おきゃくさまに戸倉駅へ連れて行く途中で駅の上の天狗公園によりました。日本一大きい天狗と言う説があるので美咲ちゃんは納得できたようです。公園の桜の木の葉っぱの皆が落ちていました。冬がこれから始まりそうです。今年の秋の紅葉は遅れてきたけどうんと綺麗でした。
On the way to dropping a guest off at Togura Station, we stopped at the Tengu park on the hill above the station. The Tengu (=goblin) statue is supposedly the tallest in the country. Our daughter Misaki sure was impressed by the size. The leaves on all of the cherry trees in the park had already fallen. It feels like winter is just around the corner. The fall colors seemed to take their time in coming this year, but they sure were beautiful!

千曲市の観光協会と戸倉上山田温泉の名人物、村越さん、の提供で今日は千曲川でポールウォーキングのイベントが行いました。普通のウォーキングと違って、上半身も使いますのでかなりいい運動になります。私も参加しましたのでファンになりました。

Chikuma City's Tourism Bureau in colloboration with Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's jack-of-all-trades Murakoshi-san, put on a Nordic Pole Walking demonstration today. Myself and other innkeepers got to participate. We tried out the poles while walking along the banks of the Chikuma River. Compared with normal walking, it gives you quite a good upper body workout. I'm hooked!

｢戸倉駅に着きましたので送迎をお願いします｣と言う電話が来ました。いつもの様にお迎えに行きました。そして、亀清に戻る途中でお客様にお聞きしました。直接で宿に行きますか？それか、せっかくお天気が良いので温泉街の上のお寺さんからの眺めを寄って行きましょうか？　と言う訳で、今日はまた戸倉上山田温泉の｢善光寺別院｣に行きました。４１年前に出来た建物の塗装がはげかけているけど、でかい提灯や天井の絵、そして、特に戸倉上山田温泉と千曲川の眺めが感動的。玄関や周りの灯篭が特徴です。日本の独特の｢和｣を感じます。
このお寺さんとの眺めを楽しんでから、隣の奥津神社にも寄ります。子供を作ろうとしているカップルさん達の為の神社なので｢オブジェ｣は２つがあります。残念ながら、写真は禁止ですが、その男の｢オブジェ｣が温泉夏祭りの時に下まで下ろされて、４０人ぐらいなお神輿で温泉街を回ります。違う意味で感動的です。(笑）
善光寺別院は亀清旅館と戸倉上山田温泉から車で５分。歩いても行けます。(汗はかけます！）
"We just arrived at Togura Station. Can you come and pick us up?" Here starts another afternoon. Another fun afternoon. After picking up the guests, I ask if they want to go directly to Kamesei, or if they would like to stop at the temple at the top of the hill behind the town to see the view. This temple is a "Betsu-In" (sub-temple) of the huge Zenkoji Temple in Nagano city. The building was constructed 41 years ago during the peak of our onsen town, but is starting to show its age with peeling paint and more. But it is still impressive with the giant chochin lantern and the dragon painting on the ceiling, as well as the view overlooking Togura Kamiyamada Onsen and the Chikuma River. And the 'toro' lanterns that line the steps have that classical 'Japan' feel.
Next to the temple is Okutsu Shrine, dedicated to couples who are trying to make babies. Accordingly, there are a couple of 'objects' on display. Unfortunately, photos aren't allowed, so I can't show a pic of the objects on this blog. But to give you an idea, the male 'object' is brought down to the bottom during our town's summer festival and is paraded around town by 40 people on a portable 'omikoshi' shrine.
The temple is a 5 minute drive from Kamesei and the town, or a brisk 25 minute walk.

戸倉上山田温泉から車で5分のところで、千曲川沿いの万葉スポーツエーリアがあります。野球のグラウンドやマレットのコースがあります。その中で、サッカーフィールドもあります。今日は長男のＡｎｄｙ君の戸上サッカークラブの試合がありました。秋の空の下で五里ヶ峰のバックと言う場面が最高でした。
About 5 minutes by car from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is the Manyo Sports Area along the bank of the Chikuma River. There are baseball fields and 'mallet golf' courses, along with a couple of soccer fields. Today, our oldest son Andy had a soccer game there and we went to cheer him on. I can't imagine a better setting for soccer than under Nagano's Autumn sky with Gorigamine mountain as a backdrop.

戸倉上山田温泉の町興し｢カラコロにぎわい協議会」のお料理イベントは今日、行いました。我々旅館の皆が準備したので20件ぐらいの宿が地元の材料を生かした自慢の一品を出しました。それぞれの板前さん達に良い刺激になったようで、千曲市との周辺で取れている食材の認識度もアップになりました。女性4人の厳しい目でＪｕｄｇｅされた中で、亀清旅館のＣｈｅｆ武井さんがアイディア賞を取れました。
板長の皆はきっと｢どうやってお客様に喜んで頂けるか｣とは既に考えているけれど、その上にこの競争の刺激を与えたらこの戸倉上山田温泉の全体のレベルはきっと上がると思います。亀清旅館の夕食はＣｈｅｆ武井の腕のお蔭で既に評判が良い(じゃらんネットの満点5点の4.6)なのですが、地元の食材を更に生かして生きたいと思っております。
Our town's Kara-Koro Civic Improvement Assoc. held a Culinary Competition today, with us ryokan members running the event. Twenty or so inns presented a representative dish using local ingredients and were strictly judged by four local ladies. Kamesei's Chef Takei received the "Best Idea Award" All of the chefs in town work hard to prepare meals that meet the satisfaction of the guests, but a competition like this really adds a spice to their creativity. Our chef's dinners are especially highly rated (4.6 out of 5 on our Jalan -- our main Japanese reservation system website), but I am hoping for further improvement, especially with respect to using local ingredients.

戸倉上山田温泉と戸倉駅をつなぎ、千曲川を渡る大正橋。晴れた日は眺めが特に綺麗です。日本一長い川、千曲川の河川敷はバードワーチングに最適です。周りの山が緑でほっとします。そして、橋実態は綺麗なデザインだし、表面に赤い石は９９個がうめてあります。河で１００個目を見つかると。。。　その伝説をまたお聞きになってください。

Taisho Bridge spans the Chikuma River, connecting Togura Kamiyamada Onsen with Togura Station. The view from the bridge on a sunny day is spectacular. You have the Chikuma River, Japan's longest, flowing below, with many species of birds and water fowl all around (a paradise for bird watching). And on either side, there are forested hills -- so relaxing! The bridge itself is a graceful design. There are 99 red stones embedded on the bridge surface. If you find 1 more red stone down at the river, you will have good luck with ... Well, you'll have to come and ask me to tell you the legend.

町のハロウィーンのイベントが今週末(１０月１９日)です。私はまた実行委員長なので特におばけ屋敷に力を入れています。今年はおばけ屋敷をハロウィーンの参加者だけではなく、同時開催のそば祭りの参加者も、宿泊者も楽しめるように１０月１８日(土）６ｐｍ～９ｐｍと１０月１９日(日)１１ａｍから４ｐｍまでやる予定です。おばけ屋敷はかなり怖いぞ！勇気のある方はどうぞ！１９日にかぼちゃランタン作りも行いますけど、当日は私たちが忙しいので近所当地の子供達が亀清の玄関で集まって、かぼちゃのランタンを作りました。
Our town's Halloween Festival is this weekend, Sunday 19-Oct. Once again I am the Festival director, and this year I am putting most of my effort into the Haunted House. Last year it was just for the Halloween participants, but this year we are opening it up to guests of the inns as well as the Soba Festival participants. (That goes on at the same time as Halloween.) The hours will be from 5pm to 9pm on Saturday 18-Oct. and 11am to 4pm on Sunday 19-Oct. Come if you dare!
There will be pumpkin carving at the festival, but since I will be busy then, our kids and a bunch of the kids from the neighborhood gathered in front of Kamesei to carve our jack o'lanterns last night.

戸倉上山田温泉の中で今の流行のプリサーブフラワーのお洒落のお店が出来ました。Ｂａｍｂｏｏという名前。特別な日の記念として最適な小物を扱っています。
この経済の不安の中で、新しいお店を開くのは勇気が必要。そして、プリサーブフラワーの様なクラフト的なお店は大変でしょう。でも、若くて格好良い若旦那（？）が新鮮なスムーズなスタイルで是非応援したいと思っております。
Here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen a new shop opened up. Atelier Bamboo sells preserved flower decorative items -- perfect little items to commemorate a special anniversary.
In today's turbulent economy, it's hard enough to open a new shop, let alone an atelier like this. But the owner is a stylish young man with a smooth sense of style. I whole-heartedly support his endeavors!

日本は自動販売機の天国です。（逆に多すぎるから地獄だと言う声もあり。。。）富士山の頂上にもあるぐらい。そして、色んな品物を売っている。
戸倉上山田温泉の何箇所でこの自動販売機もある：卵！今朝は次男のＫｅｎちゃんと買いに行きました。新鮮で美味しかったです。
Japan is Vending Machine Heaven (or Hell, depending on how you look at it). There are even some on the top of Mt. Fuji. And they sell all kinds goods.
Here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, we have several vending machines that sell: Eggs! This morning, our #2 son and I bought some for our breakfast. The were nice and fresh, and very flavorful. So if you have an urge for eggs and can't make it to the grocery store in time, we have you covered!
