A gathering like this doesn't happen very often: Arudo Debito, the 'Michael Moore' of Japan; Sayuki, Japan's first foreigner geisha, and Yours Truly, the blue-eyed 'wakadannna' innkeeper. The three of us, in our various ways, are actively working to bridge the gaijin-nihonjin gap and share Japan's rich culture with people overseas (as well as working to open Japan up to some Western ideas). Needless to say, we had some lively discussions. Up to 2:30 in the morning. Two days straight!

旅館組合青年部の皆は毎年、活動報告を出さなければならない。こうやって見れば、一年間の出来事は凄いですね。青年部の先輩の皆様、今年も宜しくお願い致します。また色々と教えていただけるようにお願い致します。

旅館と言うのは、ある意味でお客様の命を扱う。大げさかもしれませんけど、私はお客様の安全を大事にしたいです。その為に、防火管理の資格も取り、今日は消防の方に来てもらって、訓練やりました。初めてだったので良い勉強、良い経験になりました。消防の方、ご親切に色々と教えて頂いて、有難うございました。
As an inn, in some ways we are responsible for the lives of our guests. That may be an exaggeration, but I believe in the importance of providing for the safety for our guests. To that end, I got certified in Fire Prevention, and today we had the fire department come and we ran a fire drill. It was a valuable experience - I learned a lot. I want to thank the fire department for their kindness.

戸隠の観光協会に呼ばれて、「欧米人はどのおもてなしを認めているか」と言う講演を致しました。一緒にお話したのはシルビー・ジャコさんでした。シルビーさんの本も読んでいるし、彼女の事は良く聞いていましたが、実際に会うのは初めてでした。そうすると、お話がすごく合って、とっても良かったです。講演も「為になった」と言われましたし、私がさらに戸隠ファンになりました。
The Togakushi Tourism Bureau invited me to give a talk on what Westerners are looking for when they come to Japan. The co-speaker was Sylvie Jacquot, a 'long-termer' from France living in Togakushi. I had heard so much about Sylvie, and am reading her book, so I was excited to get the opportunity to meet her. It turns out we have a lot in common, especially our love of Nagano and desire to share the beauty of Nagano with people overseas.

来冬の為の薪集まりが続いています。今度は上山田の宮下農園さんからりんごの剪定物を頂き。（息子がヘルプしてくれました。）りんご屋さんは剪定物が沢山出て困るし、亀清みたいな薪ストーブのあるところは薪が欲しくて困るから、ちょうどお互いさんです。
The wood collecting for next winter continues. Today it was apple tree trimmings. (Our son Andy assisting.) The orchardists always end up with way more trimmings than they can possibly burn, and wood stove owners like Kamesei need as much wood as possible, so it's a perfect symbiotic relationship.

千曲市役所の国際室の関連で私が上山田小学校の１，２年生に英語の授業をやりました。上小はどちらかと言うと既に国際的になっています。タイ系、韓国系、中国系、米国系（我が息子）、最近まではハンガリー系もいました。それでも、外国人に会う機会が少ない子もいます。ですから、「英語の勉強」より、外国人とふれあいの事です。まあ、私のアメリカの文化もちょっとでもShareが出来たと思います。
The International Office of Chikuma City had me go to our local Kamiyamada Elementary School today to help out with an English class. Kami-sho (as it's known) is already fairly international, with students' backgrounds ranging from Thai and Korean and Chinese to American (our son) and (until recently) Hungarian. But some of the students don't have an opportunity to meet foreigners, so more than teaching English, my role is to let the students interact with a real-live 'gaijin'. And, hopefully, I shared some of my American culture with the students.

昨日と今日は薪集まり・薪割りで忙しかったです。薪割りは良い運動ですけど、やはり疲れます。その後の温泉は気持ち良い！先日はテレビ信州の取材で峰竜太さんが来て、本人は薪割の手伝いをしてくれました。こんなにいっぱいある時に来てもらいたい！:)
Yesterday and today I was busy with getting and chopping firewood. Chopping is good exercise, but it wore me out. A few days ago, TV Shinshu was here to tape a show, and they brought actor Ryuta Mine. As part of the shoot, Mine-san helped chop some wood. Where is he now when I really need him? 🙂

年に２，３回ぐらい地元の上山田小学校の英語のクラスにヘルプしています。ボランティアの気持ちでお陰で町の子供達の顔が段々と覚えてきました。私が正式的な先生じゃないのに、どこへ行っても子供達に｢タイラー先生！｣と呼ばれています。恥ずかしい！
2 or 3 times a year, I get to help out at the local Kamiyamada Elementary School with their English program. I enjoy the chance to volunteer at the school, and it is an opportunity to recognize the kids in the town. Most of them call me Tyler-Sensei, even though I'm not even close to being an official teacher.

戸倉の公民館が定期的に市民講座を開き、今日は私に喋る様に頼んでくれました。以前に松本大学でやった講演のテーマ：｢外国人(欧米人)はどう言うおもてなしを求めているか｣でした。１０月に今度は上山田公民館で又やる予定です。
The Togura Souzoukan Community Center across the river from our onsen town puts on a regular series of talks by various speakers. Today they had me give the speech. I based it on one I'd done previously for Matsumoto University: What kind of service do foreigners expect in Japan.
