この頃、毎年のこの時期に私ども戸倉上山田旅館青年部が上山田温泉の本通りにイルミネーションを付けます。今はその作業です。

今年は新しいワイヤーを設置して、イルミネーションをさらに伸ばします。この冬のお客様及び地元の皆様の為に温泉街を賑やか、輝かに!

In recent years, the members of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's junior ryokan association (me included) have been putting up lights along Kamiyamada Onsen's main street for the winter. These days we've been busy putting up the lights for this winter.

In fact, we are adding more wire to double the length of the winter lights down the main street. It's a simple gesture of welcome to our town's guests this winter, as well as brightens the night up for everyone living here, too!

戸倉上山田温泉に長野市方面から県道７７号で入ると、道が上山田温泉本通りの入口で狭くなっている現状です。道広くする工事はやっと始まりました。我が温泉の顔がこれで新しくなる!

道の整備にもなるけど、ちょっとした公園も出来るようです。せっかく温泉の入り口なので、何かモニュメントが出来たらいいなと思っています。「戸倉上山田へようこそ!」とか、「戸倉上山田に来たぞ!」のような印象が出来る物。

去年、島根県の玉造温泉に行きました。温泉街の入口に素晴らしいモニュメントが立ていていました。私にはその印象が強く残っています。

上山田温泉は「亀が教えた」という由来がありますが、その様なオブジェなら格好良いと思いますが、どうでしょうか?

Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's main road coming from Nagano City is finally getting its narrow spot widened. As part of the construction, a small park will be created. As the park will be situated at the entrance to our onsen, I hope we can make some sort of welcoming monument that gives guests a warm impression upon arriving at our onsen town.

Last year I visited Tamatsukuri Onsen in Shimane Prefecture. The entrance to their onsen is marked by a massive stone 'tama' (ball). Their monument left a lasting impression on me.

Perhaps since Kamiyamada's hot spring was supposedly found by turtles, we can make a turtle monument based on that legend. What do you think?

文化の日という事で、上山田では文化祭が開催されます。例年通り、私達上山田神楽保存会の皆が獅子舞を文化会館の舞台で発表しました。地元の他の踊りなどのグループも発表しました。その中で、冠着太鼓の演奏も。子供達と一緒に見たけど、太鼓を生で聞くとやはり格好良い。4歳の美咲ちゃんが「体の中に入っちゃう」と感動しました。

文化会館の外で農協や商工会青年部などで物販があった。炭焼き立て秋刀魚が最高に美味しかった。

お神楽もそうですけど、他のグループもそうでしょう:　普段の活動も良いけどこうやって年に一度舞台で発表するのはうれしいよね。

With November 3rd being Culture Day and a national holiday in Japan, Kamiyamada holds a Culture Festival every year in the Culture Center. The Kagura shi-shi lion dance troupe I belong to participates every year. Along with other local groups, we perform on the main stage in the Center. This year, our local taiko group also performed. Our kids and I watched from the audience. Taiko is so cool to watch live. Little 4-year old Misaki said it felt like the taiko were playing inside her.

Outside the Center, local farm groups and the Chamber of Commerce Junior Association set up booths and were selling different food and goods. The charcoal-grilled 'sanma' (saury) was superb!

I don't know how it is for the other groups, but for us in the lion dance troupe, it's always exciting to perform on the big stage like this every year for the Culture Fest.

戸倉上山田温泉はこの冬に忘新年会のキャンペーンを実施します。亀清旅館を込めて、全ての宿がお越しになるお客様に抽選権を提供します。宿泊券から東北のお酒、東北の旅行プレゼントまで当たる事が出来ます。

このキャンペーンの宣伝の為に、旅館の皆さんがいくつかの班に分けて、キャラバンしました。2日に亀清の若女将が他の宿の方と佐久市・小諸市方面を回りました。戸倉上山田の皆が一生懸命!

日本プロバスケの新しいチーム、信州Ｂｒａｖｅ　Ｗａｒｒｉｏｒｓの初ホームゲーム。場所は何と戸倉体育館。我が亀清旅館からちゃりんこで5分。身長２ｍの私よりでかいプロ選手の試合がこんなに近くて見れて、最高!

子供と達と友人を連れて、さっそく行きました。久しぶりにバスケの試合を見る事。応援しすぎて、喉痛くしちゃった。（我々アメ人の応援と個々の皆のがかなり違っていて、吃驚しました。まあ、私の方が本番かなと勝手に思っていて、とにかく一生懸命応援した!）

応援したお蔭（?）で、Ｂｒａｖｅ　Ｗａｒｒｉｏｒｓが勝ちました。次のホーム試合＠戸倉が12月3日・4日です。楽しみだ!

Pro Basketball has come to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. The new Basketball-Japan Leauge "Shinshu Brave Warriors" had their first home game right here in our onsen town. Togura Gymnasium is a quick 5 minute bike ride from Kamesei Ryokan.

The kids and a buddy of mine rode our bikes down and cheered on the home team. It was so great to be able to watch these huge pro players (some were even taller than me -- and I'm 6'7" tall!) muscling there way through the game. There were more than a few viscious slam dunks -- and we took it all in from basically courtside seats. Awesome!

I cheared so much my throat hurt for 2 straight days. It soon became painfully apparent that cheering at hoops games in America is very different from in Japan. But I figured, basketball is from the States, I'm from the States, I've been to my share of hoop games in the States, heck, I've even played in my share of games in the States, so my cheering must be right and everyone else's wrong. So I kept cheering on like I would back at home. But then it hit me -- at the "Hey" song, I was the only one to pump my fist and shout "Hey!". Come on people, there's only one word to the song so it's not hard to learn the lyrics!

Anyways, perhaps in part due to my cheering, the home team won. Congratulations, Brave Warriors!

Next home game at Togura is December 3rd and 4th. Can't wait!

旅館青年部の「温泉塾」勉強会＠上山田温泉株式会社の後半は今度、温泉資料館見学。

館長の滝沢先生がまた親切に案内して頂いて、戸倉上山田の位地、歴史、温泉の背景、その歴史を作った人達、色々と紹介・説明してくれました。

お陰様でその歴史が生きてくるし、私達旅館経営者としてその歴史の次のページを作っている事、良く分かりました。

実は、その説明を聞いたのは私の2回目でした。内容があまりにも奥深いからすべてを把握する為に何度も聞かないと駄目です。今回は大変お世話になりました。

As a continuation of the Onsen Jook x Kamiyamada Onsen Company study session, we next took a tour of the Onsen History Museum.

The curator, Takizawa-san, kindly explained about our onsen town's location and geology, the history behind the onsen and about the people who made that history. He really made the story come alive. And he made us innkeepers realize that we are writing the next page of that history.

この2年間、私がこの戸倉上山田温泉旅館組合青年部の部長としての計画で月1回のペースで勉強会・地域連携を開く「温泉塾」で、今回は上山田温泉株式会社にお世話になって、上山田温泉の源泉巡りしました。

上山田温泉株式会社は源泉が18個を持っている。その内の3戸は休止。深さは３００～６００ｍ。源泉の井戸の穴からお湯が浮いてきて、２０～１００ｍの深さでパンプでそのお湯を引っ張り出す。
と言う制度を温泉会社の宮本さんが親切に教えてくれました。パンプのタイプ、どうやって温泉を温泉でブレンドして温度調整するかとか、色々説明して頂きました。

私達温泉にゃどの経営者としてその「温泉」が「命」だと言ってもおかしくないので、その奥深い中で少しでも把握して、非常に良かった。

During my 2 year tenure as Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's Ryokan Junior Association top, I am having our members get together for a monthly study session. This time was to have the local onsen company take us around to our town's onsen wells.

Miyamoto-san from the onsen company kindly explained about how the 18 onsen wells work with their varying depths of 300 to 600 meters and the onsen water rising up to within 20 meters of the surface, from where it is pumped up and distributed to all of us onsen ryokans.

The onsen water is vital to our business, so it was very useful to get to know a bit about how the system works.

今年のハロウィンin戸倉上山田温泉は盛大に終わりました。スポンサーした千曲国際交流協会への私の手紙:

ハロウィーンにご協力いただいた皆様、

毎度です。ハロウィン実行委員長のタイラーです。日曜日のイベントはご苦労様でし
た。

２１７人の子ども達、１０５人の大人たちの笑顔があって、大成功でした。有難うご
ざいました。
事務局の準備は相変わらず素晴らしかったです。そして当日の手伝いをされた小林会
長さん以下役員、
会員の皆さん、ＭＣをして頂いた寺澤さん、坂本さん、お化け屋敷を作ったＢｅｎさん、ＡＬＴの皆さんなど、
大勢の皆様のお蔭で楽しいイベントが出来ました。

そして協力金を下さった戸上旅館組合、戸上商工会、千曲市観光協会にも、かぼちゃ
を安く提供して下さった花見さんにも、
お化け屋敷の場所を無料で提供して頂いた有田屋さんにも、りんごをただで提供して
頂いたクラウン農園にも、
Ｔｒｉｃｋ－ｏｒ－Ｔｒｅａｔのお菓子を提供して頂いた旅館やお店52軒にも本当に
感謝しております。

細かい反省は色々あると思います。反省会を開きますので、
気付いたことを是非教えて頂けるようにお願い致します。どんどん改善していきたいと思っております。

「参加費を取った方が良いのではないか」と私の耳に痛い声がすでにあった様ですが、上記の様に、組合・商工会・協会や農家、
お店の協力があった上で参加費を取るのはどうかと思います。
私はこれで5年間実行委員長として務めさせて頂きました。本当は去年から次の人に
バトンタッチをしたかったです。
代わってくれる人がいればいつでも良いです。ただし、私が実行委員長をやる限りは
「参加費０で」との条件にさせて頂きますので
その点はどうぞご承知下さい。

子供達の笑顔はＰｒｉｃｅｌｅｓｓだと思っております。

今年のハロウィンin戸倉上山田温泉の為に一つ新しく企画した。毎年は近くの松代の農家さん花見（けんみ）さんがかぼちゃを育ってくれて、我々千曲国際交流協会のスタッフが取りに行く。今年は希望した参加者を連れて行きました。

15日に三家族の子供達を連れて、花見さんのかぼちゃ畑に行きました。子供達はでかくてオレンジ色のかぼちゃを畑で見て、凄く楽しんだ。

来年は出来たら、もっともっと大々的にやりたいと思っています。アメリカで住んでいたころ、家族とよくかぼちゃ畑へ行って、かぼちゃを選んで、戻ってランタンを作って、ハロウィンに飾りました。その楽しみをここの子供達にもふれあって欲しい。

Back in the States, we often went out to a pumpkin patch to pick our own pumpkins to carve jack-o-lanterns for Halloween. This year, for Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's big Halloween event, instead of the staff going out to the Matsushiro field where the farmer, Kenmi-san grows pumpkins for us, I introduced the idea for the participants to go with us.

So on the 15th, 3 groups of families along with us staff from the Chikuma Int'l Relations Assoc. drove out to Kenmi-san's pumpkin patch. For most of the kids, it was their first time to see the huge orange pumpkins in the actual field. They had a blast.

Next year I hope we get even more participants to go with us to the pumpkin patch!

身長2ｍの私はこの町の一番大きい人じゃなくなっちゃました!プロバスケの選手達ＥｄｗａｒｄさんとＬｅｅさんが顔を出してくれて、やっとお会いできました。２ｍ以上のお二人はこの戸倉上山田温泉・千曲市の詳しくを知りたかったので、色々と説明しておきました。

Ｂｒａｖｅ　Ｗａｒｒｉｏｒｓの最初のホーム試合は10月22・23日＠戸倉体育館。　楽しみですね!

I am no longer the tallest guy in town. Edward and Lee, 2 of our town's new pro hoops team's players, are both taller than my 6'7"! They came to Kamesei Ryokan today to get an English explanation about Togura Kamiyamada Onsen and Chikuma City.

The Brave Warriors' first home game is October 22nd/23rd at the Togura Gymnasium. I can't wait!
