上山田温泉夏祭りはだんだん近づいています。7月16日・17日に行います。寄付集めから獅子・お神輿の準備に切りかえっています。ちなみに、私は今年から獅子からお神輿から移ります。昨日はお神輿の準備で我々若連が集まりました。

歳を通って行く中で、それぞれの年齢は役を振り分ける。私の年齢では、温泉に4人しかいない。その4人でそれぞれの若連の役を決める訳です。早目にお神輿の世界も経験を付けなきゃいけないという事で、獅子から移りました。「お神輿の連中が怖いぞ」とあちらこちらから注意されている。昨日の作業後の懇親会でその怖さと少しふれました。「お前は最低10年間この温泉に住まないと、役が出来ないよ」とはっきり上の方に言われました。でも逆に正直って、そう言われて嬉しかったです。つまり、県外から来るか、海外から来るか差別なく、10年さえ住めばその権利を得れる訳。私は既に戸倉上山田温泉に5年半住んでいますので、4，5年先に役が回ってくる年になれば、その10年間の条件を足しているだろう。この祭り男は精一杯参加できるという事！

夕べは信州のプロバスケチーム「信州ブレイブワォリアーズ」のマネジャー達と打ち合わせしました。片貝さん達が亀清旅館に足を運んで頂いて、戸倉上山田温泉旅館組合とどんな取り組みが出来るか、色々と話し合いました。

最初のホーム試合が10月22日で、場所は亀清旅館・戸倉上山田温泉から約10分で歩いて行ける戸倉体育館で行う予定。ある意味で戸倉上山田温泉で生まれたプロバスケのチームは我々旅館がどんな様に協力が出来るかと言う計画段階です。

亀清旅館としてぜひ応援したいと思っておりますので、うまく行くように頑張ります。私は学生のころからずっとバスケをやっていましたので特にこのチームが成功して欲しい。

Katagai-san and the members of Nagano's new pro-basketball team's front office came to Kamesei yesterday to discuss ways for Togura Kamiyamada's ryokan association to cooperate with the Brave Warriors. We are excited our town will become the host city for the new hoops team, and are hoping to support the team in any way we can.

The Warriors' first home game will be this October 22nd at the Togura Gymnasium, a short 10 minute walk from Kamesei Ryokan and our onsen town. I myself have played my share of hoops over the years and am looking forward to interacting with the team.

戸倉上山田温泉旅館組合のメンバーと地元の湯上り美女連（日本舞踊）の美女さん達と温泉を朝早く出て、バスで東京の有楽町まで行きました。有楽町駅前に一日で戸倉上山田のパンフを配りました。おやきや杏製品の販売（おやきは人気だった!）、美女連の踊り、皆様に茸をプレゼントしたり、とにかく一生懸命この戸倉上山田温泉をＰＲしておきました。

偶に通る方で「あっ、テレビで見たよ！頑張って下さい!」と応援して頂いた方もいらっしゃいました。そして、外国人の方に英語で少しお話しして、町の英語のパンフを渡しました。その内の数人は既に長野に行った事があった。松本や山登りなど。やはり、長野県は文化や自然の財産で我々外国人に人気がある。

山登りで言えば、その好みがある様に見えた方に声をかけて、出来立てほやほやの戸倉上山田周辺のハイキング・サイクリングマップも渡しました。それは結構喜ばれました。（作成努力の価値があって、良かった!）

宿でお客様を受け身で待つだけじゃなくて、積極的に宣伝にお出かけするのも必要ですね。効果は少しでもあれば良い。

Several members of the Togura Kamiyamada Onsen Ryokan Association and I, along with our onsen's dance troupe, took a bus into Tokyo this morning. We spent the day handing out brochures in front of Yurakucho Station.

We also sold oyaki dumplings and apricot goods (the oyaki were a hit!), the dance troupe performed several times, and we handed out our local mushrooms. I'm not sure what all the busy Tokyo-ites passing by thought of our expedition from Nagano, but we sure passed out a lot of brochures.

Every once in a while, someone would stop and say, 'Oh, I saw you on TV. Good luck!' That was encouraging. And there were a handful of foreigners that seemed happy to get passed an English brochure. A few of them mentioned they had been to Nagano before for sightseeing in Matsumoto or mountain climbing. Nagano, with its cultural heritage and beautiful green mountains sure is popular with us foreigners.

Speaking of mountain climbing, a few passers-by looked like they were the active outdoorsy type. When their eyes lit up as I mentioned hiking, I was happy to give them our brand new hiking / cycling map. All the work that went in to it seems to be paying off.

Hopefully our publicity excursion to Tokyo will also pay off. It sure beats sitting on our butts and waiting for guests to show up.

戸倉上山田温泉の周辺の一番人気ホタルスポットは車で約20分の上田市下塩尻地区です。当地「蛍の里」のホタル祭りはこの23年度の6月18日～26日に開催するそうです。

そして、個々の千曲観光協会は特別でバスツアーを手配する予定です。6月24日（金）と25日（土）の二日間です。夜8時に出発して、一人700円です。25名様限定ですから、興味があれば早目にご連絡を。

とにかく、驚くほどの数；行けば幻い光になるでしょう。（ちなみに、私が驚いているのは、誰かが一匹一匹を数えているかい?700匹はどうやって数えるでしょう?だって、蛍があちらこちら飛んでいるでしょう?）

Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's closest Firefly watching spot is Ueda's Shimoshiojiri, approximately 20 minutes by car. The Hotaru no Sato (Firefly Village) there is holding a Firefly Festival from June 18th to the 26th this year.

And this year, our local tourism bureau is sponsoring a tour bus to go view the fireflies. It is scheduled for 2 days: Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th. Departure is 8pm and the cost is 700 yen / person. Seats are limited so if interested, please let us know asap so we can make a reservation.

By the way, the tourism bureau informs us of the following stats from Shimoshiojiri:

So you are pretty much guaranteed a fascinating light show. (What fascinates me is someone would actually count fireflies one by one. I mean, how could you count 700 of the little bugs? Aren't they flying all over the place?!)

皆様、父の日はどんな様に過ごしましたか?

戸倉上山田温泉では私達旅館青年部が千曲サイクリングクラブと連携して、自転車で千曲川サイクリング道路を通って坂城ばら祭りへ、ファミリーサイクリングしてきました。

戸倉上山田にこんな素敵な川沿いサイクリング道路があるという事は私達の温泉にとって貴重な宝物だと思います。他の温泉地にこういうサイクリングに最適な財産はあるでしょうか?

我々旅館青年部にもこの財産を分かって欲しかった。自ら体験すれば、今度は宿のお客さん達に紹介が出来ると思います。つい最近に戸倉上山田温泉の周辺のサイクリング・ハイキングマップが出来上がりましたので、是非に活躍させたいです。

今回は千曲サイクリングクラブの方々が付き合って頂いて、嬉しかったです。良い交流が出来ました。

そして、今回のメンバーの中で子供連れもいました。父の日での良い親子交流でした。（私にとっては一番嬉しい父の日のプレゼントです。）

なおかつ、参加者の皆様から義援金を集まりました。「がんばれ!山田町」山田町復興支援の会に渡しておきます。

旅館青年部と自転車の触れ合い、サイクリングクラブとの交流、父・子供のお時間、東北の支援。それぞれは小さい事です。小さいけど、うんと大事。

How was everyone's Father's Day?

Here in Togura-Kamiyamada, the other junior ryokan association members and I joined forces with the Chikuma Cycling Club for a family fun ride along the Chikuma River bicycling path.

Our onsen town is fortunate to have a such an enjoyable river-side cycling path. How many other onsen districts are so lucky? By having the other ryokan guys experience cycling on the path, I hope they will now tell their guests about it. Just last week, our town's first Cycling / Hiking map was released. Hopefully it will be a tool to get more people to enjoy cycling in the area.

It was also great to hang out with the Chikuma Cycling Club members for the day. I appreciate their help guiding our ride.

And several of the participants brought their kids, making it a fun father & kids time. Perfect for Father's Day.

Finally, everyone made a donation to the Tohoku relief effort. We will donate the money to the Yamada (Iwate Pref.) Support Network.

Getting the ryokan guys in the saddle and enjoying the bicycle path, getting to know the Chikuma Cycling Club members better, having fun with our kids for Father's Day, and collecting money for Tohoku -- all in all a great day.

日曜日に戸倉上山田温泉旅館組合の婦人部はチャリティーバザーを行いました。お皿からカラオケまで、さまざまな品物。全額が旧上山田町のそのころの姉妹都市、岩手県山田町へ行きます。山田町は3.11の地震と津波から被災されましたの上山田は直接で山田町へ義捐金を送っています。このバザーでお陰様で約８万円の義捐金を集めました。

亀清旅館の女将社長を含めて、婦人部の皆様、ご苦労様でした。そして、私と一緒に準備と片付けを手伝った旅館青年部の皆もご苦労！

戸倉上山田温泉の東北応援チャリティーイベントはまだまだ続きます。６月１９日(日）に千曲サイクリングクラブと連携して、ファミリーサイクリングを予定しています。１０：３０に上山田温泉のカラコロ足湯で集合して、千曲川沿いのサイクリング道路で隣の坂城のばら祭りまで行くというイベントです。父の日に合わせて、ご家族での自転車お出かけはいかがでしょうか？問い合わせは亀清旅館へどうぞ。

Yesterday, the proprietresses from our onsen town, Togura Kamiyamada, held a charity bazaar and raised approx. US$600 for tsunami-stricken Yamada town in Iwate Prefecture. The junior ryokan association members and I helped out with set-up and take-down, and were glad to assist with this worthy cause.

More Togura Kamiyamada Onsen charity events are still to come. Next up is a Charity Bicycle Ride next Sunday 19-June in conjunction with the Chikuma Cycling Club. We meet at 10:30am at the Kara-Koro footbath, and will ride along the Chikuma River Cycling Road to Sakaki to enjoy the Rose Festival there. 英字新聞「ジャパンタイムズ」に目が覚めされた記事は先日に出た。日本の「故郷」についてでしたが、一言：
「日本人は地方から東海へ引っ越ししていて、地方は空っぽになっている。
地方に人はもういない。
未来もない。」

地方にあるこの戸倉上山田温泉の未来の為に人生をかけている私には、耳が痛い発言。

戸倉上山田温泉は旧上山田町、戸倉町と隣の更埴市と合併して、「千曲市」となりました。

千曲市の代表のイベントは森「あんずの里」のあんずまつり。今年は3.11の自粛で中止になった。

その後、3年に一度に行う「雨宮神事」も中止。建て前では3.11の自粛だったが、本音は実行したい人がいなかったのではないか。皆は面倒くさい事が嫌がる訳。

そして、千曲市の中の更埴側での主の夏祭りも今年からやらなくなった。3.11と完全に関係ない。毎年に参加者が少なくなっていて、結局大半は義理でやらされていただけ。

夏祭りをなくする町こそ、未来はありますか?

それと比較して、上山田温泉の夏祭りは例年通り行う事は決定です。今日は他の旅館の方と寄付集めで長野市を回りました。若連も、祭典も、皆は一生懸命。

寄付はこの不景気の中で集めれるかどうか非常に不安にかかわらず、皆は一生懸命。

市役所からの支援は毎年カット!カット!で少なくなってきているにかかわらず、皆は一生懸命。

（市の「平等」病で、民間の祭りの支援金を減らしている訳。そこは更埴の祭りがつぶされた理由の一つではないかと。市は全てを平等にさせながら、この町の文化・命を殺しているようだ。行政はその為なの?）

上山田温泉夏祭りに触っている人達の中にはぶうぶう文句を言っている人もいるよ。でも文句を言う人達の頭の隅に「祭りが消えると町の未来も消える」と言う理解はあると思う。それで皆は必死です。自分たちの命がかかっているから。

考え過ぎ?

今日の寄付集めで回っている時に、我々旅館の若旦那達がなんだかんだ町の企業といいコミュニケーションを取れました。そういう絆が町のライフラインです。完全に祭りのお蔭です。

そういう風に、今日、一日寄付集めをやってきて感じました。

ちなみに、上山田温泉の今年の夏祭りは7月16日～17日です。千曲川の花火大会は8月7日（日）です。詳しくは観光協会のＨＰへ。

There was a recent article in the Japan Times with a very disturbing (to me) observation:

"The movement of youth from country to city has left many rural communities anorexic. The population isn't there anymore, nor is the future. . ."

For me, someone who is dedicating his life for the future of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, the thought that this town has no future is very disturbing indeed.

One worrisome recent trend is the number of local festivals that have been canceled lately. Some of the cancelations are related to post-3.11 depression. But the bigger reason is people just don't want to spend the time and energy in running the events.

In contrast, Kamiyamada's Summer Festival preparations are going ahead as per schedule. Today I went around Nagano City with a couple of other ryokan guys collecting donations. Everyone is going full-bore for the festival. Of course, people have their issues with how much work is involved. But I think everyone knows if we let this festival slide into oblivion, there lies our town's future, too.

Anyways, this year's dates for our 2 big festivals:

Kamiyamada Onsen Summer Festival July 16th and 17th
Chikuma River Fireworks Display August 7th.

戸倉上山田温泉にある西沢貯金箱館の８月３１日までの展示会はキャラクターの貯金箱です。館内を見させて頂きましたが、キャラクターの展示会として面白いし、全部が貯金箱だという事を考えれば、凄いです。

とにかく、西沢さんは本当にこれだけのキャラクターをよく揃いました。私にはなじみやすいスター・ウォーズやスタートレックとか、子供のころに見ていたアニメのフリントストーンズやスピーディー・ゴンザレス。日本のンキャラクターももちろんたっぷり展示してあります：明治時代からの土びなのからバルトン星人まで。

大人も子供大喜び。

なおかつ、全部は貯金箱ですよ。驚きます。

一個一個は説明がちゃんとついていますし、展示がうんと上手です。この夏は是非、西沢貯金箱館を楽しんでください。

The Nishizawa Piggy Bank Museum here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is displaying a wide assortment of popular character-based piggy banks now through August 31st. I had the chance to view the display, and was pleasantly surprised at how fun it was to see all the characters.

Some of the piggy banks were of characters near and dear to my heart, like Star Wars and Star Trek as well as some cartoon characters I enjoyed as a kid: the Flintstones, Speedy Gonzales and so many more. Then there are the hundreds of Japanese-based characters. Everything from clay piggy banks dating back to the Meiji era to ones of space alien Baruton, Ultraman's traditional foe. And that's not to mention all of the 'cute' characters Japan is so famous for.

And each one is labeled with detailed information and displayed in a very professional style.

Just enjoying the characters as characters is fun, but it's amazing to think that each and every one is a piggy bank.

This summer, come and enjoy Japan's fascination with characters through piggy banks!

去年の暮れに千曲市が数人の旅行記者を呼びました。その一人が中尾隆之さんでした。ＪＲで働いている知り合いがそのころの「交通新聞」を持って来てくれて、中尾さんの書いた記事が載っていました：「千曲川沿いの温泉街」。

こうやって戸倉上山田温泉のプロのライターさん達に評価されて、嬉しいです。中尾さんは温泉街の上の荒砥城からの眺めが一番の印象だったようです。「それらの町々にくねくね長い帯のように伸びる千曲川」の姿を見たら、「千曲」と言う市名がやっと納得したと言います。

文章の中でもう１つなイメージは私にとって印象的：「柳並木の温泉中央通りを歩く。足湯や飲泉所…」　正直って、私はこの柳並木をあまり認識していなかった。外から来たくせに、当たり前様に思っていたかもしれない。でも、中尾さんの文書をを呼んで、中央通りの柳の木は千曲川と周辺の山々と並べて、戸倉上山田温泉の全体の「自然」の重要な部分である。中尾さんの記事のお蔭で、自分の温泉街を見直しました。

Last fall, Chikuma City invited a group of travel writers to our town. One of them, Nakao-san, had an article published in a train industry newspaper. A buddy of mine who works for JR recently gave me a copy of the article.

It was encouraging to see a feature article on Togura Kamiyamada Onsen by an industry writer . The article was titled "An Onsen Town Along the Chikuma River". According to the article, Nakao-san was particularly impressed by the birdseye view from Arato-jo, the mountain fortress behind the town, of the town and the meandering Chikuma River that curves back and forth down the middle. 'Chikuma' means 'a thousand bends', and seeing the view from the castle, Nakano-san finally understood where the name comes from.

For me, another image from his article stands out. He talks about going for a walk along Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's main street and enjoying the willow trees that line both sides.

I have to admit, I've been overlooking just how nice those willow trees are. Along with the river and the surrounding mountains, the willow trees provide a strong presence of natural beauty to our town.

４月２１日にオープンした上田市のアリオというショッピングモールに上山田お神楽保存会の皆さんと一緒に行きました。「千曲市フェアー」という事で、我々お神楽や温泉の日本舞踊「湯あがれ美女連」、おかみの会などが呼ばれました。今日は上山田温泉の仮設足湯も設置されて、賑やかでした。

上田のアリオは「アリオ」として小さいけど、長野県の中で一番大きいショッピングモールとなります。今まで長野になかった店も出来たいい面と、周辺が渋滞になり、駅前の元の店が駐車場になるさびしい面もある。また、アメリカと日本のショッピングモールの違いで色々とカルチャショックを受けました。

まあ、あまり深く考えないで、逆に買い物にお越しになる皆様は漬かれてきたら、是非、亀清旅館お風呂でリラックスしてください。車で約３０分ですので、宜しくお願いします。
