今日の午後２：４０頃に東北中心で8.9mの地震がありました。戸倉上山田温泉は揺れたけどダメージはなかった。東北のみ何のためにお祈りしています。

旅館業では、一方で長野県旅館青年部の部会長から「週明けに長野県救援隊出動する」と言う積極的なメッセージが入り、もう一方でこちらですでにキャンセルの連絡が入ってきた。

床材がプレスボード？そして床下に断熱材がない？

今日は弱った床板をちゃんとした合板に取り換えて、ついでに断熱材を入れました。思ったより倍ぐらいな時間がかかっちゃった。大工さん達を尊敬してしまいます。

実は、こういう改善が嫌いです。お客さんの見えない所を直しても、喜ばない。なおかつ、元々の作りが手抜きだったから直さなきゃいけなかった。

どうせ汗をかけて何かを改善すれば、お客様が喜ばれる所に手をかけたいよね。まあ、人生って薔薇ばかりじゃないんだ。雑草もあるよね。

More improvements on our inn. This time it was replacing the boards underneath the tatami mats. The builder had used cheap pressboard which had weakened over time. Pressboard isn't meant for flooring! And there wasn't any insulation in the floor, either!

To be honest, I really hate making this kind of improvement. If I'm going to put some sweat equity into the inn, I'd rather it be for something that our guests will be able to see and appreciate -- not something hidden under the floor. And I'd rather it be an improvement -- not just fixing someone else's careless labor.

Oh well, as they say, life isn't all a bowl of cherries.

先に紹介しました１１６６バックパッカーズさんは面白いです。あんなにシンプルな施設なのに、１１６６さんの満足度が非常に高いです。hostelworld.comで93％で、長野地方で２位です。

もっと面白いのは、世界大手の宿泊口コミサイトtravelocity.comで、全国の旅館７，９０９軒の中で２位の渋湯田中温泉の島屋です。もっと綺麗な施設が沢山あるのに、なぜ２位？

その理由は、フレンドリーサービスです。コメントを読めば、必ず出てきます。

つまり、箱がいくら綺麗になっても、スタッフのハートが入ってなければどうにもならない。マニュアルだけじゃ限がある。

先日に島屋に顔を出して、湯本さんご夫婦をお話ししました。「友達が遊びに来る時の対応と同じくするのはフレンドリー（友達の様）なサービスだ」と。近くにものすごく綺麗な野天風呂がある。友達が遊びに来ればそういうところに自然に連れてあげたくなる。お客さんに同じくすれば、喜んでくれる。

それ！

単純でしょう？

The guesthouse I just previously wrote about, 1166 Backpackers, is interesting. Despite rather spartan facilities, 1166 has the 2nd highest customer rating in the Nagano area with 93% on hostelworld.com.

Even more surprising is Shimaya Ryokan in Shibu Yudananka Onsen. On tripadviser.com, of the 7,909 ryokans listed in all of Japan, Shimaya is ranked #2. The Yumoto's even admit their inn isn't one of the best facilities-wise. So why so popular?

The reason is their friendly service. Read the comments -- practically every one of them praises Yumoto-san's friendliness.

Last week, I paid a visit and spoke with the Yumoto's. They explained friendly service is just that -- providing the type of service you would to a friend. For example, there is an onsen in the hills above his inn that has a spectacular view from the bath. If a friend came, you would naturally want to take him or her there. Yumoto-san regularly takes his guests there which they really, really appreciate.

That's it.

Simple, isn't it?

千曲市に稲荷山という町があります。善光寺街道の宿場だったころからの土壁の蔵は残っている、風情のある街です。市の観光資料の中に必ず載っていますが、実際行ってみて、がっかりする方が多いそうです。なぜなら、崩れてきてボロボロな蔵が多いからです。

個人的に私はこのままの土蔵が十分魅力あると思っています。逆に、Ｄｉｓｎｅｙｌａｎｄの様に表面だけを綺麗にしたら面白くない。しかし、土蔵の持ち主に何かの支援をしないと、個人だけじゃ土蔵の修理は無理でしょう。

以前に稲荷山を守ろう位としている仲間と市長に陳情した事があります。行政の協力がないと、無理という事；今の内に手を付けないと、土蔵が消えるよと。

その時に、市長がの一言：
「今の内」と言われてもネ…　皆は必ずそう言うよ
と否定されました。

と言いながら、今日、稲荷山と通ったら、また一つな土蔵の壊しの工事が行われていました。

近藤市長の任期の間に、稲荷山の土蔵は何件がつぶされたでしょうか？その責任は？

Here in Chikuma City, we have a neighborhood called Inariyama. It started out as a way station on the old Zenkoji Road connecting now-Nagano City and Matsumoto. Many of the original earthen-walled storehoses still exist, and the city always includes the area on its sightseeing brochures. However, many people who go see it come away disappointed. That's because a lot of the storehouses are in a crumbling state of disrepair.

Personally, I like the townscape the way it is now, and prefer it to a Disney-fied version with an impeccably maintained surface. But I realize that efforts need to be made to refurbish the storehouses. For the private owners, however, such maintenance is prohibitively expensive. Help from the government is required.

Some buddies of mine and I went to petition the mayor for just such assistance. We told him that the city has to act now before the storehouses disappear, that it's now or never.

The mayor's response?
"They've been saying 'Now or never' from a way long time ago, and will be saying that far into the future, too."
In other words, he blew us off.

Well, mayor, I drove through Inariyama today, and guess what I saw? Another storehouse being demolished. Just how many of these 'kura' will have disappeared under your watch? Who's responsibility is that?

Expatの新年会？

オーストリア人の木細工師、米国人のコンサルタント、ハンガリー人の陶芸家、そしてこの青い目の旅館若旦那。

皆が戸倉上山田温泉の周辺に住んでいる外国人だ。七福と言うおやき屋さんで集まって、なんちゃった新年会をやりました。亀清に2週間ぐらい滞在しているオーストラリア人の研究家三人と、陶芸家のＡｇｎｅｓさんの旦那さん、版画家のＦｕｍｉｏさんも一緒になって、皆で冷たいビールを飲みながら、アツアツ焼きたてのおやきで盛り上がりました。

海外に住む経験のあるＦｕｍｉｏさんが言ってくれました：日本に住んでいる外国人は色々なストレスがある；日本人には理解が出来ない。偶にこういうお互いに理解できる人たちの集まりが必要。他の付き合いは沢山あるから頻繁に集まれないけど、偶にね。

ちなみに、Ｆｕｍｉｏさんの新作版画展「色彩の幻想」は上田市にあるギャラリー駒で2月23日（水）から28日（月）まで行う予定です。Ａｇｎｅｓさんの作品がそのギャラリーの常設展示品だそうです。詳しくはＨＰへ。

It was like an expat 'Shin-nen kai' (New Year party). It seems like every little 'association' around is having these Shin-nen kai's. As a ryokan owner, I'm grateful as many of them are held at ryokans like ours. But most of them seem to be just another excuse to drink. Especially as they are coming off the tail of all those 'Bo-nen kai' (Forget-the-Year parties) at the end of last year. If people want to get together for a beer, why don't they just get together for a beer and not have to use an excuse of 'New Year Party'?

End of tirade and back to the story at hand.

A woodworker from Austria, a ceramic artist from Hungary, a consultant from the States, and yours truly, the blue-eyed ryokan proprietor, hooked up for a cold beer (call it a Shin-nen kai if you must) over piping hot oyaki buns at Shichifuku. We all live an work in the vicinity of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, and have a common bond of moving here from overseas. We were joined by 3 Aussies that are staying at Kamesei for an extended time as they work on a research paper, as well as Fumio-san, the husband of ceramic artist Agnes-san.

Fumio-san, who has lived abroad himself, shared a wise tidbit of info: foreigners living in Japan have a lot of stress; stress that a Japanese person can't understand. It's important for them to get together with people who face similar stress and blow off steam every once in a while. It should be spontaneous, not a formal get-together, as everyone has enough other regular obligations in their lives.

By the way, Fumio-san's newest prints will be on display at Gallery Koma in Ueda City from Wednesday 23-Feb through Monday 28-Feb. Agnes's ceramic pieces are on permanent display there as well. Check out the gallery's website for details.

普段はお客様の書いて頂く口コミに返事する立場ですが、昨日に泊まった舞浜のホテルに今度私から口コミを書く立場でした。その文章と写真：

家族でＴＤＬで夜遅くまで遊んでから疲れたままでインしたら、受付の方が「千曲市からですか？私はその近くの○○市出身です！）と、アットホームな感覚でホッとしました。館内は所々に可愛いアクセントがあって、特に子供の目線で。部屋が明るくて良かったし、朝は部屋の窓から富士山が見えて、嬉しかったです。もし部屋にタバコの匂いがなければ5点満点でした。

お正月後、我々が疲れて、子供達の学校が始まる前に家族でどこかへ一泊旅行します。個人的に私はほかの温泉旅館に泊まりたがっているが、今年は新幹線に乗って、東京へ出かけて、ディスニーランドとシーに行きました。もちろん、楽しい事は楽しいけど、ＴＤＬなりのおもてなしを見て、いい刺激になりました。

今回、一番感心したのはディスニーのマップと持ち歩いているＩフォンの地図を見比べれば、お客さんに見せる必要ない部分はどれだけうまく隠しているか、良く分かりました。ディスニーのマップによると、ＡワールドとＢワールドは隣に見えるけど、直接で行けずに、Ｃワールドを通らなきゃいけない。何でだろうと思って、ＩフォンのＧＰＳの地図を見て、ＡとＢの間は荷物の配達口になっている。運送トラックが見えないように、うまい具合に壁が立ています。

とか、もっと簡単に言えば、消火器は当然にあちらこちらにあるはずけど、一個も見えない。でも、このマイニングアトラクションの宝箱をよく見ると、「消火器」が書いてある。箱の反対側に覗いてみたら、赤い消火器が確かに入っています。

何でも何でもお客さんの目線を考えて、見せたい物をしっかり見せて、見せる必要のない物をうまく隠す。ディスニーは本当に偉い！

この間、亀清旅館の渡り廊下の横にある洗濯機を隠すために竹の塀を作りました。客室の暖房機、コンクリートブロック塀、そしてもちろん消火器等など、お客さんに見せる必要ない部分は隠す方法をどんどん考えないと駄目ですね。

まあ、ヘビーな事を考えすぎないで、せっかく世界一楽しい所なので写真を提供します。

Every year, in our exhaustion following the New Years crunch and before the kids go back to school, we take a couple of days off to go on a mini vacation ourselves. I personally like to go stay at a different onsen ryokan, but this year our family decided to take the shinkansen bullet train in to Tokyo and go to Disneyland and Disney Sea. Of course, we had a lot of fun, but it was great to see what a good job of 'omotenashi' Disney does.

The thing that impressed me the most this time was walking around using the official Disney map, and comparing it with the GPS map on my I-Phone made me realize how well Disney hides things they don't want the guests to see. World A looked like it was adjacent to World B, but you had to go through World C to get there. Looking on the I-Phone map, I realized there was a major delivery route between A and B. So as to make sure guests didn't see the trucks going in and out, there was a clever wall to block the view.

Or, on an even simpler level, you know there have to be fire extinguishers throughout the park, but walking around, you never see even one. But in one mining-themed attraction, there was a treasure box which upon closer inspection was labeled 'fire extinguisher'. Peeking behind the box revealed it was open with a bright red extinguisher inside.

Again, Disney shows guests what is meant to be seen, and does a great job of putting things that don't need to be seen out of sight.

Here at Kamesei Ryokan this past year, I built a bamboo fence to conceal the washing machine next to our watari-roka passage. But there are the heaters in the rooms, all the concrete block fences, and, of course, the fire extinguishers and what not that should be concealed. This trip to Disney has inspired me to work harder at thinking about what guests see and what they don't need to see.

But enough heavy, philosophical meanderings. Disney is the funnest place on Earth for goodness sake, so here are some of our fun pictures.

二男のケネス君は8歳になりました。旅館のお仕事の合間にプッチ誕生日パーティーを開きました。その写真です。

Our second son, Kenny, turned 8 years old yesterday. Inspite of our busy schedule here at the inn, we managed to sneak in a small birthday party for him, with pictures here.

我が旅館青年部の年末研修会の一部として、松本中心街を見学しました。市の観光協会の田立さんがご親切に案内してくれました。松本の２つ目のお城、縄手通り、中町通り、水源地の井戸、秘密の外濠小路など、松本の「裏」見所を含まれたツアーでした。市の「町興し」の取り組みもお蔭で良く分かりました。

田立さん、とってもいい参考になりました。有難うございました！

Our group of junior innkeepers from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen stopped off at Matsumoto City as part of our year end excursion. Mr. Tadachi-san from the city's Tourism Agency escorted us around the center of the city, explaining the various civic projects, past and present, along the way. Matsumoto's 'other' castle, Nawate-Dori and Nakamachi-Dori, the city's original well, the secret Soto-bori Alley, and so much more.

Tadachi-san, thank you so much for your informative tour!

我々戸倉上山田温泉の青年部員の研修会・忘年会で扉温泉の明神館に泊まりに行ってきました。明神館は業界の中で憧れている宿で、若社長の齊藤さんがついでに講演してくれました。エコ、無農薬、体験、電気自動車、インバウンド、色々な面で進んでいらっしゃる。日本らしい旅館作りで、感心しました。

齊藤様、大変お世話になりました。

Of all the ryokans in Nagano, one in particular stands out as world-class: Myojinkan in Tobira Onsen on the outskirts of Matsumoto City. While their address technically reads 'Matsumoto City', the inn is definitely in the hinterlands.

It's at the end of a narrow mountain road and the location is so isolated, there isn't any cell phone reception. (Actually, that's become a sales point for the inn. So much so that when NTT built a transponder tower nearby, the owner installed a blocking mechanism so the lobby is cell phone-free.)

You have to build a pretty darn attractive ryokan to get people to come so far out to the boonies, and Saitoh-san, the 30-something year old owner has done just that. The other junior innkeepers and I from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen spent the night there as our end-of-the-year excursion, and were treated to Myojinkan's fabulous treatment as well as talk by Saitoh-san himself.
