森「あんずの里」のスケッチパークへ行ったら、ガイド達のグループが色々と明るくてご親切に案内していました。国際交流協会の仲間もメンバーでした。千曲市のボランティアガイド「楽知会」でした。（長楽寺を知っているという由来だそうです。）今年からあんず祭りの間、スケッチパークの管理をボランティアでやっています。どのあんずの木が一番珍しいとか、色々説明してくれました。

戸倉上山田温泉と楽知会の交流を増やして行きたいですね!

When I went to Sketch Park at Mori's "Anzu no Sato", there was a group of volunteers kindly guiding the guests. They are members of the Rakuchi-kai Chikuma City Volunteer Guides. It was great to see them being so friendly and providing all kinds of information, such as which tree was the most unique, etc.

I hope our Togura Kamiyamada Onsen can have more interaction with these guides!

今年の｢牛に引かれて善光寺」の戸倉上山田温泉から３０ｋｍウォーキングのイベントに私が実行委員の副委員長となっています。従って、スポンサーの信濃毎日新聞に出る広告に協力する義務があった。
こういう宣伝は色んな戦略があります。プランを派手に売る宿もありながら、地味でイメージだけを出す宿もある。まあ、せっかくだから、新しく出来たヒバの露天風呂の宣伝に決めました。
後日の信毎に出るのでお楽しみに。

For this year's "Pulled by an Ox to Zenkoji" annual 30km walk, yours truly is the assistant Organizing Committee chairperson. Kamesei therefore gets the honor of having to cooperate with the town's advert in the local newspaper, Shinmai, who also happens to be a sponsor.
These kind of ads are tricky: do you focus on selling a bunch of particular plans, or do you keep it simple with just an image picture? We decided to use this opportunity to try to get the word out about our new outdoor bath made out of yellow cedar. The add will be coming out in the Shinmai paper in the next couple of days -- keep your eyes out for it!

毎年、戸倉上山田温泉の「おかみの会」が亀清の裏の中央公園でお花見のイベントをやります。桜の木に提灯をかけたり、おでんやもつ煮(私は大好き！）、そして生ビールなどの屋台もやります。去年は桜が予想より早く咲いてしまいまして、終わりかけのころに女将の会のイベントが行われた。ちょっと残念でした。今年は4月10日(金)から12日(日)まで予定になりました。が、昨日の朝も雪がちょっと降ったし、お花がお花見に間に合うかどうか不安です。でも、今日はあたたくなりそうし、何とかなるかもしれない。まあ、花が咲いても団子に負けるし。
Every year, Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's okami-kai ladies group throws a hanami party at Chuo Park behind Kamesei Ryokan. Last year, the cherry trees bloomed earlier than expected, so the party barely catched the tail end of the the blossoms. This year, it is scheduled for the 10th thru 12th of April. Let's see if the cherry blossoms show up in time. There will be a tent with good food and cold drinks, and the trees will be decorated with pretty lights so the merriment can carry on 'til the wee hours.

千曲市の八幡地区に開眼寺というお寺があります。信濃33番札賞の13番で、何百年のあるお寺です。が、時代は時代で一時はこの素敵なお寺が放棄された様です。そこで、長年間アメリカで駐在していて、退職で日本に戻って来た柴田さんがお坊さんになり、その無人お寺にお入りになりました。本当に｢開眼｣寺です！
住職となった柴田さんが開眼寺を修理して、2005年に座禅堂を造りました。キリスト教にも座禅の習慣がありますので私はアメリカで何度もやりました。やはり、精神的のバランスを取るのに重要だなといつも思っています。柴田さんは毎朝5時から座禅をなされているとお聞きしまして、今朝はやっと足を運んで一緒にやらせて頂きました。
そうすると、思ったより辛くなかった。逆に、お客様と一緒にいく分には大丈夫そうです。従って、早速じゃらんネットで座禅体験プランを作りました。善光寺の7年に一度の御開帳の記念にもなると思いました。というのは、この間に善光寺文化体験した時に座禅もあったと分かりました。
取り敢えずは御開帳に合わせて、亀清なりの御開帳プラン：若田旦那と一緒に座禅体験＠開眼寺を実施いたします。そして評判を見て、御開帳後でも延長したいと考えております。ですから、座禅を体験したい方は是非、この機会で亀清旅館・開眼寺をご利用していただきたいです。

Q.御開帳と座禅は関係ないじゃない？
A.御開帳とサーカスも関係ないと思いますが、御開帳の間にキグレ・ニュー・サーカスが開催されています。善光寺お参りは心を磨く目的でもあるのでその意味で座禅は関係になります。

Q.善光寺は座禅の宗派じゃなくて、無宗派でしょう？
A.若旦那がキリスト教；キリスト教にも座禅の習慣があります。座禅こそ、無宗派です。

Q.座禅のやった事ない人でもいい？
A.若旦那が夜に１ポイント座禅レッスン致しますのでご安心してください。

Q.座禅体験はどのぐらい長くやる？
A.約30分です。15分過ぎたら、一回休憩して、足を伸ばして、そしてまた15分。

Q.｢渇」（かつ）はありますか？
A.今朝は私の両肩が棒でたたかれました。たたかれてから住職さんにお礼しました。(何でかな？）初体験でした。キリスト教なりの座禅に｢渇｣があまりない。でも、お蔭で頭の中がしんとして、集中力が戻りました。

Q.座禅体験は商売に使って良いの？
A.亀清旅館で別料金は取らないし、お客さんがいなくても私が実際に言っている物です。亀清のサービスの1つです。我が宿のお湯で体を幸せに、食事でお腹を幸せに、そして座禅で心も幸せに。亀清のおニューのおもてなしです。

In the Yawata area of Chikuma City along the feudal Zenkoji Kaido road between Matsumoto and Nagano City is Kaigan-ji Temple. "Kaigan" means "Open Your Eyes". The name is somehow very appropriate for this temple. You see, it is #13 on the Shinshu (Nagano) 33 Fudashou Temple Pilgrimage and has a history of several hundred years. The main building is supposedly over 400 years old. However, times change, and even this grand temple fell into disuse.

Fortunately, a man named Shibata-san retired from a job overseas (he lived in America for decades), came back and moved into the temple. He started fixing up the place, bringing Kaigan-ji back to its original grandeur. In 2005, he built a special room for zazen. The temple's eyes were truly opened!

When I was living in Seattle, our local church offered meditation sessions very similar to zazen. This morning, I joined Shibata-san for his 5am meditation session. It actually wasn't as difficult to wake up as I thought it would be, and decided to start offering to take guests to these session. I made a Zazen plan on one of our websites and would be happy to take guests there in the morning.

For now, we are offering to take guests to Kaigan-ji for zazen during the course of Gokaicho, the once-every-seven-years event at the big Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City. I recently attended a "Zenkoji Culture Experience" program, and zazen was part of the "taiken". So apparently zazen meditation does have a connection with Zenkoji. Anyways, after Gokaicho finishes, we'll continue our zazen tie-up with Kaigan-ji as the need arises.

Following is a short Q&A regarding zazen meditation at Kaigan-ji

Q. What time is the meditation and how long does it last?
A. Shibata-san does his meditation at 5:15 every morning. From Kamesei, we would leave at 5am. The meditation is for 30 minutes, with a break in the middle to stretch legs.

Q. Can even first-timers do zazen?
A. Shibata-san can teach meditation techniques, and I would be happy to explain the basics the night before as well. So yes, anyone can do it.

Q. What about kids?
A. Shibata-san welcomes kids, too.

Q. How can I get to Kaigan-ji?
A. The temple has its own bus stop: "Kaigan-ji Mae". Unfortunately, Chikuma City's website doesn't show that particular route. I've sent a request for the data, and in English, and will post it if/when it becomes available.
Otherwise, Kamesei offers transporation for the morning zazen sessions for our full customers.

Q. Is it kosher to mix ryokan biz with zazen meditation?
A. I go to Kaigan-ji anyways, even without guests. And when we do take guests, it is for no charge. We provide a refreshing experience for people's physical bodies with our onsen baths, inner bodies with our meals, and now, their souls with the zazen program!

千曲国際交流教会の２００９年イースター・エッグ・フェスティバルのチラシが出来上がりました。今年はイースターの次の土曜日、４月１８日です。午前１０：３０から大体１２：００までです。場所は戸倉上山田温泉の千曲川沿いの噴水の公園です。
子供たちがチョコ入りの卵を探したり、色んなエッグ・ゲームが行います。西洋の文化と味わっていただいて、春らしい｢生まれ変わる」のテーマのイベントです。戸倉上山田温泉の旅館がお風呂も提供する予定です。お子さんが楽しめるイベントなので是非、お越し下さい。(私が実行委員長なので賑やかにしたいと思っています。）
Chikuma Int'l Exchange Assoc.'s 2009 Easter Egg Festival dates have been set. The event will be held the Saturday after Easter, 18-April, from 10:30am until approx. noon, at the fountain park along the Chikuma River in front of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen.
Our Association puts on the event every year to share a little Western tradition with the children in the area. The ryokans even get into the act by sponsoring baths for the participants. Yours truly is the organizing chairperson, so I hope we have a good turnout!

杏の里と戸倉の間の山を越える道からこんなに綺麗な景色がある。車じゃないとこの道はきついでしょうけど、絶品の眺めです。
今週はまた雪が降る予想ですが、基本的に戸倉上山田温泉のホワイトシーズンが終わりました。あと1，2週間でところでどころにピンクなシーズン（杏及び桜のお陰）が始まります。その以降はグリーンシーズンとなる。今はその中田半端のブラウンシーズンです。木の葉っぱはまだ入らない。その分で、山からの眺めが綺麗です。

Here is the view of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen from the mountain pass above Togura Station. It's best reached by car, but the view is spectacular.
The weather report calls for more snow this week, but the winter "White Season" is basically over. In a couple weeks, we'll have pink season (apricot and cherry blossoms) followed by the green season. Until then, we're in the transitional brown season. One nice thing about no leasves on the trees is you can see the view better.

アメリカでサーカスは大体いつもテントでやります。日本もそうみたいです。キグレ新サーカス長野版は今週末から始まっています。今日、会場を通ってみました。こんなでかいテントが張ってありました。うちの子供たちは早速入ってみました。ショーがとても楽しかったようです。1ポイント・アドバイス：自由席はテントのポールや線のせいで見づらいなので指定席は高くつくけどその分の価値がある。

There's something about the circus and tents. Back in the States, people usually do a circus in a huge tent. Japan seems to follow that tradition here. The Kigure New Circus opened their Nagano run this weekend, to huge crowds. One piece of advice, though, the open seating sections have blocked views - it's worth the extra money to upgrade to the reserved seats.

日本中の市町村は｢町興し｣を良く話します。話すだけではなく、実際動くのはなかなか難しいです。行政はやる気があるかどうかはとに書くとして、予算がない。民間の皆はやる気があるけど、メインの仕事もあるから時間がない；お金がもっとないという現状です。
その難しい状態の中で、この戸倉上山田温泉は去年の１０月に足湯が出来て、沢山の体験コースがそろえて、そして本通の中心な場所にあるこの建物の様子は感動的です。｢今、工事現場じゃないか｣と思われるかもしれませんが、それがポイントです。工事しているのです。大正時代の建物の顔を改造している作業です。亀清旅館のヒバの露天風呂の周りを手伝ってくれた村越さんが大工の仕事をしています。県と市と民間がお金を出し合って、旅館の先輩方がコネを使って、その全部を上手く結びました。先輩達の管理、皆の出し合ったお金、そして地元の大工さんの才能、皆の努力のお蔭です。自慢できる和風外観になりそうです。窓に格子、壁にしっくい、日本の伝統的な造りです。ひょっとしたら、周りの建物の皆が真似して外観を和風に改造したくなるかもしれません。
"Civic Improvement" is a term that gets batted around a lot. But it's a lot easier to talk about than to actually do. Government officials don't have the time or energy, nor the budget. Local individuals may have the energy, but not the time as they have full-time jobs to deal with, and they have even less of a budget. Despite all of these difficulties, Togura Kamiyamada is seeing a renaissance of sorts with the building of a footbath last fall, the creation of all sorts of programs for visitors to participate in, and now, the refurbishing of Sarashina-kan. This historical inn, built in the Taisho era, is getting a full face lift, complete with wood grills over the windows and "shikkui" plaster exterior. Perhaps after it is complete, the neighboring buildings will even consider remodelling their exteriors in a more traditional Japanese fashion.

先輩情報によると、３月１６日に発売予定のミシュランガイド・ジャパン緑(観光）版で何と、戸倉上山田温泉の芸者の事が載るようです。去年の６月にミシュランの編集の方が長野に来た時に、千曲市は１０分間のアポが取れて、私がプレゼンを致しました。どういう内容か、３月１６日は楽しみですね。
そして、今日、千曲市の生まれてから初めての英語の観光ガイドもリリースされました。私から言うのは変かもしれないけど、なかなか上手くできました。今度はどんどんと千曲市のPRしていきます。

According to one of the other innkeepers in town, Michelin's Japan Travel Guide (to be out 16-March) will list a new spot in Nagano: Togura Kamiyamada Onsen! Last year, their editor passed through Nagano and our town got a 10 minute appointment with him. Apparently my presentation was effective, as our town's geisha will be featured in the new guide.

Also, today, Chikuma City's first ever English Sightseeing Guidebook was released. Not bad, if I do say so myself. Now our town has the tools to better provide information to guests from overseas.

戸倉上山田温泉の山の手通りで最近に改造した家があって、その玄関にこの人がデビューしました：ウルトラマン！なかなかレトロなマンです。うちの妻の子供のころに温泉の南部公園にウルトラマンの像があったそうです。この感じでしたでしょうか？まあ、この不景気の中でウルトラマンの力も貸して欲しいですね。
There's a house on Yamanote Street here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen that recently remodelled. Now they have this guy standing at the entrance: Ultraman. This 'Man is looking pretty retro. I'm not sure, but my wife tells stories about the onsen's Nanbu Park having a bunch of Ultraman statues when she was a kid. I wonder if they were like this guy. I do know that with this tough economy, we sure could use Ultraman's help.
