上山田温泉地区のどんど焼きは14日に行われた。お正月の飾りや、去年のダルマなどを千曲川沿いの公園で山にして、燃やすという毎年に行う行事。今年は珍しく大雪だった。それでも近所の皆が集まって、新年の挨拶したり、新年のお酒を飲んだり、隅で焼いた餅や川魚を食べたり、大人も子供達も、大盛り上がり。
地元の伝統、深く根付いた。大雪にも負けない。
Kamiyamada Onsen's Dondo-Yaki took place on January 14th. For this annual event, the spent New Years decorations and the dharma dolls from the previous year at brought down to the park along side the Chikuma River and are burned in a huge bonfire. This year's ceremony was a bit unusual in that it took place in a blizzard.
Despite the heavy snowfall, all the neighbors gathered, made official New Years greetings to each other, drank sake, ate Mochi and river fish grilled over coals from the bonfire,
Adults and children alike, we all enjoyed participating in the event.
Not even the snow storm could dampen our spirits for this important annual community gathering.

千曲市の経済部産業振興課が「千曲」をブランド化に一生懸命。市関係の商品100＋個を千曲ブランドとしてのPR.
ブランドを作るのは元々難しい事だが、ポイントがぼけている。
市内からの材料で市内で生産した商品なら分かるけど、
中には市からの材料が外で生産された商品(杏リキュール)や、
県外からの材料で市内で生産された商品(お味噌),
様々な商品。
何処が拘りか、見えない。
そんな品物は100個以上揃っても、そもそも数ではなくて中身で勝負すべきではないか？
それでも、千曲ブランドの商品を買いたいと思っても、全部を揃っているお店がない。
いまだに千曲市に今の流行り(必須？)道の駅がない。

という(訳が分からない)背景で、1月19日に千曲市の戸倉創造館で「千曲川地域ブランドフェア・道の駅大集合」が開催。

千曲ブランドって千曲市だけではなくて、今度は千曲側沿いの18市町村？
千曲市に道の駅がない癖に道の駅がここで集合？
「ブランドフェア」の内容自体は何か想像ができる？

ちなみに、同じ会場に次の週末にに千曲市の主催で「食文化祭」が行われるそうです。

お正月モードは大体に成人の日まで続きますよね。今年は１月１４日までとの事。２週間も！どれだけ日本酒が飲まれるか？ええ事や！

戸倉上山田温泉では、その中間のイベントは銀座通り商店街の餅つき大会。亀清旅館は今年、初めて餅つき大会を行ったけど銀座通りの商店の皆さんの餅のイベントは５，６年ぐらい続いています。今年は１月６日に行われた。商店街の甘露煮屋さん、饅頭屋さん、味噌倉、そして通りの住んでいる皆と深い付き合い。皆が集まって餅つきを通じて交流が出来て、嬉しい。

毎年、千曲サイクリングクラブの皆さんも応援で（出来立てのお餅を食べに）来てくれます。うちの子供たち含めて、近所の皆がもちつくの体験が出来る。そして、美味しい餅を食べる。

戸倉上山田温泉の重要なイベントの一つ。来年は是非、参加しに来てください。

New Years mode here in Japan seems to last until the Coming of Age national holiday. This year, that means Monday 14-Jan, resulting in 2 full weeks of merry-making and sake-drinking.

In our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada, one of the main events during that period is Ginza Dori's mochi-making party. We put on a mochi-pounding event here at Kamesei Ryokan this New Years, but the Ginza Dori shopping district people have been holding theirs for 5 or 6 years now. This year's took place on Sunday 06-Jan.

I personally have some pretty deep ties with the fish shop, manju sweets shop and miso-maker in Ginza-Dori, as well as many of the people living in the neighborhood. Plus the Chikuma Cycling Club members always show up to participate (and eat fresh mochi!). So it's an important community-building event for our town. And our kids and the other children around get to pound mochi with us adults, so everyone participates and everyone eats!

Next year, come and join us for the Ginza Dori mochi making party.

この辺でチアーダンスがかなり流行っています。Ｒｉｅさんは更にレベル?いＣｏｍｍｅｒｃｉａｌ　Ｄａｎｃｅと言うスタイルです。ストリートジャズやヒップホップのブレンドで、本人はプリンスやカニエ・ウェストなどのヨーロッパツアーでのバックダンサーなされた。

Ｒｉｅさんの日本でのダンスワークショップはめったにしかないのでどうぞ、ご参加してみてください。（Ｒｉｅさんは上山田滞在中、我が亀清旅館に泊まる予定なので、応援しています。）

London-based Dance Instructor Rie Fujii will be holding some dance workshops here in Kamiyamada in January. For anyone interested in or practicing dance, this is an opportunity not to be missed.

Cheer dance seems to be popular around locally, but Rie specializes in the more advanced "Commercial Dance" style. It's the combination of street jazz and hiphop that is used in a lot of music videos. In fact, Rie has performed as a backdancer for the European legs of tours by artists such as Prince and Kanye West.

Lately we've been having a lot of dance-related guests here at Kamesei Ryokan. Besides Rie-san and her upcoming workshop, for the December 15th/16th hoops series between the Shinshu Brave Warriors and the Akita Northern Happinets here at the Togura Gym, the Happinets cheer dance team stayed at Kamesei.

戸倉上山田温泉のクリスマスとお正月のイベントお知らせ：

12月23日（日）クリスマス馬車
午後4時から5時半まで、カラコロ足湯から出発して、温泉街を回る無料クリスマス馬車に乗ってみませんか？上山田ホテルの二男、俊樹さんがハンゲツとハルカのポニーが引っ張る馬車を走らせます。
お子さん連れのご家族や、ロマンチックなカップルさんなど、皆様のきっと楽しいクリスマスの思い出になります。

1月6日（日）銀座通り餅つき大会
戸倉温泉の本通りと上山田温泉の本通りを繋いでいる銀座通りの商店街の皆様はこの頃、毎年に地元の餅つき大会を開催しています。温泉の甘露煮屋、味噌蔵、饅頭屋さん等の商店の皆さん、住民、観光客、サイクリングクラブのメンバーなどが集まるイベントです。午前11時ごろから始まる予定だそうです。

Take a free ride on a horse carriage from 4pm to 5:30pm. Rides start at the Kara-Koro Footbath. Fun Christmas memories for everyone, especially families with kids and couples.

06-Jan (Sun) Mochi Making at Ginza Dori
Ginza Dori is the lane that connects the main streets of Kamiyamada Onsen and Togura Onsen. For the past several years, the merchants along the street have been holding a mochi (sticky rice) making event. This time it will be on the 6th starting from around 11am. Come join the local merchants and neighbors for a yummy festival.

前日は農家と加工屋さんとの長野県主催の商談会。
次の日は千曲市の主催の旅館・農家・加工屋の交流会でした。以前は皆がどこかの公民館で集まったけど、今回は実際に農家さんと一緒に畑に入って、どういう農産物を育っているか現地での見学だった。

お蔭で、大根はどれだけ多くの種類があるかとか、
同じ千曲沢沿いの砂土なのに、戸倉の山芋と代表的で有名な松代の山芋の違い（松代産は水っぽい、戸倉産は粘りが多い）、
等などの農家のうんちくを頂きました。

この情報こそ、亀清の板長の持ち帰って、これからはどういう取引が出来るか、検討します。

五加地区の農家さんの皆様、色々と有難うございました。

One day we have a Prefecture-sponsored trade show with local farmers and producers. The next day we have a Farm-Inspection sponsored by Chikuma City. The farmers in the Goka district showed us ryokan owners and the chefs what type of produce they are growing. We learned so much great info, like just how many varieties of daikon radish there are, and the difference between yama-imo roots grown here vs. their more famous brethren grown in Nagano City's Matsushiro area. (Both are grown in the sandy soil along the Chikuma River, but ours have more stickiness, and Matsushiro's are more watery.)

Again, I took back lots of great info to our chef, so hopefully we'll be able to feature even more local produce here at Kamesei Ryokan.

長野県の主催で広域の農家さんや加工屋さん達との商談会が戸倉上山田温泉の観光会館で20日に行われた。色んな拘りの商品や珍しい野菜等が展示してあった。板長の為に情報をいっぱいゲットして、亀清旅館のお料理はさらに工夫した山の幸を出すようになっていきます。

Nagano Prefecture put on a trade show with local farmers and producers showcasing their various unique and high-quality products. The show was held on the 20th at the Tourism Hall here in Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen. I scoped out lots of great products for our chef to use, to make Kamesei Ryokan's cuisine even more specialized towards Nagano's great food culture.

戸倉上山田温泉の冬イルミネーションは11月17日からスタートしました。その夜の8時に私達旅館青年部の主催で点灯式を開催しました。

イルミネーション委員長の滝澤さん（ホテル雄山）が点灯音楽を準備して、そして見えたお客様の為に小石の湯の伝説のお守りのプレゼントも持って来てくれました。ＯＢの俊樹さんが馬車で来て、観光客（と私たち青年部）に乗せてくれました。地元のケーブルテレビも来て、撮影してくれました。

当日はずっと雨でした。点灯式の時間帯、20:00は雨の降る確率が100％でした。しかし、実行委員長の滝澤さんが晴れ男で、20:00の直前で雨がやみました。

今回の点灯式は初めてでした。ＰＲ不足や良くない天気のせいで、お客様が少なかったですが、工夫しながら継続したいと思いました。

カラコロ足湯の公園の光は2月末まで、本通りの光は3月17日までの予定。この冬の戸倉上山田温泉もどうぞ、楽しんでください。

The winter illumination for our onsen town, Togura Kamiyamada, officially got underway Saturday November 17th. The ryokan junior association held a Lighting Ceremony that evening at 8pm.

Our official Illumination Chief, Hideo-san from Hotel Yuzan, prepared music especially for the ceremony. He also brought gifts to give visitors who came to see the lights. And Toshiki-san brought his horse and buggy and gave free rides to guests (and to us ryokan guys, too!). Our local cable TV cameraman came and shot footage of the event.

This was the first time we've held an official lighting ceremony. It actually rained the whole day, and the weather forecast called for 100% chance of rain at 8pm. However, Hideo-san has a perfect track-record of no rain for any event he has been in charge of, and this time was no different. As if by magic, the rain stopped around 7:30, and we were able to enjoy a lovely, if a bit cold, ceremony.

Due to poor publicity and the rainy weather, we had very few people come to see our event. But with a little tweaking, I hope we can continue this in years to come.

This winter, Togura-Kamiyamada's lights will be on at the Kara-Koro footbath through the end of February, and our main street, Chuo-Dori, will be lit up until March 17th. Come and enjoy our onsen town this winter!

戸倉上山田温泉はこの冬にまたイルミネーションが行われます。カラコロ足湯の公園を中心として、そして上山田温泉の本通りをライトアップします。

その点灯式は11月17日（土）夜8時から行います。上山田ホテルの二男、俊樹さんが馬車を出しますので、ご家族の皆様でイルミネーションと馬車乗りを楽しんで頂けます。

カラコロ足湯の公園のイルミネーションは2013年2月末まで、本通りのライトアップは3月17日までの予定です。本通りとカラコロ足湯、その隣の東屋のイルミネーションは私達旅館青年部が飾り付けました。今年は新しく出来た小石の湯のモニュメントの周りにも光を付けました。そして、おかみの会の提供で公園の能舞台にもイルミネーションを付けました。

この冬は温度が低いかもしれませんが、戸倉上山田の温泉とイルミネーションで温かくなりそうです！

Our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada will again this winter brighten the night with colorful lights. Our main park with the Kara-koro foot bath will be lit up, as well as Kamiyamada Onsen's main street.

On Saturday November 17th, our official Lightup Ceremony will be held starting at 8pm. In addition to the illumination, Toshiki-san from Kamiyamada Hotel will offer free horse and buggy rides. Everyone from kids to adults can enjoy the fun.

The main park's illumination will continue through the end of February, 2013. And the main street will be lit until March 17th, 2013. The park's and street's illumination was set out by us, the ryokan junior association. This year we also added lights to the new Koishi-no-yu Legend Monument. Additional lights for the stage were provided by the ladies guild.

戸倉上山田温泉に新しい楽しみが出来ました:

人力車！

農家の堀口さんがマイ人力車を買って、戸倉上山田にお越しになる観光客に乗せています。

戸倉駅前のそば処「萱」から千曲川沿いのサイクリング道路などいくつかのコースがあります。３０分からのコースで料金は２０００円から。

人力車は乗った事がありますか？是非、この機会で戸倉上山田にお越しになって、乗ってみてください。

Our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada has a new activity to enjoy: Riding in a Rickshaw.

Local farmer Horiguchi-san bought his own rickshaw and is providing rides to visitors to our onsen town. Based out of Kaya, the soba restaurant in front of Togura Station, Horiguchi-san offers a variety of courses, from 30 minutes or longer, with prices starting at 2,000 yen.

Have you ever ridden in a rickshaw? Well, here is your chance! Come to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen and give it a try!
