戸倉上山田温泉の中で、陶芸屋さんや饅頭、川魚の寒露に、信州味噌、喫茶店などがそろっている銀座通り。４年前から町興しの行事として商店街会が立ち上がれて、その代表のイベントとしては餅つき大会。最初のころは可愛いもんでしたが、年々に知られてきて、年々に賑やかになってきています。今年は昨日、3日に行われました。我が子供達を連れて行きましたので3人ともはつく体験が出来ました。きっと子供にとってはいい思い出になる。個人的に子供も喜べるこういうイベントを応援したいと思っています。

Here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, we have one shopping street that features, among other stores, a pottery shop, river fish shop, miso maker, manju pastry shop, and a funky tea shop / preserved flower workshop. It's called Ginza Dori, and 4 years ago a Business District Association was formed as a part of civic improvement. The district's signature event is an annual mochi making event, where anyone can participate in pounding hot rice into that delicious traditional Japanese treat, sticky mochi rice.
This year's event took place yesterday, January 3rd. Our three kids and I went and had fun pounding the rice with others in the neighborhood. Every year the event gets bigger and bigger. I think it's great to see family-friendly events like this succeed.

我々旅館若旦那達が臭い。布団引きや、朝早くから夜遅くまでの仕事、お風呂に入る余裕無くて、とにかく臭い。
そこで、この戸倉上山田温泉旅館青年部で新しい商品が開発されました。上山田温泉のお湯と、森の杏の里産の杏の種を利用した匂い消しスプレーです。私と他の青年部が使ってみたので効きます。びっくりするぐらいに効きます。
戸倉上山田温泉の旅館組合青年部の副部長の私の全宿が共通でビジネスしょうと言う案のきかけで、部長の中央ホテルの若旦那、小平さんが化粧関係の知り合いと連携して、戸倉上山田温泉のお湯を生かして、そして千曲市の名所の杏の里の杏も生かしたこのスプレーを開発しました。うまく売れると良い！皆様は是非、ご協力をください。

この戸倉上山田温泉で最近に体験コースが話題になっています。マイ味噌作りやステインドグラスなど、近場で色々な体験が出来ています。その中で、私は特に気になっていたのは温泉の銀座通りのatelier BAMBOOのプリサーブフラワー体験でした。先日は息子達を連れて、妻とそのお母さんと叔母さんの為に飾りの花オブジェを作ってきました。店主の佐藤さんが親切にやり方を教えて頂いて、僕達は自分達の手で作るのを楽しめました。花の飾り作りは良い経験になりました。そしてクリスマスプレゼントで手作りのギフトをもらった方も喜んでくれました。
BAMBOOの店の中はうんとお洒落です。佐藤さんのインティリアのセンスが上手。最近はけっこう注目されてきているようです。最新のＮａＯと言う雑誌の信州の「話題の店」Ｔｏｐ１００に選ばれたし、最新のＫｕｒａという雑誌にも紹介されていています。本当に戸倉上山田温泉の宝物の1つだと思います。ここで子供達と一緒に体験が出来て、とっても良かった。
Togura Kamiyamada Onsen has been putting a lot of effort into activities and experiences for people to do. For example, one of the local miso shops lets guests try making their own miso, a stained glass artist can show you how to make your own work of glass art, etc. One of these projects that I have been interested in is the Preserved Flower Decoration Making at atelier BAMBOO. The other day, I took our sons and we went to check it out. The owner, Satoh-san, kindly showed us step-by-step how to put the decoration together. We enjoyed making our little creations by our own hands, and it was a good experience to see how such decorations are made. Then my wife, mother-in-law and aunt were happy to get hand-made presents for Christmas.
BAMBOO is a really cool little shop. Satoh-san really has a sense for the interior decorating for his store. Lately BAMBOO has been attracting a lot of media attention. It is featured in the latest issues of NaO and Kura, two of Nagano's popular local magazines. I for one am really glad we were able to do the preserved flower experience there.

来年に保育園に入る予定の子供達とのお母さん達及び兄弟のお客さんは15人が泊まってくれました。戸倉上山田温泉のカラコロ足湯を入りに出かけに行きました。手ぬぐいを届けしにいったら、15人ともが足湯には入れて、驚きました！｢一緒に入れば？｣と誘って頂きましたが、残念ながら旅館青年部の忘年会、いいえ、年末研修会の予定が入っていたので遠慮しました。来年、保育園は頑張ってね。これだけお母さんパワーがあれば、うまくいくと思います。是非、また上山田温泉のお湯にお入りになってください。

A group of little ones that will be entering pre-school next year and their moms and siblings, a total of 15 people, came to stay with us at Kamesei. They went out for a walk to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's Kara-Koro footbath. When I went to take them some towels, I was surprised to see all 15 of them soaking their feet in the bath. They invited me to join them, but unfortunately I had the ryokan association's junior innkeepers year-end party, err, study session scheduled instead.
I hope all of the soon-to-be preschoolers do well at school. With this much Mom-power, I am sure they will.

先日に紹介した陶芸家のＡｇｎｅｓさんの展示会＠長野市の東急デパートに家族で行ってきました。｢日本人が発想しない｣お酒の徳利とお著っこや、生け花のけんざんなど、素敵な作品が沢山ありました。作品でありながら、実際使えるから尚いいです。亀清旅館でこういうお洒落な陶芸を使う特別なプランを作りたいと思いました。
注：展示会は１６日まで。

As I wrote about a few days ago, local pottery artist Agnes-san is having an exhibition at the grand Tokyu Department Store in Nagano City currently. Our family went to go see it today. I loved the unique sake cups and holders (one Japanese person told me, "Only a non-Japanese could conceive of these designs!") and ikebana frogs. Pieces of art, but art that could be incorporated into ordinary life. Well, perhaps "special" life. And I hope someday to create a "special" plan here at Kamesei using such creations.
Note: Agnes' exhibition only goes through the 16th, so hurry!

昨日は信州を愛している外国人でその愛情をネットで発信している方を紹介しました。今日はもう一人の外国人を紹介したいと思っております。この戸倉上山田に住んでいる、ハンガリー生まれのアーグネス・フスさん。陶芸家のアーグネスさんは今日、顔を出してくれました。明日(12月10日・木）から来週の水曜日(12月16日)まで、長野市の等級デパートで展示会をするそうです。「くるくると、まいてつくるうずまきの器」という陶芸展です。アーグネスさんは東欧州の陶芸伝統と、信州に生活している刺激を合わせて、独自な陶芸をなされている。
実は、私はアーグネスさんの作品が大好きで、亀清旅館の女風呂の湯口の上のオブジェを造って頂けるようにお願いしています。年明けで出来上がるそうです。楽しみにしています！

Yesterday I posted info on several foreigners sharing their love of Nagano on the web. Today I want to introduce another foreigner living in Nagano, ceramic artist Agnes Husz. Agnes-san stopped by today with information on her upcoming exhibition at the venerable Tokyu Department store in Nagano City. The show starts tomorrow (10-Dec, Thurs) and runs through next Wednesday (16-Dec). Her artistry, shaped by Eastern Europe tradition as well as her living here in Nagano, primarily involves ribbons of clay wrapped into creative designs.
Actually, I am a big fan of Agnes-san's works. We have asked her to make an "objet" to go on top of the onsen spout in our ladies bath. Agnes said she'd have it ready around the first of the new year. I can't wait!

私が亀清旅館の仕事やインバウンド(海外旅行者誘客）と戸倉上山田温泉の町興しでいつも精一杯ですが、一人の友人がもっと幅広い活動をしています。今はその方が隣の隣の屋代駅の中のギャラリーでチベット展を開いています。12月11日まで、チベットの写真や子供達の絵を展示しています。北京の五輪は終わったのでチベットが大分忘れられかけですが、そこの苦しんでいる民族の応援は続くべきではないかと思います。この展示会について、何か質問があれば、どうぞ、ご連絡をください。

I have been so caught up in my work here at Kamesei as well as with Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's civic improvement and attracting guests from overseas to Nagano, that I tend to lose track of world around me. One of my buddies is involved in various activities, and right now he is holding an exhibition on Tibet at Yashiro Station, two stops down the line from Togura Station. The show features photographs of typicl Tibet street scenes as well as drawings by Tibetan school kids. It will continue through December 11th. Tibet has fallen out of the spotlight with the end of the Beijing Olympics, but the need to push for Tibet's freedom continues. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

戸倉上山田温泉の町興し行事、料理コンテストは今日、行われました。｢競争｣のきかけで、それぞれの旅館の板長達が頑張って工夫したお料理を出して、お互いに交流し情報交換も出来、そしてＭｉｃｈｅｌｉｎ二星を取っている谷先生の良いアドバイスも聞けました。地元のテレビも取材してくれて、温泉のいい宣伝にもなりました。
次は、我々旅館若旦那たちの布団引きコンテストをしたいね。:)

One of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's civic improvement events took place today -- a cooking contest. The chefs of the various inns worked hard to come up with creative dishes using local ingredients, and we had 2-star Michelin chef, Tani-sensei from Tokyo, judge the results. Nothing like a little competition to get the creative juices going, and get the chefs talking with each other. We also got good coverage from the local tv stations to boot!
Next up: Futon flipping contest with us junior innkeepers! (Just joking!)

私はみどりのサポート隊員になりました。

皆、｢何それ？｣と思われているかもしれないので説明させていただきます。

今日のお昼は戸倉温泉のはた屋さんでおしぼりうどんを食べに行きました。そこで、｢町をきれいに、地球を大切に」と言うテーマで戸倉温泉でこんな事をする会が出来ている：

＊散歩の時など　ごみ拾いをする。
＊家の周りに草花を植える。
＊近所に草花を植える時に手伝う。
＊植えた草花の手入れや水やり。
＊近所の掲示板の管理。
＊里山の草木の手入れ。
＊使用済み割り箸を集めて、灰焼き。

私は平日の朝に我が僕達の通学の班長の所まで一緒に歩く時に、いつもほうきを持ってごみ拾いをしています。そして、亀清では、使用済みの割り箸は薪ストーブのたきつけとして使っています。聞いたら、｢じゃ、タイラーも隊員になれる｣と言ってくれました。隊員になったら、手作りバッヂを頂きました。

I am proud to announce that I have become a member of the Midori (=Green) Support Corps.

What the heck is that?

Well, allow me to explain. I went to lunch today to Hataya for some oshibori udon, and they gave me info on this new organization. The activities are as follows:

*When out walking, pick up garbage.
*Plant flowers around your own house.
*Help out with planting flowers in the neighborhood.
*Water and care for the plants you planted.
*Take care of the neighborhood community sign board.
*Plant trees on your local mountain.
*Collect used disposable chopsticks and turn them into ash for fertilizer.

Whenever I accompany our sons up the Hancho place on their walk to school in the morning, I always take along a broom and sweep up trash. And we re-use our chopsticks here at Kamesei by using them for kinlding for our wood burning stove. So the lady at Hataya said I qualified. By joining, I got one of these cool hand-made badges.

上山田の中で、一番綺麗な紅葉スポットは恐らく知識時です。お寺さんの茅葺屋根と周りのもみじの木はとっても良い合わせです。その俊によって、葉っぱの色は他所違います。今年はまあまあでした。今日はおフランスからのお客さんを連れて、りんご狩りのついでに見に行きました。車で亀清旅館・戸倉上山田温泉から約５分。

Here in Kamiyamada, our most famous spot for fall leaves is probably Chishiki-ji Temple. It's thatched roof provides a beautiful background to the leaves of the Japanese maple trees in its courtyard. The vibrancy of the autumn colors varies year to year. This year, unfortunately, the colors were just so-so.
Today I took a couple of guests from France to see the leaves. We stopped by an apple orchard on the way.
Chishiki-ji is 5 minutes by car from Kamesei Ryokan / Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen.
