この千曲市の代表味噌倉、高村商店に寄ってみたら、今年の仕込んだ味噌がちょうど出始まりました。その記念として、この地域の自慢の姨捨「田毎の月」棚田のお米を使った「棚田」味噌が登場しました。

期間と数量限定ですが、この時期にしか味えないお味噌。

Here in Chikuma City, the biggest miso maker is Takamura Shoten. I stopped by with some guests and was delighted to here that this year's batch of miso was starting to come available. To mark the occasion, they prepared a special batch using rice from the famous moon-reflecting Obasute terraced rice fields (= "tanada"). It is for sale now in "Tanada" label packages.

"Tanada" miso is only available for a limited time and in very limited amounts. But for a taste of this year's new miso, this is a great opportunity.

今年の皮閉科神社秋祭り。息子たちは子供相撲をまたチャレンジしました。私は今年、お相撲を遠慮しました。代わりに、一日をかけて、上山田神楽保存会の皆と町を,笛吹きながら回りました。

日本の地方だからこそ、こういうローカルの祭りを楽しめます。

Kids sumo wrestling at this year's Habeshina Shrine Autumn Festival. That's our Kenny taking on a challenger. I didn't participate in the sumo this year. Instead, I joined the Okagura lion dance procession around town playing the flute.

Every year around the 4th weekend of September, Kamiyamada's local Habeshina Shrine holds this quaint little festival. It represents the best of life here in the Japanese countryside.

千曲川の周辺の田んぼは冬の間に玉葱を育つように使われています。地元の農家の方々は親切に育ち方を教えてくれます。以前はうちの子供達を連れて、参加させて頂いた事があります。玉ねぎはスーパーからじゃなくて、土からだよという良い勉強になりました。自然の力と人間の苦労の影だよと。今年はまた体験が出来ますので、お勧めです。

ぶどう狩り・りんご狩り

9月はぶどう狩り、10月～11月はリンゴ狩り　温泉街から車で約5分。美味しい畑を喜んで紹介しますのでおまかせてください。

戸倉上山田温泉から車で十数分に開眼寺と言うお寺さんがあります。歴史的な本堂の隣にモダン的な座禅堂があります。そこの住職、柴田さんは毎朝５時から座禅をやっていますので、「いつでも良いからお客さんを連れてきて頂戴」と仰って頂いております。

この夏はまたインターネットで「若旦那と朝五時座禅プラン」を出していますが、正直って、あまり売れていません。ハードルが高すぎるかな?朝五時は確かに早いです。しかし、早いからこそ、周りが静かで座禅には最適です。（この写真は朝５時座禅の時に撮りました。その静かさを表現する。）

先日はやっと朝五時座禅プランでお客様が見えました。若いお姉さん一人でした。「頑張ってはるやな」と思いました。

せっかくでしたから、前の日の夜に他のお客様にも声をかけて誘ってみました。ほとんど皆が「無理だ!」と断りましたが、唯一「良いね」と言ってくれたのは、誕生日のお祝いでお越しになった又若いお姉さんたちの小グループでした。

柴田住職がきっと驚きました。その朝にイキイキなお姉さん達６人が座禅でいきなり見えて。

私もそうだったけど、柴田さんもきっとそうだと思いますが、お姉さん達からパワーをもらったような気がします。

Ten-plus minutes by car from our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada is a historical temple called Kaigen-ji. The name means 'Open Your Eyes', and is unique for, among many things, a very modern zazen meditation hall.

The monk, Shibata-san, practices zazen meditation every morning at 5am, and has given me a standing invitation to bring guests and attend the meditation. So accordingly, I have put a "5am Zazen with the Proprietor" plan on our website.

To be honest, the plan hardly ever sells. Apparently 5am is just too early. But because it is early, everywhere around is at its quietest -- perfect for meditation. (This picture is one I took that morning that seemed to capture the feeling of quietness.)

The other day, we finally had a guest come using this plan -- a nice yound lady travelling by herself. The evening before, I invited other guests but almost everyone said, "No way!" The only guests who took us up on the offer was a group of young ladies who were spending the night at our inn as a birthday celebration.

I bet Shibata-san was surprised when 6 young ladies all of the sudden entered his hall and join him for meditation that morning. For me and I am sure for Shibata-san, too, it was great having the ladies join the meditation and share their energy with us.

47都道府県の中の県民で一番愛されている県歌は長野県の「信濃の国」だそうです。県民の全員が歌詞を覚えていると言われている。

私もここに生まれていないのに、大分覚えた。

当たり前。だって、どの祭りでも、「信濃の国」の音楽が流れる。上山田の盆踊りでエンドレスに流れるように感じる。独特な踊りもあって、印象が深いです。ポップコーン売りから少し休んで、踊りを見に行った。そうしたら、うちの3人子供がちょうど踊っていた。4歳の美咲ちゃんでも踊れるなら、誰も出来る。来年は是非、ご一緒に!

Every one of Japan's 47 prefectures presumably has an official prefectural song. Nagano's is called "Shinano no Kuni", or 'The land of Shinano' (the Edo-era name for Nagano). Of all the official songs, Nagano's is one of the most loved by its citizens. Practically all Nagano-ites has the lyrics memorized.

Even me, who wasn't born here. I've learned a good portion of the lyrics through osmosis, and through the constant bombardment of the song at Bon-Odori and other various festivals. For the dances, it comes with some pretty funky choreographed elbow movements. Pictured are our 3 kids doin' the Shinano no Kuni. Next year's Bon-Odori, come and join us!

戸倉上山田の商工会は毎年にお盆の三日間で温泉の本通りを歩行者天国にして、盆踊り大会を開催します。地元の皆様旅館の浴衣を着ている宿泊者が一緒に踊ったり、そして日によって備後安い代わり大会もある。

我々商工会青年部が屋台をやります。私は昨日、玩具係りでした。今日ははポップコーン係りです。輪投げ、金魚すくい、かき氷、焼き鳥、色々あります。子供達が大喜び。(生ビールもあるから大人も大喜び！）

皆様はお盆はどう過ごしていますか?一緒に踊りませんか?

戸倉上山田温泉から５ｋｍに隣の坂城町でびんぐし公園があります。長～い滑り台があって、私どもの家族に人気公園です。

びんぐしは湯さん館と言う銭湯で知られていますが、私達はお風呂がいつも上山田温泉(ごめん、倍安ビアアスがあって…）なので、その滑り台がうちの目的である。それと、公園の隣のお店でうどんが美味しい。坂城町と言えば、鼠大根と言う辛味大根が取れる産地です。その辛味大根を使って、おしぼりうどんが代表のお料理です。

今日は子供達と一緒に自転車(片道30分）で行って、滑り台で遊んだり、おうどんを食べたり、楽しい夏のお昼のおでかくしました。

イベントを発案すると、人が集まるかどうかドキドキしちゃう。

昨日はこの8月で実施している戸倉上山田温泉の射的大会の目玉イベントを開催しました。参加者が我々若旦那と射的で勝負して、勝てば3組は宿泊券が抽選で当たる!と言うイベント。

温泉に射的屋さんは4件がありますので、普段は夜営業です。このイベントの為に特別でお昼でやって頂けるように交渉しました。そして、我々旅館青年部が当番で立ち会うという事。

スタートは4時でした。旅館青年部の当番の皆がちゃんと出て来てくれて、地元の新聞2社とラジオ局、ケーブルネットテレビの方々もお越しになってくれました。

が、約束してくれた射的屋さん4件のうちの2県は結局出てくれなくて、最初はお客さんが全く0でした。「3組分の宿泊券を準備しているから、せめて3人が来てくれないと困る…」と心配しました。

しかし、しばらくしたら早くチェックインして、夕食前に散歩したお客様は大勢で来てくれました。手が回らないぐらいに賑やかになりました。新聞とテレビの方々「良い絵になりました」と言ってくれました。ラジオ局の方も良い音を取れたようです。

皆が「お昼からの射的はまた継続したい」と仰って頂きました。

ほっとしました。

これで戸倉上山田温泉が一歩進んだのではないかと思います。子供連れのご家族も楽しめる「射的温泉」！

今年の戸倉温泉「千曲川花火大会」は全国ニュースになりました。

この小さな町が3.11以降の自粛ムードをブッ飛ばして、花火大会を盛大に開催したからじゃなくて、

直前に大雨が降ったからじゃなくて、

小さい町の割に大々的にやって、1万発もだして、千曲川の上と音を反射する城山と五里ヶ峰の間と言う最適な場面で、目の前で見れて、最後は万葉橋のナイアガラと言う感動的な花火だからじゃなくて、

じゃ、何でニュースになったでしょうか?

その大雨のせいで、千曲川の水の流れが溢れて、花火師の11人は帰られなくなったからです。夜中、消防のクレーンで助けられた。けがはなくて、良かった。花火大会も雨で中止にならずに、それも良かった。

でも、一つは分かった:戸倉の花火の皆さんに騙されていた。「５０何間、雨で中止になったのは1回もない」と言われました。今回はスターツの時に大雨だったにかかわらず、中止にならなかった。という事は、という事は、今まで雨で中止にならなかった理由は、雨が降っても中止しないからだ。なるほど！

でも、スタートの時は雨が降ったが、その後止んで、私の布団引きの作業が終わってから花火を見に行った頃は既に星空になっていました。星と花火、素敵な合わせでした。

Togura's Chikuma River Fireworks Display last night made the national news.

Not because our small town was able to put on the show despite other festival being cut back in the aftermath of the 3.11 disaster.

And not because the show went on after a heavy squall at the start.

And also not because it's an amazingly extensive show with 10,000 blasts of fireworks, surprisingly big for such a small town; not to mention the picturesque setting over the Chikuma River situated in a narrow valley with mountains that reverbrate the sound.

So, why was our show in the news?

Because 11 of the pyrotechnicians got caught on their island by raising river waters. The water volume was swollen by rainfall upriver, and the 11 men had to be rescued by a fire department crane. Fortunately, none of the 11 were hurt. And also fortunately, the show was not interrupted by the rain.

I did learn one thing though. Those Togura fireworks guys duped me. They had said the show had never been canceled by rain in 50+ years. Last night, the show went on despite rain at the start. So when they say it had never been canceled, they mean that even though it rained, they never canceled. Ah hah!

But I, for one, was glad the show took place. By the time I finished flipping futons at our inn and went down to the river, the rain had stopped and the stars were out. So I got to enjoy a fireworks show with twinkling stars, too.

All the month of August here at Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, we are running a shateki contest in support of the 3.11 disaster relief effort. The main event for this charity deal will take place on Wednesday August 10th -- a charity contest where contestants take on us ryokan junior association members. The 4 shateki stands in town have agreed to open in the afternoon (normally they only operate at night). And if the contestants beat us ryokan guys, they are eligible to win a free night's stay at one of the ryokans. So if you are in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen on 10-August, come and try your hand at the contest!

When: Wednesday August 8th from 4pm to 6pm.
Where: Any of the 4 shateki stands in the onsen.
What: Shateki contest where contestants take on one of us members of the ryokan junior association.
How Much: 500 yen per try.
Why: A chance win a free night's stay at one of the ryokans. (The ryokan association and us junior ryokan guys are offering 3 20,000 yen ryokan passes.)
Purpose: Of the shateki tickets sold at the ryokans, 200 yen will be donated to Yamada Town in Iwate Prefecture to help with the tsunami relief effort there.
