戸倉上山田温泉の地酒、姨捨政宗はまた今年に蔵開きをかいさいする。2013年は3月31日です。
去年は私の親が訪ねていたので連れて行きました。酒蔵の見学はなかなか出来ないので、とっても良い経験でした。

戸倉上山田温泉では春の花のイベントとして近くの森「日本一あんずの里」のあんずまつりの注目をしているけど、
車で約３０分の所で、上田市ではもう一つなメージャーイベントがある:
上田城千本桜まつり
２０１３年度は４月５日から４月２１日までの予定。格好いい上田城と美しい桜の花の合わせは写真写りが抜群。
信州は春のイベントが盛り沢山！春よ来い！この春は信州に鯉！
Here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, all eyes are on Mori "Apricot Village" for the Apricot Blossom Festival.
But 30 minutes away by car in Ueda City, all the attention is on Ueda Castle and its 1000 cherry trees. The 2013 Ueda Castle Thousand Sakura Festival is scheduled to run from April 5th to the 21st.

Togura Kamiyamada's Newes Funky Restaurant Guide
「あかぱん」が紹介する「戸倉上山田おいしいもの図鑑」が出来上がりました。飲食店組合の作成で、パスタ屋Cocoroの栗原さんの絵とセンス（？）でOishi-Onsen似顔絵マップシリーズの最新版。
笑えるか笑えない、微妙なところですが、一つずつの絵はそれぞれの店の特徴を表現するので全部を読みたくなってしまう面白いガイドです。
何であかぱんか良く分かりませんが、この戸倉上山田温泉でこれだけこだわりのお店があるのは確かです。あかぱんの言葉を借ります:

Our onsen town Togura Kamiyamada is fortunate to have a plethora of unique restaurants. Each one is so, shall we say, 'uncommon' that no common restaurant guide would suffice. Hence this latest in their series of funky gourmet guides.
I'm not exactly sure where the character "Akapan" came from, but wearing his trademark red underwear, he graciously (gratuitously?) showcases 20 of our town's shops. Is it humorous? You decide. Are the restaurants good? I can vouch for that!

Celebrate Spring in Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen
戸倉上山田温泉のイースターエッグフェスティバル２０１３年は４月６日(土)に開催される予定です。１０時半からスタートで、千曲川沿いの噴水公園で行います。
公園でお菓子入りの卵を隠して子供達がガーと探すエッグハントに、
盛り沢山の卵のゲーム、
卵焼き (亀清旅館のＣｈｅｆ武井含めて調理師会提供）
ポニー馬車乗り、
参加者に温泉入浴 (戸倉上山田旅館組合提供）
親子で楽しめるイベント。
今年で第８回目でまた私が実行委員長で務めさせて頂きます。千曲国際交流協会のこの春の行事が年々に地元の子供達に馴染んできて、約１００人ぐらいの参加になるでしょう。
欧米の文化と戸倉上山田の自然と温泉の良さを是非、楽しんでください。
Onsen Town Togura-Kamiyamada's Easter Egg Festival 2013 will be held on Saturday April 6th. Starting at 10:30am, the event will take place at the Fountain Park along the Chikuma River.
There will be a massive egg hunt featuring 1000+ eggs filled with yummy treats, as well as numerous egg games, omelets prepared by Kamesei Ryokan's own Chef Takei, and even horse buggy rides. Participants will also be able to take an onsen bath provided by the Togura-Kamiyamada ryokans.
Come and enjoy a bit of Western culture as well as Togura-Kamiyamada's vernal splendor and fabulous onsen baths.

戸倉上山田温泉・千曲市の＃１春イベントは森「杏の里」地区のあんずまつりです。日本一の杏生産地で花が咲いている時にその農村全体が薄いピンク色と、見事な景色になります。
この平成25年の祭りの予定は4月6日から4月21日まで、
注目のスケッチパークのライトアップは4月12日（金）から14日（日）18：00～21：00の予定。
2013年はあんずまつりの第58回で、今年はビッグニュースがあります。何と、東京からある偉い方が杏の花を見に来る予定だそうです。日時は花咲き具合にもよるので、詳しい情報が入れば、お伝えします。
「一度は杏の里の花を見に行きたい」方は今年こそ是非、その方と一緒に見においでやす。
The main Spring event for our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada and the greater Chikuma City area is the Mori "Apricot Village" Apricot Blossom Festival. The dates for the 2013 edition have been announced as follows:
58th Annual Mori Apricot Blossom Festival April 6th-21st 2013.
Anzu-no-Sato Sketch Park Light Up will be April 12th-14th from 6-9pm.
And, a bit of big news: A certain individual from Tokyo is reportedly planning on coming to see the blossoms this year. Actual date will depend on the timing of the blossoms. As soon as information is released, we will announce it here on the blog.
So if you've been thinking about coming to see Mori's apricot blossoms, perhaps this is the year to do it!
杏の里は亀清旅館・戸倉上山田温泉から約１２ｋｍ、車で25分。電車の場合はしなの鉄道屋代駅からシャットルバス。
Mori Apricot Village is 12km from Togura-Kamiyamada, approx. 25 minutes by car. Train access is via Yashiro Station on the Shinano Railway line.
注:戸倉駅の上の天狗公園を通る道は近道になるけど、かなりクネクネ。There is also a windy, mountainous short cut.

上山田温泉を守る波閉科神社の参道入り口にこんな獻燈がある。
話によると、昔の上山田温泉は千曲川の洪水で何度も水没された。町が立てられて、川の暴れでやられて、立て直して、またやられて…
そして、１９５２年で土手が出来、やっと安定して、これだけな温泉町が成り立った訳。
その土手との改修工事の記念で波閉科神社でこの獻燈が建てられた。上山田温泉の私達には重要な記念だ。
Near the entrance to Habeshina Jinja, the main shrine for our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada, is a pair of stone columns. They are engraved with the words "Chikuma River Stabilization Commemorative".
From what I gather, when the founding fathers of our onsen town struggled with rebuilding after a series of floods of the Chikuma River that runs through the center. It was only after a levee was built in 1952 that the town stabilized and was able to thrive.
The columns were erected in commemoration of the levee's construction.

長野県のトップ１００温泉の調査の中で、とんでもない遠いところまで冒険しています。が、今回は我が亀清旅館の最も近い温泉施設： 湯の華銭湯 瑞祥 上山田本館。亀清旅館から歩いて１分。瑞祥は戸倉上山田温泉の７つの外湯の中で一番設備がそろっていて、一番湯船の種類が多い。料金は一番高い（６５０円/大人）ですが、それなりに設備や湯船が充実しています。

沢山の種類のおふろ。サウナも付いている。

In my relentless research of Nagano Prefecture's Top 100 Onsens, I've been to some pretty far away places. But this time, I went to the one closest to us here at Kamesei Ryokan -- Zuisho.
Located literally just across the street from us, Zuisho is one of 7 public bathhouses in our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada. It is the priciest at 650 yen for adults, but Zuisho is by far the most extensively appointed bathhouse and has the largest variety of baths:
"Iwa-buro" indoor bath featuring rare green and red-hued boulders, (The onsen water pouring into this bath is drinkable)
Jet-bath,
'Medicine-rock' outdoor bath whose special rocks add a milky feel to the onsen water, (This bath's onsen water is 100% free-flowing)
"Ne-Yu" outdoor bath which is enjoyed while laying down,
Two ceramic baths,
A third ceramic bath with normal water for a hot-cold treatment.
There is also sauna, too.
Besides the baths, Zuisho also has a complete massage facilities as well as cafeteria that features soba noodles hand-made on the premises.
This time I went I received special permission to take pictures, hence these photographs.
So if you come to our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada,
for spending the night I suggest our inn Kamesei,
but for daytrippers or people who want to try multiple baths, Zuisho is a luxurious option.

This Year's Setsubun Bean Throwing
3日の節分で戸倉上山田温泉の上の善光寺別院で祈祷と豆まきがありました。日曜日だった為、会社や学校が休みで、いつもより大勢で集まった。うちも、子供三人を連れて行きました。そして、今年は本堂の中でやった。立派なお寺さんの中で、尚且つ多くの参加者で、かなり盛り上がりました。
来年は二男のＫｅｎ君が年男で、まく役を楽しみにしている。しかし、来年の2月3日は月曜日。豆をまくために学校を休むわけに行かないよね。
善光寺別院は今、小石の湯旅館の西澤さんが面倒を見ている。旅館の仲間と今回のイベントを開催してくれた。皆さん、ご苦労様でした。（来年は私も手伝わせてくれるかな？）
February 3rd was "Setsubun" Day in Japan, marking the midpoint of the winter season. Back in the States, everyone's attention was on Punxsutawney Phil (apparently the groundhog didn't see his shadow this year), while here in Japan all eyes were on the lookout for 'Oni' devils. If you see any peanuts on the ground, they are likely left over from people throwing them at the Oni to ward off evil. It's an annual tradition here in Japan.
For our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada, the Zenkoji Branch Temple on the hill behind us holds a religious ceremony and bean throwing event every year. This year being a Sunday and most companies and schools closed, a relatively huge crowd gathered for the event. Our three children were also able to go. And this year, the bean throwing was held inside the main temple building. With the majestic setting and the larger than normal number of people, it was a lively event.

日本の温泉文化は素晴らしい。地下から来たお湯はそれなりの自然の力、自然の現象がある。温度、成分、臭い、効果、味、それぞれの特徴がある。
そして、もう一つ: 色。
この戸倉上山田温泉では外湯は７軒があります。先日は初めて戸倉観世温泉に行ってみました。我が亀清旅館から万葉橋を渡って、新戸倉温泉にある共同浴場。先頭風で、自販機から切符を買って男女別の入口で脱衣場に入ると番台があって、そのおばさんに券を渡してはいる。

そして、銭湯風でＢＹＯＳＳです。（自分の石鹸とシャンプーをもって来なきゃ。）湯船は源泉別々で２つがある。一つはぬるめで小さ目（３～４人）で少し茶色系の硫黄泉のヒノキ風呂。
もう一つの大きい方のは
何と、見事な緑色のお湯。
単純硫黄泉で適温の４０℃前後で、その辺はこの上山田温泉とほぼ変わらない。そして、うちのお風呂も、気温の変更によってちょっと緑色になる事がある。
ただ、戸倉観世温泉はちょっとの所じゃなくて、真緑ですよ。吃驚しました。これは面白い温泉だなと。常連のお客さんには当然人気あるけど、私みたいな温泉バカでユニークなお湯が好む人には大喜び。そして、もう一つ凄いのはシャワーまで温泉のお湯を使っています。どれだけ温泉が豊富かと。
我が上山田温泉と亀清旅館と大した距離じゃないのに、これだけお湯の色が違うと言うのは不思議。
ちなみに、観世温泉の名前の由来は1932年に観音様が導いて、発見されたそうです。目立つ緑色のお湯と、奥深い深い由来、戸倉観世温泉。
大人300円、05:00-22:00、定休日は第1・3月曜日。
The world of Japanese Onsens never stops to amaze me. There is such a variety of hot spring waters -- different temperatures, mineral content, smells, tastes, effects.
And, colors!
I recently went to Togura Kanze Onsen, one of the 7 public bath houses here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. I was suprised to see the amazing green color of the main bath.
Kanze Onsen is built in the style of a 'sento' public bath house. You buy your ticket from a vending machine, entrances to the changing rooms are divided male and female, at the entrance you hand your ticket to the attendant sitting at the 'Bandai' booth.
It's a bit unsettling that the old lady sitting at the Bandai has a full view into the changing room. But just swallow your pride, and deal with it. (Note that Kanze Onsen is BYOSS -- Bring Your Own Soap and Shampoo.)
The bathing area has 2 baths. One is a 3-4 person small one whose dedicated onsen source is a bit on the lukewarm-side, but with a pleasant sulfur smell and a bit of a brown tint to the water. The main bath, and Kanze Onsen's claim to fame (among us Onsen-geeks anyways) uses a separate onsen source that is a bit warmer (the bath temperature was a moderate 40 deg C) and a similar sulfur content, but its color was an amazing shade of green.
It's crazy that a negligible difference in location of the onsen source can produce such a unique color of water. But regardless, besides us onsen-lovers, Kanze has a huge following of regular users.
By the way, Kanze Onsen's name refers to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, who apparently is responsible for the onsen source being discovered back in 1932.
