今日は晴れた空の下で千曲川で鮎つり大会が行いました。スポンサーのスポニチの皆様が亀清に泊まってくれました。つれたかどうか知りませんが、こういう天気のいい日に川に入るのが最高！
Today there was an Ayu Fishing Tournament on the Chikuma river. The sponsor was Sports Nihon newspaper, and their organizers spent the night here at Kamesei. It didn't look like many fish were being caught, but the river felt nice and cool in the warm sun.

Just when you think you're starting to get a handle of things here in Japan, along comes a 'Tokan'. This evening, I was out behind our inn and heard a large explosion ("To-Kan"). At the park behind Kamesei, there was a funky truck with a bunch of people gathered around. It turned out to be an old guy, Arai-san, popping rice. I ran and got our kids, and a bunch of rice, and went back to experience the 'Tokan' in person. He looked at me and said, "I saw you on TV. I've been on TV 90 times, and will be on again next month." I didn't have the heart to tell him that I don't watch the boob tube. Anyways, he went on to explain that he has been doing 'Tokan' for 30+ years, longer than anyone else (presumably in the world). After tasting it, I could understand his popularity!
日本の生活に慣れてきたなと思ったら、「とっかん！」　亀清の裏の方に行ったら、近所の公園からでかい爆発の音が聞こえた。行ってみたら、ある面白い軽トラの周りに沢山の人が集まっていた。荒井おじさんがお米をポップしていた。亀清に戻って、息子達とお米をゲットして、とっかんを直接体験する為に新井さんのところに戻った。「テレビに出たよね」と言われちゃった。「わしも90回テレビに出た。来月にまた出る！」と。（「私はテレビを見ないと言えなかった。。。）話によると、新井さんが30年間以上とかんをやってきました。日本（世界？）一長くだそうです。味は美味しい訳だ！

Cafeクロスロードに行ったら、花の写真展があって、そして写真家の佐藤富男さんの本人もいらっしゃいました。私が一番感動した写真はセツブンソウの大きく写っている写真でした。私も何度もチャレンジしたけど、その可愛いらしい小さい花は特別なマクロレンズが無い限りでなかなか綺麗に写れないです。７月１１にまでに展示の予定です。詳しくはＴｅｌ　０２６－２７２－２６６２．
Today I went to Cafe Crossroad and they happened to have a flower picture display going in their gallery. And the photographer, Tomio Satoh, happened to be there in person. His picture of the teeny setsubunsou flower was magnificent! Gallery Display through 11-July.

The Summer Line-Up for Taisho-Kan has been released. The geisha themed dance and theatrical performance (with many of the performers in drag) plays twice daily: 1pm and 8pm. The theater is only a 4 minute walk from Kamesei, and we sell discount tickets. Try something different this summer -- check out Taisho-kan.

千曲川のつけば・川の家に寄ってみました。鮠の時期が終わりかけですが、お釣りの皆さんは鮎の解禁を楽しみにしています。６月２０日の予定です。亀清旅館ではうちの板長がそれに合わせて鮎塩焼きもそのごろにスタート！お楽しみに！
Yesterday we went down to one of the fishing shacks on the Chikuma River. The Haya season is apparently finishing up, and the fishermen are looking forward to the start of the Ayu season, which is scheduled for June 20th this year. Our chef will start a special Ayu dish then, too.

戸倉上山田温泉から歩いて２０分で千曲川の側にこんなに綺麗なラベンダー畑があります。今日は子供達と自転車で行きました。ラベンダー狩りがじゆに出来るところです。ラベンダーはなんとなく信州の自然、この戸倉上山だの山と川の景色に合います。
In a spot along the Chikuma River about 20 minutes on foot from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen are these beautiful lavender fields. The kids and I rode our bicycles down to see them. The city lets people pick the lavender to decorate at their homes. The soft purple waves of lavender blooms somehow match the natural beauty of Nagano and the river and mountain setting of our onsen town.

戸倉上山田温泉に市場は２つある：１０月までの毎週日曜日の朝６時半からの朝市と毎週金曜日のかめ乃湯通り夕市です。朝市は段々と大きくなってきていますが、夕市はこれで２年目だけですからまだ育っているところです。先日は私が亀清の名物（？）若旦那手作りクッキーを朝市で売りました。夕べは夕市の方に。せかっくその通りの皆様が頑張っていますので形になる応援したかった。宿泊客様も近所の皆様も楽しめる市場になるように、継続で頑張りましょう！
Togura Kamiyamada Onsen has 2 weekly farmers markets going on through October: The Sunday Morning market at the main park, and the Friday Evening Market on Kame-no-yu Toori (Street). The Sunday Morning one has been going for several years and gets bigger each year. The Friday Evening one is just in its second year and is still just starting out. A couple of weeks ago I helped out at the Sunday Market by selling my home-made cookies, and last night I did the same for the Evening Market. It's impressive to see the people in the neighborhood get together to put on the market. Things like this have to start somewhere, and need sweat equity to get going. Not that selling cookies is a sweaty job, but I wanted to help out in a meaningful way.

戸倉上山田温泉の隣の坂城町に「鉄の展示館」があり、６月２２日までの展示が「刀工キース・オースチン延平とその周辺展」です。今日は坂城住民のキーナーさんと行って来ました。展示かによると、平成９年になくなったアメリカ生まれのオースチンさんは外国人として歴史上初めて刀を作る許可を日本政府からもらったそうです。その以降も研修している方が多いけれど許可を得れたのはオースチンさんだけだそうです。本人は日本酒も好きだったそうです。どういう関係か分からないけれど、展示会の中で何度も書いてありました。まあ、この青い眼の若旦那がオースチンさんと一杯を飲みたかったな。
Next to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is Sakaki Town, in which there is a Katana Museum. I went there today with Sakaki resident Keener-san. On display through June 22 is a feature on the first foreigner in history to get certified by the Japanese government to make katana swords. Apparently there have been many foreigners since who have studied, but Keith Austin (American, died 1997) is the first and only to achieve certification. The display also mentioned Keith-san loved Japanese sake. I'm not sure what the connection to katana was, but I wish me, the first blue-eyed ryokan innkeeper, could have shared a sake with Keith, the first blue-eyed katana-smith.

千曲市の国際室と我が千曲国際交流協会のプロデュースで杏ホールで「千曲万博」は今日、行いました。亀清の宿泊のお客さんも楽しめました。うちの子供達はココナツからミルクを飲むのがヒットでした。
Chikuma City's Int'l Dept. and our Chikuma International Cultural Exchange Assoc. put on the Chikuma Expo in Anzu Hall today. A group of Kamesei Ryokan's guests went, too. Our kids enjoyed drinking coconut milk out of a real coconut the most.

戸倉上山田温泉の夏祭りの準備が既に始まっています。今年の上山田温泉夏祭りは７月１９日と２０日です。芸者神輿と「どこどこどっこい」の獅子舞で有名です。とにかく、迫力のある祭りです。
戸倉温泉の千曲川の上の花火大会は８月７日です。花火の光が川で反射して、音が回りの山で反射して、最後の万葉橋の「ナイアガラ」が最高です。

Kamiyamada Onsen's Summer Festival is July 19th and 20th (Umi-no-hi holiday weekend). Togura Onsen's Chikuma River Fireworks display is August 7th.
