16年前に、隣の町の田中さんと知り合いました。その時から、才能のある方だといつも感動していました。夕べは友達のグループを亀清に連れてきてくれました。宴会の時のエンターテインメントは何と田中さんの日本舞踊でした。今度、第２ステージは田中さんの尺八演奏でした。歌はAmazing Grace　（驚くばかりの主の恵み）でした。欧米の伝統名、歴史のあるの、意味深い歌に日本らしい楽器。素晴らしかったです。問題は音痴の私が一緒に歌いました。田中さんは｢最近は尺八を練習していない｣と仰いました。練習したらきっとさらに上手くなるでしょうが、私の音痴歌がなかなか治らない。。。
An acquaintance of mine from 16 years ago, Mrs. Tanaka, brought a group of friends to Kamesei last night. During their dinner banquet, Tanaka-san provided the entertainment with some traditional Japanese dancing. Then for round 2, she brought out her shakuhachi (a traditional Japanese flute) and played Amazing Grace. It made for a beautiful fusion of traditional Japanese musical instrument and a song close to the heart to many Westerners.
Unfortunately she asked me to sing along with her performance. I can't carry a tune to save my life. She later commented that she is out of practice. I am sure she would become even better with a little practice. The problem is my singing...

亀清旅館の玄関の横に薪用の小屋を作りました。ある材料を使って、結局1500円ぐらいで作れました。これからは来冬に向かってまきを集まらなきゃ。この新しい小屋きちんと乾燥させれる。そして、玄関も整理が出来ます。
その1500円は12'の2x4，3本の為でした。よく見たら、カナダのマークがありました。懐かしかったです。私の以前の人生（旅館の跡継ぎの為に来る前まではシアトルで貿易関係で勤めておりました）、北米から日本へ木材を多分１０００TEU（貨物のコンテナー）以上も手配した。私が今度その同じ木材の消費者になるのは不思議です。
Now I can add one more item to my list of personal accomplishments: I built a wood shed. A pretty darn dandy one if you ask me. And thanks to using mostly materials on hand, it only cost a bit more than 15 bucks. Now I have to start working on filling it with firewood for next winter!
By the way, the 15 bucks went for 3 12' two-by-fours. They had the Canadian maple leaf on them. That brought back some memories. In my previous life (before moving here to take on the inn, I worked for a trading company back in Seattle), I must have moved over a thousand TEU's (ocean-going containers) of lumber from North America to Japan. And here I am now as the end user of some of that same lumber. Who woulda thunk it.

アメリカのオバマさんの大統領になる式が行われました。２５０万人が見たと。日本での注目も凄い。世界中の期待感がこの１人に物凄く重いです。たった一人はどれだけ「Change」が出来ますでしょうか？まあ、前の大統領のたった一人でアメリカの立場をそれだけダウンしたから、オバマ氏にその立場を直すのに望んでいます。

Obama was sworn in as the new president of the US, in front of 2.5 million people. It's all the press here in Japan is talking about. The global expectations on this one man are intense. Can one man really effect this much "change"? Well, his predecessor single-handedly changed America's position in the world for the worse. Here's hoping Obama can change it now for the better. And, as Obama said in his speech, he's not just one man, he leads all of us Americans.

私の地元のシアトル市は１８６９年に生まれました。割りと若い町です。百何十年前に。いつも感心していますが、この善光寺平はの周辺（千曲市も込めて）の人間の歴史は一千何百年、もしくは何千年もある。
夕べ、長野市古間区のこのメンバーの新年会で妻と私に「北信流」の式をやってくれました。私は知識不足ですが、この北信流のルーツはかなり古いです。私は大好きです。北信の歴史の奥深さを感じさせます。式が終わったら、「どう思いましたか」と聞かれました。「この為に日本に来た」と答えました。
北信流　おめでたい時やお祝いの時に昔から北信で行われています。北信というのは善光寺の鐘の音が届く範囲だと聞いています。内容はお酒をお互いにあげるところと、一番感動的のは独特な歌があります。この写真じゃ歌の良さが全然伝わらない。皆さんはこの戸倉上山田温泉や北信のどっかの宴会に呼ばれたら、運が良ければ、北信流に参加できるかもしれない。この伝説、歌を歌える人、が段々と少なくなってきた。私もいつかこの歌を覚えたいと思っています。
My hometown of Seattle was incorporated in 1869. It's history is still very short. In contrast, I am constantly amazed at how long human history is here in the Zenkoji Plain (of which Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is on the southern tip). Seattle's history is measured in tens, maybe hundreds of years. This area's is measured in hundreds, maybe thousands of years.
Last night we had some guests from the Furuma district in Nagano City. They performed a ritual for my wife and I at the end of their New Year banquet. It's called "Hokushin-Ryu", or a tradition Northern Nagano. The ritual consists of trading drinks of sake, accompanied by a song. The song just feels primordial and ancient. It really gives you a sense of the deep historical roots of the area. It's something that can't be conveyed in text or pictures -- it needs to be experienced in person. So if you are ever invited to a banquet in our onsen town of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen or some other place in Northern Nagano (as defined by the area reached by the sound of the bells at Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City), you may get to see the Hokushin-Ryu performed. That is, if you are lucky. The tradition, and the people that can sing the song, are slowly disappearing....

温泉旅館の経営者は休みを取る時にどこに行くでしょうか？もちろん、他の温泉旅館へ。私達も温泉が好きだし、他の宿に泊まるといい刺激になります。

今回の家族のお正月休みで渋湯田中温泉の「清風荘」に泊まりました。新しいヒノキ風呂が出来たって聞いて、亀清もヒバの露天風呂が仮オープンしたばかりなので勉強を込めて行って見ました。

一番感心したのは所々に生け花が飾ってあったことです。亀清旅館の客室の床の間にも新鮮な花を置くように頑張りたいと思いました。置物を置くより大変ですけど、それはやはり日本の旅館のおもてなしの1つですよね。

大関さん、大変を世話になりました。お蔭さまで、うんとRefreshが出来ました。

Where do innkeepers go on their holidays? To stay at another inn, of course. Our family loves onsens, too, you know. For our New Years holiday vacation, we went to stay at Seifuso at Shibu-Yudanaka Onsen. They recently installed a new Japanese cedar bath, and I wanted to get some tips for our new one.

The thing I was most impressed with was they had fresh cut flowers displayed ikebana style all throughout the inn. I wish we could have ikebana in the tokonoma alcoves in our guest rooms. It would be a lot of work, but that's all part of the ryokan's "omotenashi" service.

Ozeki-san, thanks to your hospitality we had a revitalizing stay. We appreciated it!

2008年はやっと「さよなら」です。中国の諺で「面白い時代に生きれるように」。それは良い事か悪い事か、2008年のせいで分からなくなちゃった。油代がバカ高くなった事は今に思うと、何だったかって感じです。油の価格が安く戻ったからこれで皆がエコの事を忘れちゃうでしょうか？
油が安くなったけど、その代わりサブプライムの問題が爆発して、世界中の経済が「100年の嵐」に入った。知り合いや親戚で「給料カット」やもっと恐ろしく、「仕事全体カット」の話が増えています。世の中、温泉宿の宿泊が出来なくなっちゃう恐れがあります。旅館は「贅沢」ではなく、逆に経済などから発生しているストレスを発散する為な必要な薬だと皆様に考えて頂きたいです。お互いに頑張りましょう。
という事で、この2008年をまとめるところですが、旅館青年部の皆さんがこの年度が3月までなのでその時に正式的にまとめて、報告するわけです。取り敢えず、1つだけの自慢の出来事を許してください。前年の男湯の「百年風呂」露天風呂の次に、今年は女湯にヒバの露天風呂をかり完成できました。クリスマスに始めてお湯を入れました。これで亀清旅館のお風呂が大分充実しましたので来年は客室の庭や中の設備に集中したいと思っております。
そして、亀清旅館以外な1つな大きい出来事がありました。9月末に「長野インバウンドサミット」が行われました。実行委員長：私。その動きがどんどんといいところにいっていますので2009年にも頑張りたいと思っておりますので宜しくお願いいたします。
Today we finally get to say goodbye to 2008. There's an old Chinese proverb: "May you live in interesting times." Until this year, I never really thought of that as a curse. Oil prices went insanely high, then suddenly collapsed. Does this mean the end to everyone's environmental efforts? Then the Subprime problem absolutely exploded, leaving the world's economy with a 100 Year Storm. I just hope people don't think of a stay at an onsen ryokan as an unnecessary luxury, but a necessary medicine to help alleviate all the stress the economy is causing.
This is where I would normally write a personal review of the year, but as a Ryokan Junior Association member, our calendar year goes through the end of March. I'll be writing my personal review at that time. For now, though, please allow me to boast of one major accomplishment here at Kamesei Ryokan. The previous year, I made the "100 Year Bath" outdoor bath for the guys' bath. This year, we managed to put in a cedar bath outside the ladies' bath. Now our ryokans baths are fairly respectable, so next year I will turn my efforts to the gardens and other areas inside the inn.
One other huge personal accomplishment was pulling off the Nagano Inbound Summit. The network that has come out of NIS is poised for great things in 2009, so hang on for the ride!

亀清旅館の次期社長として、旅館の経営に付いて習わなければならないことが多いです。今日は旅館組会の先輩達と長野県のコロボレーションで旅館経営の勉強会が行われました。私にとっては専門語が難しかったので皆の足を引っ張ったと思いますが、「社長」という役割は改めてよく考えました。船の船長のようで目的地を決めて、Crewの皆とよく分担して一緒に嵐に倒されないように努力すると言う例えがありました。この分科会がまた続くので亀清丸のいい船長になれるように頑張ります！
As next in line to be the owner of Kamesei Ryokan, there is a lot I need to learn about running an inn. Some of my senpai (elders) in the ryokan association, in conjunction with Nagano Prefecture, put on a management seminar today. I attended, despite my difficulties with the language when it gets into the technical terms of management, and got a crash course in the difficulties of running an inn. One example that came up was of a captain running a ship, trying to keep it on track for its destination, managing the sailors and trying to keep the ship stable as it gets battered by storms.
The seminars are scheduled to continue, so I will get management practice to hopefully keep the good ship Kamesei sailing strong.

旅館青年部の全国大会の帰り、名古屋をちょっと観光しました。1900年の歴史の熱田神宮は感動的でした。宝物間は休館だったせいか草薙の剣は見えませんでしたけど徳永の三人の刀は見えた。帰りは豪華のイタリアンのレストランに寄って、先輩に昼食をご馳走になりました。私は先輩になったらこうやって後輩にちゃんとやってあげなきゃ。
On the way back from the Junior Innkeepers Assoc. National Meeting, we did some sightseeing around Nagoya. The 1900-year old Atsuta Jingu shrine was especially impressive. We didn't get to see 'kusunagi-no-tsurugi' sword, perhaps because the museum was closed. That sword is one of the 3 legendary artifacts handed down from the gods to Japan's first emperor. But we did get a peek at Ieyasu Tokugawa's 3-person katana.
On the way back, we stopped at a gourmet Italian restaurant for lunch, where we were treated by our 'senpai' elders. I need to remember to someday pass on such an experience to my 'juniors'.

2年に一度は旅館青年部の全国大会が行います。今回は名古屋でした。私が思いますが、毎年じゃなくて良かった。大会後の復活は時間がかかる！でも、沢山の良い人と出会いが出来たし、情報交換が出来た。青年部で積極的な方が多いし、キャラクターも多いですね。（笑）まあ、うちの先輩に始め、皆様に感謝しています！
Every two years, the Junior Innkeepers Association holds their national meeting. I'm glad it's not held every year -- recuperating after the party 'til 3am deal is rough. But I got to meet a bunch of cool innkeepers and exchanged good info. I really appreciate the efforts of my 'senpai' elders and the others of the organization.

今日は会議、会議、会議、会議。そして明日は泊まりの会議。女将社長に怒られながら、あちらこちらに飛んでいます。今朝は上山田温泉会社と2つ目の露天風呂の為にお湯の量を増やして頂けるように打ち合わせ、それから長野市へ3の会議に出かけてきました。まずは長野市のロータリークラブに欧米人の旅行者は何を求めているかのお話を、そして長野県の「エコ」泊の会議、最後は広告会社と千曲市の英語のパンフの打ち合わせ。
そして明日は2年に一度の旅館組合青年部全国大会＠名古屋。
Rotaryで沢山の素晴らしい人達と良い出会いが出来ました。そして、広告会社のDesignと私の千曲市の英語の内容、そして市のお金（！）、皆で力を合わせて良い結果を目指しています。明日の大会で全国の若旦那達と会えるので「井戸の中のかわず」にならないように勉強してきます。
でも、そろそろ、この沢山の会議にあちらこちらに引っ張らないで、良いのを選択して、役に立たないのを切り捨てなきゃ。改善、改善！
Today was Meetings, Meetings, Meetings and more Meetings. And tomorrow I have to attend a 2-day Meeting in Nagoya.
The first meeting was with our town's Onsen Company to see about increasing the amount of Onsen water for the 2nd outdoor bath I've started building. Then it was on to Nagano City to give a talk at the Nagano Rotary Club on what draws Westerners to Japan. After that was a meeting by the Prefecture on making ryokans more "Green". Finally I stopped at an ad agency to discuss Chikuma City's upcoming English pamphlet.
Meeting the folks at Rotary was a great experience. Working with the ad team was great -- hopefully with their design and my content and the city's money (!), we can put together a pretty fancy brochure. But one thing I learned today was I have to do a better job of picking and choosing which meetings to attend so I can be back running our inn more!
