98年の冬オリンピックのおかげで、長野市にいくつかの施設が残されました。その一つはホワイトリングです。五輪の時はフィギゥアスケートやショートトラックスピードスケートが開催されました。　今はコンサートやスポーツ大会で利用されています。

先日は我が息子のフットサルの大会がホワイトリングで行われました。せっかくだったから中に入ってみて、写真を撮ってみました。

長野五輪のお蔭で、海外で知名度が高いです。今はNInJAプロジェクトの仲間たちと外国人観光客の聞き取り調査はしています。大半はオリンピックの気掛けで長野を初めて知ったのですが、オリンピック施設は決してみたいと思わないそうです。山とか文化、もしくは地獄谷の雪猿の方を見たいと。

でもホワイトリングとその他のオリンピックの施設のお蔭で、長野は世界的に有名になりました。その意味で、今でもホワイトリングはオーラが感じます。

Thanks to the '98 Winter Olympics, Nagano City was left with several unique venues, including this White Ring. During the Olympics, figure skating and short track speed skating took place in White Ring. Now the facility hosts concerts and sporting events.

Our son's futsal soccer tournament took place in White Ring last weekend. As it was my first time to go there, I took a peek inside and took some pictures.

Thanks to the Nagano Olympics, many people overseas are familiar with the name 'Nagano'.
My NInJA Project buddies and I are working on a survey of foreign tourists in Nagano. We are finding that many people first heard of Nagano from the Olympics. However, few are actually interested in seeing the Olympic venues. They are more likely to come to Nagano for the mountains and culture (and snow monkeys!). But even today, you can get a sense of the Olympic grandeur by going to White Ring.

松代の街歩きＮＰＯ「夢空間」の三田さんが亀清旅館に顔を出して頂きました。戸倉上山田温泉のお客さ及び海外からの旅行者との取り組みについて色々と話し合いました。

三田さんは亀清のロビーに上がって、まずは「あっ、フロントに松代焼が飾ってあります！」と喜んでくれました。そうです。我々亀清旅館は地元の陶芸、松代焼が大好きです。若女将と二人で松代陶苑に陶芸体験はしましたし。自分達の手で造ったお皿は時々、亀清のお客さんに出す料理に使います。

そして、私に嬉しい話とは、ずっと改造工事中だった松代の真田邸の磨きはやっと完成されたそうです。十何年前に一度行った時に、建物の建築とその庭園で感動した覚えがあります。こちらに戻ってきてから、真田邸はずっと工事中でした。4，5年間かかった工事はやっと終わりました。更に感動的になったでしょう。久しぶりにまた行くのは楽しみにしています。

私は千曲サイクリングの市民サイクリングのイベントで松代の周辺の風林火山・戦国時代の歴史や、お城、文蔵学校、象山神社、休憩所（山寺常山邸がお勧め！）、そして隠れ湧水スポットは回っています。そして家族で松代温泉（鉄のお湯が特徴）や明徳寺の一本桜も行っています。

でも、三田さんとお話ししたら、私たちの知らない松代がまだまだ沢山の良い所があるそうです。寺町の周辺の風情のある古いお寺さんが何か所にあるそうで、松代陶苑さん以外な陶芸家、明徳寺の手前の皆神山がＵＦＯやＰｙｒａｍｉｄ等の関係でパワースポットで知られてきたし…

また城こそ、信州の宝物だね！

我が家族の毎年のクリスマスの伝統:　軽井沢へドライブ。美味しいグルメ・レストラン、楽しいお買いもの（洋服や決まった物＠アウトレット、ツリーのオーナメントや変わった物＠旧軽銀座）、聖パウロ教会で少しお祈り、そして夜は心を温まるイルミネーション。このお出かけのお蔭で、すっかりクリスマスのムードになり、家族がすっかり仲良くなる。

It's becoming our family's Christmas holiday season tradition -- going on a drive to spend the day in Karuizawa. It's a chance to try out some of the resort area's gourmet restaurants, plus take care of our Christmas shopping (clothes and the regular gifts at the outlet mall, ornaments for our tree and other special gifts at the Kyu ('old) Karu Ginza shopping street). Plus we get in a little prayer time at the St. Paul's Church, and add some spark to our hearts by enjoying a few of the illumination displays. Our trip to Karuizawa never fails to put us in the Christmas mood and to give our family some quality time with each other.

Throughout December, Karuizawa holds several Christmas-related events. The information center inside the Karuizawa Station is a very good source of seasonal news. So why don't you come and make a winter memory with your family? And be sure to come to Kamesei to soak in our onsen baths afterwards.

Karuizawa is 1 hour by car using the expressway to Kamesei Ryokan and our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada. Or by train, it take from 45 minutes to 75 minutes to Togura Station.

青空の冬の日曜日。家族で何をしょうかな？決まり:　上田市の「市民の森」屋外スケート場へ行こう！

我が家族は毎年、アイススケートをやるのが楽しみです。以前はM-Waveでやりましたが、今回は上田市の上右（？）の方(菅平と浅間さんラインの間ぐらいにある）の市民の森スケート場に行ってみました。美ヶ原や日本アルプスの山景色を眺めながらアイススケートを楽しめました。

スケート場は夏にゴ・カートになるそうです。(本当は氷の上でゴカートを走れば楽しそうですが…)　乗馬もあるし、なかなかいい公園です。

上田市「市民の森」は亀清旅館・戸倉上山田温泉から車で高速で約45分でした。詳しくはHPへ。

A sunny winter Sunday in Nagano. What was a family to do? We decided to go ice skating!

Every winter, our family heads to a skating rink. In the past, we'd mostly gone to M-Wave in Nagano City. This year, we decided to check out the "Shimin-no-Mori" (Citizens Forest) park in Ueda City. From their outdoor skating rink, you can enjoy views of Utsukushi-ga-hara, the Japanese Alps, and other mountains. It makes skating that much more fun to be in the outdoors. Our kids (and their parents!) loved it.

This Shimin-no-mori park is pretty cool. In the summer time, the skating rink is converted to a go-kart track (although, I for one would love to try go-karts on the ice!), and there is horse back riding, too. It took about 45 minutes from our inn, Kamesei Ryokan, to drive to the park using the expressway. Details available on the park's website (in Japanese only).

一昨日は子供達と一緒に上田市の中心街でぶらぶらしました（上ブラ？）。昨日は今度、亀清旅館の若女将と二人でデートで行きました。行先は:柳町のパン屋さん「ルヴァン」。

以前にもルヴァンでお昼を食べた事があったので、その時に建物の雰囲気やお料理を気に入って、「今度は磨利ちゃんと一緒に行きたい」と思いました。昨日はやっとその願う事の実現が出来ました。二人でルヴァンの酒蔵跡の趣のあるインテリアで、ルヴァンならできる奥深さのあるパンに合わせた昼食を食べた。素晴らしい思い出になりました。

お二人の皆様にお勧めです。

ちなみに、ルヴァンの展示スペースに、１２月９日から１２月２１日まで「小さな宝物」という展示会が行うそうです。紹介されている作家が私たちの知り合い、Ｕｄｏさん。上田在住のＵｄｏさんは古民家から箪笥とかをＲｅｓｃｕｅして、磨いて、打っているのです。亀清旅館で彼の作品は４つも買ってあって、客室で使っています。今回の展示化は日本家具ではなくて、カントリースタイル家具だそうです。

是非、この機会で上田市の柳町のルヴァンにお出かけしてみてください。　お二人で。

The day before yesterday, I went to Ueda City with our kids. Yesterday I went again, this time with my wife Mari, for a lunch date. We went to the bread shop "Levain" in Ueda's Edo-era "Yanagi-Machi" district. The shop is in an old sake brewery 'kura' warehouse, and oozes with historical charm as well as every where you look, cute, humourous touches. And the food -- the only other way to get bread of this caliber is to take a trip back to Old World countries, like Switzerland.

We were pleased to see that Levain's upcoming art exhibition features country style furniture by our Austrian buddy, Udo. We have several of Udo's 'tansu' (Japanese chests) pieces in the guestrooms of our inn here at Kamesei. "Small Treasures" runs from December 9th thru the 21st -- a perfect excuse to go and check out Levain.

現代では江戸時代の建物の必要性はある？このインタネットの時代に本屋さんは要りますか？

江戸時代の建物の中の本屋さんはどうですか？それこそ、時代遅れじゃない？

夕べは家族で軽井沢の追分コロニーという「村の古本屋」に行きました。亀清旅館の庭師、岡田英人さんが本屋さんの裏の部屋に展示会を開催していました。「あけび、秋いろ、浅間山」という展示会で、河村目呂二の描いた追分の秋の俳画とスケッチに合わせて、岡田さんが生きた花苗を使って、会場を装飾しました。目呂二さんの絵で出たあけびなどの植物を使って、立体的に表現した様な。建物の趣に、目呂二さんの絵に、岡田さんの花の飾り、目がたっぷり楽しまれる空間でした。

本屋さんの方も、古本を見始まったら、切りがないぐらいにはまりました。私に日本建築の本を、子供達のクリスマスプレゼントに私が子供頃に読んだ本の日本語に訳した何冊（一つは村上春樹訳！）を、そして我が宿のライブラリィになんと１１４年前の本を買いました。１８９６年にウェストン氏の書いた「日本の山岳」。なかなか手に入れない本です。

目呂二ｘ永楽屋ガーデンの岡田さんのディスプレーは１１月３日で終わりましたが、古本屋の追分コロニーはずっとやっています。次の軽井沢の旅に寄ってみたらいかがですか？周辺に美味しいおそば屋さんもあるし、楽しいお出かけになるでしょう。

Are Edo-era building relevant in this day and age? And with the prevalence of the internet, is there any use for bookstores any more?

And what about a bookstore in an Edo-era building? Totally outdated?

Last night our family went for a drive to a bookstore called Oiwake Colony, located in the feudal-era post town of Oiwake in Karuizawa. Kamesei Ryokan's gardener, Okada-san had a display of his gardening prowess in a colloboration with Kawamura Meroji's paintings and sketches. Mejiro was active in the middle of the 20th century, and much of his artwork was inspired by Asama Mountain and the flora around Karuizawa. One of his favorite plants to draw was akebi (chocolate vine). Okada-san brought Meroji's drawings to life, with displays of plants depicted in the paintings including, of course, akebi. The ambience of the centuries-old architecture of the building along with Meroji's artwork and Okada-san's flower and plant displays was a treat for the eyes!

And then I wandered over to look at the used books side. Everywhere I looked, there was another treasure. I am reading some Beverly Cleary books to our kids now, and they had some translated into Japanese. And a Shel Silverstein book, also in Japanese, translated by one of my favorite Japanese authors, Murakami Haruki. How in the world could he put those poems into Japanese? Needless to say, I picked up several books for our kids' Christmas presents. And I picked up a book for Kamesei Ryokan's library, one written in 1896 -- Weston's seminal "The Japanese Alps".

If you take a trip to Karuizawa, I highly suggest stopping at Oiwake to browse at the bookstore, With a highly-regarded soba restaurant right across the street, it is easy to make an afternoon out of it.

長野県に有名な街道の宿場はいくつかがある。南信の妻籠宿と東信の海野宿が整理して、江戸時代の風情が味わえて、観光地として成り立っている。

しかし、所々に観光に向かって綺麗に直されていない宿場もあります。江戸時代の面影を残しながら、普通な人たちが普通に生活している所。今日はその人地に訪ねてみました：善光寺街道の麻績宿。

麻績村は静かな小さな村、人口約３０００人。中心的に位置してある聖高原駅（JR篠ノ井線）から少し上がれば、松本と長野市をつなぐ善光寺街道の麻績宿があります。稲荷山宿（千曲市）と青柳宿（築北村）の間になる。

最近は街道巡りする方が増えてきている。その中で、麻績宿は交通便が比較的にいい：長野道の麻績ICから２～３分、聖高原駅から歩いて５～６分。

麻績宿は観光地図にあまり載っていない。しかし、言わせて頂けたら、観光臭くない所が良いです。麻績宿は歴史資料館っぽくなくて、実際の人達が実際に生活している。昔の建物は色々と不便でしょうけど、壊さないで大事に残して使っているのは偉いと思います。

麻績宿は中央道・長野道経由で戸倉上山田温泉にお越しになる場合、お勧めの寄り処。麻績ICで降りて、麻績宿をぶらぶらしてから国道４０３号で聖湖まで登って、下りる時は国道じゃなくて、猿ヶ馬場峠の細い道を通れば、善光寺街道の匂いをプンプンしながら歴史的な桑原地区に出ます。そこから亀清まで約１５分です。素晴らしいドライブコースになる。

Nagano Prefecture has its share of 'shukuba' post towns along the various 'kaido' roads that led to feudal Edo. Tsumago in southern Nagano and Unno-juku in eastern Nagano are two of the most well-restored, and hence popular with tourists.

Today I visited a lesser-known post town, Omi-juku, which lies on the old Zenkoji Kaido that connects Matsumoto and Nagano City. It is located in the village that bears its name, tiny, sleepy Omi village, population of a tad over 3,000 souls. Just up from Hijiri Kogen Station (JR Shinonoi Line) which is located pretty much in the center of the village is Omi-juku, a stretch of road with many buildings dating to the Edo period.

You won't find Omi-juku on many tourist maps. But it is just that sense of non-touristy-ness that makes it so appealing. It isn't a well-preserved history museum -- it's real houses lived in by real people, peole that put up with the lack of modern conveniences and lovingly use and maintain the original buildings.

It's also surprisingly convenient by either car (just 2-3 minutes from the Omi IC on the Nagano Expressway) or a simple 5-6 minute walk up from Hijiri Kogen station. So if you have the time and inkling to explore one of Nagano's lesser-known 'kaido' treasures, Omi-juku would make an excellent choice.

上高地の日本アルプスの大自然

...どうやってその二つをつなげるか？

上高地の観光を研究している仲間と中央タクシーで働いている仲間が知恵を絞って、新しいタクシーツアーを開発するようになりました。タクシーが旅館にお迎えに行って、直接上高地まで載せて行く。お客さんが梓川・河童橋の周辺を散歩したり、ピクニックしたりゆっくりしてから、又タクシーに乗って旅館まで載せたり、途中の松本駅や長野駅で降ろしたりするツアーです。

昨日は試験的にモニターツアーが行われました。渋湯田中温泉に泊まっているアメリカ人二人と、この亀清旅館に泊まっていたドイツのお客さんが参加しました。山が好きなドイツ人がすごい笑顔で帰ってきました。

亀清旅館に泊まる外国人旅行者の中で、２，３泊の場合が多いです。一日は日帰りでお猿の温泉「地獄谷」へ行区として、他の日は戸隠へ行ったり、松本城へ行ったり、もしくは戸倉上山田温泉の周辺でレンタサイクルでうろうろしたり、温泉の上の山城「荒砥城」へ登ったり、大衆演劇や貯金箱館を見たりするというパターンが多いです。今度はこの楽な上高地オプショナル‐ツアーが出来たら嬉しいです。

...How to connect the two?

A buddy of mine researching Kamikochi and another buddy working for Chuo Taxi put their heads together and came up with a proposal: A taxi tour taking guests from their inns straight to Kamikochi. The guests get to spend the day walking the trails around Kappa-bashi bridge and Azusa River, stopping for a leisurely picnic lunch, and enjoying the high altitude clean air and mountain scenery. Then they ride the taxi back to their inns or to get dropped off at Matsumoto or Nagano Stations to take the train to their next destination.

Yesterday, Chuo Taxi did a trial run as a monitor tour. Two Americans staying in Shibu Yudanaka Onsen and a German staying here at Kamesei participated. The German, who has a passion for mountains, came back with the biggest smile! Apparently he really enjoyed seeing the Alps.

Many of our foreign guests here at Kamesei stay for 2 or 3 days. They often make a day trip to see the snow monkeys at Jigokudani. For their other days, more day trips to spiritual Togakushi Mountain (and the ninjas!) or Matsumoto Castle. Or they rent bicycles to explore the area, or walk up to the mountain castle above our town, or stick around and enjoy the geisha drag show, piggy bank museum, or any number of enjoyable activities.

A convenient optional tour to Kamikochi would be a fantastic addition!

「日本の宿」

何階建ての鉄筋コンクリート建物？

それか木造の平屋、坪と中庭、渡り廊下、離れ風の部屋…

私は亀清旅館を憧れる理由、後継ぐ為に態々守りにきた理由は亀清の作りです。鉄筋・コンクリートの一部はあるけど、ほとんどは木造で、中庭があって、渡り廊下があって、坪庭や離れ風の部屋があって、とってもいい雰囲気だと私が思います。日本らしい。旅館らしい。

「渡り廊下」と言えば、「別所温泉の花屋が一番参考になる」とよく聞かれました。昨日の旅館青年部研修会で花屋に泊まりました。私には初めてでした。やっと噂の花屋。やっとその有名な渡り廊下。いくつかがあって、食堂やお風呂へ、あちらこちらにつないでいました。花屋の渡り廊下ははらきって、壁がないです。真冬は寒くていやだという声もあるらしいけど、そういう人は甘い！花屋はただの歴史資料館や博物館だけじゃない。本物の実際な旅館。大正時代、そのまま。私は涎（よだれ）だらけでした。何階建ての「モダン」コンクリート建物より、やはりこういう趣のある宿を憧れる。

我が亀清旅館はスケールが全然小さいけど、私にとってはとってもいい参考になりました。

"Nihon no Yado" means a Japanese Inn.

It also means wooden buildings, koi ponds, tsubo-niwa pocket gardens, detached guest rooms, and, perhaps most importantly, 'watari-roka' passageways connecting them all.

It doesn't mean multi-story ferro-concrete buildings.

One of the things that has attracted me so much to Kamesei Ryokan, in fact has led me to move here to continue the business, is that while there is one ferro-concret part, most of the inn is built of wood, with a koi pond in the center, pocket gardens throughout, semi-detached guest rooms, and ... a 'watari-roka' passageway connecting everything.

When it comes to 'watari-roka', the venerable Ryokan "Hanaya" in historical Bessho Onsen reigns supreme. I had always heard about Hanaya and yesterday I finally had a chance to go, as part of the ryokan junior association's study seminar. I finally got to see and walk those fabled passageways. Hanaya takes 'watari-roka' to the extreme, by leaving the sides open to the gardens. Some people complain of the bitter cold in the winter. To them, as my grandpa used to say, "tough titties." This ain't a history museum. It's an actual, working ryokan built in the Taisho Era and lovingly maintained in its original beauty. Hanaya left me drooling in awe and appreciation. You simply cannot get this much character out of a ferrconcrete building.

Hanaya is incomparably smaller vaster and luxurious than Kamesei is, and left me inspired.

想像の世界？

いいえ、長野県の端っこ、新潟と群馬の県堺に切明温泉があります。一軒宿の雄川閣で車を止めて、吊り橋を渡って、川辺まで下がる。熱過ぎる(源泉が約55度だそうです）お湯溜りを避けながら、お湯と川水が混ざっている所を探す。スコープで川石を動かして、好きなように枚お風呂を作れる。

先日はお猿の温泉に行ったついでに、家族と友達と志賀高原そして奥志賀高原を通って、くねくねの山道を通って、切明温泉に行きました。渋温泉から約４５ｋｍ、約2時間でした。

実は17年ぐらい前に磨利ちゃんと一緒にデートで行きました。その時は切明温泉への道がデコボコの林道でした。今は綺麗な道になっている。そのお蔭か、秘湯じゃなくなってきた。雄川閣に色んな有名人のサインがあった(亀清旅館にも来てくれたＵｄｏちゃんのサインも）し、川辺で沢山の人がいて、にぎやかでした。

一度はうちの子供達も川の中の、自分でお風呂を掘るこの切明温泉を体験さしたかった。(なおかつ、信州の自然が大好きな私もお盆の仕事の疲れをここで取りたかった！）
本当に自分で石を動かして、お風呂を作る。
本当に川の水で温度調整。
本当に川の中から温泉のお湯がぶくぶく浮かぶ。
なおかつ、そのぶくぶくポイントがいつも変わる。あっちから出ったり、そっちに移ったり、おい！おい！こっちに来たり、本当に自然な現象。

切明温泉はどの時期でも楽しめるけど、「秋山郷」にあるので、名前通り、秋は紅葉で最高でしょう。場所はすごく不便だけど、だからこそ行くのは楽しい冒険になる。

温泉の大好きな私のお勧めです。

Onsen water coming up out of a river bed?
You take a shovel to make your own bath?
And you adjust the water temperature by mixing in river water?

Sounds like something out of an onsen legend. But it's not just a myth -- it actually exists: Kiriake Onsen in the northern corner of Nagano Prefecture near the borders with Niigata and Gunma Prefectures. You park your car at the lone ryokan, Yusenkaku, grab a shovel, cross the suspension bridge, walk down to the river, take care to avoid the onsen hot spots (the onsen temperature is supposedly 57 deg C), find an area where the temperature is to your liking and move the rocks around until you have your own little onsen pool.

The other day, after we visited the snow monkeys, our family and some friends drove up and through Shiga Kogen and Oku-Shiga Kogen along the windy mountain road to Kiriake (approx. 45km and 2hours from Shibu-Yudanaka Onsen area).

Actually, Mari and I came here about 17 years ago when we were just dating. Back then, the road to Kiriake was a bumpy gravel one. It's been paved since then, which may be the reason it's lost some of it's 'hidden' charm. Judging by the number of celebrity signatures, and by how many other people were there that day, the secret is out.

I had always wanted to have our kids experience this onsen-in-the-middle-of-a-river where you build a bath yourself. Plus, I was needing a relaxing break from the O-Bon holiday rush. For me, this combination of natural setting and onsen is perfectly sublime.

The onsen water does actually bubble up right in the middle of the river.
You do actually adjust the temperature yourself by mixing in river water.
And, being that it's all a natural phenomenom, the onsen keeps bubbling up in different spots. First over there, then over here, then, Ooh la la!, right here!

Although Kiriake is enjoyable any time of the year, being that it is located in the Akiyama ("autumn mountain") District, it's is probably at its prettiest when the fall leaves are in color. It's location is very inconvenient, but that makes finding it that much more enjoyable. There really isn't any bus access, so a car is highly recommended.
