamesei this weekend for anyone who wants to stay the night, and I'd be happy to give guests a lift between Togura Kamiyamada Onsen and Ueda Station. 長男のＡｎｄｙ君の誕生日と言う事で、半日の休みを取れて、子供たちとの友達を連れて、皆で戸隠忍者の里「チビッ子忍者村」へお出かけしました。戸隠高原の新緑のパワーで体を充電して、子供たち（との両親）が思い切って忍者になって、いっぱい遊びました。信州って良いね！

It was our son Andy's birthday, so we took a half a day off, piled the kids and their friends into the car, and went for a drive to Togakushi's Ninja Village. The new spring growth of the trees in the Togakushi highlands felt like a "power spot" and recharged our bodies' batteries. Meanwhile, the kids (and their mom 'n dad) became ninjas and had a blast playing on the athletic structures and exploring the ninja fun house. I am so glad we live in Nagano and can have this fun!

信州と周辺の地域は本当に温泉で恵まれています。先日は志賀高原の帰りでその1つ、群馬県の万座温泉に寄りました。以前は通った事があって、その時に止めなかったけど、車から硫黄の香りが強かったと印象が残っていました。今回は通るだけではなくて、温泉に入るぞ！との計画でした。
万座は標高1800ｍだそうです。高い割りに、地球の中心が近く感じます。なぜなら、温泉の湯気があちらこちらから出ていて、所々は地球の中心から出てきた成分で地面が赤くなっています。火山地と言うか、火星というか、別な正解です。
そして、その硫黄の香り！空気に染められている。私が覚えていた通りでした。思い切り「温泉だ！」って感じ。
いくつかの宿がありますが、万座プリンスホテルの露天風呂からの景色が一番万座らしいとお聞きしましたので、入ってみました。お湯は信州の代表の温泉、白骨の様にミルキーでくもっていて、そして硫黄の香りがすごい事。しかし、白骨温泉が深い谷に隠れて、周りは大自然な森の所で、万座はもっと快適で、雲の上のような雰囲気で火山っぽい風情で、眺めが独特です。
戸倉上山田からの日帰り温泉として、硫黄＋火山の合わせが好む方にお勧めです！

Nagano and the surrounding areas are blessed with an abundance of natural hot spring onsen mineral baths. On the way back from Shiga Kogen Heights the other day, we stopped at one of the more unique ones: Manza Onsen in neighboring Gunma Prefecture.
I had been to Manza once before, but just passing through by car. The main thing I remember about it was being able to smell the sulfur from the car. This time, I was looking forward to actually soaking in a hot spring bath in intriguing Manza Onsen.
Although Manza is 1800 meters above sea level, it feels deceivingly close to the center of the earth. That is because of the geysers of sulfur steam that are erupting all over the place and the reddish tint on the earth in places that is a tell-tale sign of minerals that have come out of the very volcanically active depths.
There are several onsen hotels in Manza. We chose the Manza Prince Hotel because its outdoor baths offer the best view of Manza's volcanic activity. The onsen water reminded me of Shirahone, one of Nagano's signature onsen areas, with its milky quality and strong sulfur smell. However, while Shirahone is hidden in a valley in the Japanese Alps surrounded by a deep forest, Manza is much more open and feels like it is above the clouds, and offers unique volcanic scenery.
For people interested in a day trip from Togura Kamiyamada to check out a strong sulfur onsen with a volcanic setting, I highly suggest Manza Onsen.

万座温泉は戸倉上山田から車で一時間20分です。（須坂経由の県道54号で。）または、軽井沢からプリンスのシャットルバスも出ています。Manza Onsen is located 1 hour 20 minutes by car from Togura Kamiyamada (via Prefectural Route 54 from Suzaka). Or, shuttle busses are provided by Prince Hotels from Karuizawa.

「牛に引かれて善光寺」の大イベントで忙しくて、若女将が特に犠牲になっていました。お互いに「ご苦労！」と言うことで、美咲ちゃんを連れて、ドライブでお出かけしました。軽井沢から志賀高原までの浅間―白根火山ルートを通りました。この６０ｋｍのルートは上信越高原国立公園を通って、途中の鬼押し出しや万座が見事の火山景色です。夏のような青い空の下で、気持ち良いドライブが出来ました。信州の周辺の自然はやはり、感動的ですね。

仕事も大事ですが、こういう火山を巡るドライブは偶に必要です。そして、火山もパワースポットですが、最後はやはり温泉と言うパワースポットに入らなきゃ。浅間―白根火山ルートを通って、戸倉上山田に泊まるのはちょうど良いコースではないかと思いますが、いかがでしょうか？

I have been so busy with the Zenkoji Walk event preparations, that I had been neglecting my wife, Mari. So the two of took Misaki and went for a drive yesterday. We took the Asama-Shirane Volcano Route between Karuizawa and Shiga Kogen Heights. The Route is a 60km drive through the Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park It features several dynamic volcanic scenery such as the Oni Oshi Dashi rock field at Mt. Asama, the steaming sulfer pits at Manza Hot Springs, and the caldera filled with turquoise blue water at Mt. Shirane. The pleasant, summer-like weather made for an enjoyable drive.

If you find yourself working too hard, take time out for a drive like this Volcano Route After taking in the volcano-related power spots, I suggest staying at an onsen and soaking in another power spot -- the hot spring mineral waters of an onsen ryokan, like here at Togura Kamiyamada Onsen.

昨日は時間が少し取れましたので、良いお天気を生かして、家族でドライブしてきました。最近は「一本桜」にはまっているので、今回は北信の高山村へお出かけしました。以前にお客さんに紹介してくれた「水中のしだれ桜」を探したら、場所はマイカー規制となっていて途中の学校で車を止めて、シャットルバスで行くようになっていました。

一本の木の為に態々シャットルバス？思ったより、こういう「一本桜」は人気あるんだと始めて分かりました。

水中のしだれ桜は250年前に、お城の入り口に植えたようです。お城がなくなったけど、桜の木が残っていて、でかくて立派な木です。私達が行った日はまだ2,3部しか咲いていなかった。今年はゴールデンウィークでちょうど満開になりそうです。花があまり咲いていなくても、青空に遠く見えた妙高や黒姫の山と言うドラマチックな場面で、感動しました。

今日の信濃毎日新聞にも高山村の一本桜が載っています。機会があれば、是非行ってみて下さい。

高山村は亀清旅館・戸倉上山田温泉から高速で約40分。又は長野駅経由で長野電鉄須坂駅からバス（山田温泉行）で30分。詳しくは村のＨＰへ。

日曜日は長野マラソンが長野市のオリンピック施設を回りながら行われました。その関係で何人かの選手が亀清に泊まってくれた。シンガポール、米国、フランス、イギリスなど、様々な国から走りに来ました。
そして、日本人のカップルさんも日曜日にお着きになって、偉い運動してきたように見えた。聞いたら、山梨県の清里の辺から、佐久の方まで、８０ｋｍ歩いたそうだ。午後9時出発で夜を通じて歩いたって。すごい！
来月はこの戸倉上山田温泉から善光寺までの「牛に引かれて善光寺」のウォーキングイベントが行う。その３０ｋｍが長いように感じたけど、佐久までのイベントの距離の半分以下だし、尚且つ夜じゃなくて朝からお昼まで。

Last Sunday, the Nagano Marathon was held in Nagano City, with a course that snakes around the various Olympic venues. We had several guests stay at Kamesei that competed in the event. They were quite an international bunch: from Singapore, France, the States, and the UK.
Then a Japanese couple arrived in the evening. They looked like they had ran a marathon, too. But they said it had been a walk -- an 80+ km walk from near Kiyosato in neighboring Yamanashi Prefecture to Saku City. And they walked it during the night! Wow!
Next month, on May 5th, our town will hold its annual 30km walk from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen to Zenkoji temple in honor of the "Pulled by an ox to Zenkoji" legend. It had always felt like a long walk, but it's only 30km, and is held during the daytime.

昨日は会議で松本に行きまして、お昼はお城に近い豚カツ屋さん。お店の玄関に入って、「あっ、いい雰囲気やな」と思いました。木造の建物で濃い色の木の扱いは昔からの味が出て、「格好いい！」って感じでした。そして、テーブルに座って椅子を動かしてみると、

椅子が重い事！

噂の松本民芸家具だ！雑誌とかでよく見ましたが、自分の目で見て、自分の手で触るのは始めてでした。無空のしっかりした造りが特徴です。長野県の中で有名です。

東信では軽井沢彫りというもう1つな民芸家具もあります。桜などの可愛い手彫りのデザインと、簡単に分解が出来るのは特徴です。昔は宣教師が軽井沢に多かったので、皆が国に帰る時に持って帰れるように、分解が出来るようになっているわけ。

松本家具と軽井沢彫り、両方は匠の腕の上手さが感じて、味のある家具。松本家具はがっちり感があって、どちらかというと男らしい。軽井沢彫りは可愛い桜の手彫りがあって、女性らしい。自分は両方が大好き！

I had to go to Matsumoto yesterday for a meeting and ended up going to a tonkatsu restaurant near the castle for lunch. As soon as I walked in the door, I knew this restaurant was special. The dark wood construction and exquisite woodwork showed some magnificent craftsmanship. Then I went to sit at a table and scoot the chair over.

What a heavy chair!

Ah! This must be the famous "Matsumoto Kagu" furniture. I had read about it in magazines. The solid wood construction makes for hefty pieces of furniture. Then I realized that all of the tables and chairs in the shop were this Matsumoto furniture. How cool!

Nagano has another furniture tradition, "Karuizawa Bori". "Bori" means carved, and refers to the delicate cherry blossoms and other designs hand carved into the furniture. Karuizawa-bori has another unique characteristic. It is made to come apart easily. Originally, Karuizawa was a popular summer resort for the missionaries in Tokyo. They needed furniture that could be easily dismantled for transporting back to their home countries when their missions were up.

Matsumoto Kagu, with its solid wood construction, has a more masculine feel. Karuizawa Bori with its fine detailed carving is more feminine. I absolutely adore both!

私は日本の古い町並みが好きです。妻籠宿や上田市の柳町とか、一昔の日本の街の雰囲気、その木造建物の木のぬくもりや、瓦の屋根、細かい作り、とにかく、格好良いです。
この千曲市の中で、稲荷山と言う土壁の蔵がまだ沢山残っている町があります。悲しいのは、その昔の建物はちょっとず津、消えています。どんどん壊せれている。写真の建物は売り出されているので、買う方がいなかったら、この１２０年前に作られていた家も、危ないです。誰か、買う人がいませんか？問合せは私へどうぞ。オーナーを紹介しますので。

I love Japan's old, historic street scenes. There's something about the earthen walls, clay roof tiles, hefty wooden beams, detailed construction and so on that is so cool. Places like Tsumago-juku post town in southern Nagano, and Ueda City's Yanagi-machi.
Here in Chikuma City, we have a district with lots of earthen walled storehouses, Inariyama. One by one, though, the old buildings are being torn down. This one in the picture has been put up for sale, and if no one comes forward to buy it, it is in danger of being torn down, too. How about?
