…由布院には敵わない所が沢山ある。その面では由布院の人気度は納得が出来る。

写真は立ち寄り湯させて頂きました「夢想園」、金鱗湖沿いの200円「下ん湯」、今回にお世話になった蓮輪旅館の露天風呂。

... These are some of the things that make Yufuin what it is, and what we here in Togura Kamiyamada can't hope to imitate.

3日は5人（日本、オーストラリア、アメリカ）を連れて、千曲市桑原地区の開眼寺に座禅してきました。

朝5時に。

開眼寺の柴田さんは毎朝5時座禅をやっていまして、「いつでもどうぞ」と誘ってくれています。亀清旅館ではじゃらんネットとかで「若旦那と朝5時座禅」と言う宿泊プランを出していますが、

全然売れない。

まあ、朝5時と言うハードルが高いし。

（よく売れたら、逆に私の体がもつかどうか心配…）

個人的に座禅に興味があるけど、私も情けないで誰かが「連れてくれ」と言わない限りで、なかなか行かない。

最近は誰も「連れてくれ」と言ってくれていないせいで、
最近は座禅をしていない。

今回はお客さんの方から言ってきましたので、ズクを出して、寒い12月の朝5時にお出かけしてきました。

頭がすっきりしました!

座禅の後の柴田さんとのお茶タイムはまた哲学的なお話が出来、良い一日の始まりになりました。

On the morning of the 3rd, I took 5 other guests (Japanese, Australian and American) to Kaigen-ji Temple on the other side of town for zazen meditation.

At 5am.

Shibata-san, the monk running Kaigen-ji, does zazen every morning at 5am, and he gives everyone a standing invitation to join.

We at Kamesei Ryokan even offer a stay plan including 5am Zazen Meditation.

It never gets any takers.

Perhaps one reason is getting up at 5am is too high of a hurdle.

(I'm actually glad it doesn't sell -- I doubt my body could take getting up every morning at 5am!)

Although I personally have a deep interest in meditation, I find myself being too lazy to go on my own. So it's only when a guest asks to be taken that I go.

And no guests have asked to be taken lately, so it's been a long time since I've gone.

But this cold December morning, I braved the chill and went with our guests to meditate.

It sure helped to clear my mind.

And the talk over tea with Shibata-san afterwards was an inspiring way to start the morning!

11月25日は長野県旅館青年部の研修会でマネージメントゲームを二日間かけて、やってきました。Ｂ／ＳやＰ／Ｌの計算の勉強など、宿経営の改善に結ぶ!

今年度は美咲ちゃんが７歳になります。１０日に着物を着させて、家族の写真を撮って、上田の生島足島神社にてお参りしました。
本人は「帯が重い」とか写真の時にポーズで苦しんだり、せっかくの七五三なのにあまり良い思い出はなかったかもしれません。
七五三はそんなもんなのかな?
お子さんより、ママとパパが喜ぶ祝い?
パパとして、次に娘の着物の姿が見えるのは、１３年後の成人式の時かと思えば、なお今日の事は貴重だな。

In Japan, there is a celebration for girls when they reach 3 years old and again 7 years old. For boys, it is when they become 5 years old. Our daughter Misaki will turn 7 this school year, so we celebrated her "7-5-3" on November 10th.
Misaki probably doesn't have many fond memories of the experience, with the weight of obi belt that wraps around the kimono, and the hassle of posing for the family portrait. But maybe that's typical of these 7-5-3 events -- it's mostly for the parents.
The next time I'll get to see Misaki wearing a kimono will probably be in 13 years, for her Coming of Age ceremony. So this day was extra-special for me.

長野県と京都府のそれぞれの旅館組合青年部の交流事業で、２８日に京都に行ってきました。
Ｔｈｅ　Ｓｃｒｅｅｎと言う最新デザイン宿の見学に社長の講演、
京都の組合の外国人観光客の取り組み、
そして長野県のインバウンド事業の発表。
発表者は何と、私！

その夜は皆で祇園のお茶屋桝梅に行きました。

伝説の舞妓さんと座敷遊び。

とにかく、感動！一生忘れられない。

この外国人の私だけだと思ったら、京都の連中さえ写真ぱしぱし。

現代の日本はクールが沢山あるけど、芸子さんはその最も！

On October 28th, the Kyoto Ryokan Junior Assoc. invited the Nagano team to join them for a seminar. We got to take a tour of The Screen, one of the most fashionable 'design hotels' in the world, as well as a talk by the owner. Then the Kyoto guys made a presentation on their projects for guests from overseas. Finally, our Nagano team made our presentation, with Yours Truly doing the presenting.

That night, we went to the Gion district and the Kyoto team treated us to the ochaya Masu-ume, where we were entertained by maiko.

It was an unforgettable experience -- totally mesmerizing. And I thought it was just me, the foreigner who felt so, but even the Kyoto guys couldn't stop taking pictures!

九州国際大の福島規子先生が戸倉上山田温泉にお越しになって頂いて、ちょっとした座談会が行われた。「おもてなし」のプロでいらっしゃる先生は相当深く勉強なされている。
ホスピタリティーとサービスの違いって説明で私は目が覚められた。
ホスピタリティーってホスト⇔ゲストの関係で両方共が同じレベル、つまり、友達の様。
サービスってマスター⇔サーバントの関係で、上・下との立場で、とにかくお金を出す方と頂く方でそれぞれの期待と義務がある。
私はどちらかと言うと、フレンドリーなおもてなし派でホスピタリティーに近いけど、あくまでお金を頂いているからその役割を忘れずに…との事。
本当に目が覚めた。福島先生、有難うございました！

Kyushu Int'l University's Prof. Noriko Fukushima, a specialist in "omotenashi", came to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen for an informal gathering. She gave a short talk about the difference between "service" and "hospitality". I had never thought so deeply about the matter before.
With "hospitality", there is a host and a guest, and both are basically at the same level, in other words, a friendly relationship.
With "service", it is a master and servant relationship, one person higher and the other lower, with money being exchanged and both sides having expectations and duties accordingly.

I tend to approach my job as an innkeeper with a friendly disposition which runs the risk of overstepping my bounds as the 'servant'. Something to keep in mind and adjust!

Fukushima-sensei, thank you for the enlightening lesson!

袈裟は青空でおきましたが、昨日の台風は凄かったです。千曲川が暴れて、土手と土手の間の全部が川水となりました。しかし、土手のお蔭でこの戸倉上山田温泉はほぼ無事でした。

川の暴れは私が長野に引っ越してからの8年間の間の3回目です。つい最近にこの同じ川にイカダ下りをやりました。

自然の力はすごいですね！

皆様は台風がいかがでしたか？

Here at our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada, we woke up to a deep blue sky. It's hard to imagine that just yesterday we were inundated with rain from the passing typhoon. The rainfall made the Chikuma River swell to cover everything from levee to levee. But thanks to those levees, our onsen town escaped any big damage.

In the 8 years since I've moved here to Nagano, this is the 3rd time to see the river come up this high. And to think just last month we had a leisurely rafting event on the river!

長野県の「山岳高原を活かした世界水準の滞在型観光地づくり研究」会に呼ばれました。
過去の経験でこういう研究会は会議の為の会議で終わっちゃう恐れがあるが、
今回の研究員に私の憧れている観光地活性化プロの清水眞一(立教大学)と山田圭一郎(JTICツェルマット)、と星野リゾートの星野社長。
そして、どの観光地が世界基準に育つか決めるという明確なアウトプットがあったから参加しました。
まさかその先輩と同じテーブルに座れるか、
そしてそのどなたかと喧嘩になると思わなかった。

県の5年間計画で、ツェルマットやウィスラーのような登山もカンファレンス、両方ができるリゾートを作りたいと。

浅間山は先月に登ったからある程度詳しい。登山コースは2つだけ、世界基準にはちょっと物足りないと思った。リゾート関係は軽井沢になるけど、軽井沢はこの制度なくても成長しているから要らない？

飯山・信越は北アルプスにかなわないと、地元のリーダー役の方に言われた事がある。黒姫から志賀高原までってまとめられるか、不安。

小谷・栂池は独自の魅力というより、白馬の影にある。雨飾さんは設備が無くて。

白馬は冬にスキーのメッカ、夏は白馬連峰登山やアウトドアーアドベンチャー、魅力たっぷり。知名度も98年の五輪の影響もあり、高い方です。宿泊、飲食店、グルリンバス、長野駅や成田のバス、全ては良し。ビジターセンターを磨きたいぐらい。

大町はアルペンルートがあるが、ルートの三分の一は隣の富山県。冬と夏の魅力、知名度、宿泊や飲食施設の全ては白馬に近つかない。

上高地は槍ヶ岳や穂高連峰「別名：アルプスの銀座」という登山メッカ、宿泊施設は世界基準と違わない帝国ホテルから始まり、さまざまな施設やキャンプ場があり、自然ガイドが沢山いて、交通は松本・飛騨高山を連携するパスがあり、
問題は冬に基本的に閉じてある事。しかし、知名度は既に高いし、冬の運営さえ改善すれば素晴らしいリゾートになると思う。

御嶽山は浅間山より「山」として触れ合えるし、麓の開田高原があり、木曽馬やお蕎麦の文化、山の信仰、独自の魅力を持っている。しかし、山の「雄大」さ穂高連峰や白馬連峰に負けるのではないかとこの登山ファンの私に疑問が残っています。知名度にも問題がある様に感じます。白馬と上高地と違って海外の代表的なガイドブック「ロンリープラネット」と「ミシュラン」に載っていない。

という事で、タイラー's選択は：
１．白馬
２．（冬期を開放するとの条件で）上高地

しかし、議論の始まりである先輩が最初から「上高地はまず駄目。国立公園だから何も作れない」と言い出した。私がいくら議論しても、上高地がそれで下りられた。
まあ、上高地に隣の白骨温泉と乗鞍をセットしなかった応募者の松本市にも責任があるでしょうけど、しかし今回の制度は「何かを作る」という目的はあったのか？あるとしても国立公園だからこそ自然を守る施設を作れるように交渉が出来るのではないか…

結局、決められたのは
１．白馬・小谷村・大町のセット　→広過ぎと違う？どうやってブランディングする？「北アルプス」になる？だったら、上高地まで広げても良いのではない？とにかく、ブランドはやはり「白馬」だと思う。
２．御嶽山　山の信仰と木曽街道で決められた。→良いけど、木曽街道は木曽川周辺で、山じゃない。今回は「山岳高原」の意味が薄くなっても良い？
３．飯山中心の信越エリア。→新幹線の駅が出来るの強みになるかどうかはこれから判明となるが、その辺の山は「登山」というより「ハイキング」ですよ。その一番高い山、志賀高原の横手山、の売りは？「北アルプスが見える」って事。だったら北アルプスにすれば良いのではないか？！

ちゃんとしたアウトプットのある会議に参加が出来、嬉しいと思いながら、私の意見を通せなかった悔しい反面もある。

上高地の応募文章の中で、「訪れた人々の人生を豊かにする場所である」って書いてあった。その面では上高地と白馬は間違えないその力があると思う。今回はその「ハート」の面より、更に深くの魂の面（御嶽山の信仰）まで行ったのは日本として珍しいと思った。これで良い結果が出る様に祈っております。

戸倉上山田温泉夏祭りはあまりにも迫力が上がって、この祭り男は盛り上がり過ぎ癖がある。仲間の学さんが撮った写真ですが、私がワショイし過ぎかな？その情熱が担ぎ手に伝わって入るようです。それは良い事だが、私がアホに見えるかどうか心配となってきた。気合を入り過ぎ？

2013年度の温泉夏祭りはこれで終了になりました。2014年度のは7月19・20日です。既に楽しみにしております。皆さん、是非に見に来て頂きたいと思います♪

I admit -- I have a tendency to get a little over-excited when it comes to festivals. Kamiyamada's Onsen Summer Festival is especially so full of energy, and I tend to go a bit overboard. Here I am pictured cheering on one of the parade float-like mikoshi. My enthusiasm seems to catch on with the guys carrying the mikoshi, but I must look like an idiot.

Oh well, the onsen summer festival is just once a year, and 2013's is finished. I am already looking forward to July 19th and 20th, 2014, the dates of next year's festival. Won't you join me in being a festival idiot?
